About Surat District

Earlier Surat was popularly called as Suryapur means the city of the Sun . It is a districtof Gujarat and it is situated on the left side of the bank of Tapti River. The name of thedistrict is mentioned in the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. In the year 1512 and again in1530 there was Portuguese empire in Surat. The Portuguese were become the mastersof Surat Sea trade at end of the 16th century. But the arrival of the British in the districtstarted in 1608 when the English East India Company used Surat as their centre oftrade. In 1615, in the Battle of Swally, British conquered over Portuguese and made theSurat city as the presidency of the East India Company. Surat as a separate districtcame into existence in 1520. Narmadashankar Lalshankar Dave, popularly known asNarmad, was a famous Gujarati author, poet, scholar and public speaker. He was born on24th August, 1833 in Surat. In his honour the South Gujarat University was renamed asVeer Narmad South Gujarat University in 2004. Navalram Pandya and Ranjitram Mehta arethe two eminent authors and literary critic born in Surat.

Geographically, the district lies at 21°20' N latitude, 72°82' E longitude and 13 mAlt itude. The district occupies an area of 4,549 sq km and it is bounded byBharuch,Narmada on the north, Navsari district on the south, Tapi district on the eastand the Gulf of Cambay on the west. The chief river of the district is Tapti River. Due tothe Gulf of Cambay the climate of Surat is moderate. The actual rainfall in the districtwas 899.9 mm in the year of 2015-16.

Administrative wise, the district is divided into 10 tehsils namely Choryasi, Mangarol,Olapad, Palasana, Kamarej, Umarpada, Mahuva, Mandavi , Baradoli and Surat city . Thereare 2 Parliamentary constituencies and 16 Assembly Constituencies in the district.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 60,81,322 (persons) including34,02,224 (males) and 26,79,098 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 787 femalesfor every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate of the district is21.74% (persons) out of which 24.97 % (males) and 17.89 % (females). The majorreligions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 86.50% and 10.78% of the totalpopulation respectively .

Diamond processing, textiles and chemical and petrochemical industries are the backboneof the economy of Surat. The quality of silk produced by Gujarat is very fine so it isoften called as the Silk city of India. It has many cotton mills and it has also the biggestmanmade fibre centre. The city has many good industries likewise ONGC, GAIL, ABGShipyard, Narmada Cement, Ambuja Cement, Ultratech Cement, Reliance Petroleum,ESSAR group of Industries, etc which are also contributing in its economy.

Veer Narmad South Gujarat University is the one of the important universities of Surat.Most of the colleges of the district are affiliated to this university. Surat has one of the30 National Institute of Technology in India i.e. Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute ofTechnology. The district has many reputed IT, engineering and management institutes.Government Medical College and New Civil Hospital and Surat Municipal Institute ofMedical Education & Research are the two renowned medical colleges of the district. Asper 2011 census the literacy rate of the district is 85.53% (persons), 89.56% (males)and 80.37% (females).

Darshana Jardosh, an illustrious Indian politician and current member of the Lok Sabharepresenting the Surat constituency in Gujarat was born on 21st January, 1961 in Surat.She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party . Kanshiram Rana, a distinguished Indianpolitician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party was born on 7 th April, 1938 inSurat. In 1989, he was elected to the9th Lok Sabhain Gujarat. He was elected to the LokSabha from Surat constituency for many times-- in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and2004.

The district has various sets of tourist place which allures many travellers from differentparts of the world. Jagdish Chandra Bose Aquarium, the first multidisciplinary underwateraquarium of the country is situated at Pal area of Surat. Chintanmani Jain Templesituated in the Shahpor area has many ancient rare wooden carvings and paintings ofJain culture. Surat fort or the Old Fort was built by Britishers in the 1616, which is nowused for municipal offices. Earlier the Sardar Patel Museum was called the WinchesterMuseum. The museum was established in 1998 has many antique collection of arts andcrafts. Jawaharlal Nehru garden is the largest and one of the oldest gardens in the citywhich has a musical fountain also. Dumas Beach,located along the Arabian Sea in thecity is the most admired centre of attraction. Gavier Lake in the city attracts numerousmigratory birds is the best place for nature’s lovers.
