Leaders Inspire Belief

Our 2011-2012 international theme is comprised oftwo simple, but very powerful words, I BELIEVE.

Our founder, Melvin Jones believed that one personcould make a difference. He believed that by creatingan organization focused on serving those in need, hecould improve the lives of many. He had the courageto carry through on his idea, he had the commitment toput forth the necessary effort, and he took action toturn his dream into a reality.

President Tam shares in Melvin Jones’ belief that witheach Lions club member, the impact of our servicebroadens and the world is improved, person byperson, community by community. He furtherrecognizes that one of the most important things aleader can bring to others in an organization is thebelief that they can make a difference. As leaders, wemust inspire belief in others.

Consider these five characteristics that you, as a Lionsleader, can use to help foster that belief among ourmembers:

1. Authenticity – As a leader, you are the message;who you are must be conveyed authentically.2. Transparency – Even if things are not perfect, share as appropriate; focus on what is real and onwhat is possible.

3. Vision & creativity – Appreciate the value of visionand creativity in inspiring others to dream, to take risksand to move to action; make sure your vision isattainable and grounded in reality.

4. Willingness to make tough decisions – Beforeothers are willing to believe, they must see that theirleaders are willing to break new ground. Pay attentionnot only to the urgent, but to the important, sacrificesome good ideas for fewer better ones, and alignresources to maintain a focused purpose.

5. Strategic communication – Leaders who inspireinvest in communications. Effective leaders provideconstant, clear and consistent communicationincluding information updates, candid commentary oncritical issues, a focus on areas in need of attentionand an open invitation for two-way communication.

Many leaders do not give appropriate attention tothese five critical characteristics, but leaders whoinspire belief, do. Do you inspire belief?

The Club Excellence Process

The CLUB EXCELLENCE PROCESS (CEP) is aboutto roll out right across Australia, with facilitators in theprocess of receiving training so that they may helpintroduce the concept to clubs within our District.

WHAT IS CEP. Club Excellence Process is a workshopprogram dedicated to club improvement. A club thatdecides to participate in the CEP will be guided by afacilitator through four steps which will examine theircommunity’s needs, analyse their membershipexperience, use resources and development actionplans.

For some time now we have been hearing variouscomments across our District like:-

My club does not do much in the communityanymore

Our meetings are staid and boring – notattractive to new members

Most of our activities are done by the samefew members – how do I get involved

We don’t seem to be able to attract newmembers, and those who do join don’t stayvery long

If any one of these or similar statements applies toyour club, then you should consider introducing theProcess to your club.

Miss Popularity meetsPersonality QuestEntrant

Rachelle McNamaraIn November 2011 I was fortunate enough to travel toBrisbane for the Lions Medical Research PersonalityQuest Hospital Visit and Workshop. As the winner ofthe Lions 201Q2 Miss Popularity Quest I am the Q2entrant in the Lions Medical Research PersonalityQuest (LMRPQ). This Quest is the main fundraiser forthe Lions Medical Research Foundation (LMRF) withthe aim of entrants raising funds in their communitiesto fund lifesaving medical research and increaseawareness of the achievements of the Quest andFoundation. LMRF funds 4 medical researchers peryear, with each researcher funded for a 3 year term.Over $12 million have been raised in the 40 yearhistory of the quest which has funded many lifesavingmedical treatments. These include the development ofthe world renowned Gardasil vaccination againstCervical Cancer, kidney transplantation, oral insulin fordiabetes and King Brown snake anti-coagulant toname a few.

Quest entrants were flown to Brisbane in November tocomplete a tour of the Royal Brisbane and Women’sHospital where we met current LMRF researchers andwere taken on a tour of the Perinatal Intensive CareWard. This gave me the opportunity to speakpersonally to researcher Dr Tracey Bjorkman abouther research into neonatal hypoxic brain injury, whichis a special interest of mine, being a medical studenthoping to practice obstetrics upon graduation. Wewere also given a presentation from 2011 PersonalityWinner Georgina McKenzie who spoke about heramazing quest experience and year representing theLions Medical Research Foundation. I thoroughlyenjoyed the Hospital Visit and was very appreciative tohave the chance to meet the twenty other Questentrants and Quest Chairwoman Lesley Lyons. Iwould like to thank Dianne Pyers and the Lions 201Q2Miss Popularity Quest for this wonderful opportunityand for your organisation of the trip.

I returned from my hospital visit very motivated tocontinue my year of fundraising for the Lions MedicalResearch Foundation. The Grand Final for the LionsMedical Research Personality Quest is being held inBrisbane on the 16

CUT OFF DATES:

Cut off for Club Hospitality on Friday 4th May is 1stMarch 2012.

Also a reminder that the Registrations close off is 20thApril 2012.

As a crowded airliner is about to take off, the peace isshattered by a 5-year-old boy who picks that momentto throw a wild temper tantrum. No matter what hisfrustrated, embarrassed mother does to try to calmhim down, the boy continues to scream furiously andkick the seats around him.

Suddenly, from the rear of the plane, an elderly man inthe uniform of an Air Force General is seen slowlywalking forward up the aisle. Stopping the flusteredmother with an upraised hand, the white-haired,courtly, soft-spoken General leans down and, motioning toward his chest, whispers something intothe boy's ear.

Instantly, the boy calms down, gently takes hismother's hand, and quietly fastens his seat belt. All theother passengers burst into spontaneous applause.

As the General slowly makes his way back to his seat, one of the cabin attendants touches his sleeve."Excuse me, General," she asks quietly, "but could Iask you what magic words you used on that little boy?"

The old man smiles serenely and gently confides, "Ishowed him my pilot's wings, service stars, and battleribbons, and explained that they entitle me to throwone passenger out the plane door on any flight Ichoose."

For the first time in many years, an old man travelledfrom his rural town to the city to attend a movie. Afterbuying his ticket, he stopped at the concession standto purchase some popcorn.

Handing the attendant $1.50, he couldn't help butcomment, "The last time I came to the movies, popcorn was only 15 cents.""Well, sir," the attendantreplied with a grin, "You're really going to enjoyyourself. We have sound now.."

The Tomato Company

An unemployed man is desperate to support his familyof a wife and three kids. He applies for a janitor's jobat a large firm and easily passes an aptitude test. Thehuman resources manager tells him, "You will be hiredat minimum wage of $5.35 an hour. Let me have youre-mail address so that we can get you in the loop. Oursystem will automatically e-mail you all the forms andadvise you when to start and where to report on yourfirst day." Taken back, the man protests that he ispoor and has neither a computer nor an e-mailaddress.

To this the manager replies, "You must understandthat to a company like ours that means that youvirtually do not exist. Without an e-mail address youcan hardly expect to be employed by a high-tech firm.Good day." Stunned, the man leaves.

Not knowing where to turn and having $10 in hiswallet, he walks past a farmers' market and sees astand selling 25 lb. crates of beautiful red tomatoes. He buys a crate, carries it to a busy corner anddisplays the tomatoes. In less than 2 hours he sells allthe tomatoes and makes 100% profit. Repeating theprocess several times more that day, he ends up withalmost $100 and arrives home that night with severalbags of groceries for his family .

During the night he decides to repeat the tomatobusiness the next day. By the end of the week he isgetting up early every day and working into the night. He multiplies his profits quickly. Early in the secondweek he acquires a cart to transport several boxes oftomatoes at a time, but before a month is up he sellsthe cart to buy a broken-down pickup truck.

At the end of a year he owns three old trucks. His twosons have left their neighbourhood gangs to help himwith the tomato business, his wife is buying thetomatoes, and his daughter is taking night courses atthe community college so she can keep books for him.

By the end of the second year he has a dozen verynice used trucks and employs fifteen previouslyunemployed people, all selling tomatoes. He continuesto work hard.

Time passes and at the end of the fifth year he owns afleet of nice trucks and a warehouse that his wifesupervises, plus two tomato farms that the boysmanage. The tomato company's payroll has puthundreds of homeless and jobless people to work. Hisdaughter reports that the business grossed over onemillion dollars. Planning for the future, he decides tobuy some life insurance.

Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks aninsurance plan to fit his new circumstances. Then theadviser asks him for his e-mail address in order tosend the final documents electronically. When the manreplies that he doesn't have time to mess with acomputer and has no e-mail address, the insuranceman is stunned, "What, you don't have e-mail? Nocomputer? No Internet? Just think where you wouldbe today if you'd had all of that five years ago!" "Ha!"snorts the man. "If I'd had e-mail five years ago Iwould be sweeping floors at Microsoft and making$5.35 an hour."

Which brings us to the moral of the story: Since yougot this story by e-mail, you're probably closer tobeing a janitor than a millionaire.

Paddy went into a shop to buy a pair of gumboots.“What size do you want?” asked the man behind thecounter. “Dunno,” Paddy replied. The shopkeeper peered over the counter, gazed atPaddy’s feet for a moment, then chucked a pair ofgumboots across.“Try them,” he said, “they should be about right.”Paddy tugged the gumboots on, then began shufflingaround the shop, taking tiny little steps.“Do they fit OK? asked the shopkeeper.“Yes they’re fine,” said Paddy, “but have you got a pairwith a longer bit of string between them?”

It seems the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)has a unique device for testing the strength ofwindshields on airplanes. The device is a gun thatlaunches a dead chicken at a plane's windshield atapproximately the speed the plane flies.

The theory is that if the windshield doesn't crack fromthe carcass impact, it'll survive a real collision with abird during flight. It seems the British were veryinterested in this and wanted to test a windshield on abrand new, speedy locomotive they're developing.

They borrowed the FAA's chicken launcher, loaded thechicken and fired. The ballistic chicken shattered thewindshield, went through the engineer's chair, brokean instrument panel and embedded itself in the backwall of the engine cab. The British were stunned andasked the FAA to recheck the test to see if everythingwas done correctly.

The FAA reviewed the test thoroughly and had onerecommendation: "Use a thawed chicken."
