Background
CUTS with financial assistance from Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC),
Sweden is implementing a two-year project. The objective of the project is to promote
organic consumption in the State of Rajasthan (India) covering six major agriculture potential
districts by awareness generation, sensitisation, capacity-building and advocacy activities.
Increased awareness is expected to result in increased consumer demand, which will further
push demand for availability and affordability of organic products contributing towards
decreasing health hazards of consumers.
The project is expected to result in better informed consumers and farmers about organic
consumption and farming and advocating for better policies and enforcement thereof by
sensitised policy makers in the State. This will boost organic farming and consumption in the
State and in the long run will provide sustainable environment and lifestyle.
Under the project, six „District Level Orientation Programmes‟ and „Exposure Visits‟ for
farmer groups were organised. The objective was to motivate farmers to reduce chemical uses
in farming by way of several sessions/lectures on organic farming and related issues through
subject experts and to showcase some of the successful live demonstration of organic farming
for the purpose of practical orientation in the nearby farms.
In all six districts, efforts were made to ensure participation of farmers, especially women
farmers representing all blocks of the district. The objective of the orientation was to build
capacity of farmers and inspire them to take up organic farming through experience gained
from various subject experts and live demos of organic culture. Through the trained farmers,
it was further envisaged that they will work as catalyst at local level in order to impart their
knowledge gained from orientation and exposure.
Summary of Activities
The six “District Level Orientation Programmes” and “Exposure Visits” were conducted
during April 29-June 27, 2014. Representation of farmers from each block of the district was
ensured. More than 262 male farmers and 120 female farmers participated in six events,
though only few of them were found to be purely involved in organic agriculture prior to
orientation.
The first day of all events witnessed the presence of resource persons comprising of scientists
from Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) at all the districts, officials from National Bank for
Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Agriculture Department and Horticulture
Department of State Government and Rajasthan State Seeds Corporation and representatives
from NGOs working on similar issues in some districts played a pivotal role in disseminating
key and important issues on the subject. Participation of these resource persons cleared the
doubts and hesitation of farmers regarding organic farming and the available schemes of the
government in support to organic farming.
These events helped bringing farmers and institutions on a common platform for better
coordination in future, which will ultimately help in reaping good results. Healthy debate and
discussion over myths about organic culture and financial benefits took place. The events also
helped participants to know some of the traditional ways of organic farming, such as
formation of vermi wash and compost, herbal pesticides/insecticides management, treatment
of seeds and soil management etc.
3
The second day was dedicated to exposure visits in nearby farms, which were managed by
local agriculture farmers working exclusively on the pattern of organic farming. The
participants of first day were taken in vehicles to visit nearby farm. The farm owners at all the
places showcased live demonstration of various traditional systems of organic farming
through their experience and tried to motivate participants for adopting organic farming.
Participants visited farm sites and the saw the convergence, which motivated them to adopt
organic farming and consumption. Queries from the workshop were clarified in practical.
District level Farmers Orientation Workshop and Exposure Visits were organised by CUTS,
in partnership with district project partners. Around 50 participants from each district
representing every sub-district (block) participated in the activity. Target beneficiary of
activities were only farmers from selected panchayats from six project districts. Special
efforts were made to ensure female participation but due to local circumstances, only 32
percent female participation was secured.

Clubbing Orientation Workshops with Exposure Visits
Though both are different activities under the project but these were conducted back to back
in each district. The main reason was to ensure that the same group of participants who
attended one-day orientation on organic farming should also get the practical exposure for
better understanding, so that they are in position to actually engage in organic farming.
4
The other reason was to save the organising and other costs to maximise the expenditure
outcomes.
Key Features of Events
Kota, April 29-30, 2014
The first Farmer‟s Orientation was organised at the conference hall of KVK, Kota, where 89
farmers participated.
After welcome speech, CUTS representatives informed the audience and resource persons
about the objectives of project and the concerned activity. In introductory remark, it was
informed that bumper production of food grains have resulted into bumper health problems
because of high volume of chemical intake by human beings as well as animals.
Disappearance of vultures is the live experience of chemical hazards causing natural
imbalance. The same is visible at the farm house and in residential areas.
S S Tomar, Director KVK in
his inaugural address spoke on
soil treatment and said that it
should be done on priority
because intense use of
chemicals in farming have
degraded the soil strength. Use
of chemicals has made farmers
dependent on multinational
companies for seeds, fertilisers,
pesticides, marketing etc. He
mentioned that the entire
scenario has changed because
farmers have been
concentrated only on high financial return and adopted only non-organic farming methods for
the sake. He mentioned that KVK is having the facility of soil testing with nominal cost, so
farmers on regular interval can get the soil tested. He also focussed on issues, such as
agriculture marketing and storage aspects.
Amarjeet Singh, Project Coordinator
mentioned the potential of organic
farming in increasing employment. He
mentioned that the organic farming
consists of animal husbandry, soil and
seed treatment, preparation of manure
and bio-nutrients, storage and
processing etc., which requires high
volume of manpower. An average of
seven to ten full time persons is
required for organic farming in order
to produce adequate financial gains.
He also said that organic farming in
Rajasthan is a medium of
employment.
5
Dharmendra Chaturvedi, Project Officer defined various methods of traditional organic
farming. Mahendra Singh, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Kota briefed participants on soil
management and also apprised them with some popular methods of organic farming.
Environmentalist L K Dhadich spoke on the importance of water and its conservation in
organic farming. He said that organic farming helps to safeguard environment on long run
and thus is an important part of sustainable development. Horticulture Scientist Mukesh
Kumar Garg defined the historical purview of organic culture.
On the second day, all the participants were taken to a nearby farm of farmer Narendra Malav
situated in village Dangawad near Char Choma. At the farm house, farmers witnessed the
crop of mango, papaya etc. by way of organic farming and also saw vermi compost and few
traditional systems of organic culture.
Chittorgarh, May 06-07, 2014

Bank Manager of Bank of Baroda, Ashok Sharma as resource persons.
O P Pareekh in his inaugural
address thanked CUTS for
mobilising farmers on this
important issue. He said that non-
organic farming has been
adversely affecting human health,
environment, bio-diversity and the
land strength. Further, he is also
disappointed with the way,
farmers have been using
chemicals in their fields without
knowing its after effects. Even at
many places, these farmers are
using the waste water discharged by nearby industries and towns for irrigation purposes,
though it provides good yield but also results into severe health problems in the long run.
Pareekh mentioned facilities and infrastructure available with KVK at Chittorgarh for
empowering farmers.
Pankaj Yadav briefed participants on the importance of organic farming and schemes of
NABARD for farmers. He appealed to farmers to accept the organic farming for better gain
and more profit and healthy environment. Yadav shed light on Farmer‟s Club scheme, Self
Help Group and Infrastructure Development support being assisted by NABARD for farmers.
In one of the query, he mentioned that time to time, NABARD provides credit to farmers for
purchasing tools, equipments, seeds and development of nursery. All facilities can be availed
by way of simple paper formalities.
Ashok Sharma mentioned that his bank is providing financial assistance for the development
of irrigation facilities, covering sinking of wells/bore wells, lifting of water by installation of
6
pump sets, transporting of water through field channels, water saving system like drip
irrigation/sprinkler irrigation, energising of pump sets through non-conventional energy
resources like wind mill, solar energy and installation of generation sets etc. Sharma also
spoke about credit facilities available for raising various crops from the point of tillage till
harvesting for land owners or permanent tenants or lease holders or share croppers.
Shankar Lal Jat emphasised on the need of animal husbandry for promotion of organic
farming. He mentioned that traditionally Indian family‟s prosperity was used to be judged by
number of cows and other domestic animals, which they possess, but today the scenario has
been changed. He narrated how the richness is linked with animal husbandry.
Iqbal Hussain took the session on need and importance of organic farming and pest
management by local available resources and traditional methods. He also spoke about the
disadvantages of chemical farming. Hussain also described the method of „biological
insecticide‟ and stated that it is not harmful and can be used in crops.
