hit-and-run accident this past
weekend.
Nikki Monteiro (18) was return-
ing home from the after-party of
Strand High Schools matric dance,
intheearlyhoursofSaturdaymorn-
ing, when the accident occurred.
Her mother, Dawn van der
Merwe, explains that Nikki and her
sister had been dropped off in a
parkinglot inGeorgeStreet,Strand,
opposite the complex in which the
family lives.
The two girls and some friends
were about to cross the road when
the car hit Nikki.
A silver Volkswagen Polo came
speeding from the direction of the
fire station. The driver lost control
and crashed into Nikki.
He then just sped off and turned
in the direction of Gordons Bay,
explains Dawn.
Nikkis sister phoned Dawn to in-
formherof the incident, and instead
of waiting for an ambulance, they
rushed Nikki to hospital
themselves.
ShortlyafterNikkiarrivedatHel-
derberg Hospital, she was trans-
ferred to Tygerberg Hospital.
Doctors informed them that she
would have to undergo a series of
operations to save her right leg,
whichhadbeenbadly injured in the
collision.
Dawn explains that she is Nikkis
foster mother, and that Nikki, who
is a student at Boland College, has
been living with the family for just
over a year.
She is a sporty and very active
girl, playing hockey for Boland and
soccer for Maties.
Her dream is to one day play for
Banyana Banyana, but now were
unsure of howshewill recover from
this.
Were not even sure if shell be
able to participate in sports again,
says a worried Dawn.

bone, secure veins and arteries, and
remove a drain that had been
inserted.
Dawn explains that Nikki is
scheduled togo fora thirdoperation
today (Thursday), during which
doctors will insert pins and plates
to hold the bone together and to en-
sure that her legs are the same
length.
Sean Falconer, head coach of the
womens Maties soccer team, was
shocked when he received an SMS
from Nikki about the accident.
Shes a very talented young
player who played exceptionally
well in her recent matches.
She also recently tookpart in the
under-19 provincial trials. Its a sad
loss, but we hope she will be back
soon.
With the future of Nikkis sport-
ing career still unknown, the family
is deeply concerned about the
drivers criminal behaviour.
What kind of a person knocks
someone over and then just drives
on? asks Dawn.
I just finditdisgustingthatsome-
thing like this can happen.
Dawnsays the familyhasbrought
the incident under the polices
attention.
However, the authorities have in-
formedthe family that theycanonly
start investigatingonceNikki is out
of hospital and able to give a state-
ment concerning the events.

the Brand Street house to catch fire. Within
minutes flames had engulfed the home.
Chatburn, who was renting the house, lost
all her possessions. The owners, John Si-

of the furniture, bedding and clothing they
had been storing in a loft upstairs.
Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of

of the fire is an electrical fault.

had owned was lost in the fire.
She says she was collecting boxes from out-

her neighbour was burning garden refuse.
Chatburn says she soon realised that the
smokewas coming from the roof of the house.
I ran back into the house when I realised
that my five-year-old daughter, Chlo, was
asleep in the bedroom, and switched off all the

GORDONSBAY: FIRE
Fireputs supermarketoutofaction
DELIAH BRINKHUIS
A
fire at the Pick n Pay in Gor-
dons Bay last Wednesday
evening has resulted in the tem-
porary closure of the store.
On Thursday clients were greeted with
notices at the entrance of the centre in-
forming them of the supermarkets
closure.
In disbelief, some made their way to-
wards the entrance of the shop merely to
be greeted with the same message on
locked doors.
According to Pick n Pay spokesperson
TamraVeley, the fire started in the refrig-
eration area.
Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson
Theo Layne says the fire started at about
22:30. Layne says when firefighters ar-
rived at the scene they found that books
inside the store were on fire.
He says therewasno structural damage
to the building, adding that the cause of
the fire is unknown at this stage.
Veley says the supermarketwill reopen
within thenext twoto threeweeks,during
which staff will assist with the cleanup
process.
Most damage, she says, was in the per-
ishables area.
Veley extends an apology on behalf of
the supermarket group and asks that the
Gordons Bay supermarkets customers
shopat thechainsbranchesatBroadway,
Somerset Mall or Waterstone.
No other businesses in the centre have
been affected by the fire; all remain open
for trading as usual. Notices of the temporary closure of Pick n Pay Gordons Bay are displayed at the entrance to the centre.

Strand police comment on crime
The commander of Strand Police
Station says addiction is likely
behind the rise inhousebreaking
in the area.
The latest crime statistics,
which cover the period from
April 2011 toMarch 2012, showan
increase in the number of resi-
dential burglaries from 709 to
743 compared previous period.
Lieutenant colonel Shaun van
Wyk says this could be ascribed
to drugabuse. People break in to
satisfy their drug use, and the
marketforstolenpropertyisbig.
A decrease in vehicle theft (53
to 46) was noted. Van Wyk says
awareness campaigns focusing
on peoples safety and property
arepayingoff. Thepolice are also
reaping the rewards of higher
visibility at hot spots for car
theft, such as the Dorpsmeent.
Drug-related crimes deemed
heavily dependent on police ac-
tion for detection rose from 526
to 640, and Van Wyk notes that
there has been a significant in-
crease in drug-related arrests.

UP IN SMOKE: Clouds of smoke engulfed
Irene Avenue shortly after this truck broke
down on Tuesday at 17:20. There was an
attempt to repair it, but the occupants later
left. Moments later it disappeared in a
cloud of smoke, while the engine revved at
its peak until it popped, says a Somerset

traffic and asked their control room to alert

HELDERBERG: SPRINGDOWNPOURS
Heavyweather floods roads
NIKITA SYLVESTER
D
ams, rivers and pools
have sprung up across
the Helderberg after
lastweeks torrent of rain and
hail.
Few residents were prepared
for the deluge that struck on
Thursday 27 September, despite
the fact that the South African
Weather Service had warned
such weather is not unheard of
at this time of year.
During the change of seasons
September to November and
March to May.
It is not unusual for the Hel-
derberg to experience thunder
activity and to record substan-
tial rainfall, says Gail Linnow,
client liaison officer for the
South AfricaWeather Service in
the Western Cape.
She furtherexplains theactual
amount of rain that fell and how
it is measured in millimetres.
If you have a swimming pool
that is 1 000 mm(onemetre) deep
and 100 mm of rain is recorded,
the pool will rise up by 100 mm
to 1 100 mm (1,1 metres).
Linnow says that if more than
5 mm of rainfall is recorded in a
24-hour period, it is considered
to be a heavy rain.
From 08:00 Thursday 27 Octo-
ber to 08:00 Friday 28 October:
) Somerset West saw 69,5 mm
of rain with light hail;
) 35,8 mm and 38,8 mm were
recorded in two cloudbursts at
Steenbras Dam; and
) up to 60 mmwas recorded in
a three-hour period on some of
thewine farms in theHelderberg
region.
According to the City of Cape
Towns disaster risk manage-
ment centre, the areas worst af-
fected were roads in Somerset
West, particularly with Main
Road being flooded, causing
spillage into various shop door-
ways alongside.
Masibulele Gudlindlu, super-
visor at KFC Somerset West in
Main Road, says although
employees were forced to sweep
water out of the store continu-
ously, thankfully nothing was
damaged.
The Citys disaster risk teams
also responded to other proper-
ties in Somerset West that had
been flooded, namely in River-
side Park, Radcliff Road, Moun-
tain Road, Lourensford and
Drama Crescent.
The disaster response teams
assisted by pumping out water
from the various properties.
ResidentsinFirgrove,SirLow-
rys Pass, Nomzamo, Lwandle
and Strand were also assisted; a
total of around 250 households
had been waterlogged.
A Somerset West
resident saw the
flooding as a

flooded streets.

Leopard saved fromsnare
NIKITA SYLVESTER
T
he Helderberg appears to have be-
come quite a popular tourist destina-
tion for the Western Capes leopard
population.
On Monday 17 September another Cape
leopardwasseenintheareathis time caught
in a snare onLourensfordwine estate in Som-
erset West.
As previously reported, the Cape leopard
made an appearance a few weeks prior. One
of the two that had been spotted was hit by
a vehicle on Clarence Drive.
The trappedmale leopard was found by the
estatesmangers,who immediately contacted
the relevant authorities.
Biodiversity management staff from the
City of Cape Towns environmental resource
management department arrived at the scene
shortly after. It is believed that the snare had
been placed by poachers, seemingly in an at-
tempt to catch small antelope.
Cape Leopard Trust and Boland Leopard
Project coordinators Jeannie Hayward and
Anita Meyer were also called in to assist the
trapped animal.
TheCitysbiodiversitymanager for theHel-
derberg, Owen Wittridge, darted the leopard
so that his rescuers could release him from
the snare and tend to his injuries.
Therewas a deep laceration around the ani-
mals midsection, which needed to be cleaned
and stitched. The wound had been caused by
thesnaretighteningashestruggledtoget free.
Even though a few of us have seen a Cape
leopard, it is very exciting to learn that they
still occur in the mountains around Cape
Town, says Belinda Walker, the Citys may-
oral committee member for economic, envi-
ronmental and spatial planning.
Oncetheleopardwastreated,atrackingcol-
lar was fitted so that his recovery could be
monitored. The data gathered from the collar
will contribute to Haywards PhD work.
The focus of herwork is to research, among
others, the Cape leopards abundance and
feeding habits, as well as the effects that hu-
manhabitationand fire tonamea fewhave
on them. According to the City, the informa-
tion will allow researchers to aid nature re-
serve managers keep delicate ecosystems
balanced.
Walker says Cape Town is extremely privi-
legedtostillhaveapopulationof free-roaming
Cape leopards residing in its mountains.
These areas form only a very small part
of the leopards home range, and it is impor-
tant that City biodiversity managers main-
tainsuchresearchrelationships toensure the
preservation of the species in our area.

GORDONSBAY: SEA RESCUE
NSRIgetnight visionboost
T
he futures looking bright for
the NSRI station in Gordons
Bay, thanks to the donation of
a pair of night-vision binoculars.
Thegiftwaspresented toNigelPep-

last month by Paul Tanner, commo-
dore of Gordons Bay Yacht Club.
This much-needed piece of equip-
mentwaslargelyaresultof theefforts
of Abrie Erasmus, owner of the yacht
Sandpiper and a club member.
Abrie, a longtime NSRI supporter,
knew themajority of sea rescues take
place at night, and so started raising
funds for the binoculars. They are in-
valuable for night rescues because
they are gyro-stabilised,meaning the
image in the lens doesnt jump too
much when looking out from a mov-
ing vessel, making it easier to keep
a person or small boat in sight.
When scanning an area, the binoc-
ulars infrared sensors aid rescue by
sensing the heat emanating from a
person floating in the cold sea; the
personappears as a red speckagainst
the comparatively black ocean.
In the meantime, another sailor
from the yacht clubhad reason to call
upon the NSRI for assistance after
getting into difficulty in a stormnear
the Steenbrass River mouth.
He was so grateful to the NSRI for
getting him back to port safely that
he offered a donation to the station.

Wanneer die mense (slagoffers)

die polisie altyd baie vinnig om te

hulle skakel.
So het daar nou weer iemand
Donderdag by my dogter se huis

Paramedici, dokters en verpleeg-

die oggendure van Donderdag 13
September 2012, het ons vrou, ma
en ouma baie ernstig siek geword
en moes daar dringend van die
dienste van die Helderberg-hospi-

Binne enkele minute nadat die
ambulans ontbied is (slegs een op-
roep is gemaak) het die paramedi-
ci opgedaag. Met die aankoms by
die hospitaal is dadelik na haar
omgesien en was die hulp en be-
handeling deur die dokters en ver-
pleegpersoneel van uitsonderlike
gehalte.
Onsself as haar familielede, is
met soveel deernis, begrip, goed-
heid, hulp, liefde en onskatbare
ondersteuning bygestaan.

Praiseandprayers forHelderbergHospital
A word of sincere thanks to the
porter,Mr Isaacs, and toDrCillier
at the Helderberg Hospital for
their assistance.
On Friday 3 August my 13-year-
old son was knocked over by a ve-
hicle in a residential area in
Strand and taken to the Helder-
berg Hospital trauma unit.
We were quite nervous because
of everyones negative reports
about the hospital.We though, un-
derthecircumstances,hadapleas-
ant experience.
A young Dr Cillier, who had a
huge workload and had to work at
a fast pace, attended to our son
with friendliness.
Our prayer is that youwill pros-
per and have a bright future as a
medical practitioner.
The porter, Mr Isaacs, was so
friendly, compassionate and ex-
tremely helpful.
On 6 August my son needed to
be back at the hospital to check if
he needed a knee operation.
There were no beds or wheel-
chairsavailableinthetraumaunit
at the time, butMr Isaacswent the
extramile by finding awheelchair
toassistmyson.Healsoattempted
to make my son as comfortable as
possible and checked up on him
regularly.
In a country where service ex-
cellence is unfortunately not a
common occurrence any longer,
we are thankful and encouraged
by Dr Cillier, Mr Isaacs and the
Helderberg Hospital, which they
represent.
Once again our sincere thanks,
and be assured of our continued
prayer support for Helderberg
Hospital and its staff.

Helpyour communityby joininganeighbourhoodwatch
This is an appeal to persons living
inSomersetWest,specificallyinthe
areas of CBD, Roundhay, Golden
Hill, Golden Acre, Land-en-Zeez-
icht and Bridgewater, to join their
local neighbourhood watch.
One to two hours of your time
per week are all that is needed.
The neighbourhood watch
(NHW) is a well-organised volun-
tary group serving as the eyes
and ears of the community. The
NHW works closely with the
SAPS, Helderberg Crime Watch
and the security companies in
safeguarding the community
against criminal activities in our
neighbourhood.
The aim of the Somerset West
Neighbourhood Watch is to serve
as a watchdog for the community
and the local police services,
therebyassisting local police serv-
ices to safeguard the community
against criminal activities and to
strive for a safe and secure envi-
ronment for all.
Volunteer NHW members pa-
trol their local area in their cars
and report anything suspicious
via two-way radios provided to a
central control. Patrols last about
two hours and run 24 hours a day,
7 days a week. The presence of
these vehicles patrolling and dis-
playing the NHWdecals alone dis-
courages criminals.
Patrolling is easy and requires
no previous experience. A coordi-
nator can be available for a train-
ing run before your first patrol.
We already have an established
neighbourhood watch in these
areas with a very effective two-
wayradionetwork,butwerequire
more volunteers to lighten the
workload on the people already in-
volved. The greater our numbers,
the more effective we are.

you can assist, please contact me

Livingamong the
Cape leopards
Weareextremelyprivileged tobe
living within an area where free-
roaming Cape leopards are occa-
sionally spotted in remote moun-
tain areas.
It is just sad to hear that, because
of human encroachment on their
territory, one was caught in a snare
on a wine estate in Somerset West.
The good news, however, is that
there are many programmes set up
all over theCape tomonitor andpro-
tect these magnificent animals.
The leopard caught in a snare,
which was on the Lourensford wine
estate, survived because of swift in-
tervention by the estate managers.
The relevant authorities in the
City of Cape Town and other people
workingwith leopardswere quickly
contacted, and the leopard was
darted and its wounds treated.
Before being released a tracking
collar was fitted to it to monitor the
leopards movements.
TheaverageCape leopard is about
half the size of the leopards found in
the rest of Africa.
To monitor them, researchers
have set up infrared cameras in
areaswhere they have been spotted,
and have also collared several of
them to gain information on their
movements.Thisgives theresearch-
ers a good idea of their territories,
aswell as other things, such as their
prey.
Cape leopards tend to avoid ba-
boons, which can be as big as the
cats, and prey species include
duiker, hares and klipspringer.

COLUMN: FINANCES
Its all about trust
I
think one of the biggest ob-
stacles to private investment
in this country is trust.
Trust begins with advice and
lets be honest: the advice industry
has seriously dropped the ball in
this department.
The reputation damage done by
the insurance smouse masquer-
ading as financial advisors will
take years to repair.
Butat least this iswithin thecon-
trol of the investor. As an investor
youget to checkanadvisors quali-
fications, experience and refer-
ences before deciding if this is
someone you intend to trust.
When it comes to investing in a
company or share, the trust issue
gets far more complicated. As an
investor in a company you become
part owner of a business with fel-
low shareholders.
Anyone in private business will
tell you the most important aspect
of business is choosing your part-
ners correctly.
When it comes to investing in a
listed company, you do not have
the luxury of choosing your part-
ners. You purchase a share in a
company through the open stock
market.Youhavenoideawhoyour
fellow shareholders are, and thus
no trust.This iswhere theproblem
manifests.
You buy shares in a company
with the intentionof sharing in the
income and growth of the business
for the next 20 years. But youwake
upthenextdaytofindoutthatyour
fellow shareholders have decided
to sell their shares at 20% less than
what you just paid, all because
some nutcracker decided to fly an
aeroplane into a building in New
York. It is easy to understand why
something like this can literally
put you off investing for life.
The next trust hurdle is the rela-
tionship between company direc-
tors and their shareholders, and
this isanareawithareally terrible
track record.
There are just far too many ex-
amples of directors misleading
shareholdersandabusing theirpo-
sitions to feather their own nests.
Alistedcompanyisownedbythe
shareholders and should be man-
aged in their best interests and not
the interests of management and
staff. As a minority shareholder
youhavevery little say in thedaily
running of the business other than
your annual vote, which is why
manycompanydirectors becomea
law unto themselves.
All the odds appear to be stacked
against the individual investor.
Not only can investors not trust
their follow shareholders they
cant trust theverypeople running
the company.
For these reasons I like to invest
in businesses with strong family
ownership. This assures me of fel-
low shareholder commitment to
the long-termsuccess ofmy invest-
ment, and that the directors are
managing thebusiness in favourof
theshareholdersandnot theirown
interests.
Examples of local business with
strong family interest include
British American Tobacco and
South African Breweries.

Taxi tariffs take a
petrol-bombing
Within a month the price of fuel has risen
twice, forcing taxis to chargemore and leav-
ing commuters to dig even deeper into their
pockets.
An increase of 21c and 23c in the pump
pricesof93-and95-octanepetrolrespectively
happened yesterday, as announced by the
Department of Energy.
A litre of 95 ULP will now cost motorists
R11,85. This rise follows Septembers hefty
93-cent increase, which pushed the petrol
price up to R11,62.
According to the department, the in-
creases are due to higher international
prices and a weaker rand.
As a result of the two recent hikes, Helder-
bergTaxiForumchairpersonAlfredCarelse
says, as of 1 November, commuters using
taxis will be required to pay an extra R1 for
their trips.
The followingmain routes will be affected
by the new taxi tariff: StrandSomerset
West, Sir Lowrys PassSomerset West,
MacassarSomerset West and Lwandle

SLK55 AMG: the
vulgar perfection
HANJO STIER
IM not quite sure who
Im writing todays re-
view of the Mercedes-
Benz SLK55 AMG for
except avid petrol heads
and, judging by the few
brief sightings of its
predecessor, grey-
haired gentlemenwith a
penchant for smooth
jazz and traffic light
grands prix.
Should this speed-
freaks recipe not be abun-
dantly clear in the accom-
panying photo, let me re-
cap. You simply take a
small, two-seater sports
car and shoe-horn a big,
nasty engine into the
thing. This TVR/AC Co-
bra combination is also
hugely popular with any
speeding law enforcement
agencies.
Mercedes tuning divi-
sionAMGhasattacked the
little coup/convertible
SLK since generation one,
producing the 260kW su-
percharged V6 SLK32
AMG, followed by the
265kW5.5LV8SLK55AMG
and now this the all-new
310kW 5.5L V8 SLK55
AMG.
The SLK also follows
Mercs new look with a
blunt, pedestrian-friendly
front endwhichmakes the
cars nose seem even long-
er.
Between that and the
beautiful, plain rear end,
AMGhas dollied-up the al-
ready snazzy SLKwith big
wheels, low bumpers, fins,
diffusers, slashes and four
exhaust pipes.
Considering the en-
gines fire power it seems
suitable, but isnt exactly
understated. I hope it
doesnt scare off too many
jazz-lovin silver foxes.
The interior is equally
modern with huge silver
surfaces, new instruments
and old air vents, big dis-
plays and contrasting ele-
ments between its quality
materials and solid build.
Standard equipment is
impressive with satnav,
ABS/BAS, Bluetooth, ac-
tive Xenon lights, heated
seats with neck warmers,
leather, electric every-
thing and auto everything
else.
Options include a pano-
ramic glass panel in the
folding metal roof or Mag-
icSky a two-stage trans-
parent or opaque roof for
R16 000.
Speaking of stages, the
SLK55s engine, gearbox
and ESP have various set-
ting for you to tinkerwith.
The car barks briefly at
start-up but settles into a
quietly rumbling idle. The
gearboxs Comfortmode
shifts quickly and the mo-
tor stays quiet, often using
its cylinder de-activation
to shut down half the en-
gine and save fuel.
Unfortunately, I found
the transition from four to
eight cylinders rather
jerky and the stuttering
four-pot sound was just as
unpleasant.
Switch to Sport mode
and the system (including
its stop/start function) are
forgotten as the exhausts
get louder and the car
holds onto gears a little
longer.
You could also switch to
the ESPs Sport mode,
which livens things up
even further and while
youre at it, you may as
well drop theroof (onlyun-
der 10 km/h) and put the
gearbox in Manual
mode for maximum enjoy-
ment. NowYOUcommand
the quick gear changes
with hissing and popping
from that incredible en-
gine.
Its loosely based on
Mercs outgoing 5.5 natu-
rally-aspirated V8; now
with high-pressure direct-
injection, fairy dust lin-
ings and titanium gobbins
that allow it to produce
421hp and rev to 7 000rpm
with linear brutality,
changing from deep howls
to raspyhammering as the
instrument panel goes red
to suggest a gear change.
Switch the ESP off and
the SLK55 becomes even
twitchier than it already is
I found the best compro-
mise to be Manual mode
with Sport or full ESP, de-
pending on the road.
The quick, direct steer-
ing comes alive at higher
speeds, the car sits nicely
and as long as you treat it
with respect, the AMG
SLK will diligently carve
up your favourite corners.

in 5,2 seconds (claimed
4,7); our average consump-
tion of 14 L/100 km is
alarming for such a small
car, amazing for such a
huge engine and surely an
all-time low record for an
AMG.
Thanks to its fuel saving
systems, you can achieve
10, forget the claimed 8,5,
but expect 20+ when can-
ing it.
And cane it you will, I
guarantee it. The SLK55 is
slightly vulgar, rather ex-
pensive, hard sprung and
potentially dangerous, but
its also quite clever, very
luxurious, highly reward-
ing and exhilarating.
This is a ridiculous car
for rich people who like to
show off and it masters
that with perfection.
Its rivalsmayofferother
hot little convertibles, but
nobody makes a tiny V8
roadster except AMG.
You could buy the more
sedate, more practical
four-seaterBMW650,Benz
E500 or Jag XK converti-
bles but to match the SLK
AMGs thrills, youd have
to triple the price and get
an SL AMG, Aston Martin
or Ferrari drop-top.
This exclusivity is also
the cars lonely disposi-
tion it fills a niche and al-
most seems like a bargain
at a shade under R1m.
Having recently tested the
225kWV6SLK350, handon
heart, Id go for that.
The SLK55 AMG would
just tempt me into crank-
ing up the jazz and getting
photosof thecar inmypost
box. - Galimoto

The affordable and simplistic

FRANS LE ROUX
TATA has been one of those brands
which thanks to poor reliability and
quality issues on their first models
was often overlooked by buyers.
The Indian giant is hoping to overcome
thecompanyspreviousdisappointments
by introducing a truly South African
family car.
The new Indigo Manza is still roughly
based on the original Indigo which greet-
ed our showroom floorsway back in 2004.
Although now vastly improved and
slightly fresher looking the Manza hits
the market hard, with its main competi-
tor being the new Toyota Etios sedan.
Powered by a new 1,4 4-cylinder 16-valve
motor this engine produces a rather safe
66kw/116nm.
It pulls strongly in the first couple of
gears and will happily cruise at 120 kph.
Frugality is themainaimof this 1,4 and
it achieves that with remarkable ease.
Onmy travels I covered close to 500 km
and used a combined average of 14 km/li-
tre.Onthehighwayhoweverfigureswere
closer to 19 km/litre. Acceleration is eve-
rything but brisk, as could be expected
of such a tiny petrol-mill.
However something I wasnt expecting
to find in a Tata was a rev counter that
turns bright red when it hits the limiter.
I quite enjoyed it.On the handling side of
things I was impressed with the way the
steering felt.
A direct turn-in is also aided with the
help of ABS and EBD as standard.
Luckily looks are a personal thing so
you should use your own judgment here.
That high odd-looking rear end and the
high rooflinemake the car appear larger.
In this category the Toyota Etios isnt ex-
actly drop dead gorgeous.
I do like the look of the black 15 rims
and the colour coded mirrors and door
handles look good.
Foglights in the front helps to light the
way in poor visibility.
On the interior-side is where Tata has
improved the most.
Along with a whole list of standard fea-
tures comes a welcomed face-lifted dash-
board.
Two cupholders are situated in front of
the gear lever and the audio system has
Bluetooth, auxiliary and a USB connec-
tion.
Dark plastics are lifted with subtle sil-
ver inserts.
Your cellphone can be operated from
the steering wheel as well as the volume
controls.
Electric windows all round and remote
operated central locking are all nice-to-
haves.
Headroom is more than adequate,
thanks to the high roofline.
Legroom is acceptable and the Manza
offers a very large boot (460 litres). The
seats could do with more side bolstering.
Tata aims to secure potential buyers
with a three year/100 000 km warranty
andavery impressive (class leading) four
year/100 000 km service plan.
Service intervals are set at 25 000 km
to further improve your Tata experience.
AtR134995 it is slightlymoreexpensive
than the Toyota Etios, but it provides a
better warranty and service plan.

BASIC. The new Tata Manza is a basic and simplistic sedan which doesn't dazzle the driver with loads
of extras or a huge 6-cylinder engine. Instead it has all the standard features, a frugal engine 4-cylinder
and a massive boot. Pic: Frans le Roux

Volkswagen Amarok (132kw) D/C TDi :
The dirtyweekend
HANJO STIER
WHEN last have you been to
the dentist or spent some time
with your mother-in-law?
Ill avoidansweringbothques-
tions, but can report that this
past weekend, I did something I
tend to avoid like the plague:
drive a double-cab.
Which one? A bi-turbo Volks-
wagen Amarok 4x2.
I usually take considerable de-
tours around bakkies-and-a-
half; the last time I drove such
a vehicle was at the brand-new
Amarok launch, exactly two ye-
ars ago.
And that only happened after
numerous failedattempts to find
somebody who could take my
place.
I detest double-cabs because
theyhave twobodiesand twodif-
fering suspensions on one chas-
sis.
This gives them the handling
characteristics of a two-part cos-
tume cow; with a soft front and
hard rear end.
Before I launch an attack on
their cruise liner steering and
holding cell interiors, I should
mention that I understand why
they feature so strongly in our
local sales charts. Their versati-
lity is exactly what the average
familywithownbusinessandac-
tive outdoor lifestyle wants.
When aweekendwith 4x4 pre-
ferenceswasonthecardsandmy
own set of wheels failed in the
cargo department, an Amarok
bi-TDi 4x2 double-cab suddenly
appeared inmy life.Reluctantly,
I took the giant home where it
swallowed our luggage with ab-
solute ease.
It didnt take me long to warm
to the brute yet I managed to re-
sist the bakkie driver pose; dan-
gling my entire arm out of the
window.
The competition may tease
that only milk, juice and Ama-
roks come in two litres, but the
hasty 132kW/400Nm turbo-die-
sel in this application allowed
easy overtaking and smooth
cruising at 130 km/h.
Thescenerywhizzingby inre-
lative comfort, ourAmarokonly
struggled on long inclines in top
gear. Other than that, and espe-
cially for double-cab standards,
it has a supremely quiet cabin,
very comfortable seats and an
interior look n feel thats very
close to a car.
I loved that.
The Argentinian-built Ger-
man has garnered more flak
thannecessaryand Icanonlyre-
port on two issues: second gear
can get crunchy once the gear-
box is up to temperature and we
founda leakydoor seal on the re-
ar off-side door.
VW is aware of this sporadic
issueand,asa friendofminejust
found out, a fix is now available.
Once the stop/go road works
had annoyedus enough,we jum-
ped off the highway and pointed
the Amarok at some rather inti-
midating mountains.
Its on-road behaviour is com-
mendable, but I was in for a live-
ly reunion of double-cab, dirt ro-
ad, leaf springs and rear-wheel-
drive.
Wet or dry, the VW (like any
other D/C) is very tail-happy on
loose surfaces, especially if
youre used to a predictable
front-wheel-drive or rock-steady
four-wheel-drive.
Our test car was a 4x2 so in
sheer jealousy, pardon, despera-
tion I pressed theOff-RoadMode
button. This made things much
worse.
Meant for slower speeds and
steep descents, the computer in-
terfered so much that we were
fish-tailing our way through al-
most every corner until the bo-
thersome system was switched
off. What you need for higher
speeds on a heavily corrugated
road is common sense, a steady
right foot and quick reflexes.
And may I suggest getting an
Amarok for this task, if just for
its marvellous interior?
The seating positions are gre-
at, the pedals and steering are
light and responsive, all other
controls are intuitive and even
whentheroadresembledamine-
field, not a single rattle could be
heard. Not one.
Deep inside the weekend geta-
way, our Amarok traversed in-
sane amounts of sand, mud and
water with confidence and at
alarmingly different speeds.
The foul weather often called
on the services of its rear diff-
lock until the white coat of paint
had turned a beautiful two-tone
brown.
All thewhile
we travelled in
absolute com-
fort with cli-
mate control,
remote central
locking, four
airbags, CD/
mp3 sounds
and an avera-
ge consumpti-
on of 11 L/100
km from the 80
L fuel tank
quite a bit off
the manufac-
turers claim
(8), but hugely
impressive
considering
the amount of
off-roading we
had done.
Our journey
home was
quick, quiet and dirty; everyone
agreed thatmuck-brownwas the
best colour for a bakkie and as
much as I hate to admit this, I
umm, Ill miss the Amarok.
It has teeny-tiny niggles, but
heaps of advantages like its inte-
rior, looks, specs, wide load-bed
with LED light and an eager, fu-
el-efficient engine.
The Amarok Double-cab
Highline Bi-TDi 4x2 costs
R375 100 and comes with a 3-ye-
ar/100000kmwarrantyand5-ye-
ar/90 000 km service plan.
Should I really have to buy a
double-cab, thiswould feature at
the top of my list. Any chance of
a petrol V6 or V8 model?
- Galimoto Media
SPACE. The newly facelifted 132kw 2.0 bi-Tdi Amarok now packs even more punch. With arguably the best bakkie interior,
this workhorse should really be considered. Pic: QuickPic
