NOE Big Brother, Big Sister Program By: Brad Trostle

Adams County Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) sponsors an after school program at New Oxford Elementary. The name of the program is S.M.A.R.T., which stands for Students and Mentors Achieving Results Together. Each year responsible, caring, and dedicated high school students are recruited to mentor these elementary students. They go to New Oxford Elementary every Tuesday after school and assist their ‘littles’ with homework, read, create a craft or do an art project. Twenty-five high school students have recruited for the S.M.A.R.T. program, and with their ‘littles’ the total students involved will stand at fifty. It is simply a wonderful experience to see these students working together to improve grades, behavior, attitudes, and self-esteem. One quickly realizes the benefit of this program work both ways, those ‘littles’ often teach the ‘bigs’ from the high school a thing or two! I’d like to personally thank Adams County Big Brothers Big Sisters for sponsoring this event. I’d also like to thank the high school students who selflessly volunteer to mentor these fine elementary students. Finally, I’d like to thank New Oxford Elementary school for their interest and support in this

Students recently recognized were Bermudian Springs High School, senior, Ted Marines, son of Ted and Debora Marines and from New Ox-ford High School, senior, Madeline Overmoyer, daughter of Donald and Lori Over-moyer. Madeline was sponsored by New Oxford High School English teacher, Ashlie Murren. Madeline is the Student Council President for 2013-14 and dabbles in everything – FBLA, Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl. She works at Perkins and belongs to an outside of school dance group. Madeline spent five weeks at the Governor’s School for Science in Pittsburgh this past summer. She plans to pursue Science in college but has not selected a college at this point.

Mrs. Jessica Felix, who has been the librarian at Conewago Township Elementary for the past five years, is now the librarian for both CTE and NOE. This change requires that Mrs. Felix rotate between the two schools every other day. Inside Story Headline

Birds of Prey Demonstrate Courage

During the spring of 2013, students in the National Art Honor Society at New Oxford High School participated in The Memory Project. The Memory Projectis a unique initiative in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world who have been neglected, orphaned, or disadvantaged. Assuming that children in such situations tend to have few personal keepsakes, one purpose of the portraits is to provide them with special mementos that capture a piece of their childhood. Our art students received photos of children from Haiti and selected the medium to create the

portrait. Then, the Memory Project team members deliver the portraits to the children as gifts, and take photos of the children holding the portraits/video so the art students can see the delivery. Here are a few of their finished portraits.

Jack Hubley, Master Falconer, presented his Bird of Prey assembly September 6, 2013 at Conewago Township Elementary School. Hubley kicked off the Core Essentials Program to promote important values to students. The first value for the year is “Courage” and Jack used his bird of prey assembly to highlight this value. He brought with him a Red-Tailed Hawk, an American Kestrel, a Peregrine Falcon, and a Great Horned Owl. The students were excited to learn about the life cycle, adaptations of the birds, and courage it takes to work with Birds of Prey and the courage to survive as a bird of prey.

The Adams County Business Education Partnership sponsors a mentoring program and New Oxford High School par-ticipates in this wonderful opportunity every year. A committee of folks from New Oxford, Gettysburg, Bermudian, and Fairfield High Schools, along with Dr. Fred Guinn and with the unwavering support of the Gettysburg/Adams Chamber of Commerce seek community leaders to mentor high school students in each of our respective schools. This program matches mentors to students in their junior and senior year of high school. Through the mentoring relation-ship they work with one another on issues of self-esteem, career planning, workforce skills development, honing inter-viewing skills, and a whole host of other beneficial character development skills. This year New Oxford has eight students in this program. If you, or someone you know, would like to mentor a high school student, please contact Edith Waldron at the Gettysburg/Adams Chamber of Commerce, or Brad Trostle at New Oxford High School Guidance Office.
