“DGs Despatch”

Hello and welcome to the New Year. I trust all of you had a relaxing time and enjoyed the company of family and friends. As I am writing this piece just before Christmas to meet the deadline you never know what will happen over the break. My wish is that we do not have any major disasters similar to those recently experienced in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and other areas around Australia. Appeals have been started to assist with the relief work needed and if your club can assist with a donation to the Australian Lions Foundation it will be appreciated.

I recently had cause to call on the assistance of the Australian Lions Foundation to assist the family of a badly injured young man, who was here on a working holiday, from Lancashire in England. Mark suffered a severe brain injury in a motorcycle mishap and now finds himself in Royal Perth hospital for an extended stay as he recovers. We were able to secure a compassionate grant to help the family with their expenses as they all came to Australia to be with their son and brother. It has been a rewarding experience helping at this time and the circumstances the family find themselves in is heartbreaking. These grants have been made possible by a very generous donation from Dick Smith, who gave the Australian Lions Foundation $1 000 000 in 2013 for such compassionate grants.

As the months pass we move closer to our Centennial

Year in 2017. Thank you to the

clubs who have pledged funds

to the 100 years and 100

stories of service promotion

and may you all find it

rewarding for your club and

community. Do not forget to

keep reporting your clubs

activities on the MyLCI site

every month so that

we can show the world the value of our great organization.

News was circulated recently about the trailer that is being built by the Lions Eye Institute to be used in the Outback Vision Program. Professor Angus Turner is driving this project and with help of Lions and also many generous corporate donors, this facility will be able to take state of the art eye care to remote parts of our state. A great promotion for Lions and the service we provide.

The Lions “Children of Courage” function is again being held on the 3rd of April this year. If your club is sponsoring a child some information will be coming to your club soon regarding the attendance of members. This is a great project but unfortunately it has got to the stage that so many people want to attend that the facilities at the Pan Pacific cannot hold everybody. I hope you will understand this day is about the children and their families. Pan Pacific is extremely generous in their support but they can only cater for specific numbers for safety and other reasons.

The Children's Razzmatazz Shows are also on again in May. Put the 18th of May in your diary and if you want to come along to the Perth Convention Center on the day and assist and find what the project is all about, you are welcome. More information will be sent out closer to the day.

Early this year Immediate Past District Governor Ivan Sturgess will be hosting a meeting to elect a 2nd Vice District Governor. There were no candidates nominated at the recent convention so a meeting will be held and eligible Lions will be able to nominate. Keep an eye out for an invitation soon and if you need more information ask one of the team and we can give it to you.

Until next month

LIONS HEARING FOUNDATION The Lions Hearing Foundation are pleased to announce that the inaugural award of the Arthur and Lorna Dodd Award has been presented to Lion Lorna Dodd.

It was agreed by all Board members to present this award to Lion Lorna for her dedication to the Foundation.

Lorna was a Lions Lady from 1973 when her husband, the late Arthur, joined Manning Lions Club. As was expected she was a very busy Lions Lady and supported the Club with enthusiasm. Lion Arthur died in 1993 and she joined the Club in 1994 when lady members were accepted.

As she had been associated with the Board since 1980 when Arthur joined, she was elected to join in 1995 and has been a member since and rarely misses a meeting.

In the six years I have been on the Board, Lorna has always been positive and constructive at meetings and is a well respected member of the Lions Hearing Foundation.

The photograph shows the presentation with L to R District Governor 201W1 Colin Heap, Chairman, Lion Chris Smelt, Lorna

Dodd and District Governor 201W2 Allan Cooper.

“AAA” AWARD SURPRISE FOR DOCTOR AT

DUNCRAIG LIONS CLUB A very surprised and humble Doctor Kishore Sieunarine was given an Exemplary Service Award by Duncraig Lions at their Christmas windup meeting on 8th December 2015.

He is a vascular surgeon who gives his time free of charge testing for Abdominal Aortic Aneurisms, or AAA as the condition is commonly referred to. This is done by an ultrasound procedure which is non invasive and takes only a few minutes. If an aneurism is left untreated one in three will rupture, causing death in more than 82% of cases. People at risk are males, smokers, the over 55’s, those with high blood pressure and those with a family history of aneurysms.

Dr Kishore Sieunarine has been screening for abdominal aneurysms for more than 25 years. Over those years he has held many clinics for Lions Clubs around West Australia. Just to mention some clubs he has visited are Dongara-Denison, Jurien Bay and Ocean Reef not to mention this club Duncraig. At your club session at Gibson Park Community Centre 182 members of the public were scanned. This, in itself, is a magnificent achievement and it was voted as a project worth doing for the benefit of the Community.

The Doctor has run scanning for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms for other groups of people. He ran a clinic for a nursing group in Kalamunda recently.

No doubt that over the years the testing performed by Dr Kishore Sieunarine has saved

many lives. We thank him for his valuable expertise and may he be giving his much

needed assistance to the community of West Australia for many years to come.

Lions Memorial Grove of Trees Replanted At the Multiple District Convention held in Tamworth in 1991, the 22 District Governors of the day planted a Gum Tree each in a memorial grove on the banks of the Peel River in the Memorial Service as a remembrance to the Lions and members of the Lions family who had passed away in their District over the past year.

The 20 trees that survived had reached 30 or 40 feet high and were thriving in their natural habitat. Unfortunately the area where the trees were planted was gazetted for the construction of a huge children’s play park. The architects, not being aware of the significance of this grove of trees simply looked on them as trees to be removed. By the time the decision to remove the trees was brought to our attention it was too late to do anything about it. However following a meeting between the 3 Tamworth Lions Clubs and a representative of Australian Lionsonoz, the Tamworth Regional Council agreed to replant a grove of trees to provide the same significance the original grove held, and reinstall the original plaque, identifying the site.

On Saturday 28th November 2015, 4 Tamworth Lions, 5 South Tamworth Lions, 3 Tamworth Peel Valley Lions and 1 Lion from Australian Lionsonoz cleaned out holes previously dug by an auger and planted the first 17 American Ash, Fraxinus Pennsylvanica, in the new grove. The remaining 5 trees will be added later. The type of trees selected were chosen because they give good shade without the danger of falling branches, as Australian Gums are prone to do.

The new grove will enhance the playground area, which is reputed to be one of the best of its kind in the state.

RECRUITMENT WHEEL PETROL VOUCHERS

1. Use a Prospect Sheet, one to each person, have them write their name on top so you know who to go back to for details

2. Call out one category at a time from Recruitment Wheel, give examples where appropriate, and have members write the names down. Do not worry if the details are unavailable at this stage - just the name will do. "Tom the butcher" is better than nothing .

3. When all segments have been finished, collect the sheets and have them collated into a single list.

There will probably be many duplications - remove them. Include the name of the Lion who nominated them

4. Collect the rest of the details for the collated list - addresses and phone numbers etc. Have a team of members contact the prospects, invite them to an information meeting.

6. Follow up the phone invitations with a written invitation

7. Run a good information meeting along the workshop guidelines and you will collect some new members. Remember, think of these people as guests you are inviting into your own home, and treat them accordingly.

Use only willing and confident Lions to do the telephoning and / or calling. Some people are not comfortable doing so,

don't force them! The new member sponsor will normally be the Lion whose name appears on your collated list.
