Rotary Leadership Institute - St. Thomas - January…Don Chandler, Assistant. District. Trainer

Once again we will be offering the Rotary Leadership Institute in St. Thomas. The dates are January 9 and 10, 2010. The sessions will be held at the Windward Passage Hotel, on the waterfront in downtown Charlotte Amalie.

We will be offering the sessions as follows:

Saturday, January 9 Sunday, January 10

Part I Part IIPart III Graduate Membership Course

We have decided to offer the courses as per this schedule so that everyone can participate! If you haven't taken any RLI courses, you can take Part I on Saturday and Part II on Sunday. If you have completed only Part I, you can finish Parts II and III on Saturday and Sunday. If you have finished both I and II, you can take Part III on Saturday, and the Graduate Membership Course on Sunday. Anyone who is a graduate of RLI (taken parts I, II and III) is welcome to sign up for the Graduate Membership Course.

The Graduate Membership course is an exciting new offering, focused on attracting and retaining Club Members. It explores in depth why people join Clubs, what their needs are, how to keep them and much more.

A great social event is planned for Saturday evening. The Rotary Club of STT Sunrise has their annual "White Elephant Sale" at "On the Rocks", the fabulous home of Tom Bolt and Jeni Smith. They have opened the event to all RLI attendees, as they did in a previous year.

We are trying to get special rates at the Windward Passage for out-of-town attendees. We'll forward more information about that as available. Sign up now at: www.rlitraining.org.

*** CAYMAN ROTARY SUNRISE ***

CAYMAN ROTARY SUNRISE SENDS SHELTERBOXES TO THE PHILIPPINES.…by Hendrik van Genderen.

Typhoon Ketsana was only one of the recent natural disasters to devastate the Philippines. Rotary Sunrise decided to help and do their part to ease the burden of those in need. Members passed the hat around at a recent club meeting to collect donations and this was supplemented with funds that the club raised from recent fundraisers.

As a result the club was able to donate three (3) Shelterboxes to the disaster victims in the Philippines.

Shelterbox is a non-profit organization, established in 2000, with support from a Rotary club in the UK. The organization has firmly established itself at the forefront of international disaster relief. The boxes are deployed worldwide in response to disasters.

Each shelterbox contains a tent, bedding, cooking utensils and other basic needs to provide a shelter for 10 people. The organization works with local Rotary clubs and other volunteers, so the financial overheads are minimal and the vast majority of donations end up with those who need it most. Shelterboxes have been deployed in over 50 countries in the wake of 80 disasters. The sponsorship of one box is $1,000 US dollars including delivery.

Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value. Each box bears its own unique number allowing donors to track their boxes all the way to its recipient country via the web.

Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide.

In response to the support from the Rotarians of Rotary Sunrise, President Winston Connolly said, “We feel sorry for the people of the Philippines, who have to endure similar circumstances as we suffered from in the wake of hurricane Ivan. After Ivan the Rotary clubs of the Cayman Islands received over 1 million US dollars in donations from all over the world. This made such a difference in our community. This is our time to give back and show our support."

Rotary SUNRISE was chartered in 2002, has 93 members, mostly young professionals from Cayman and 23 other countries worldwide, having fun helping in the community. Rotary SUNRISE meets every Wednesday for breakfast at 7.00 a.m. at Grand Old House, Grand Cayman.

ROTARY CENTRAL SUPPORTS JUNIOR ACHIEVERS

Members of Rotary Central welcomed local students to their weekly meeting recently to hear about their experiences at the Junior Achievement Exchange (JAX) conference, which was held in Hamilton, Ontario, in August of this year.

Every year Rotary Central sponsors local students to attend the JAX (formerly CANJAC) conference, which is a major leadership event for youth. At last week’s meeting Rotarians heard from students Saneta Smith and Lloyd Barker about what happened at the event and what it meant to them.

At left - Vice-President Ravi Kapoor, President, Paul Byles, Saneta Smith, Angelica Bodden, Lloyd Barker, Neville Smith

Rotary Central President, Paul Byles, said, “Our club places a lot of emphasis on developing our youth,” adding, “It is very encouraging to see bright young Caymanians embracing opportunities such as these so enthusiastically.”

The students’ presentation also recounted experiences from their involvement in the local Junior Achievement (J.A.) programme in Cayman, in which both students were recognized as being among the top eight Junior Achievers at a programme banquet in April.

“I am proud to say that Saneta, Lloyd and Angelica are real examples of future leaders of Cayman in the making," noted Rotarian Ravi Kapoor, who has been a J.A. board member for 19 years and is Rotary Central's Director responsible for JA this year. "We have seen over 3,000 achievers come through the program since it started in 1991 and today many of the first achievers are taking up leadership positions in their professional fields and giving back to the community that supported them.” This year's programme has started with over 177 Achievers in 12 companies.

Mr. Kapoor continued, "We are very grateful to all the local companies who sponsor the Junior Achievement programme and have continued to give their support in this challenging economic climate.”

The J.A. Programme is designed to develop young people’s leadership skills and enhance their understanding of business and commerce in society. With the support and guidance of volunteer advisors from the business community, J.A.’s Company Programme

provides basic economic education for high school students. By organizing and operating an actual business enterprise, local students not only learn how businesses function, they also learn about the structure of Cayman’s economy and the benefits it provides.

Persons or organizations who are interested in finding out more about the Junior Achievement programme may call the J.A. office at (345) 949-4306 or email [email protected]

ROTARY WINNER SUPPORTS LOCAL CHILDREN…submitted by Louis Payne

Rotary Central’s Music Extravaganza is an annual event that raises funds for important projects and programmes that serve the local community. So it is only fitting that the winner of the $40,000 grand prize raffle at this event has chosen to use her winnings to support local under privileged children via the Positive Interventions Now programme, run by the Anglican Church Community.

Ms. Jean Solomon was the lucky winner whose ticket was pulled from all the tickets purchased for the November 28 event. “I just felt so blessed to win the grand prize and I am thrilled to be able to assist Positive Interventions,” said Ms. Solomon.

Twelve Year-6 children from George Town Primary school submitted a wish list to Ms. Solomon of items they would like for Christmas and will now receive.

At left - Rotary Central President, Paul Byles (centre left) and Jean Solomon (centre right) with this year’s winners.

Ms. Solomon will also take them to a movie night. “I have always felt it is very important to give back to the community in whatever way you can, so it feels great to be able to support such a worthy cause. It also shows the children that their community cares about them.”

Ms. Solomon will also use part of the funds to further her son’s overseas training to become a pilot.

Mr. Paul Byles, President of Rotary Central, described the event as “a huge success” and wanted to thank “all of the company sponsors, the media, the Rotary Central Committee, the performers, and the public who continue to give such strong support to our Music Extravaganza each year.” He especially wanted to commend Ms. Solomon for her generosity and community spirit.

Dozens of other prizes, both cash and merchandise, were awarded to ticket buyers and in a separate draw for ticket sellers. Many of these prizes were donated by some of the best restaurants and shops in Cayman. In total over 53 vendors provided prizes including gift certificates for goods and services such as jewelry, airline tickets, iPods, Caybrew beer and much, much more.

The Music Extravaganza draws very large crowds each year for a great night of fun and dancing with Cayman’s most talented local musicians.

ROTARY AND ROTARACT CLUBS OF** NEW KINGSTON, JAMAICA **

…PP Locksley Lindo, Rotary Club of New Kingston

Swallowfield Chapel’s Learning Centre is a collaborative effort between Swallowfield Chapel and the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of New Kingston. This initiative began almost five years ago, as Swallowfield Chapel sought to revive its Homework Centre Outreach Ministry and the Rotary Club of New Kingston moved to establish a GSAT project for inner-city children.

Classes were held every Saturday morning; with the Rotarians originally conducting tutorial sessions in Math and Language Arts, whilst Garcia Imoru, who still teaches on the programme, would come up with creative activities to deal with the 10 younger siblings. With the growth in numbers and consistency in attendance, we decided to shift our focus from assisting with homework to teaching literacy.

Today, our numbers stand at 63 students and we have changed our name from the Homework Center to the Learning Centre, where our focus is on literacy and of course on Grade Six Achievement Test exams. Our population of 63 students is organized into 6 groups, not based on their ages or grade levels, but based on their reading abilities.

The Chapel and the Rotary Club provide the children with a hot breakfast and a light snack at the end of the morning's proceedings.

At left - Janelle Henry of Manchester High School receiving her computer at the club meeting from President Olajide Adekeye with the assistance of International club service director Michael Walker. In the background is District Polio Chair Lyden D. Trevor Heaven.

This project was as a result of contributions from our partners – The Rotary club of Cape Coral Gold Coast in Florida, USA. Our gratitude goes to the club’s past president Mrs. Milley Burden and other members of that club.

It all started about 2 years ago during the presidency of PP Dale Greaves-Smith when the club built 2 class rooms for New Green Primary and Junior High School. The Rotary club of Cape Coral Gold Coast was contacted to assist in furnishing the classrooms.

PP Milley Burden of the Cape Coral club visited Mandeville, Jamaica, last year during the handing over of an anaesthestic machine to the hospital, a matching grant project with Cape Coral club. She saw the need for the computers and books in these schools and promised that her club will get some old computers and refurbish them for this project. She is a computer specialist and so it was not difficult to get the project started.

The whole project includes 20 refurbished desktop computers, 1 used projector, 2 printers, about 1500 books, over 800 clothes, 2 scanners, 1 Cardiac defibrillator, 2 vital sign monitors, gloves, medical scrubs and medical disposables. The total value of these materials is estimated at about USD33, 500.

This project is part of our major projects to the community to educate, empower and develop the children in our community and also to assist in the health care and to alleviate poverty in the country.

HISTORY OF PARTNERING WITH ROC WHEELS (USA) ANDPROJECT DETAILS FROM INCEPTION TO COMPLETION

In June of 2008, at the Rotary International Convention in Los Angeles, California (USA), I met with representatives of ROC (Reach Out and Care) Wheels, a nonprofit organization located in Bozeman, Montana, who facilitated the supply of custom made wheelchairs and other mobility devices for disabled individuals in developing countries that will help reduce barriers to, and enhance mobility for, these individuals, especially children.

At left – Kathy (green top) from ROC Wheels along with Project Chair Bhagwan Chuganey and recipients of wheelchairs.

On behalf of Rotary Club of Montego Bay, and in my capacity as Director of International Service, I expressed interest in partnering with them to bring custom-fit wheelchairs to benefit the community in Montego Bay and its surroundings in Western Jamaica.

We communicated with ROC Wheels back and forth for over a year. Measurement Worksheets were sent to us, and with the help of a professional therapist, we completed these worksheets along with photographs of about 100 applicants with serious disabilities at the following locations:

West Haven Children’s Home Blessed Assurance Children’s Home

Children receiving special treatment at Cornwall Regional Hospital, and St. James Infirmary

In September 2009, we received good news from ROC Wheels that a 40-foot container worth multimillion Jamaican Dollars was being prepared for shipment to Jamaica. A Jamaican non-profit organization, “Food for the Poor” accepted the handling of the shipping, clearing, and transportation costs of the Container to Montego Bay.

The container arrived in Montego Bay in November 2009.

A team from ROC Wheels comprising 8 members headed by Mr. Andrew Babcock (Executive Director), Ms. Holly Floyd (Associate Director) and other therapists and specialists arrived on the Island by November 28, 2009, to personally custom fit the wheelchairs as per needs of the individual recipients.

The Press in Jamaica gave this Project and Rotary and its partners extensive coverage in the local media.

ROTARY CLUB OF ST. MAARTEN SUNRISE …submitted by Rtn.Meredith Boekhoudt

Thank You to all the volunteers who put in their time and effort into the fundraiser at Caribbean Home Expo -- Rotarians, Interactors, ADG Louis, family and friends! Also Thank You to the organizers of Caribbean Home Expo!

And now for the amount you have been waiting for. How much was collected? Including different pledges, we collected a total sum of US$ 1,500 !

This brings us to a total collection of US $7,300. We still need US$7,800 more to get to the total amount needed of US $15,000

One final big fundraiser will be necessary in order to finalize this worthy project. Thank you again.

At left - Louis, PP Meredith Boekhoudt, PP Irma Gumbs from the Rotary Saint Martin Sunrise Club.

Background of the project

The Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise , after speaking with pediatrician, Dr. P. Offringa, set out to raise funds to buy a much-needed piece of medical equipment, a so-called “warm bed.”

This “warm bed” will be used to take care of babies who need special care.

Sunrise Rotary Club has been raising funds, and has passed the one-third mark thanks to donations from the members of Rotary Club of St. Maarten Mid-Isle, Rotary Club of St. Maarten, and Rotary Club of Saint-Martin Nord, and its own members, as well as from family and many personal and corporate friends of Rotary.

Sunrise Rotary is committed to finishing this very important project. More funds are necessary in order to be able to donate this “warm bed” for the benefit of the pediatric ward of St. Maarten Medical Center. The total funds needed is $15,000.

The organizers of Caribbean Home Expo donated for a second year a booth to the club to promote its fundraising efforts. The Sunrise Rotary members who were present at the Expo provided information about the project and about Rotary in general.

WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH

February is designated World Understanding Month on the Rotary calendar. The month also includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary, held on 23

February 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace Day.

The RI Board asks all Rotary clubs to observe World Understanding Month by planning programs for their weekly meetings and undertaking special activities to

emphasize “understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace.”

*** ROTARY CLUB OF NASSAU SUNRISE *** …submitted by Karen Pinder

The Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise held a campaign during the holidays for the purpose of saving the island.

Plastic grocery bags are everywhere and their numbers are staggering. No matter how careful we are, they end up as unsightly litter on our roadways, beaches, and in our oceans.

These littered plastic bags are an eyesore and send a poor message to visitors about The Bahamas. However, these bags not only mar the beauty of our surroundings, but pose a real threat to wildlife. One study estimated that 100,000 marine animals are killed annually by plastic bags.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! The simple act of taking a reusable green bag to the grocery store will help keep The Bahamas clean and save marine animals from a terrible death.

ROTARY FIRSTS

Rotary established the Rotary Endowment Fund in 1917, which became the forerunner of The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary first established the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition in 1957 for contributors of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary emblem was printed on a commemorative stamp for the first time in 1931 for the Vienna convention.
