TECHNOLOGY

Dr. Angie White presented four sessions at the Kentucky Society for Technology in Education (KySTE) Conference which was held in Louisville March 9-11. Dr. White presenting Maker Spaces 101, Maker Spaces: You Have a Space, Now What? and Choosing the Right Learning Management System for Your District. Dr. White is available to support and provide professional learning on these and other topics in OVEC schools and districts. The Instructional Technology Network met on March 24th focusing on game design/coding. Weston Hagan from Let’s Start Coding! demonstrated a coding toolkit; Laura Raganas demonstrated Touch Develop, a coding program which is part of Imagine Academy; and Keith Barnes shared a summary of the gaming/coding sessions at KySTE. Participants also shared information from KySTE sessions attended. As follow up to the December Instructional Technology Network meeting which focused on Maker Spaces, a visit to a couple of Maker Spaces in Northern Kentucky was planned. On March 17th a group from OVEC districts visited Heidi Neltner’s Maker Space in the library at Johnson Elementary School in Ft. Thomas and the Northern Kentucky MakerSpace in Burlington. This was an incredible visit! Attendees witnessed classes in the library working on projects as a part of Project Based Learning (PBL) and how the makerspace was managed in a small library with limited resources. Attendees were provided a tour of the Northern Kentucky Makerspace by Ryan Kellinghaus in the afternoon. The makerspace has six rooms—Make Your Own…, Engineering, 3D Printing, Audio Engineering, Video Production, and Robotics. The Northern Kentucky Makerspace is hosting the World Maker & Inventor Expo on April 23, 2016 from 10:00-4:00 at Boone County High School which districts may choose to attend. Progress Monitoring.....More than Just a Graph ! How do special educators develop an effective plan for monitoring student’s annual goals and estimating progress toward those annual goals? A plan must be in place which include the appropriate annual goals, specially designed instruction, data collected on a regular basis, monitoring and analysis of progress. This plan is called Progress Monitoring! So why progress monitoring? Progress monitoring measures progress toward annual goals and allows teachers to determine the effectiveness of the specially designed instruction. Through progress monitoring, instructional decisions are guided by analyzing the data and adjusting instruction to ensure progress continues. In addition, progress monitoring determines the current level of student performance in academic and non- academic areas, and this data is valuable for subsequent IEP develop as well as the reevaluation process and determining continuing eligibility. OVEC now provides a professional development opportunity for teachers designed to assist them in developing and implementing a progress monitoring system. Learning targets from this session will enable participants to :

Define & identify methods of measurement.

Collect, graph, interpret data using the aim line and trend line

Analyze data and make instructional decisions about student.

Develop a written analysis in order to communicate progress monitoring data

Develop a linkage between progress monitoring and writing present levels for annual goal development

Topics included: Program Reviews – Progressions, Standards, and Evidence and World Languages Updates from the National Level. 2016 Visiting Teachers from Spain Program: Call for Applications Apply now to host a Visiting Teacher from Spain for the 2016-17 school year. Visit this website for more information: http://www.mecd.gob.es/eeuu/en or contact Alfonso de Torres Nunez at KDE. Launch or Expand Your Spanish Program Since 2000, KDE has worked with the Spanish Ministry of Education to help local school districts fill vacant P-12 Spanish and ESL teacher positions, as well as positions for other content areas. Through this program, school districts have the option to hire teachers from Spain on approved Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) limited certificate contracts, renewable for up to three years. These teachers are experienced, certified, native-speaking language educators eager for a teaching experience in the United States. Local school districts hire the Visiting Teachers in accordance with all other local policies in terms of salary scale, certification and local system requirements. KDE handles initial interviewing in Madrid, secures J1 Visas, and provides the teachers with an orientation/pre-services training and follow-up visits. Schools must commit to mentor the teachers and help them adjust socially to their new environment. UK Confucius Institute Programs with the K-12 Schools in Kentucky The UK Confucius Institute’s K-12 Chinese Language, Culture Development and Enhancement Program is designed to help Kentucky schools develop Chinese language and culture study programs and to promote international exchange between the United States and China. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND EFFECTIVENESS SYSTEM

Certified Evaluation Plans The passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in December 2015 will bring changes to components of the nation’s educational system. The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), along with individual districts and schools, will continue to work and adapt to these changes as new regulations are passed in regard to ESSA. In the interim, Kentucky must continue to implement the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Waiver through August 2016. As we await guidance from the U.S. Department of Education (USED), KDE has decided upon the following changes to Certified Evaluation Plan (CEP) requirements during this transition period. By May 15, any district that has not already done so, should submit a CEP using Other Professionals Growth and Effectiveness System (OPGES) for personnel decisions to: [email protected]. However, for the 2016-17 school year, it is a district decision whether to include District Certified Personnel (DC PGES) for personnel decisions. Additional guidance will be forthcoming as KDE receives information from USED. If you have questions, please contact Todd Davis at: [email protected] or 502-564-1479, ext. 4537.

OVEC/CKEC ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM PRINCIPALS/DIRECTORS NETWORK MEETING

The next meeting of the Alternative Program Principals/Directors Network Meeting is planned in partnership with CKEC. This partnership was created many years ago when CKEC approached OVEC about being a partner in the work. It gives our region a broader perspective in learning from others and in networking! The 3rd meeting/visit will be in Anderson County on April 21, from 9:30 – 12:00 noon at the APEX Academy at Anderson County High School. Principal Steve Swank is looking forward to sharing the story of how Anderson County has overhauled their Phoenix Academy to become the APEX Program (Achieving Personal Excellence). To register for this meeting, please go to: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=vc5dkreab&oeidk=a07ebirdyzgcb17d8bc We welcome all alternative program principals/directors, and others in the OVEC region to join us anytime for these visits and meetings. If you know of others who should be included but are not on this list, please feel free to forward this email, and let me know who they are so that we can include them in future emails. We think this has been an exciting year of learning for this network in our recent visits to Bullitt County and Fayette County sites! The contact for this is Tina Tipton ([email protected]).

OVEC/JEFFERSON COUNTY/KSB LEADERSHIP CONTENT NETWORKS

Science: In February our theme was “How can the EXAMINATION Of STUDENT/EDUCATOR WORK be supported as a routine for continuous improvement?” Teacher Leaders worked with teachers within their own buildings or districts to gather tasks and student work samples. Teacher Leaders analyzed and offered feedback to these teachers. In both ISLN and STLN we used scenarios featuring student work samples to determine congruency of tasks to our standards and instruction. The” rabbit task” can be used throughout districts in PLC’s to promote capacity in this area. We focused on using phenomena in science to teach the standards so that the science is more real world. Teacher leaders are working on units/tasks focused on phenomena as the compelling question and will bring work samples to the meeting in March. We looked at the Framework for Teaching and CHETL to calibrate the effectiveness of our instruction. We only have one meeting remaining please try to attend. I will have a draft of the science assessment system to share in March. Please contact me to work with individual teachers, teams, PLC’s or for any other support I might offer as teachers strive to fully implement the NGSS in your schools. Please contact me for any support I might offer at [email protected]. Social Studies: In March, teacher leaders participating the Social Studies network in OVEC will conclude their final meeting. They will be tasked with figuring out what supports will be needed in the future to continue to grow as professionals. The overall question “How can a DLT plan, support, and sustain structures and routines that promote continuous growth and improvement?” and we will arrive at this answer through the following targets.

1. Evaluate/refine the District Professional Learning Plan to ensure it focuses on sustaining quality professional learning for all in the coming school year and that it specifically addresses the effective roles of Teacher Leaders to achieving goals.

2. Refine structure/system for educators to learn together and communicate learning. 3. Utilize data collected to plan for implementation of HETL&A and HEPL for the 2016-17 and

sustainability. Will assist teachers to zero in a defining and implementing good practices within their classrooms, PLCs, and DLTs. In February Teachers used KASSS, the practices of inquiry, CHELT, and the FfT to build a task for single lesson within teams. These teams will teach their task and return this month with student work. Even though

Page 11: DISTRICT SERVICES REPORT services... · districts visited Heidi Neltner’s Maker Space in the library at Johnson Elementary School in Ft. Thomas and the Northern Kentucky MakerSpace

11

some of the content is different, because of the flexibility of the KASSS standards, teachers were able to still have the same task. Ultimately we, as a group, will get to see how tasks, instructional choices, and student work are essential components of reflective teaching practices. This is a great group of teachers who are committed to their practice and it has been an honor to have been their facilitator over this past year. All information presented at the SSTLN can be found at http://ovecssnetwork.weebly.com/

COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION

A committee of OVEC and district personnel met to discuss the state of Competency Based Education in the OVEC region. The committee explored three questions: What do we know/what’s in place? What do we need to explore? Next steps? Our Next Meeting is scheduled for March 29th from 1:00-3:00 at OVEC. Proposed Agenda:

1. Decide direction- how could we utilize Active Implementation to proceed with CBL in the region (Christel and Debbie)

2. Share KDE information from phone call (Tracey and Christel) 3. CBL Articles and resources (Molly) 4. Plan a conversation with OVSO (Everyone)

Please contact Tracey Harris ([email protected]) or Christel Bogar ([email protected]) for additional information.

OVEC PERSONNEL DIRECTORS NETWORK MEETINGS AND OVEC EDUCATOR RECRUITMENT FAIR

Jan Calvert, from UL. We shared at the meeting about the UL Teacher Recruitment Fair held on March 16th. Eight of the 13 OVEC districts attending this “fair.” The OVEC Personnel Directors talked about the need to find ways to encourage more staff to seek their principal certification and how to support current principals and assistant principals in their roles. The Directors also shared about the shortage of substitute teachers on Fridays, and asked that OVEC avoid holding trainings on Fridays. The OVEC Educator Recruitment Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20th from 2:00-4:30 PM which is a change in the time from our previous years. We adjusted to a later time to help those that are student teaching to have more time to travel to OVEC. The flyer is at the end of this Report so it could be copied and shared in districts and at UL. We do advertise this event in the Lexington Herald/Leader, Courier Journal (at no charge to our districts) and with the KY colleges and universities. For more information you can contact Tina Tipton ([email protected]).
