Hendriksz
Wapenspreuk: IN U LIG.
2003

• Facebook (NWU-PUK Alumni)• Per e-pos ([email protected])• Mobi-webtuiste (www.pukalumni.mobi/) • Telefonies by 018 299 2768.• Webtuiste www.nwu.ac.za onder alumni

EMBLEM OVER THE YEARS
Burgersdorp-emblem
Totius-Kamp-emblem
In 1921 the Senate instructed Proff JD du Toit and J Kamp to find a devies en spreuk (badge and motto) for the PUK. Mrs Maria Kamp assisted with the prior sketches. The Senate approved the proposal of a seven-branched candelabrum on a shield with the motto In U Lig. From 1923 to 1939 the emblem appeared as the official emblem on the yearbook of the University.ColoursThe colours, maroon, gold and silver were confirmed in 1923.
Hendriksz
During the independence celebrations in 1951 a special emblem was used that was made by FW Leuschner (POK Arts lecurer). From 1952 an emblem was used that was based on the Pierneef design of 1922 and refined by the artist WdeS Hendriksz. This emblem that was in fact the joint product of the artists Pierneef and Hendriksz served as the official emblem of the Puk from 1952 to 1992.
From the early Eighties an effort was made to have the PU for CHE’s emblem registered at the Bureau for Heraldry. Some small changes were made, such as placing the bar with the motto under the shield and the registration ultimately took place on 13 January 1992.The badge is describes as:“In mulberry red, a seven-branched candelabrum, the whole within a silver inner seam. Motto: IN U LIG.

The amalgamation and creation of the North-West University
1997The government has a vision of transforming the landscape of National Higher Education (NHE) so that inequalities of the past can be corrected and sources used more effectively.
The Higher Education Act, Act 101 of 1997, was published to plan, manage and finance the vision of a single national coordinated system.
2001The National Plan for Higher Education was announced and that was the first step toward the restructure of the higher education landscape.
2002Prof Kadar Asmal, Minister of Education, announced that the University of North-West (UNW) and the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education must amalgamate and that the staff and students of the Sebokeng campus of the Vista University must be incorporated into the new institution.
On 1 October Council meetings of the PU for CHE and the UNW suggested in a presentation to the Minister of Education that:- a new tertiary institution must be created; and that- an interim council be compiled from both councils.
2003In April the Minister of Education announced guidelines according to which the amalgamation and incorporation of higher education institutions must take place.
On 20 June the councils of the PU for CHE and the UNW agree that:- the name of the new institution would be North-West University (NWU); and that- the institutional seat would be located in Potchefstroom.
The double link logo was approved by the Joint Councils of the NWU’s Supervisory Committee.
2004On 1 January the North-West University was established by the amalgamation of the University of North-West (UNW), its Mankwe campus, the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE) and its Vaal Triangle campus as a single institution with multi-campuses.

The North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus has a Students’ Council consisting of 15 members. Four members of the Students’ Councils of all three campuses (Vaal, Mafikeng and Potchefstroom) together form the Institutional Students’ Council. Every Students’ Council member, except for the SR chairperson, has an executive committee that manages the portfolio with that SR member. This is a sub structure of the Students’ Council and any student of the NWU Potchefstroom campus can become part of the Students’ Council sub structure by making himself/herself eligible for an executive committee.
Another sub structure of the Students’ Council is the ASAs. ASA is the acronym for Academic Students’ Association and they deal with any academic query or complaint that students may have in their faculty.

NWU-PUK ALUMNI OFFICE
The term or concept of “Alumni” merely refers to ex-students of an institution and the NWU-PUK Alumni office tries to keep regular contact with its ex-students as they (also current students) are connected to their alma mater for life and are also the living evidence of the university’s quality and excellence.
Among others, golf days, rallies and reunions are arranged for alumni as well as a farewell event for departing students. It is therefore important to make contact with you already in your first year.
Communication with alumni occurs in many ways and ex-students can also keep their information updated here to receive communication:• Electronic newsletter called “e-PUKaner” and also the
printed magazine for NWU Alumni – “NWU & U”• Facebook (NWU-PUK Alumni)• By e-mail ([email protected])• Mobi website (www.pukalumni.mobi/) • Telephone at 018 299 2768.• Website www.nwu.ac.za under alumni
