Dear Reader
We are very pleased to report on theDIVA 4 installation for our customerin Stuttgart, Germany. The VVS(Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Asso-ciation) is not only one of the largestusers of DIVA and EFA, they are alsoa long-standing customer, whoalong with MVV (Munich Transportand Tariff Association) made it possi-ble to develop transport planningsoftware more than 25 years ago. Bycontinuing to back mdv productsand support innovation, our joint
success is only validated through our reliable, ongoing partnership. Thearticle not only includes the views of project managers, it also pays par-ticular attention to the experience of staff that work with DIVA on a day-to-day basis.
While we were hard at work transitioning from DIVA 3 to DIVA 4, light railoperators and bus drivers in Stuttgart took to the picket lines. The jobthen fell to EFA to keep passengers up-to-date and informed on theeffects of the strike on city transport.
DIVA 4 can also supply our AVM light module. We report on an applicationat the VRN Transport Authority (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar).
Finally, the second installment of our biannual user group was held inBremerhaven, in the north of Germany. We report on the presentationsand show the event in pictures.
I wish you happy holidays and a successful 2012

DIVA 4 and EFA 10 - Paradigm Change at the VVS
Changed Thinking
Paradigms are a certain way of thinking ora particular world view. This certain way ofthinking seems to imply that our viewspretty much stay constant over time. Yet acity-dweller’s view of public transport (PT)has changed over the past 20 years. Theycan no longer image being without publictransport for their lifestyles in cities. Itenables a degree of mobility that is notavailable with other means of transport.
It is for this reason that the requirementsregarding planning, implementation andmeasuring public transport services haverisen sharply in the past few years. Trans-port authorities are expected to be moreprecise and reliable with electronic mediathan ever before. Hand in hand with thisdevelopment are the increased require-ments on tools that provide these services. But there is a solution to these challengesand it is called ‘DIVA 4’.
Functionality, speed, quality, data security, flexibility, usability, maintainability, trans-parency, standards – these are all characte-ristics of a modern schedule managementsystem, which may even be contradictoryto one another. The following paragraphswill illustrate the places that these qualitiesare being implemented in DIVA 4.
Functions
The job of transport authorities was alwaysto present transport services, to manageand calculate a uniform fare and possibly toadjust the services provided by other trans-port companies. In the past, presentation tasks only inclu-
ded publishing a timetable book and crea-ting stop timetables. Now the requirementsare much greater, especially those whichinclude real-time information. The up-to-the-day and up-to-the-minute timetable isnow required. In addition to print, electro-nic media also have to be supplied, whichincludes individual, mobile, collective andstationary displays, vehicle displays andspoken announcements. The supply of information systems and thecalculation of performance need to bemore precise.DIVA 4 has accommodated elaborate datastructures in which e.g. route-related time-table versions have become possible.Timetables describe the “when” and “where”of a journey. Now with DIVA 4, geographyis an integrated function of the system.Geography is not only the basis for display-ing services, it is also used to locate vehi-cles and support navigation. It is alsoimportant for calculating the kilometer per-formance.
The Database, a Tight Corset
The DIVA 4 Kernel is the database, whichprovides high quality and transparencywhen saving data. Currently the generallyaccepted techniques enable a high level ofdata security. But integrity also has itsprice. Data access is only possible usingdefined processes and interfaces and isthus more computation- and time-inten-sive than the simple writing and reading ofhard disks.
Yet having databases does open up newpossibilities that were not possible in thepast. Two examples follow:
In the past, the stop number was a primarykey. For instance, if a system user wanted tochange a number because two stops wereto be merged to one, complex steps wererequired to make the change, especially ifthere were trips that served this stop. InDIVA 4 the stop number is an attribute thatmust be unique, but that can also bechanged. These kinds of changes are donein just a few clicks.
A popular feature of routes in DIVA 3 wasthe property ‘Service on Christmas Eve andon Saturdays’. To add this feature to a route, one only had to check a box. This kind ofproperty can be modelled with databases, but the impact on the calculation of opera-ting days is enormous. For this reason amore efficient model using the operatingday ‘Saturday’, with or without ‘ChristmasEve’ was preferred in DIVA 4. It seemed likea simple enough solution at first, but in tal-king with system users it became apparentthat some of the required information only
became available quite late. Normallytransport authorities announce their sche-dules just before Christmas. Checking a boxis simple; changing an operating day in thedatabase is much more involved. So toresolve this issue, a function was created inDIVA 4 to simultaneously initiate a changeof operating day for a route list. All subse-quent functions are made to be consistent. The database is viewed as a benefit for allsystem users. Performance losses regardingthe file system solution are compensatedthrough corresponding procedures andparallel editing.
Three User Interfaces
The one thing all DIVA 4 functions have incommon is the database. The other is newand existing interfaces.
The most up-to-date interface is DIVA Web.The aim is to have the greatest amount offunctionality occur over a browser inter-face. Currently, browser technology is pos-sible for timetable management, commondata management, all presentations andmap displays. The browser interface alreadycommands network management for aut-horities and is part of ongoing develop-ment.
Browser technology is not yet fast enoughfor intensive editing of schedules duringthe peak times of timetable change. Forthis reason, DIVA 4 has enabled manage-ment in multiple windows for the DIVASchedule module using a .Net interface.DIVA Schedule is currently the main work-horse of the timetable department.
For operational applications like the Gra-phic Schedule and Duty Schedule and forthe management of geography data, DIVAhas modules Vehicle Schedule, DIVA Dutyand DIVA Geo. These are the known Wind-ows interfaces that have received a newdatabase substructure.
Standards
DIVA 4 supports all common standards, likethe VDV in Germany, TransExchange in theUK or the new EU standard NeTEx (Networkand Timetable Exchange, see mdv news, 2,2010). Supporting a standard means thatthe DIVA 4 data structure is able to collectthe contents of these standards and thatthere are corresponding interfaces to readand write them.

Migration
A customer like the VVS in Stuttgart thathas had DIVA for more than 25 years natu-rally uses every function available to thesystem. Even when programs are notexhaustively tested, they get refined in col-laboration with users. This was a main taskfor the last few years and customer andsupplier were pleased to be able to deliverall products by the end of November.
Timetable Management
With DIVA 4, the number of modules wasdrastically reduced. Instead of having aplethora of individual programs in DIVA 3for stop management, common datamanagement, operating days, timetablemanagement, book pages, stop timetables, the EFA conversion, etc., DIVA 4 uses a com-mon web interface called DIVA Web. Usingthe DIVA Web layout as a browser applica-tion, data can be accessed over the internetregardless of server location. The user inter-faces were standardized with functionsbeing grouped in overview menus. In addition to DIVA Web, DIVA Schedule isalso used as a client program to managetimetables. This rich client includes compo-site route management and connectionmanagement for planned connections.DIVA Schedule also provides the option toplan a simpler vehicle schedule. ‘VehicleSchedule Light’ supplies consistency teststo check the data for the correspondinggeneral requirements. In this way, trips ofmultiple routes which have been combinedinto a route group can be planned intoblocks. The finished blocks are subse-quently exported at VVS (AFAB interface)for third-party ticket machines.
Book Pages and Timetables
DIVA4 utilizes DIVA Publisher as a centralelement for the creation of print media. This module is where all types of printmedia are compiled, managed and printed.A current application at the VVS is the time-table book for the Stuttgart Region. Time-table books include the directories ofroutes and stops as well as operators andpoints of sale. The directory contents areautomatically compiled from existing itemswhen the folder is created (a folder is a col-lection of print products, e.g. a timetablebook). But for the stop index, a new tech-nology is in use: the map squares of stopsare automatically accessed based on theircoordinates. This makes manual data entryof map coordinates unnecessary. The con-version of the coordinate matrix has alsobecome simpler.
The directories are followed by the bookpages of the routes. Even items for adverti-sement and empty pages can be added asrequired. Multiple routes can be groupedtogether. Property columns can be dis-played in the publisher view, which providean overview of information of the items ata glance. The following screenshot showsmap items for a timetable book (see figure1).
Another ‘book page’ type application is themini timetable at the VVS. More detailabout this app can be found in the ‘maps’section below. This kind of timetable iswhere book pages are combined with acover item and a route option map. Themini timetables are actually folding mapsthat passengers can take with them.
There are several types of stop timetablesthat are in use by the VVS. The creation ofprint products is done with the same lay-outs used in DIVA 3. The outputs have notchanged from DIVA 3 to DIVA 4. In this waythe CBS multi-stop timetables, the regularstop timetables and the fare tables haveremained identical to their previous versi-ons (see figure 2)

Maps
One of the development goals of DIVA 4 wasto fully integrate geography into the system, thus doing away with a strict division bet-ween managing timetable data and referen-cing geographic data. With the old barrierbroken down, many functions that had to bedone in a separate module in a particularsequence can now be accomplished directlyon the DIVA-Web map. For example, creatinga new stop or georeferencing a route is amuch more convenient process. The VVS hasbeen using the DIVA system for passengerinformation to create geographic networkroute maps in various scales since the time-table change in 2004/2005.
Managing the respective definitions andcreating PDF files has been integrated intoDIVA-Web. This year printing companies havebeen supplied with PDF files produced byDIVA4.
The large format network route maps are thestars of the DIVA map products. In the past,
every route had to be drawn by hand on ageographical map – a luxury that could onlybe afforded once a year. Now it can beupdated on any day at any time with a clickof the mouse using the DIVA Map Server (seefigure 3).
The PDF files of the route option maps can besent to print unaltered. Manual editing is notrequired (see figure 4).
The functionality “route option map” hasbeen markedly improved and can be bothintegrated into the EFA system for passengerinformation and used for scheduling purpo-ses. Using the Map Requester assistant pro-gram, multiple routes can be selected anddisplayed on a common map. For each route, one can select whether it should affect themap section or whether only the so-calledbackground route should be displayed.
In order to integrate route option maps intothe route hierarchy of DIVA Web, one can nowsuccessively generate either individual routeoptions or all route options at the same time(see figure 5).
A lesser known application of the routeoption maps is the so-called Mini Timetable. It combines geographic route options andtabular timetable information in a handy for-mat, which is usually distributed foldedtogether.
The management of these mini timetableshas been fully integrated into DIVA-Web (seefigures 6 and 7).

EFA 10
In using DIVA4, the VVS also committed toswitching from EFA9 to EFA10. Due to themore efficient data supply, more efficientintegration of real-time data throughincremental conversion in DIVA4 and moreefficient processing of real-time data byEFA10 the switch to EFA10 was desired andimplemented.
Data supply from DIVA4 to EFA10 has beenmade more convenient. In the past, datasupply occurred in separate, individual pro-cesses. DIVA4 uses scripts in DIVAWeb tomake the supply of data to EFA10 simpler(see figure 8).
The conversion is essentially performedusing 3 scripts:- Copy network version- Conversion- Export network version
By copying a network version, a databasethat is intended for release to EFA is trans-ferred to another, separate network ver-sion. On the basis of this procedure, data isprepared for conversion for use in EFA10.Network versions can also be exported sothat the data is available for use in externalsystems. All three procedures can be dis-played and analyzed in the DMS (DataManagement System) (see figure 9).
Additional process steps have been integra-ted into the script for EFA Conversion, twoof which are data preparation for the EFALocation Server and generation of eleva-tion data. The script can be upgraded andcustomized. When the process is run, alldata required for data supply to EFA aregenerated.
A very important functionality at the VVS isthe use of real-time. One of the big advan-tages of DIVA4 and EFA10 is the ability toquickly integrate day-specific timetabledata from AVM systems to EFA. Completeconversion is no longer required for thisprocess. Instead, the day-specific data areintegrated into an intermediate formatfrom which the EFA10 data are subse-quently compiled. At the VVS there are now3 connected AVM systems:- DB (Deutsche Bahn or German Rail)- AVM-Light (3 transport authorities Dan-
nenmann, Kappus and OVR-WRG) - SSB (Stuttgarter Straßenbahn or Tram)
The DB data of the VVS already contain thetrip IDs to determine delay messages. Day-specific data with trip IDs are received bythe SSB and AVM Light and subsequentlyintegrated to the EFA10 system. The DMS isused to view and analyze these processes(see figure 10).
The integration of day-specific data and theprocessing of EFA10 data only take a few
8 mdv news II/2011
minutes and are then available for the jour-ney planner. The system has been structu-red so that additional AVM systems can beintegrated with relative ease.
Another salient functionality at the VVS isproduct presentation, which can be acces-sed using EFA10. The presentation productsare separate from the EFA systems at theVVS. There are two servers allocated for thepresentations where requests are proces-sed by the load balancer. The process togenerate stop timetables, book pages, stoparea maps and route option maps work wit-hout a DIVA4 database. The Map Server(responsible for route options and stoparea maps) retrieves the required informa-tion from EFA10 data and the presentationmanager (responsible for stop timetablesand book pages) works with serialized data.
EFA10 provides the same functionality asEFA9, but is divided into several processcomponents in order to enable better sca-lability for the entire system. Process com-ponents that were added with EFA10 wereoriginally part of the EFA Location Server(the Location Server is the EFA searchengine for origin and destination regard-less of form, stop, address, POIs etc.). In themeantime, they have been relegated moreand more to backend processes for EFA10.Of note is the EFA PT Kernel split into a pro-cess that only calculates public transportroutes and the EFA Presentation Handler, which is responsible for timetable presen-tation. In addition, the EFA IT Kernel wasalso split into a routing process and a GISprocess. Customization, which used to be apart of the EFA Controller, is now its ownweb service. The architecture at the VVS canbe differentiated between http-processesand backend processes (see figures 11 and12).
Outlook
The introduction of DIVA 4 at the VVS was amilestone in the development of DIVA 4. Itwas a large and often difficult, but neces-sary task. The next step is to integrateimprovements to performance and usabi-lity into the next version. But the door isnow open to further develop the system toreap the benefits of the new platform. Newtopics are timetable management, especi-ally in collaboration with the StuttgartTram, who is currently transitioning to DIVA4. One big remaining topic is the use ofmulti-tenancy so that other transport aut-horities that work with the VVS can be inte-grated.

mdv news II/2011 - 9
In order to continually improve performanceand have it be a part of future releases mdvrequires quality feedback from its users. Mr.Tor-lach and Mr. Kappler, VVS, agreed to be inter-viewed about DIVA 4.
Mr .Kappler, the VVS has now been workingproductively in DIVA 4 for about 4 months. What was different about this timetablechange (2011/2012) as opposed to previousyears?
Mr. Kappler:Our first tests with DIVA 4started back in 2009. Ear-lier this year, we created aproject timetable withmdv and tested DIVA 4 tosee how it met our requi-rements. The issues that
emerged could be dealt with at an early stage. However a few cases first arose in productive ope-ration, so if something did not work properly, weneeded to have a quick fix. IT made the timetablechange 2011/12 exciting and intensive and requi-red a high level of stamina from all parties invol-ved.
Mr.Torlach, the implementation of DIVA 4 wasalso linked to the transition to EFA10. To whatextent can one speak of a paradigm shift withregard to EFA10?
Mr. Torlach: With theintroduction of EFA10,the central EFA control file“Lnrlit” was replaced. The“Lnrlit” served as a kind ofwhite list for EFA routes. The route versions’ inten-ded uses replace thefunction of the Lnrlit in
DIVA 4. This results in a transition to decentralroute management, which can be done by a time-table scheduler. Particularly in the transitionperiod before the timetable change, work wasdone carefully using two timetable projects toensure integrity in EFA. In addition, it was important to quickly generatethe EFA presentation products, stop timetablesand book pages, using the new serialization tech-nique. The process of “serialization” is a pre-calcu-lation of timetable data for EFA into a binary dataformat. This procedure had to be integrated intothe regular EFA data release.
Changing from an existing system with expe-rienced personnel to a new and comprehensi-vely revised software generation poses manychallenges. How did you adjust to the systembeing changed?
Mr. Kappler:At the beginning of 2011, the decision was madeto switch to DIVA 4, this at one of the first largetransport authorities, that also uses the full rangeof functionality of the classic DIVA data model. Atfirst we agreed to start an intensive DIVA Scheduleand DIVAWeb training program. As a result, allpersonnel were able to acquire the necessaryknow-how.
DIVA3 has matured to become a stable, conve-nient and fast module. The change to a comple-tely new system with all of its up and downs hasnot been the easiest of decisions, mainly becausewe would like to see improvement to the speedand ergonomics of DIVA 4.
Mr. Torlach:The changes are more minor for GIS and cartogra-phy. The user interfaces in DIVAGeo have largelyremained the same, however there have been afew surprises in practical usage, for instance whendisplaying stop points on map products. In thisway, improvements could be made in very diffe-rent parts of the DIVA 4 System using a map dis-play.
mdv and the VVS have been working withintensive collaboration the past half year. Thegoal was to implement the entire range of ser-vices, which DIVA3 controlled, for DIVA 4. Nowwe would like to concentrate on the strengthsand opportunities that DIVA 4 has to offer. Thefirst working group for DIVA 4 will be in Febru-ary, which the VVS extends an invitation. Thecoordination of both the divergent and com-mon interests of our customers will play alarge role in the group. What expectationsand goals does the VVS have in this workinggroup?
Mr. Kappler:First of all, we would like to take this opportunityto thank the mdv support team and developers, with which we have close collaboration. mdvemployees have been extremely helpful whendealing with known errors or in putting worka-rounds in place for the more exceptional cases.Regular status talks have also been helpful, espe-cially in the “critical phase” in which Dr. Mentz alsotook part. We would also like to extend our grati-tude to him for his involvement. We proposed the DIVA 4 working group a whileback and are pleased that it has now been crea-ted. We are looking forward to sharing our expe-riences with other system users, which will inte-grate the wishes and requirements of users intothe further development of the system, similar tothe EFA working group.
The VVS is using a wide range of services in theDIVA 4 system. There is somewhat of a tradi-tion of employees becoming engaged in thedevelopment of the system by submittinginnovative proposals. A good example fromthe current DIVA 4 implementation is the over-view of route version validities, which wasdeveloped and implemented based on theirsuggestions. It is important to have a say inthe requirements of our customers. DIVA 4 is asystem that will be under constant develop-ment. Which development direction is parti-cularly interesting to you?
Mr. Kappler:We would like to continue to enjoy close collabo-ration regarding product development. Challen-ges and new requirements usually arise duringproduction and then must be resolved as quicklyas possible. For future releases, we would like tosee faster workflows and improvements to theergonomics of the system. With Release 4.1.7, weplan to start productively using modules VehicleSchedule and Operational Statistics.
Mr. Torlach:With DIVA 4 and EFA10 we now have products inuse that are being dynamically developed. Weexpect to be able to give technically advanced, up-to-the-minute responses to the changingdemands in timetable management and passen-ger information. The VVS would like to begin using the Web FeatureService (WFS) as soon as possible. In doing so, theoperators and partners of our association willhave access to selected data.
Mr. Kappler and Mr. Torlach, thank you foryour time.
insight into the internal processing. Plannedtimetable data can be loaded in VDV 452 andTransXchange formats or directly from EFA datainto the AVM. Other data for which there is nostandardized exchange format, like vehicle anddriver lists, can either be entered in the AVM orimported as CSV files. When in use, the proces-ses to determine logical vehicle position andforecasts can be displayed through the admi-nistration interface both in graphic and tabularform.
AVM Light is currently in testing with Stadt-werke Eberbach vehicles equipped with mdvsoftware. The testing phase is planned to suc-cessfully end in December.
Integration of on-board third-party devices intothe AVM is still ongoing, particularly by themanufacturer of on-board devices to bring theinterfaces up to a common standard. As soonas there is something new to report we will besure to tell you in a future issue of mdv news.
Vehicle Scheduling Light
Vehicle scheduling in DIVA is nothing new; ithas been a part of previous versions since theintroduction of the operational data model. InDIVA 3 and DIVA 4, classic vehicle schedulingwas done in the graphic schedule, a powerfultool that supports schedulers when planningvehicle blocks. For smaller operators with bet-ween one and twenty buses, vehicle schedulingmay not even be required to this degree. Theirblocks are often so simple that they can bemanaged in normal office software like Excel ormay be set by the contractor themselves. In thiscase the existing blocks, which are not inmachine readable format, have to be enteredinto DIVA in a simple format and transferred tothe AVM system. Technically this procedurecould be done in the graphic schedule module, but doing so would be like hunting sparrowswith a canon. To avoid overkill, we have deve-loped an extension in DIVA Schedule that dealswith this frequently occurring situation. Usingdrag and drop, trips can be assigned to blocksfrom route group containers (see figure 1).
Because the day types of the authority routesoften differ from the vehicle schedule daytypes, meaning that there is a timetable forMon-Fri, but different shift schedules for eachday, DIVA 4 enables a route group to be assig-ned to several day types within the block. So foreach block day type, independent blocks canbe combined from one and the same timetablein DIVA Schedule. In this way DIVA Schedulesupports the scheduling process with diverseediting functions like the ability to copy a blockto another day type.
Also missing from most authority data are theoperational trips or “empty trips”, like a bus tripwithout passengers from the end of one pro-

Project
Earlier this year the Rhein-Neckar transport aut-hority announced an international request forproposal for the creation of a regional AVM. Therequirement was a client-capable AVM, whichwould allow for the participation of multiplesmall to mid-sized bus companies in the VRNregion. Also salient to the project was the gene-ration of real-time information for the journeyplanner and connection guarantees, the latterof which needed to work with both AVM inter-nally and AVM externally (with third-party AVMsystems).
Because the existing vehicle equipment variesgreatly from operator to operator, from thenon-existent to modern AVM-capable ticketprinters, the AVM system required by the VRNhad to be quite flexible. The AVM system wouldneed to both communicate with diverse exis-ting systems and also provide vehicle equip-ment, if necessary.
The real-time information collected by the AVMwould then flow via the VRN data platform (stillin planning) to the journey planner and also tothird-parties to guarantee connections andprovide passenger information to stations.
Another requirement first became apparentduring the specification phase in collaborationwith future AVM clients. The proposal was foran AVM that would work with block informa-tion for the operator and that would calculatereal-time information. As can be expected, smaller clients often do not have their data inelectronic form, or it is in a form that cannot beread over a standardized interface.
As a consequence, a fast and convenient wayhad to be developed to collect the block infor-mation of smaller clients for use in the AVM sys-tem.
AVM Light
mdv entered the request for proposal with theAVM that was described in the last issue of mdvnews and was successful. After the specificationphase in spring, development hit full strideduring the summer. In contrast to the first ver-sion that was installed in the Vogtland Region,a number of enhancements and improvementswere included in the newer version. While thefirst version of the AVM was still partly suppliedby partners, the second version was developedsolely at mdv.
As described above, one of the requirements forthe VRN AVM was the participation of multipletransport authorities. For this reason, the AVMwas developed to become a client-capable sys-tem. It is now possible to have an instance ofthe background system simultaneously used bydifferent operators without them being able tosee each other’s data. Using rights manage-ment, the functions and data accessible to eachuser can be separately defined. Functions rightsare set similarly to the DIVA 4 roles, with eachsystem function defined for user’s ability toread, write and delete. Also parallel to DIVA 4,data rights are defined in groups where rightsadministrators can determine, up to the level ofoperating branch, which data can be read. Auser can be assigned to one or more roles andgroups. This provides the operator with the fle-xibility needed to depict the range of constel-lations that happen in the real world.
The second major innovation is the completelyrefashioned driver terminal. While the Vogtlandversion still had a platform-independentbrowser application, the new driver terminal isan Android-based app. In this way platform-independency was traded for a solution to afew issues that are caused by a browser. At thesame time, a few functions were first possiblebecause of app technology, which could not beimplemented in a pure browser application.Use in Vogtland has shown that network cove-rage in parts of the countryside does not reachthe lowest standard called “EDGE”. A purebrowser application would obviously not bepossible in places with no network, and driverscould not sign on to a new trip at the end of thefirst. In this type of situation, an app is muchmore tolerant. Even when the app cannotdirectly transfer the sign on data, it can still savethe information and then send it in the back-ground as soon as reception is available again. One example of a new function made possiblewith the app is access to the telephone infra-structure, where acoustic signals can be sent. Inthe future, it will be possible to access USB- andBluetooth interfaces on third-party devices liketicket machines or vehicle displays.
An innovation that is invisible to control centerstaff and drivers is the powerful administrationenvironment. This allows AVM operators theability to manage data in the AVM and have

ductive trip to the start of another. These typesof trips are required in AVM for two reasons:firstly, to determine the location of the vehiclefor positioning purposes all along its route andsecondly, more importantly for users, to accu-rately calculate the consequences of delays onsubsequent trips. Empty trips can be enteredsimilarly to productive trips. IDs and intendeduse can be used to indicate that empty trips arenot to be displayed in print products and jour-ney planner.
Summary and Outlook
As a result of developing an independent AVMsystem, mdv is able to provide the entire supplychain of real-time passenger information. Thisstretches from data collection in vehicles to thedisplay of forecasts in the internet or on mobiledevices. The benefits for customers are quiteclear: the complex and cumbersome interfaceadjustments between separate suppliers areavoided for real-time projects. So for regularoperations there is only one contact for theentire system. Finally, customers also savethrough synergy effects between the individualsoftware components in development andtheir support.
mdv AVM is an upgradable and customizableproduct. The approach of using off-the-shelfsmart phone technology helps ensure that con-tinued development in the area will benefitfrom the lower costs for vehicles and equip-ment. USB and Bluetooth interfaces open thedoor to the enhancement of a full range offunctions coupled with other on-board devices.

DIVA system users met for the 49th usergroup in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Sunshine and strong winds greeted the 79 par-ticipants from Germany, Austria and Switzer-land at the 49th user group in the ATLANTCHotel Sail City.
The venue provided a professional backgroundfor this ‘operations’ user group, with its attachedconference center wonderfully located near the‘Hafenwelten’ directly at the Weser Delta.
After arriving on Wednesday, participants metat the get-together on the boat restaurant‘Seute Deern’ to eat fish specialties, drink localbeer from the Bremen breweries and getacquainted (or reacquainted) with one another.
The Beck's ship, the ‘Alexander von Humboldt’,sailed past the conference center window thenext day, adding to the welcome given by Mr.Robert Haase, the managing director of Bre-merhaven AG. Mr. Haase also gave interestinginsights into the structural changes in the cityof Bremerhaven.
The main focus of this user group was operatio-nal DIVA 4. Dr. Mentz spoke in detail about therelease planning, gave a peak into the ‘innerworkings’ of DIVA 4 development and explai-ned the development and test environments aswell as the strategies at mdv.
In subsequent talks, innovations in DIVA 4 werepresented in detail. Every aspect of operationalplanning from network planning to deploy-ment was illuminated. Garnering particularinterest were the topics of AVM Light and‘simple’ vehicle scheduling with DIVA 4. Twohighlights of this series of talks were the livedemonstrations of the control center at the VRNand insight into the deployment work in AbuDhabi.
Presentations were also made about DIVAPublisher and EFA 10, giving participants thelatest developments regarding mdv passengerinformation products and newest version ofEFA.
The final group of talks addressed the data plat-form (DDIP) and work with Oracle as a databasesystem.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Sowhen participants took a tour through the Bre-merhaven Climate House, they joined an exci-ting journey along the eighth longitude. The 90minute trip started in Bremerhaven and ledover Switzerland, through the desert and rain-forest, all the way around the globe so that par-ticipants could feel the effects of changing cli-mates first-hand.
A magnificent dinner in the captain‘s lounge ofthe Atlantic Hotel enriched the experience andthe successful conference was topped off by aspectacular view of the port.
We look forward to the 50th user group inMunich.

Stuttgart Tram Strike
Perplexed and frustrated passengers at busstops and increased, traffic-causing individualtransport are the telltale signs for an event thatupsets public transport schedules. For EFA,which normally works in the background, suchan event represents an opportunity to showwhat it can do.
On Tuesday 25 October 2011, the Stuttgartnewspaper wrote: Strike will paralyze Stuttgart on Friday Stuttgart - Taxi, bike or scooter: one hundredthousand Stuttgart commuters have to get crea-tive if they want to get to work on Friday. This isbecause Union Verdi will go on strike so thatthousands of buses and rail will not be used forpublic transport in Stuttgart, thus paralyzing thecity.
EFA to the rescue
The VVS (Stuttgart Transit and Tariff Associa-tion) entered every incident in the ICS (IncidentCapturing System) (Figure 1) and informed itscustomers through every channel:
- The central display at stop “Feuersee”(Figure 2)
- The departure board at “Herderplatz”(Figure 3)
- Information sent to subscribers via emailand SMS (Figure 4)
EFA provides alternatives
At least parts of journeys can be made with lon-ger walks and the suburban rail (s. Abb. 5) EFAeven calculates and provides journeys withcycle legs.
Conclusion
Even during a strike, EFA,aided by a well-mana-ged CMS, showed onceagain that it is able tominimize the inconveni-ences of a major eventfor passengers of publictransport systems.

Network Map and Route Option Maps at the VMS Transport Authority of Middle Saxony
In the network map, the lines that lead outof the transport authority are displayed
with an arrowand directionlabel. Becausethe direction ofthe arrow cannotbe indicatedusing links, theyhave to be defi-ned by a bracketin a point objectin the GIS (seefigure 6).
There are many optimization functions tolabel destination stops in DIVA programs,
stop labelingspecially for net-work maps, street labels, display of com-bination sym-bols and routedisplacement ofdifferent meansof transport (seefigure 7).
Only specific stops can be labeled in thenetwork maps. The display sequence of
destination stopboxes at stopscan be set hie-rarchically accor-ding to means oftransport. Thelabeling of desti-nation stops inrelation to desti-nation stopboxes can alsobe customized(see figure 8).
The boxes at rail stati-ons are dynamic, whichmeans that they turn inthe direction of the linkof the rail line withoutdisplaying the links. Ins-tead, the rail lines aredisplayed from the GIS(see figure 9).
that the public transport appears in theforeground.
The product with the largest area is thetransport authority’s route network map. This makes both the map and the localityindex important. There is also a grid overthe map that makes it easier to find indivi-dual localities (see figure 1, page 15).
In addition to the network map, 23 routenetwork maps were printed for the largercities as a supplement to the timetablebooks (see figure 2, S.15). Every map canalso be accessed via www.vms.de -> VMStimetable -> network maps (see figure 3,page 15).
The VMS required a series of enhance-ments that will be described in detailbelow:
A specialty of the network map is theoption to display fare zones. By means ofan intelligent, automatic coloring proce-dure, settings can be made so thatneighboring areas do not receive the samecolor. In addition, overlapping fare zones
are shadedwith bothcolors of therespectivezones. Theappearance ofthe shadingcan be custo-mized accor-ding to widthand angle (seefigure 4).
The network map has a zoom frame withcity fare zones which indicate that thereare route network maps in larger scales forspecific areas of the city. Stops are notlabeled inside the zoom frame (see figure 5).

Over the past few years, the creation ofcartography from GIS data (GeographicInformation System Data) has becomemore important at transport authoritiesand companies. The first article about ‘VVScartography directly from DIVA’ appearedin mdv news I/2005.
A number of transport authorities useDIVA modules Map Server and MapRequester to generate route networkmaps, city map sections and route optionmaps. Another module, the Map Tiler, cal-culates tiles to be able to display inter-active maps in various zoom levels. Allthree were used for DIVA 3 and have hadtheir technology transferred one-to-one toDIVA 4.
".... manually creating high-quality informa-tion media has largely been replaced byautomatic processes. The result not onlysaves time and energy but also provides theability to have up-to-date information byintegrating these products into the journeyplanner." (quote from mdv news I/2005, arti-cle "VVS cartography directly from DIVA, Mr.Torlach)
The path from updated GIS (DIVA Geo) andDIVA data to a generated map goes fromdetermining the sections of the areas inDIVAGeo to configuring the many parame-ters of the Map Server. These parametersenable area-, route-, and point objects tobe displayed on a map according to meansof transport using character sets andstops, which include links of routes.
The VMS set the goal to be able to gene-rate both route network maps a networkmap using DIVA. In doing so they hoped tosave costs and generate up-to-date mapsfor timetable books as well as fordownload from the internet.
At first, the GIS data was enhanced toinclude fare zone areas, zoom frames, andlocality names for the route network maps,POIs (points of interest) and a few otherobjects.
Afterwards comprehensive parametriza-tion occurred for all GIS objects, stops andlinks. Now there are more than 50,000parameter settings, all of which were firsttested in small sections and the used onthe entire map. The advantage of havingone’s own maps in comparison to ‘drawing’on exiting maps is that the contents canbe precisely displayed in accordance withthe message of the map, which is publictransport on the background of settle-ment structures. The symbols and colors ofthe background map can be selected so

Street indexes of a route network map canbe output in a text file. In this way anentire street index can also be printed.
Street labels have been optimized so thateven abbreviati-ons of theirnames are stillrecognizable andthe labels areoptimally placed(with line break, over, in themiddle of andunder the street)(see figure 10).
If the street name cannot be placed on themap, then street name blocks are dis-played, which can also be configured (seefigure 11).
All in all there has been a long line of closecollaboration between the VMS and mdvuntil all details were resolved to the stan-dards set by the VMS. The VMS was happywhen the maps went to print.
