New time and location beginning Sept 15 (Sun) 4:30 pm

in the Chapel Family Rm

Beginning on Sept 15 (Sun), a Liturgy for Christian Healing

will be offered by prayer ministers each Sunday afternoon at

4:30 pm in the Chapel Family Room prior to our 5 pm Chapel

service. Prayer ministers will be available for personal prayer

and laying on of hands. Prayer ministers who wish to serve,

CONTEMPLATIVE WORSHIPA MINISTRY OFTAIZÉ PRAYER

Sept 22, Nov 10, Jan 5 (Sun) 5 pm in the Church

Entersect presents a service that quiets the mind, opens the

heart, and feeds the soul presented by our children and youth

choirs. Using simple melody and words, a basic reality of faith

is expressed. Our January 5 service is a special, candlelight

REMEMBERING OUR SAINTS

Nov 3 (Sun) 6 pm in the Church

We remember our loved ones no longer with us with Even-

song, including the reading of the Necrology (a list of those

departed from our parish family since All Saints’ 2018). A

reception follows in Sumners Hall, with a wall of remembrance

featuring submitted pictures of the departed. Presented by

FALL LIFE GROUPS

Life groups are a place to connect, study, and grow together.

Life groups meet at SJD on Wednesday nights, and at other

The Disciple’s Way: week of Oct 2 – week of Nov 13

Do you consider yourself a disciple of Jesus? Are you ready to

explore what that means? This engaging six-week study will

challenge you with Jesus’ own words about what it truly means

to follow him through the travel narrative of Luke’s Gospel.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

Oct 6 (Sun) 3:30 – 4:30 pm in the Julia Garden

All who love animals, along with their pets and their human

friends, are invited to this service (note: all furry friends must

be on leashes or in proper containers). Priests will be available

FALL CELEBRATION DINNER

& BELLS ON THE BOULEVARD

Oct 30 (Wed) 6 – 8 pm in the Hall Life Center

Our parish has much to celebrate! Please join us as we welcome

back Catherine and Gary Lillibridge, learn about how we lived

out our thanks and generosity in 2019, and hear about our plans

for 2020. This brief program will culminate in a post-dinner

“Bells on the Boulevard” concert by renowned carillonneur,

Carol Lens, who will delight us with a musical recital on our

newly refurbished carillon bells. Menu and prices forthcoming.

Tikaa. She will speak about her journey as a mom gone social

media infl uencer, lifestyle guru on amazon.com and dish designer

ADVENT WREATH MAKING

Dec 1 (Sun) 10 – 11 am in Sumners Hall

All are invited to make Advent wreaths together in lieu of

CHRISTMAS ON THE BOULEVARD

Dec 14 (Sat) 4 pm - 7:30 pm

Christmas on the Boulevard returns as part of St. John the Divine’s 80th

Birthday Celebration Weekend! Entersect presents this complimentary,

classic Christmas celebration with your church family. Contact Steven

4 pm Live Nativity: Experience the mystery of that Holy Night

with a family-friendly live nativity on the front lawn with animals.

5 pm Gala Concert: Join the SJD Chorale and ROCO Musicians

along with the SJD Youth Choristers and the anticipated return

of the Three Sopranos for a concert of seasonal favorites. A

festive post-concert celebration reception follows in Sumners

Hall with refreshments and live jazz.

The concert will be live streamed to the Hall Life Center where

there will be room for children to move and a supervised

ROCO CONCERTS

Sep 28 & Nov 16 (Sat) 5 pm

ROCO is a dynamic and innovative professional chamber music

ensemble in residence that fl exes from 1 to 40 players from all

over the US and Canada, with guest artists from around the

world. Expanding the repertoire, ROCO has premiered over

75 commissions from living, American composers. Performing

intimate concerts in dozens of venues, ROCO’s musicians don’t

just give concerts – they challenge preconceptions, create

extraordinary experiences, and foster new relationships with

audiences through the language of music. ROCOrooters music

education and childcare is available during/after the concerts.

Welcoming all Mahjong players — experienced and new! For

those who want to learn how to play, we will have an instructor

available for 6-8 weeks of classes. Registration is necessary and

there is a small fee involved to sign up for classes. Experienced

WALKING THE MOURNER’S PATH

Oct 1 – Nov 19 (Tues) 3:30 – 5 pm

in the Church Ladies’ Lounge

Walking the Mourner’s Path provides the understanding of grief

to be both joy and sorrow associated with the loss of a loved

one in the context of a small group. There are eight weekly

workshops centered in prayer, acknowledging God’s healing

presence. Two facilitators, Norie Baldwin and Judy Thornton,

supported by clergy, the Rev. Louise Samuelson and the Rev.

Greg Buffone, lead the weekly gatherings. Cost/$50. Contact

Grief Support Group

Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one lay, caring ministry providing

high-quality, confi dential, Christ-centered care to people who

recruit in Oct/Nov for a training class for new caregivers to be

SEMINARIAN SUNDAY

Aug 25 (Sun)

The Special Outreach Fund of St. John the Divine funds the

St. John the Divine Episcopal Church Houston Scholarship

for Ordained Entrepreneurial Leadership. We welcome our

seminarian scholarship recipients William Boyles and Amanda

Bourne from Virginia Theological Seminary and Corrie Cabes

from Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. who will spend the

weekend getting a hands-on learning experience from our lay

leaders and clergy. They will also preach our Sunday sermons.

PARLOR PROGRAM: WHAT’S IN YOUR MEDICAL BINDER?

Sept 16 (Mon) 10 – 11:15 am in the Parlor

Sarah McMurray, a care manager with Artful Aging LLC, will

discuss “What’s in Your Medical Binder?” Too often we wait for

that “rainy day” to get our affairs in order. What does that really

mean and look like? As an elder care advocate and consultant,

Sarah will walk us through how best to organize our medical and

legal paperwork and give us reasons why to do this sooner rather

MINI-GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

Nursery (birth – age 2)

(Sun) 8:45 am – 12:30 pm in Rm 104

The Nursery Ministry welcomes all children and provides a warm

and loving childcare environment each Sunday. During the 9 &

11 am worship services, we provide childcare for children who

are in Kindergarten and younger. During 10 am Sunday school,

we provide childcare for children who are under the age of 2

by September 1 of the current school year. Please visit us at the

welcome area in front of the nursery, and we will be happy to

meet your family, check your child into our computerized check-

in system, and guide you to your child’s room.

Preschool (age 2 – PreK)

Preschoolers will gather together to laugh, sing, play, and

learn about the amazing God who created them with fabulous

Kindergarten and elementary kids meet in The Park … where

kids gather for fun, friends, and faith. Our classes are designed

environments (large group, small groups, and home) to

implement our strategy and connect kids to Jesus in a meaningful

way. Both the large group and small groups will be used for

continue these practices at home.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based ap-

proach to the spiritual formation of the young child, rooted

in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational

principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an “atrium”,

a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beauti-

ful materials designed specially for their use where they are

introduced to the Bible through liturgy, parables, contempla-

tive work, and prayers.

communion. However, they are still too young to understand.

Every year we offer a Preparation for Communion class to help

As eighth-grade students begin their year-long Sunday

confi rmation class, parents are invited to a four-week companion

Our four-week Preparing for Graduation class focuses on helping
