OLD PLAZA CHURCH 1869
HISTORY Originally settled in 1781 by settlers from Mexican
provinces. Mexico was still under Spanish
rule.
Mexico declared independence in 1821.
Became American city in 1847 when captured
during the Mexican-American War.
South Pacific Railroad line was completed in
1876, oil was discovered shortly after.
1910, Hollywood created. Generated much
revenue during the Great Depression.

During the WWII, soldiers sta-
tioned in LA did not approve of
the Mexican youth’s zoot suits.
After police offers pulled over
an African American driver, the
neighborhood began to get vio-
lent by throwing rocks at the
officers. Aprox 4,000 arrests, 40
Million in damages.
After four officers were
acquitted after being caught
on tape beating Rodney
king, African Americans and
Hispanics took to the streets,
looting and burning down
stores.
