Singleton McAllister Named “Lawyer With Influence”

OnBeingABlackLawyer.com, in conjunction with the Con-

gressional Black Caucus meeting last weekend, pub-

lished a guide to members of the CBC and staff as well

as a list of “Lawyers With Influence, “ - and included our

own Singleton McAllister on that list. Singleton has

been practicing government relations and public policy

law for more than 20 years and has served in numerous

positions within the U.S. House of Representatives, in-

cluding Associate Staff on the House Appropriations

Committee and as senior counsel to the House Budget

Committee. She was appointed by former President Clin-

ton as the general counsel to the United States Agency

Denise Hanna Appointed Chair of Locke Lord Diversity Committee

Locke Lord Strategies Partner Denise Hanna has been

named Chair of the Firm-wide Diversity Committee, a lead-

ership group that oversees Locke Lord’s ongoing diversity

initiative throughout its 11 U.S. cities, London and Hong

Kong. Hanna has more than two decades of experience in

ton as the general counsel to the United States Agency

for International Development. Ms. McAllister was also a

former chair of the National Women Business Center and

a past president of Women in Government Relations,

Inc. Singleton also served as a member of the Advisory

Board of the African Development Foundation for ten

Terri Brown-Edwards Elected President of Delaware State Bar Association

Theresa V. Brown-Edwards, a partner in the Bankruptcy

and Corporate Restructuring Group of Potter Anderson &

Corroon LLP, was elected President of the Delaware

State Bar Association effective July 1, 2012. She is the

first woman of color to be elected to this position. Terri

concentrates her practice on corporate reorganization and

has significant experience representing Chapter 11 debt-

ors and debtors-in-possession. She also focuses her at-

tention on the protection of creditors' rights, including the

representations of official creditors' committees, ad hoc

committees, lenders, landlords, equipment and aircraft

lessors, and trade creditors. Ms. Brown-Edwards has

been recognized by C hambers US A :A meric an’s L ead ing

L awyers forB u s ines s (2011and 2012)as a leading law-

yer in bankruptcy/restructuring and was also ranked in the

Gina Simms Joins Ober Kaler’s Government Investigations Group

Gina Simms has joined Ober Kaler’s Government Investi-gations and White Collar Defense Group. A former Assis-tant US Attorney, Ms. Simms has over 17 years of experi-ence in complex white collar and other criminal matters.Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Simms served as an AssistantUS Attorney in the US Attorney's Office for the District ofMaryland. While there, she was a Criminal Health CareFraud Coordinator who screened health care fraud casesand supervised all aspects of investigations. Ms. Simmsalso served as an Assistant US Attorney in the US Attor-ney's Office for the District of Columbia for four years. Dur-ing her tenure as a government attorney, Ms. Simms wasan Associate Independent Counsel as part of the teaminvestigating a former Secretary of Labor for campaignfinance-related violations. In addition to her litigation expe-rience, Ms. Simms recently served as an InvestigativeCounsel at the Department of the Interior's Bureau ofOcean Energy Management Regulation and Enforcement.As a member of the Investigations and Review Unit, shepursued allegations of wrongdoing by oil and gas compa-nies engaged in offshore oil production.

African American Managing Partners and General Counsel Meet

Last Sunday during the Congressional Black Caucus Weekend African AmericanGeneral Counsel and Managing Partners from across the country were hosted byGrace Speights, the Managing Partner of the Washington office of Morgan Lewis.Organized for the purpose of identifying ways General Counsel and Managing Part-ners may be of assistance to each other and to promote diversity, inclusion and busi-ness development for diverse attorneys, over 30 were in attendance. There was alsoan effort to raise the profile of African American Attorneys with legal publications likethe National Law Journal, the American Lawyer, and Best Lawyers, among others.John Page, the President of the National Bar Association and the General Counsel ofGolden State Foods and Steve Wright, the Managing Partner of the Boston office ofHolland & Knight, played a critical role in organizing the General Counsel who werein attendance. This effort was led by John Daniels, the Chairman of Quarles &Brady, and Ben Wilson, the Managing Principal of Beveridge & Diamond.

Assistant Attorney General, Maryland State Retirement & Pension System

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking applicants for an Assistant Attorney Gen-

eral vacancy at the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System. The position will

Equal Employment Opportunity Project Director

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs seeks a Direc-

tor for the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Project, one of the Committee’s oldest

and most active practice areas and has been counsel in a number of precedent-setting

employment discrimination cases. The EEO Project represents individuals and plaintiff

classes in a broad spectrum of litigation under federal, state and local non-

discrimination and family and medical leave laws. Responsibilities include managing a

large employment discrimination and family and medical leave litigation docket and oth-

er civil rights cases; managing extensive intake interviews and investigations; supervis-

ing a paralegal and visiting attorneys and fellows; coordinating work with other Commit-

tee project directors and pro bono counsel from cooperating law firms; developing cas-

es and setting Project priorities; representing the Project in policy discussions with

Register to be a Bone Marrow Donor

Nationwide, people of certain racial and ethnic backgrounds are unable to find compati-ble donors among those on the National Bone Marrow Registry due to a critical shortageof diverse volunteers. Patients and donors must have matching tissue types, and thesematches are most often found between people of the same racial and ethnic background.

Being tested and registering for the Registry involves a commitment to help with a mar-row donation in case of a match. The National Marrow Donor Program website has in-formation for those who are interested in learning more and potentially becoming a do-nor. Getting tested simply requires a swab of the inside of your mouth. There are a fewways you can be tested to become a donor:

1. You can register on the website below and NMDP will send you a kit to test your-self. The kit is free if you are between the ages of 18 and 44 but if you are between theages of 45 and 60, the cost is $100 because it requires special testing. If you are overthe age of 60, you cannot register to be a donor.

2. For those who are in the Philadelphia area, on October 10, 2012, NMDP will be hold-ing a bone marrow donor drive from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Down's Hall Auditorium, 5450Wissahickon Ave, Philadelphia , PA 19144. Note: this drive is only for people be-tween the ages of 18 and 44.
