WELCOME TO DIVINE MERCY CATHOLIC CHURCH
Divine Mercy Sunday (2nd Sunday of Easter)
April 7, 2013 ~ John 20:21
“Again, Jesus said: Peace be with You. As the Father has sent me,
so I send you.”
Message from Message from Message from Message from
Deacon Rick Morales Deacon Rick Morales Deacon Rick Morales Deacon Rick Morales O n this Second Sunday of Easter also known as Mercy Sunday, especially here at Divine Mercy Parish, we rejoice wholeheartedly in the tremendous Mercy that flows from the heart of our merciful Savior.
In our Gospel reading from the Gospel of John, Jesus comes to bring His never-ending mercy to His disciples who are locked behind closed doors out of fear. He shows them His hands and His side. Was this to show to them what they had only heard about his crucifixion, considering the fact that all but one of them had fled and hadn’t actually witnessed His suffering?
Rather than chastise them for having abandoned Him in His time of need, upon visiting them in the Upper Room, he extends to them His peace. Upon their rejoicing in Him, He then bestows on them the power to forgive sins, the Sacrament of Mercy, also known to us today as Reconciliation or Confession.
Jesus extended His mercy to Thomas after his oath that unless he saw the nail marks in His hands and put his finger in them and put his hand into His side he would not believe.
During Jesus’ time with His disciples, He told them that they would be hated just as He was in His life that they too would suffer at the hands of men. At His Ascension, He promised to be with us always until the end of the age.
We read today about how powerfully He was with the early Church as related in the Book of Acts.
Jesus’ promise is lived out in the life of the Apostle John in the reading that we hear today from the Book of Revelation. This was a period of persecution for the Church. John was not exempt from the hardship as he relates in saying that he shares in the distress, having been imprisoned on the Island of Patmos but also he joins in the sharing of the kingdom and the endurance we have in Jesus. Just as Jesus said, we would not be spared the cross but He would be with us along the way.
J esus spoke words of encouragement to His servant, Saint Faustina Kowalska when He showed Himself to her in the image that we have come to know as the Divine Mercy image in the 1930’s. Jesus related to St. Faustina His deep desire to pour out His mercy on His people if only they would repent of their sins. He told her that there is no sin that He would not forgive
if people would only come to Him and ask. In this day when so many have turned away from God He extends His never-ending mercy to each of us and lovingly calls us to Himself.
The rays coming forth from his heart in the image represent the blood and water that flowed from his heart on the Cross and also the saving waters of Baptism and the Divine Life that we receive in the Eucharist. Sacred Scripture tells us that Jesus taught that unless we believe and are baptized we cannot go to heaven (Mk 16:16) and unless we eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood we have no life in us. (John 6:53)
Jesus is always with us, encouraging us, inviting us into his Divine Life. This image that He’s given us for our time is yet another invitation by him for us to enter into the depth of his love for us.
Your mercy truly is endless and your treasury of compassion inexhaustible!
Jesus I Trust in Your Mercy and Love. Jesus I Trust in You.
St. Faustina, Apostle of Mercy and our Patron Saint, pray for us.

The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, 699)
D ivine Mercy Sunday is the Second Sunday of the Easter season. It was named by Blessed John Paul II at the canonization of St. Maria Faustina on April 30, 2000, and then officially decreed by the Vatican.
Divine Mercy Sunday can be seen as the convergence of all the mysteries and graces of Holy Week and Easter Week. It is like a multi-exposure photograph of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Week or we can think of it as a converging lens that focuses the light of the Risen Christ into a radiant beam of merciful love and grace for the whole world. In fact, Jesus revealed in various revelations to St. Faustina that it was His desire that we celebrate this special feast.
On that day the very depths of My tender Mercy are open.
I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon these souls who approach the Fount of My mercy (the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist).
The soul that will go to Confession (beforehand) and receive Holy Communion (on that day) shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.
On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened.
Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.
The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness.
It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter.
Our Lord revealed to St. Faustina His desire to literally flood us with His graces on that day. Just consider each of the promises and desires that He expressed about Mercy Sunday, which are recorded in the main passage of the Diary — passage 699 — about Mercy Sunday:

Food Distribution to the Poor on April 20, 2013
Divine Mercy Ministry to the Poor will be distributing food on Saturday, April 20th at 12:00 noon in the Narthex. If you know anyone in need of food, please let them know of the food distribution. To help us make sure that we have enough food for the needy that day, please help us with a cash or food donation to give to the poor on April 20th. Please provide your donation before April 17th to give us time to bag and sort the food donations. Remember Jesus said, “whatever
you do for the least among you; you did for me.” (Mt 25:31-46). Also, we are looking for new members to help with the ministry work to the poor. If you want to join the ministry or just help with food distributions only, please call James Ogbonna at (916) 384-5346. The next meeting of Angels of Mercy will take place on April 18th at 7:30 pm in room P9. Thank you in advance for your support.

Cellphones with cameras are a mixed blessing. Forget your camera? Pull out the cellphone and your toddler’s first step, friend’s goofy mishap, or fender-bender is captured for posterity. But cellphones are also being used in a sinister way -- to silently take pictures of unsuspecting children, adolescents and adults in compromising
positions and without their consent. Digital photos can be placed on the internet very quickly and distributed around the world. Be aware of any cellphone use in private areas such as the bathroom or where children are gathered. If you see someone using a cellphone in a way that appears suspicious, don’t be afraid to ask what he or she is doing or to alert someone in a position of authority about your concerns.
