Good and Faithful Servant

"Among our tasks as witnesses to the love of Christ is that of giving a voice to the cry of the poor."

Pope Francis, 6/14/13

As Catholics, the call to participate in political life is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do. In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation.

The U.S. Conference on Catholic Bishops (USCCB) website provides resources on understanding the Catholic position, based on Catholic Social Teachings, (CST) on many issues facing our country today. It is not the USCCB intent to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Their purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God's truth; the responsibility to make choices in political life rests with each individual in light of a properly formed conscience.

The St. Mary’s website will have a link to the USCCB Action Center (https://www.votervoice.net/USCCB/home) to view current action alerts and enable you to sign up so that you can contact your elected representatives to express your concerns and opinions on upcoming legislation. Also, please remember to pray for our elected officials and all those people affected by their work.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen! For eight days we have been celebrating Easter Day, and today we come to the Octave (eighth) Day. In the Jubilee Year 2000, Pope St. John Paul II named this Second Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday.

As we continue to celebrate this joy-filled Easter Season, join us this afternoon, Sunday, April 8, at 2:30pm in the church for a special violin concert. Maestro Matteo Fedeli returns to St. Mary’s to fill our church with the sweet sounds of a 1709 Pietro G. Guarneri violin, graciously on loan from a private collection. Maestro Fedeli will be accompanied on piano by Ms. Carol Cook of Aiken. This concert is free and open to the public, so bring your friends! This year, we have arranged to have the piano up front so that you will have the best possible view.

“So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplished at the hands of Paul that when handkerchiefs or aprons that touched his skin were applied to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them” Acts 19:11-12. In this passage showing that even handkerchiefs and aprons of St. Paul brought healing and freedom from evil spirits, we see the power of the relics of God’s holy ones, the Saints. We at St. Mary’s joyfully welcome two important relics of St. Anthony of Padua for veneration, accompanied by Fr. Bortolino Maistrello from Padua, where the Saint is buried. A statue of St. Anthony graces the narthex of our church, and our largest bell is named in his honor. Saint Anthony intercedes with those trying to find a job, housing, faith, love, hope, harmony within the family, good health, peace of mind, and mercy.

Prayer petitions with holy cards will be distributed by Friar Bortolino and volunteers to allow parishioners to write their petitions to the Saint. The writing of a prayer petition is a worldwide tradition. Father Bortolino will bring the petitions back to the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua and place them at the tomb of the Saint.

Veneration of the relics will be at the church on Thursday, April 12, from 4:00 – 8:00pm, with Holy Mass at 7:00pm. (Please note the 5:30pm Mass will be moved to 7pm in the church.) Welcome, St. Anthony!

Finally, the Easter season culminates with the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Our world is in desperate need of a New Evangelization – the revitalization of Christ’s disciples with a renewed sense of mission brought about through the Holy Spirit. You are invited to a 5-week Life in the Spirit Seminar, which will open us up to God’s love, enliven our friendship with Jesus, and help us better experience how enriching life in the Holy Spirit can be for those who are open to receive Him. Join us in Mother Teresa Hall, Friday evenings April 13 – May 11, 7:00-8:30pm. For more information or to register, contact Mary Ellen Jackson at [email protected] or 803-642-2676. Come, Holy Spirit!

Praying for you daily, Father Wilson

Judas Maccabaeus, an oratorio by Handel, while telling the

story of the Maccabean uprising in the second century BC, was

actually intended as a compliment to the Duke of Cumberland,

who had just returned victorious from the Battle of Culloden

(1746). This battle, as those of us with Scottish ancestry know,

was a slaughter of the Scottish forces trying to put Charles

Stuart back on the throne. It was also an impetus for many

Scots to leave Scotland. The most famous movement of this

oratorio is See, the Conqu’ring Hero Comes. Judas Maccabaeus,

however, has the underdogs winning and restoring Jewish

worship against overwhelming odds. (It was during this uprising

that the Jewish festival of Hanukah had its roots.) The melody

of See the Conqu’ring Hero Comes became immensely popular.

Beethoven wrote a series of variations on it. The Swiss Edmond

Budry wrote an Easter hymn text, À Toi la gloire, O Ressuscité,

which was translated into English as Thine Be the Glory. It has

only grown in popularity worldwide, being used in the

Netherlands for weddings, in Ireland also at Christmas, and in

Japan for school honors programs. A quick note about the title,

there is a difference between ‘Thine BE the Glory’, and ‘Thine IS

the Glory.’ BE is the imperative, demanding all glory be given to

God, a cry of zeal and victory, while IS simply makes a

declaratory statement.

Veneration 4 PM to 8 PM Mass at 7 PM

The Franciscan Friars from Padua, Italy, invite you to join them in welcoming Saint Anthony of Padua

to St. Mary Help o Christians Church. Saint Anthony will be visiting us in the form of two precious and first class relics from the Pontifical Basilica in Padua, Italy.

The relics will be accompanied by Fr. Bortolino Maistrello, a Franciscan Friar from Padua, where the Saint is buried. Father Mario Conte, editor of the Messenger of Saint Anthony, explains an important point about relics: “There is nothing superstitious about relics. The real meaning of a relic is love – they are a link of love between the person who venerates and the Saint.” Saint Anthony intercedes with those trying to find a job, housing, faith, love, hope, harmony within the family, good health, peace of mind, and mercy.

The Roundels of Saint Mary Help of Christians Church

Turris Eburnea - Tower of Ivory

Unlike the Tower of David which was built to store weapons for battle and serve as a fortress, this tower was built to be a thing of beauty and ornament. Mary’s purity and goodness are represented by a beautiful ivory tower. What adds to her beauty is her humility and willingness to follow God’s plan for her life. Love of Mary always leads us right to her Son. Tower of Ivory, pray for us.
