Understanding the Church YearSeason of Pentecost

The second half of the Church Year called “Pentecost” emphasizes the result of God’s work in our hearts through the Word – creating and sustaining faith in our hearts and producing good works in our lives. While the emphasis shifts, we never leave behind Christ and his work for us, which was the center of our attention during the first half of the Church Year.

THEME: SHARE YOUR SAVIOR BY SHARING THE WORD!

OPENING HYMN Glory Be to God the Father | 239 (v. 1-3)

INVOCATION*

M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you

CONFESSION†

M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

ABSOLUTION‡

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called

* Worship begins “in the name of” (invocation) the one true God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. At the very beginning of worship we are reminded of the words spoken in baptism where God puts his name on us. It is only because of God’s undeserved love for us that worship is even possible.† As we approach God in worship we are brutally honest about who we are, what we have done, and what we deserve from God. Instead of hiding our sin, we run to the only solution – God’s mercy in Christ. ‡ Since Jesus himself has promised to forgive all those who repent of their sins and told us to forgive the repentant, the declaration of forgiveness is as valid and certain as if Christ himself stood before us and declared our sins forgiven.

servant of Christ and by his command, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

RESPONSIVE SONG§ Glory Be to God the Father | 239( v. 4) Glory, blessing, praise eternal! Thus the choir of angels sings;Honor, riches, pow’r, dominion! Thus its praise creation brings.Glory, glory, Glory to the King of kings!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray.Almighty God, we thank you for planting in us the seed of your Word. By your Holy Spirit help us to receive it with joy and to bring forth fruits in faith and hope and love; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Word**

THE FIRST LESSON Amos 7:10-15Amos’ faithfulness to the Word was its own reward – he proclaimed the Truth; whether or not those who heard it would listen.

§ With a swift change of mood, in an outburst of joy and praise to the Holy Trinity our response lifts us from self to contemplation of the divine and from consciousness of human need to glorification of God’s majesty, power, and holiness. ** The public reading from Scripture can be traced back to the synagogue service (Luke 4:16-21). From Apostolic times the reading of carefully chosen lessons from the Apostles and Evangelists has been the central part of Christian worship.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words. 11 For this is what Amos is saying:

“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.’”12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out,

you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”

14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

VERSE OF THE DAY Deuteronomy 30:14M: Alleluia. The Word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. Alleluia.

THE EPISTLE LESSON 1 Timothy 3:1-7For those who serve as leaders in the church, Paul gives these qualifications. We pray that the Holy Spirit works faith in us all and that out of thankfulness to our Savior, we live godly lives as a witness to our Lord.

1 Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.

HYMN OF THE DAY Lord of the Living Harvest | 559

SERMON TEXT Matthew 10:1-10 1Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them

authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the

dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures.He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

6

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERING“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” - 2 Corinthians 9:7

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

†† In the Sacrament we prepare ourselves to receive Christ’s body and blood along with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. This gift received in faith assures us of God’s love, strengthens our faith, and empowers us for godly living.

8

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTIONM: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and

when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take and eat. This is my ✙ body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

9

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it all of you; this is my ✙ blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

LAMB OF GOD‡‡

DISTRIBUTION Guests: Living Savior practices member communion. We do this because the Bible teaches that not only do we receive Christ’s true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins in Holy Communion, but we are also confessing a oneness in the faith. For this reason, if you are not a member of Living Savior or the WELS, we want to give you a chance to learn what we believe and teach before we ask you to join us ‡‡ This beautiful song summarizes the redeeming work of Christ and prepares our hearts and minds for communion. It has been sung in the liturgy since about 700 AD.
