DIVISION A REPORT April 11, 2015
District 39 • Where Leaders Are Made
Vision: Division A – Where Practice Makes Perfect But We Don’t Have To Be Perfect to Practice!
Team Members:
Area 11 Governor: James Burke, ACS, ALB Area 12 Governor: Staci Nauman, CC, CL Area 13 Governor: Richard Ludke, CC Area 14 Governor: Tina Clinebell, ACB
Division A Chief Judge: Jeffrey Purtee, DTM
Club Visits: Area 11 Governor Jim Burke has completed his second round of official club visits and has submitted all of his area visit reports on his four clubs. He also installed the new officers for Sierra Sunrise on Feb 19th.
Area 13 Governor Richard Ludke reports that Blue Tahoe has a new club president, Slater Cahill. He also indicated that while Tahoe Toasted Nuts, the Hyatt closed club, appears to be “toast” and unlikely to revive there are efforts being made to establish the charter at another location in the Incline Village area. – Stay tuned.
Membership: Washoe Zephyrs, Let’s Talk Right, Tahoe Toasted Nuts, and American Valley report no membership renewals as of April 6th. Lyon Speaks Tonight reports only three membership renewals. Moonlighters reports seven renewals to date. Four of eighteen clubs in Division A may fold by October. Without adequate membership these clubs are unable to conduct productive meetings nor attract new members. The remaining thirteen clubs in the Division appear solid in terms of membership to sustain themselves for the next six months. American Valley is expected to remain vital and may just be slow getting dues in.
An idea has been floated to conduct a lend lease type program with struggling clubs where Toastmasters from other clubs in the Division will be “lent” to struggling clubs so that they can have productive meetings and attract new members. Ideal candidates are clubs with at least six members. In this way a club coach can get some much needed support to assist them with bringing these clubs up to Distinguished Club status. Between lending members to struggling clubs and more publicity and promotion, it is hoped that some struggling clubs return to charter strength in the coming year. These types of programs are unlikely to be successful with clubs that have less than six members.

DIVISION A REPORT April 11, 2015
District 39 • Where Leaders Are Made
Contests: All of the Area contests for Areas 11, 12, 13 & 14 have been successfully completed with the Division A contest scheduled for this Friday evening, 6:30 p.m. in Reno, NV on the UNR campus, Ansari Bldg AB106.
Chief Judge Judge Jeffrey Purtee has continued to update the March Madness bracket type speech contest schedule with the names of the winners. He has also provided judges to all those clubs who scheduled contests, as well as the Area and Division contest. Thank you Jeffrey.
Thank you to each Area Governor for hosting successful Area contests leading to this Fridays, Division A Contest.
DCP Stars: Three out of the four clubs in Area 11 have met the required goals to become distinguished clubs. Sierra Sunrise (6), Washoe Express (7), and University Toastmasters (6). American Valley has achieved (3) goals and is planning to have 5 goals by the end of the year.
In Area 12, 3 of 5 clubs have reached distinguished status, The Chamber Toastmasters club is leading the DCP pack with 7 goals obtained to date followed by Oasis and Silver Tongue with 5 goals each.
Area 14 has two qualified DCP clubs in Sierra Advanced Speakers with 7 goals achieved followed by Moonlighters with 6 goals achieved.
Challenges: Three of eighteen clubs in Division A are challenged by insufficient membership to conduct effective meetings. Two additional clubs are under eight members and on the endangered list. Efforts to attract, sign up and retain members is a high priority for these clubs and for many clubs in Division A. Division A and B could use some localized publicity regarding Toastmasters in our area. Suggestions or samples of previous media pieces would be appreciated.
Notable Accomplishments
Thanks to Russ Steele, PDG, each of the Area Governors, and the Division Chief Judge, all Division A sponsored club officer trainings were successfully completed. We trained a total of 98 Division A Officers, 93 in our currently chartered clubs, and 5 in the Storyteller Club, which is going through the process of chartering. Seventeen (17) clubs trained at least 4 of their 7 officers.
The new story telling club continues to meet Saturday’s at KNPB Channel 5 and hope to Charter by the spring of 2015. Area 12 Governor Staci Nauman is very active in supporting this new club and their efforts to get chartered. New members and guests are most welcome.
