Letter from Dr. Gregory J. Vincent

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 2016 Texas Male Student Leadership Summit. We are honored to co-host this event for the third year in a row, and I must say that The University of Texas at Austin is more committed than ever to the success of men of color in higher education. We are proud to bring together such a dynamic group from across the state, both our students who are excelling at the highest levels and the professionals who are dedicated to their academic success, and we are excited to be focusing this year’s Summit on three major themes: Leadership, Career Readiness, and Brotherhood.

This year’s Summit features a new K-12 track designed for 8th grade through 12th grade students in addition to our professional and college tracks. We’re also launching an open mic session where all of you (especially our students) are encouraged to participate and ask questions. Additionally, our career and education exhibit area provides opportunities to interact with corporate recruiters and to learn more about graduate school.

The Texas Male Student Leadership Summit is one piece of the Division of Diversity and Commu-nity Engagement’s $6 million investment in staff, student teaching, outreach, and programming for men of color initiatives over a 10-year period through 2020. This includes the African American Male Research Initiative and Project MALES (Mentoring to Achieve Latino Educational Success) — organizations that continue to set the standard in research and mentoring for these groups. Our commitment is underscored by the generous support of our summit sponsors.

President Obama brought national attention to the opportunity gap for men of color when he launched the “My Brother’s Keeper” White House initiative in February of 2014, and the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color continues to be the vanguard for that cause. Thanks to the trailblazing work of Dr. Victor Sáenz, Dr. Luis Ponjuán, Dr. Emmet Campos and the graduate student members of the Project MALES team, we are developing evidence-based practices that are the keystone to bridging that gap.

Thank you for joining us for this year’s Summit and for being a part of the change that we all seek for this and future generations. Together we will ensure that young men of color have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gregory J. Vincent Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement W.K. Kellogg Professor in Community College Leadership Professor of Law

¡BIENVENIDOS! / WELCOME!Welcome to the 2016 Texas Male Student Leadership Summit, hosted by the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color and the Division of Diversity and Community Engage-ment at The University of Texas at Austin. For the third year in a row we are proud to host the Summit on the campus of UT Austin, and we have planned a dynamic two days of sessions, presenters, and speakers. The Summit brings together emerging student leaders from high schools to community colleges to four-year institutions across the state of Texas. Each of you were selected by your institution as a positive example of young men of color within your community, and we are honored to host you.

This year our Summit themes are Leadership, Career Readiness, and Brotherhood. Throughout our two-days together you will find these themes embedded within each session and activity. Our goal for you is to immerse yourself in these themes, to reflect on what they mean to you, and to adopt them as key life goals. These themes bind us together as men, and so we challenge you to embrace them during the next two days and beyond.

The Summit sessions are structured around two student tracks and one professional track. There is one student track for K-12 students and another for college students. The Summit also features a third track for professionals focused on best practices and emerging research on males of color. We are also excited to feature several notable national speakers including: Mr. Ernesto Mejia from CoolSpeak, Dr. Luis Ponjuán from Texas A&M University, tech entre-preneur Zaitrarrio Collier, and Dr. Cesar Cruz, co-founder of Homies Empowerment Program, among others. In addition, you will hear from countless industry and corporate sector leaders and higher education practitioners that have much to offer.

Ultimately, this Summit is about you, and we challenge you to take advantage of this opportu-nity to proactively represent your institution, build your network, and develop yourself into the best leader and brother you can be. Your participation in this Summit is a positive step forward in pursuing your own educational goals and also in advancing a positive narrative for males of color in our society.

This Summit is occurring at a profound time in our nation’s history, when so much attention is being focused on young men of color in our communities. Together, we represent a community that is commit-ted to being better role models, better leaders and mentors, and stronger examples of what men of color should be for our families, communities, and for our nation. Thank you for being here.

Victor B. Sáenz, Ph.D. Executive Director Project MALES & the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color

Ponjuán speaks across the nation to educational leaders focused on translating the research into professional practice. He continues to be an ambassador for the Consortium to ensure that others learn about what Texas schools, community colleges, and four-year institutions are doing to help male students of color academically succeed.

Ponjuán earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Michigan, master’s degree from the Florida State University and bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of New Orleans. He is a first-generation Cuban immigrant and college graduate. Featured Speakers

Zaitrarrio Collier Zay Collier is an educator and an entrepreneur who has founded and grown more than 10 companies, including high-tech startups and nonprofits. His successes span the gamut, from the development of a multimedia educational platform which employed a diverse cast of characters to help elementary students learn algebra, to his latest efforts educating students through aviation and entrepreneurship. Currently, Zay is pursuing systemic change

in education as a Bridge Fellowship with the national education reform organization, The New Teachers Project. He is also the CEO of a tech consulting firm and the founder of a nonprofit that seeks to increase engagement in STEM through aviation. (Did we mention he’s also a pilot?)

Dr. César Cruz From marching 76-straight miles, to hunger striking for 26 days, Dr. César Cruz has dedicated his life to fighting for justice. He was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, México, and migrated to the U.S. at a young age with a single mother and grandmother. César graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in History. Ernesto Mejia Ernesto Mejia, the proud son of Mexican immigrants, is a true example of the American dream. Diagnosed with the rare disease of Guillain-Barré Syndrome at the age of 16 that left him temporarily paralyzed, he was not supposed to be a successful student, much less a college dean of students. Through his hardships, Ernesto learned to never give up on life. A founding member of the Student Leadership Inspired by Consuelo Kickbusch (SLiCK) program,

he now speaks to students, parents and teachers about overcoming obstacles and never giving up on the American dream: education. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and literature from Eastern Michigan University and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Lewis University.

Dr. Sarah Rodriguez Dr. Sarah Rodriguez is an assistant professor of community college leadership/higher education at Iowa State University. Sarah has been involved with the Improving Outcomes for Men of Color in Community Colleges Initiative at the Center for Community College Student Engagement and serves as an affiliate faculty member for Project MALES and the Minority Male Community College Collaborative. Sarah’s research addresses issues

of equity, access, and retention for Latina/o students in the higher education pipeline, with a particular focus on the intersections of race/ethnicity and gender for Latinas in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and Latinos in community colleges. She received her Ph.D., in Higher Education Leadership from The University of Texas at Austin and holds an M.S. from the University of Tennessee as well as a B.A. in English and Spanish from Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Dr. Cristobal Salinas Dr. Cristobal Salinas Jr., is an assistant professor in the Educational Leadership and Research Methodology Department at Florida Atlantic University’s College of Education. He holds a B.A. in Spanish education and ESL from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and an M.Ed. in educational leadership & policy studies and Ph.D. in higher education, both from Iowa State University. He coauthored “Iowa’s Community Colleges: A Collective History of Fifty Years of Accomplishment.”

Cristobal is the co-founder and managing editor for The Journal Committed to Social Change on Race and Ethnicity. His research promotes access and quality in higher education and explores the social, political, and economic context of education opportunities for historically marginalized communities, with an emphasis on Latino/a communities.

Master of Ceremonies

Dr. Patrick Valdez Dr. Patrick Valdez has held several executive level positions at public and private universities as well as national higher education associations in Washington D.C. He has committed his life to helping students overcome the barriers and obstacles to obtaining a college degree and currently serves as dean of the Undergraduate College at College Mount Saint Vincent. He received a bachelor of arts in International Studies from St. Edward’s

University, a master of arts degree in student personnel administration from Teachers College, Columbia University in the City of New York, and a doctorate in higher education administration from The University of Texas Austin.

About Us The Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color (Consortium) was officially launched in 2013, funded by two grant awards from the Greater Texas Foundation and TG as well as funding from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at UT Austin. This state-wide collaboration of ISDs and two-year and four-year institutions across the state, seeks to align and coordinate existing programs and services that target underrepresented male students across the education continuum. It further seeks to stimulate new male-focused initiatives within Texas school districts, colleges, and universities. Current Consortium members are below.
