Diwali (Deepawali) – “Festival of Lights”

Diwali is known as Festival of Lights ( The word Deepawali means “Rows of Lamps” )

This important five (5) day festival is celebrated among Hindus in all parts of the world.

Generally celebrated in Mid October to Mid November every year.

Celebration of the victory of good over evil. The festival is usually celebrated by:

Decorating Home –Lighting Lamps, Hanging Lanterns, Rangoli ( color Sand Design)

Get Together of Family and Friends. Prayer to god for the Happiness. Exchanging, distributing Gifts and special sweets. Fireworks.

Diwali (Deepawali) – “Festival of Lights”

Lantern: Colorful paper lanterns for the Diwali decoration.

Rangoli, the color sand.

Lighting Lamps.

Diwali (Deepawali) – “Festival of Lights”

Diyas (lamp) symbolize the knowledge that destroys negative traits; such as anger, jealousy, greed, fear or suffering.

In addition to diyas, firecrackers light up the streets.

Rangoli, made of colored powder, dry grains and/or flowers, adorns the doorstep to welcome guests with honor. Diwali is a

season for visiting friends and family.

Sweets ("mithais") are enjoyed during Diwali.

Traditional dances add to the festivities.
