What is “DIY”?
Do it yourself (DIY) is a term used to describe building, modifying, or repairing of
something without the aid of experts or professionals. The phrase "do it yourself"
came into common usage in the 1950s in reference to home improvement
projects which people might choose to complete independently.
In recent years, the term DIY has taken on a broader meaning that covers a
wide range of skill sets. DIY is associated with the international alternative rock,
punk rock, and indie rock music scenes; indymedia networks, pirate radio
stations, and other communities.
In this context, DIY is related to the Arts and Crafts movement, in that it offers an
alternative to modern consumer culture's emphasis on relying on others to
satisfy needs.

DIY DISTRESSED DENIM CUT-OFFS
How to:
1. Put the shorts/jeans on and mark how short you want to cut them.
2. Take the shorts off and cut them from the outside seam inwards - making sure to leave a few
inches of fabric inside the leg at the crutch. You essentially want them to be longer at the crutch
than on the side of the leg.
3. Put the shorts on and check the length and style - you may want to cut a bit more off or alter them
slightly.
4. Use the scissors to make a series of horizontal slits about an inch apart. Make sure you move the
pocket out of the way to do this. 6. Repeat on the other side.
7. Put the shorts into the washing machine on a normal wash. This should be enough movement to
remove a lot of the blue threads between the slits in the front so that you have just the white threads
and some gaps showing through. The hem should also have loosened up.
8. Let the shorts dry.
You need:
• A pair of old denim
shorts or jeans
• Scissors
• A washing machine

DIY CREATIVE NUT BRACELETS
MORE BRACELET IDEAS!
This is a fun and very creative
bracelet made out of gold or
silver nuts, normally used to
secure bolts. With some earthy
looking yarn, create a large knot
at the top. Begin doing a simple
braid, and when you like, begin
braiding in the nuts. It’s incredible
how elegant this bracelet turns
out when the materials are so
industrial.
