DIY Rustic Media Center/TV Stand Plans:

1. Build the front and back frames.

a. Cut four 4x4 boards to 34 1/2” in length each.

b. Cut three 1x2 boards to 55 ¾” in length each.

c. Drill two ¾” pocket holes into each end of one side of each 1x2.

d. Front frame:

i. Using 1 ¼” pocket hole screws, attach a 1x2 between two 4x4 boards. The

top of the 1x2 should be flush with the top of the 4x4 boards and flush

with the front edge of the 4x4s, pocket holes should be facing up.

e. Back frame:

i. Using 1 ¼” pocket hole screws, attach a 1x2 between the remaining two

4x4 boards. The top should be flush with the top of the 4x4s, but the edge

of the 1x2 should be inset ¼” from the back edge of the 4x4. Pocket holes

should face up.

ii. Attach a 1x2 4 ¾” up from the bottom of the 4x4. The 1x2 should again

be inset ¼” from the back edge of the 4x4s. Pocket holes should be facing

down.

2. Connect the front and back frames:

a. Cut four 2x4 boards to 15 ½” each

b. Drill two 1 ½” pocket holes into each end of one side of each board

c. Use wood glue and 2 ½” pocket hole screws to attach a 2x4 to the left 4x4 on the

front and back panel, and to the right 4x4s on the front and back panels . The top

2x4s should be flush with the top of the 4x4s and should align with the side

edges of the 4x4s, the pocket holes should face up.

d. Use wood glue and 2 ½” pocket hole screws to attach a 2x4 between the front

and back 4x4 on each side. The 2x4s should be 4” from the bottom of the 4x4s

and the pocket holes should face down.

a. Cut two 1x2 boards to 15 ½” each.

b. Drill two ¾” pocket holes on each end of one side of each 1x2

c. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws to attach a 1x2 between each of the

right and left 4x4s. The top of the 1x2 should be 7” below the bottom of the

upper 2x4. The inner edge of the 1x2 boards should be flush with the inner edge

of each 4x4. Pocket holes should face down.

d. Cut a ¾” cabinet grade plywood board to 55 ¾” x 17 ¼” and drill three ¾”

pocket holes along both long edges on one side, and two ¾” pocket holes along

both short edges on the same side.

e. Cut a 1x2 board to 55 ¾” in length. Drill two ¾” pocket holes into each short

edge on one surface of the board.

f. Cut a 1x4 board to 55 ¾” in length. Drill two ¾” pocket holes into each short

edge on one surface of the board.

g. Using wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws, attach the 1x4 board to one of the

long edges, and the 1x2 board to the other long edge of the ¾” plywood.

h. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws to attach the shelf to the 4x4 boards

and to the left and right 2x4s. The 1x2 should be attached to the back frame, with

a ¼” inset from the back edge of the 4x4, and the 1x4 should be attached to the

front 4x4s. All pocket holes should face down.

a. Cut a ¾” cabinet grade plywood board to 55 ¾” x 17 ¼” and drill three ¾”

pocket holes along both long edges on one side, and two ¾” pocket holes along

both short edges on the same side.

b. Cut a 1x4 board to 55 ¾” in length. Drill two ¾” pocket holes into each short

edge on one surface of the board.

c. Using wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws, attach the 1x4 board to one of the

long edges of the ¾” plywood

d. Using wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws, attach the plywood shelf with

the attached front trim to the back 1x2, the side 2x4s, and the front 4x4s.

5. Add the top support boards

a. Cut two 1x2 boards to 19 ¼’ in length each.

b. Drill two ¾” pocket holes into each end of one surface of the 1x2 boards.\

c. Using wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws, attach the 1x2 boards to the top frame

front and back 1x2s. The left and right edges of the new 1x2 boards should be 17

1/8” from the inner edge of the side 2x4s, and there should be 18 ½” between the two

1x2s. Pocket holes should face up.

6. Add the top shelf dividers and trim

a. Cut two ¾” boards of cabinet grade plywood to 18 ¾” x 7 ¾” each.

b. Cut two 1x4 boards to 7 ¾” in length each.

c. Use wood glue and 1 ½” wood screws (predrill first) to attach the divider boards

and the 1x4 divider trim boards, aligning the center of the divider boards with the

center of the above 1x2 boards. Attach through the top of the 1x2 boards into the

top of the divider and trim boards, and then up through the bottom of the ¾”

shelf board into the divider boards and trim boards.

7. Add the bottom shelf dividers and trim boards

a. Cut two ¾” cabinet grade plywood boards to 18 ¾” x 19 ¾” each.

e. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws to attach each divider board with

attached trim to the upper and lower shelves. The bottom divider boards

should be aligned with the upper shelf dividers.

8. Add the middle center shelf and trim

a. Cut one ¾” cabinet grade plywood board to 18 ¾” x 19 ¼”.

b. Drill three ¾” pocket holes into one of the 19 ¼” edges on one surface

d. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws to attach the 1x4 trim board to the

¾” plywood board.

e. Use wood glue and 1 ½” wood screws (predrill first) to attach the ¾” board with

the attached trim 9 ½” above the bottom shelf (attach through the left and right

divider boards into the center shelf).

9. Add the bottom center divider and trim board

a. Cut a ¾” cabinet grade plywood board to 9 ½” x 18 ¾”

b. Drill two ¾” pocket holes into both 18 ¾” edges on one surface and two ¾”

pocket holes on one of the 9 ½” edges on the same surface

c. Cut a 1x4 board to 9 ½” in length

d. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws to attach the 1x4 trim board to the 9

½” edge of the ¾” plywood.

e. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws to attach the divider in the center of

the bottom section (there should be 9 ¼” in space between the divider board and

the inner edges of the center section.

a. Cut three 2x6 boards to 57 ¾” in length each

b. Drill two 1 ½” pocket holes into short edge on one surface of each 2x6,

and drill three 1 ½” pocket holes into one of the long edges on the same

surface.

c. Cut two 2x4 boards to 57 ¾” in length each.

d. Drill two 1 ½” pocket holes into each short edge of the 2x4 on one

surface, and drill three 1 ½” pocket holes on one of the long edges of just

one of the 2x4s, on the same surface

e. Cut two 2x4 boards to 23 ½” in length each.

f. Use wood glue and 2 ½” pocket hole screws to attach the three 2x6 boards

together along the long end, and then attach a 2x4 on each long side of the

attached 2x6 boards

g. Use wood glue and 2 ½” pocket hole screws to attach one 23 ½” 2x4

board to each end of the attached 2x4 and 2x6 boards.

h. Attach the assembled top onto the frame using wood glue and 2 ½” wood

screws (predrill first). Attach through the bottom of the 2x4 and 1x2

boards that comprise the top of the frame, and screw into the underside of

the top panel. The back of the top should sit flush with the back of the 4x4

legs, and the front should overhang the frame by ~1”. The top should be

centered on the frame from side to side, and should overhang the side

edges by ~1” on each side.

ends to create each side panel

c. Cut two ¾” cabinet grade plywood boards to 19” x 15 ½” each

d. Drill two ¾” pocket holes into one of the 19” length sides on one surface.

e. Cut two 1x4 boards to 17 ½” in length. Then using a table saw or circular saw,

trim off ¼” on the long edge of each board.

f. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws, attach the trimmed 1x4 board to the

plywood board, aligning the boards with opposite sides of the board for each

board

c. Drill two ¾” pocket holes into both ends of one surface of each 14 ¼” 1x2

d. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws to attach the 14 ¼” 1x2 boards to the 19

½” 1x2 boards

e. Using the router and the ½” straight edge router bit, router out the inner rectangle of

the 1x2s making up the cabinet door frame. You’ll need to use a chisel to square the

corners as the router rounds those.

f. Cut four ¼” plywood boards to 7 5/8” x 17 ½” each.

g. Use wood glue and ½” brad nails with a nail gun to attach the plywood center into

each frame. (The plywood should fit into the routed edges of the frame, and two

boards should fit in each door center.

h. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” pocket hole screws to attach the drawer bottom to the

drawer sides and front and back (the bottom of the drawer base should be flush with

the bottom of the drawer sides).

i. Use wood glue and 1 ½” wood screws to attach the front panel (predrill first). Attach

from the inside of the drawer through the front board into the front panel. The top

and bottom of the front panel should be flush with the top and bottom of the drawer.

The right and left side of the front panel should overlap the drawer by ¼” on each

side.

15. Cut and attach the back panel

a. Cut a ¼” piece of plywood to 55 ¾” x 29 ¾”

b. Attach to the back of the media center using 1 ¼” brad nails and a nail gun.

16. Cut and attach the cabinet door ¼” cove molding trim pieces.

a. Cut four ¼” cove molding pieces to 17 ½” in length long end to long end, with

each end mitered to 45o

c. Use wood glue and nail gun with ¼” brad nails to attach the cove molding pieces

around the inside edges of the right and left media center side panels

18. Sand the entire media center, including the cabinet doors and drawers.

19. Apply wood preconditioner to the media center, cabinet doors and drawer fronts.

20. Apply stain of your choosing (I used a ½ and ½ mix of Varathane Carrington stain and

Varathane Weathered Grey stain.

21. Once stain has dried, apply three coats of polyurethane (I used the matte finish)

22. Attach the cabinet doors using two cabinet door hinges on each door.

23. Attach the drawer rails to the cabinet and the drawers and insert drawers into rails.

24. Attach the cabinet door handles and drawer pulls.
