D&L TrailTrail Map & Guide
Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor
Welcome to the 165-mile D&L Trail!
Use this guide to explore the 71-mile Anthracite Region of the D&L Trail as it travels from the City of Wilkes-Barre through the Pocono Mountains to Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gap. The D&L Trail is a multi-use path that follows the routes of three historic transportation systems: the Lehigh Navigation Canal, the Delaware Canal, and the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Stretching 165 miles through eastern Pennsylvania from Wilkes-Barre to Bristol, the D&L Trail is the spine of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, one of 49 National Heritage Areas in the United States.
The Anthracite Region is the most forested of the three D&L regions with hundreds of natural areas to explore. In this region alone, users can access 38,000 acres of State Park, 128,000 acres of State Game Lands, 25,000 acres of State Forest, and countless lakes and streams. Also along the D&L Trail are many quaint towns where trail users can stop to explore history, culture, food, and more. From the riverfront of Wilkes-Barre and the cascading waterfalls of Seven Tubs
and vibrant downtown of Jim Thorpe, the Anthracite Region tells the story of America’s industrial past in a beautiful
For more adventure and history, pick up our other two maps and explore the Lehigh Valley and Delaware Canal regions of the D&L Trail.

White Haven served as the junction of the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad and the Upper Grand section of the Lehigh Canal, where coal and iron transferred for shipment south to Mauch Chunk and beyond. This small town is the northern gateway to Lehigh Gorge State Park and the entry point for thousands of cyclists using the D&L Trail and paddlers entering the Lehigh River. The town is located just
Nescopeck State Park, and the Lehigh River’s Francis E. Walter Dam.
Visit the White Haven Community Library, located in the restored Lehigh Valley Railroad Engine Repair Shop for more information on the town’s history. Also nearby is the 29-ton
of the Upper Grand section of the Canal.
Lehigh Gorge State Park runs south along the river from White Haven to Jim Thorpe. This 26-mile stretch of near-wilderness is home to breathtaking mountain and river views as the Lehigh River carves its way southward. Along the shore, cyclists, rafters, hikers, cross-country skiers, and even snowmobilers can admire the remains of the railroad and canal locks. Both Jim Thorpe and White Haven are home to professional
service. Visit the southern access point of Lehigh Gorge State Park to see an abandoned railroad tunnel where coal-carrying cars once passed through the mountain. This access point also marks the trailhead for beautiful Glen Onoko Falls.
Jim Thorpe’s charm is rooted in the marriage of heritage and outdoor recreation. The downtown, a National Historic District, is home to two national historic landmarks: The Asa Packer Mansion and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, both a short walk from the D&L Trail. Take a break from recreation to tour the town, eat at one of the many restaurants, ride the historic train, or stay the night at a Victorian B&B. A dedicated bike and pedestrian bridge is expected to be complete by late 2017,
county with 31 continuous miles of trail.
South of Jim Thorpe the D&L Trail parallels one of the most intact segments of the Lehigh Canal on its way to Weissport.
boarding. Visit Weissport’s Lehigh Canal Park to gain access to this section of trail. Just across the Lehigh River is the town of Lehighton, founded in 1746 by Moravian missionaries. Here, users can access the half-mile Lehighton spur trail to access downtown Lehighton or continue south to Bowmanstown and Lehigh Gap Wildlife Refuge, the southern boundary of the Anthracite Region and the start of the Lehigh Valley Region. Trail users can access the Appalachian Trail and Lehigh Gap Nature Center, the only Superfund site in the country to be restored to an environmental education center.See the D&L Trail Lehigh Valley Region map for more information.

2 miles to Wilkes-Barre
10 Miles to White Haven
The Northern Terminus of the D&L Trail lands in the heart of Wilkes-Barre, on the Susquehanna River. This industrial city was built by the coal and iron of the Northeastern Pennsylvania rail-and-canal system, still visible in the many architectural and industrial elements of the past.
Residents of the Wilkes-Barre area soon will have access to the D&L Trail from the Laurel Run Trailhead and be able to ride through Seven Tubs Nature Area into Oliver Mills. Just three miles from the Laurel Run Trailhead is the 600-acre Seven Tubs Nature Area. The highlight of this preserve is Wheelbarrow Run, a small stream that cascades through ponds and waterfalls as it follows the footsteps of glacial melt-water. This is just one of the many features the last ice age marked in this area.
