    Introduction

DLNA is an acronym for Digital Living

Network Alliance. It is a capability in a

device allowing it to talk to other devices

    with another DLNA device.

    It interconnects electronic devices within

    a zone.

    What is DLNA?

DLNA is a standard based on UPnP model, whoseprimitive goal was to attach all devices directly tocomputer.

With a view to interconnect devices seamlessly,DLNA was brought to light. DLNA represents thecontent negotiation and sharing portion.

At a customary level, a DLNA device works like anyother device by discovering other DLNA-enabled

hosts. But its competence doesnt stop there. TheDLNA device goes on to learn other devicescapabilities.

Consumers wish to inter-operate in these 3zones

Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) is across-industry organization of leading operatorsof these 3 islands - consumer electronics, computing industry and mobile devices.

They provide a seamless environment forsharing and growing new digital media andcontent services.

All of this requires three basic components - a player, a server and a

stream of data that are all compatible with each other.

Networking and connectivityWith the network addresses getting depleted, IPv6 protocol emerged, animproved version of IPv4.

Advantages of using IP in digital home network:

IP allows applications running over different media to communicatetransparently.

IP can connect every device in the home to the Internet. Since IP isthe protocol of the Internet, any device in the digital home can bepotentially connected to any other Internet-connected device in theworld.

IP connectivity is inexpensive. Because it is ubiquitous, economies ofscale and competition combine to make physical mediaimplementations of IP available at lower cost than other technologies.

    Discovery

    Discovery includes device and servicediscovery.

    This takes into account -

Discovering the presence and capabilities ofother devices in the connected network.

Control and interconnect with the discovereddevices.

The Service protocol used in DLNA isSSDP - Simple Service Discoveryprotocol.

    nter-opera ty amongvendor products

There must be a common standard amongthe products for the operation and DLNApublishes guidelines for inter-operability.

    Quality of Service (QOS)

Quality of service is the ability to providedifferent priority to different applications, users, or data flows, or to guarantee acertain level of performance to a data flow.

    Authentication &

    Authorisation

    Authentication is the mechanism whereby

systems may securely identify their users.

Authentication systems provide an answer to thequestions:

    Who is the user?

Is the user really who he/she represents himself to be?

Authorization, by contrast, is the mechanism by

which a system determines what level of access a

particular authenticated user should have to

secured resources controlled by the system.

    Digital Rights Management

(DRM) Content must be protected from

    unauthorized copying and use.

    Today, there are several DRM

technologies available to devicedesigners and content providers.

    Conclusion

With growing demand for consumer goods, there is an equalrise in crave for interconnecting devices, be at home or office.DLNA is THE way to achieve is.

The best aspect of DLNA is that it allows products from differentmanufacturers to talk to each other.

With DLNA all leading CE companies are tied in a technologicalknot; there is interdependence, yet independence with their ownproducts.

In the near future, digital homes will contain intelligent platforms

which will manage and distribute rich digital content torendering devices such as televisions and wireless monitorsfrom devices such as digital cameras, camcorders andmultimedia mobile phones.
