Synopsis!
Defective Man! is the story of two office workers that are involved in a horrible
chemical accident in the supply closet. As the result of this accident, they
are transformed into our two main “heroes,” Defective Man and Horn Dog.
Unfortunately for our heroes, the chemicals didnʼt actually give them any
powers.
After putting up with Defective Man and Horn Dogʼs new “traits” for a few
years, there comes a breaking point at work. The company canʼt just fire
them, as they were injured at work and are now covered by the Americans
with Disabilities Act, but the company can no longer tolerate Defective Man
and Horn Dogʼs antics, so a compromise is reached. Defective Man and
Horn Dog are offered a deal in which they will continue to be paid their
salary and benefits for the rest of their lives, as long as the promise to
never, ever, come to work again.
Defective Man and Horn Dog take their severance package and their newly
acquired free time and decide to set up their own freelance, low-impact law
enforcement business. They procure some free space in a local
warehouse to use as their “secret” lair, and also recruit two more not-so-
super-heroes to join their cause, Captain Orange-Piss (bet you can guess
his special power) and the man from the Rio Grande, Bill Gill. The
Defective Four equip their almost-secret lair with the latest in technology (a
Super-VHS VCR, a Tandy TRS-80 computer and dot-matrix printer, and a
white board), and begin advertising their services to the public.
The Defective Fourʼs crime fighting abilities will be tested by Defective
Manʼs nemesis (and ex-girlfriend), the dastardly Hevvy Flo and her right-
hand-man / lover, Ronny Tobins, as they implement a nefarious scheme to
slowly flood Albuquerque over a matter of days via an overly-complicated
scheme involving the city water supply and hallucinogenic drugs. In
addition to the threat posed by Hevvy Flo, the Defective Four will be tested
by video store violence, hoodlums intent on hurting the homeless, bad b-
boys hell-bent on besting our heroes in a break-dancing boogie down,
keeping the semi-secret lair a secret (especially from the other people
working in the warehouse), and of course, paying the bills.

The making of
Ryan became involved with Defective Man! way back in 2006 when Steve
contacted him about a script Steve had written. Steve had seen a short
Ryan directed while portraying The Toxic Avenger at the Troma Dance
New Mexico film festival, and thought he would be a good choice to direct
the script Steve had written about two wanna-be superheroes, Defective
Man and Sexual Man. Steve sent the script to Ryan, who read it and
agreed to be involved, as long as Ryan could re-write the script.
The original script for Defective Man! contained many elements that could not
be done on the budget level that SB-Films worked at, and also needed
polishing, especially on the dialogue. Ryan filled his time between
technical support calls at TiVo busting out a quick 2nd draft of the script.
Steve had changes he wanted to that 2nd draft, so Ryan and Steve
collaborated on a 3rd draft, which became the “shooting script,” though
much of what was written changed by the time it was shot.
Ryan changed jobs, moving on to manage a Hollywood Video in the “war
zone” of Albuquerque (known as “The Murder Store”, as it was the site of
the 2nd worst mass-murder in Albuquerqueʼs history), and pre-production
continued. Ryan and Steve attempted to secure financing, and eventually
Steve decided to produce the film himself. Ryan purchased a camera,
lights, and a mic, and Steve started working on costumes and locations for
the film. As is often the case with micro-budgeted cinema, Steve and Ryan
did most every job there was to do on set.
Auditions took place in January 2007 at The Guild Cinema in
Albuquerqueʼs Nob Hill district, and Steve and Ryan found a pool of local
talent willing and able to work for free to make a movie. Well, Ryan and
Steve thought they had found talent willing to work for free, until people
started dropping out! Paul is Defective Man #2, Steve is Captain Orange-
Piss #3, Josh is Bill Gill #3, and Arturo is Horn Dog #4! Luckily, Haylee
was our only Flo, and Trent was the only Ronny, as the role was written
specifically for him!

Defective Man! was originally scheduled for a two-week shoot in the summer
of 2007, but the aforementioned actor issues, along with Ryan now
changing jobs to work at a bank, nixed the two-week plan. Instead,
shooting began on evenings and weekends, starting with the “Park Bench”
scenes. Then, all of Trent ʼs footage was shot in the course of a weekend,
as he was in town for the premier of Scott Phillipsʼ Gimme Skelter.
Shooting became much more sporadic after that, as we had to line up
people and places and somehow get everyoneʼs schedules to work
together. This continued until November 2007, when we shut down for the
winter. In spring 2008 shooting continued, more sporadically, until that
winter when we shut down once again. Spring 2009 saw the very few
remaining scenes shot, and by April 2009 principal photography wrapped.
The shooting script has changed many, many times due to unforeseen
circumstances (losing locations, actors not showing up, props/costumes
not available, etc.), and in itʼs final form, Defective Man! the movie was quite
different than Defective Man! the shooting script. All of the film was shot in
Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, New Mexico, at locations graciously
provided to SB-Films. These locations included Parkʼs Landscaping as the
Office, Garciaʼs Tents as the Secret Lair, Autumnwood Furniture as the
Smegma Flats Water Treatment Facility, The Lotus Club as Skeezy
Sundstromʼs Skin Shack, Burning Paradise as Burning Paradise, and The
Guild Cinema as The Guild Cinema. Other random locations – such as
Steve and Ryanʼs houses, Steveʼs back yard, various alleys around
Albuquerque, etc. – filled in the gaps for the rest of the filming.
Various artists have provided music, and more music is being solicited for
the film. So far, musicians providing music include The Mike Project,
Styxxoplix, RiverRat Jenkins, Rebilt, Illustrated Man, Mark “M.E.” Edwards,
WURM, Gunrunner, Gonzorealism, SCG, and Aaron Michael Martinez.
Scenes premiered at Troma Dance New Mexico 2007 and 2008, as well as
Bubonicon 2008. Defective Man!: The you can’t illegally download it on torrent sites yet cut
premiered at the Troma Dance New Mexico 2009 festival, and more
footage is available online, on YouTube and Facebook. Final editing and
sound work was completed May, 2010. Defective Man! premiered at the
historic Guild Cinema on May 28th and May 29th, 2010. Since the premier,
Ryan has moved to San Antonio, TX, and intends to continue his work in
film here in Texas.
