Course DescriptionImplant dentistry has become something the average general dentist
comes across on a daily basis, and the most common form of these restorations is the single-tooth implant. Whether the general dentist places implants or refers the surgical aspects out, a thorough knowledge of pre-surgical treatment planning can aid the restorative dentist in approaching the single-tooth edentulous space with greater confidence.
Educational ObjectivesParticipants who complete this course should be able to:• Determine the suitability of a site for a single-tooth implant;• Determine the suitability of condemned teeth for atraumatic extraction;• Appreciate the rationales for timing of surgical implant placement;• Recognize both the clinical and radiographic factors that play a role in
treatment planning for implants;• Understand to what degree a restoratively-driven surgical treatment
plan can alter the restorative outcome of therapy;• Recognize when a tooth slated for extraction is a good candidate
for an immediate implant according to both functional and esthetic parameters;
• Understand post-extraction alveolar ridge resorption and how socket preservation and immediate implant placement affect this phenomenon;
• Recognize how surgical and restorative planning affects implant maintenance;
• Recognize when a more invasive surgical approach is appropriate;• Appreciate how the implementation of socket wall and furcal bone
classifications impact on treatment planning for immediate implants.
Course OutlineI. Distinctions between single-tooth implant restorations
and multiple-implant restorationsII. The importance of having a restoratively-driven
treatment planIII. Contraindications for implant dentistryIV. Sequencing of the dental treatment planV. The position of implant dentistry within the dental
treatment planVI. The roles of the following as they relate to treatment
planning implant dentistry:A. The mm rules of implant dentistryB. Bone quality and quantityC. Crown-to-implant ratioD. Buccal plate and its relationship to estheticsE. Implant length and diameterF. Keratinized tissue and biotypeG. Immediate implants vs. site developmentH. Radiographic diagnostics and distortionI. Implant position, angulation and depthJ. Sinus involvement and augmentation
