I have a habit of walking into trouble. I dont knowif it is my bad luck that Im invariably at the wrongplace at the wrong time. After the serial train blastsin July 2006, I found myself in the middle of anoth-er nightmarish situation on Wednesday.

I was cursing the peak-hour rush and pot-holed roads near Dr Antonio DSilva

School near Dadar. Thepheriwalaswere doing brisk sales and office-goers were muscling their way towards Dadar station. Suddenly, there was a deafening sound notonce, but twice. The first blast wasfollowed by a relatively lower one.But it was enough to create panic.

I could see people running fortheir lives amid huge billows ofsmoke everywhere. There werecars with broken windows, dam-aged shops and injured people. Thesight was depressing.

The investigating agencies, working to find out theperpetrators behind the triple blasts that rocked Mum-bai on Wednesday, are prima facie suspecting the in-volvement of the terror outfit, Indian Mujahideen(IM), which has been instrumental in a series of blastsacross the country since 2006.

Investigators suspect that the way in which the blastshave been executed point to the involvement of theterror group, which has earlier used similar modusoperandi. The usage of vehicles, IEDs, cars and mo-torbikes show their involvement. Initial investigationsindicate that cell phone alarms were used to detonatethe IEDs, a police officer said. The intensity of the blastsindicate the use of RDX, which the group has used inearlier blasts like the German bakery blast in 2010.

The Bhatkal brothers (Riyaz and Iqbal) from Kar-

nataka head the IM group, which claims responsibili-ty by sending emails to various media houses. Intelli-gence agencies suspect both brothers to be hiding inBangladesh. At present, more than 20 IM operatives arelodged in various jails in the country awaiting trial.

Did the IB see it coming?

Last week, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) alerted allstates that the Jamaat ud Dawa and the IM were plan-ning to send in fresh batches of militants in the coun-try. According to the input, IB agents had interceptedtelephonic conversations from within Pakistan occu-pied Kashmir indicating fresh infiltration plans as thecurrent batch of sleeper cells and operatives were ei-ther exposed or arrested. A central intelligence officerbased in Delhi said there was a lull in terror activitiesafter the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. Now, it isclear they were merely regrouping, he said.

    Suicide bomberat work?

Doctors at JJ Hospital taking X-rays of the blast victims bodies beforeconducting post-mortems found what appeared to be a circuit in one ofthe corpses. An investigation is on to find out if the object entered thebody during the blast or if the victim was a suicide bomber.

Terrorreared its ugly head in Mumbai with three blasts in the heart of the cityduring peak houron Wednesday. As innocent Mumbaikars lost their lives, the govt only managed to ask people to keep calm. Forhow long,we ask?

    Team DNAMUMBAI

The feeling was sickeningly familiar when threebombs ripped through the city on Wednesdayevening killing 21 and injuring 130. The figuresare expected to rise. Exactly five years ago on July11, a series of seven blasts on local trains on theWestern line had killed 188 and injured 824.

Wednesdays mayhem started at 6.45pm whena powerful IED went off at the 3rd Agyari Lane, behind Bank of Indias Bullion Exchangebranch, near Khau Galli in Zaveri Bazaar. In-

vestigations showed bombs fitted with timerswere kept in a scooter and a bike, parked at a dis-tance of 6-7ft of each other, outside a shop. Atleast seven people were killed and 17 injured.

Devendra Dagia, a jeweller from Zaveri Bazaarwho was in his office when the blast took place, said he rushed out when he heard a loud noise.Initially I thought it was a cylinder blast in oneof the food stalls. Later I found out it was a bombblast, he said. The effect was such that the en-tire spot was strewn with body parts. The entirestretch of road was bloody. Many of the dead orinjured are familiar faces.

Within 10 minutes another bomb went off in alane next to the Pancharatna Building at 6.55pm.Investigations showed the bomb was planted ona motorcycle parked next to a Wagon R.

Jitendra Shah, a Bhayander resident, whoworks at a brokerage firm in Pancharatna build-ing, said he could not feel anything after hear-ing the blast. Initially I thought it was a cylin-der blast; later I saw people lying on the floor andblood splattered everywhere, Shah said. I anda few other people moved 10 bodies to hospital.

Exactly 10 minutes later, at 7.05pm, a bombwent off near a bus stop outside the Dr AntonioDSilva School near Kabutarkhana, Dadar (West).

The entire bus stop was ripped apar t and a Maru-ti Esteem car passing by was damaged. The po-lice said the motive was clear: maximum dam-age by targeting crowded areas. The modusoperandi is typical of the Indian Mujahideen.

The Zaveri Bazaar blast tookplace at third agyari lane be-hind Bank of Indias BullionExchange branch, near KhauGalli between 6.45 pm, onWednesday. The timer-fittedbombs were suspected to beplaced on two vehicles -- ascooter and a motorbike, which were parked outside ashop at the spot. Two vehicleswere parked within 6 to 10feet distance. Total 7 personswere declared dead and 17 in- jured. The spot where theblast occurred is a very nar-

row lane and hence it was dif-ficult for people to run and forfire-brigade to reach the spot.

In this blast, the third ag-yari lane, Khau gully has lostits one of the most famous pa-pad-seller who was fondlyknown as Ajay Khichiyawala.People from all over ZaveriBazaar visited Ajaysmakeshift stall in the agyarilane almost every evening tomunch on the deliciouskhichiyapapdad that he sold.Ajay who was in his late 30shas been in the business frompast more than three years.

Jagdish Das, who works asa watchman for D D Plaza, which is ten meters away fromthe blast spot said, There was

a loud noise followed by sud-den fire and smoke. Peoplestarted running helter skelterin panic. The glasses of win-dow panes fell down crashing.Another eyewitness, JitendraJain, who runs a jewellry shopin DD Plaza said, There was achaotic situation at the blastspot. After the blast, withinaround three minutes policereached the location from theirregular bandobast spot ofMumbadevi temple. Entryand exit of all the bylanes havebeen barricaded by police.

BJP leader, RajPurohit, said This is the thirdblast in this particular area.

In 1993, it was Kamba Kataarea, in the year 2003 it wasnear Mumbaievi temple andnow this. All these blastshave occurred within 100meters of area. The reasonof targeting this locationis bacause it is financialhub of the city. It is an as-sault on the economy ofthe city.

A senior ATS officialwho was at the spot, said,It is suspected that thebombs were planted on ascooter and a motorbikewhich was parked outside ashop. Timer-fitted bombswere used. It is also suspectedthat ammonium nitrate couldhave been used in the IED.

    Letters to the editor

    A firm stand

Solicitor General (SG) GopalSubramanium deservespraise for taking a firmstand. For the past couple of

years, the Union govern-ment has come under severestrictures from the SupremeCourt over the way it han-dled the various scams andthe court cases related tothem. Though the SG's officedid a valiant job of defend-ing the government, unwill-ingly at times, it was at thereceiving end of the apexcourt because of the enor-mity of its guilt in acqui-escing to great impropri-eties. The SG could hardlybe blamed for the predica-ment it finds itself in. Byputting in his papers, citingthe government's interfer-ence in his work as the rea-son, the SG has shown thathe is a law officer of thecourt and not the servant ofthe government. He hasalso protected the dignity ofhis office.

    Convincing victory

This is with reference to'Fear of losing overcomesDhoni & Co' (July 12). I total-ly disagree with the reportthat the fear of losing hasprompted Dhoni and co. notto attempt a gettable score.Dhoni is the best captain In-dia has ever had. With threewickets down for 94 runsand Suresh Raina back inthe pavilion, chasing a tar-get of 180 on a difficult trackwould not have been easy ascorrectly observed byDhoni. No doubt RahulDravid may be the man ofcrisis, but the speed withwhich he plays may not besufficient to achieve the tar-get in the in ODI or T20.Dhoni knew this and no sen-sible captain will take suchrisk, with the series alreadyin his pocket. India has won

the T20, ODI and now thetest series convincingly, ifnot comprehensively.

India's decision to settle fora draw in the third and finaltest against West Indies isnot without its quota of crit-icism ('Fear of losing over-comes Dhoni & Co', July 12).It was too timid a decision topull down the shutters with-out really attempting a win.Buckling up without facing

the challenge was not ex-pected especially when wehad 7 wickets in hand. Notattempting to chase a get-table score not only showsdisregard for the fans butalso brings home the factthat they gave up even be-fore the real battle wasfought. To complete thematch would have giventhem the confidence to takeon a better team while fac-ing the Englishmen. Blam-ing the pitch is a lame ex-cuse. Risks are to be taken, without which there cannotbe any gain.

    Dealing with

    corruption

In the recent past there hasbeen severe criticism aboutthe way the ruling combineand the prime ministerhave handled various issueslike black money, corrup-tion, J & K, Telangana andother issues. It is to be not-ed that some of the issues

for which present govern-ment is being blamed arenot of recent origin. Cor-ruption has been around fora long time but this is the

first time that the govern-ment is seen taking someaction. What we have seenis some people mockingthose who want to take ac-tion. Simply saying 'I do notfear bullet and lathis' willnot bring any result.

In the national interest, it isthe paramount duty of theParliamentary committeeand the accounts in-chargeto expose all the corruptpeople in the government. But most unfortunately, thecorruption is propagated bythose who are supposed toprotect the interests of theaam aadmi. If our cleanprime minister, ManmohanSingh would have takentough steps against suchtraitors on time, the nation-al scenario could have beendifferent. Similarly whatsteps have been taken tocurb the spiralling prices ofall the essential commodi-ties by the government? Andeven as the prices increasetonnes of foodgrains are leftout in the open to rot.

    Popular leader

It seems that the leaders ofthe ruling Congress partydon't ever come out of thedynastic mindset, wherebythey always need some onefrom the Gandhi-Nehrufamily to lead the party. Tilldate, Rahul Gandhi hasn'tshown any qualities re-quired to lead our country. He can hardly be consid-ered a popular leader, asthere is hardly any indica-tion of a wave in his favour.

    Shahkhar Abidi

A thunderclap sounded in alane next to PancharatnaBuilding at Opera House insouth Mumbai at around 6.55pm, taking the passersby andresidents by surprise. Theblast, the most intense of thethree, is suspected to havebeen triggered in a motor cy-cle parked next to a Wagon R

car. The police suspect the ex-plosives were kept in the mo-torcycle because the damagecaused to it is the maximum.

Jitendra Shah, a Bhayan-der resident, who works for abroking firm at Pancharatna, and an eyewitness, said, Iheard the blast sound andwent numb. Initially, I thoughtit was a cylinder blast, but lat-er when I saw people lying onthe floor and blood splatteredeverywhere it sank that it wasa blast. After that, I helpedmove 10 bodies with the helpof others to the hospital.

The area was thereaftercordoned off and people fromlocal areas and shops rushedto the spot to help the injured

and deceased. The injuredwere taken to nearby hospi-tals like Saifee and Hark-ishondas, while those whosuffered minor injuries weretreated at private clinics.

Family members of AsgarFaiz Mohammed, 25, whodied in the blast, said, Werushed to the spot hoping thathe would be safe but we foundhe was no more. The govern-

ment should do something toensure that such blasts dontoccur repeatedly and ourloved ones dont have to losetheir lives.

Kalpesh Surakhia, anotherbroker working at Pan-charatna, said I passed theblast spot just two minutes be-fore and heard the thunder asI was walking and then sawbodies lying on the ground. Iwas lucky to survive and myfirst response to the blast wasto help those injured and ly-ing on the ground.

The police arrived at thespot and cordoned off thearea, while traffic around thezone was diverted to otherroutes.

    BoomAkshay Deshmane

A relatively less intense bomb rippedthrough the Hanuman Mandir bus stop nearKabutarkhana at 7.05pm on Wednesdayevening. The damage to the people in the sur-roundings was thus correspondingly lesser:only seven people suffered serious injuries.

A smaller number considering the factthat the road is usually choked during theevening rush hours with people. The busstop, residents in the vicinity said, is mostutilised by commuters who alight at the stopfor reaching the Dadar station. A residenteven said, The footpath on which the BESTbus stop is located is the students footpath

during the evenings as their classes get doneby 6.15 pm. The resident was referring to theDr Antonio Da Silva High School and Juniorcollege of commerce.

Ravindra Sawney, another resident of thebuilding located opposite the bus stand wherethe blast took place said, When the blast hap-pened I rushed to my balcony and saw thatthe air was filled with heavy smoke andthings were barely visible. However, I couldsee three people lying injured and two bikeshad also fallen. Also, when the blast hap-pened, the rubble came flying to his house.

Luckily the crowd was less and even thechildren of the school behind the bus-standhad left home. The Police came within 10

minutes of the blast and rushed the injuredto the hospital, he added.

Not to be left alone in publicly expressingtheir sympathies, many politicians made ita point to visit the location while the mediawas hungry for prominent persons voices onthe blast. Manohar Joshi, Nitin Sardesai,Ramdas Athavle, deputy CM Ajit Pawar andthe chief minister also registered their pres-ence at the chaotic site.

The blast site lay exposed to bystandersand anyone in the vicinity as the police strug-gled to control the mobs and the convoy ofthe politicians raising questions about howsecure was he site for investigators to col-lect evidence from.

Fear let loose at KabutarkhanaRUMOUR-MONGERINGThere were rumours that Wednesdays blasts

were a birthday gift for 26/11 terror attack convictand Pakistani national Ajmal Kasab. Messages onFacebook and Twitter that said Kasab was born on

July 13, 1987 went viral in Mumbai. However,Kasabs real birth date, according to jail records,

is September 13, 1987. A Wikipedia entry thatshowed his birth date as July 13 had apparently

been changed by a Chennai-based bankexecutive. He has been traced by the IP addresshe logged in from to change the Wikipedia entry.

Kasab, one of the terrorists involved in 26/11, is isin Arthur Road jail.

TELANGANA TWISTA threat mail was sent from India, routed

through a Saudi Arabian proxy, claim sources inMumbai police cyber cell. Most of the cops feel it

is not a genuine mail and could be a fake entitytrying to gain mileage by infamy. Investigators

feel the MO is distinctly that of IM and not that ofLeT. Besides, an, an aberration from IM MO is

that there is no warning mail that has been sentbefore today's attack. IM religiously follows the

Islamic rule that the enemy should be warnedbefore attack and hence they shoot a mail

minutes before the attack. The organisationclaiming responsibility for 13/7 attack is the

Joint Action Wing of the Hyderabad basedTelangana Agitation Movement (Terror Wing) --- a

    hitherto unknown entity.

    It knocked me

    senseless

I was talkingon the phonewhen the blastrocked mybuilding. Soonafter the ex-plosion, Istopped my

conversation on the phoneand came out to the balconyto see what had happened. AllI could see was a cloud ofblack smoke rising in the air.I was speechless for some-time. After regaining mysenses, I called my brother. When the smoke cleared andI could see something of thesite, I saw the body of aplumpish man lying invertedon the street. I thought he wasdead but when people in thevicinity came for the rescue, they detected some motion inhis body. A taxi driver wasasked to take the body to hos-pital. He seemed hesitant. Butthen some volunteers tookthe body to hospital in a taxi. The injured body of a sari-clad woman was carried on ayellow tarpaulin sheet, put in-side another taxi and taken tohospital.
