IntroductionThis document describes the basic installation and configuration for Microsoft’s DNS server,
which ships with Windows NT® Server 4.0.

Installing DNS
Before you install DNS on the server, it is recommended that you configure the DNS settingsfound under TCP/IP Properties (in Control Panel, double-click Network, click the Protocol tab,
select TCP/IP Protocol, and then click Properties) with the proper host name and domain (see
Figure 1.). This is necessary so that an A record for the server is automatically created when the
zone is created.

To install Microsoft DNS, right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and then click
Properties (see Figure 2).

In the Network properties window, click the Services tab, and then click Add (see Figure 3).

In the Select Network Service dialog box, select Microsoft DNS Server and click OK (see
Figure 4.

Note: It is necessary to have the retail version of Windows NT Server 4.0 in your CD-ROMdrive. The necessary files required for installation of DNS are found in the I386 folder. Also, if
any service packs have already been installed on the server, they must be reapplied after
installing DNS. For more information about service packs, please refer to the Readme files thatcomes with the service packs.

Configuring the Microsoft DNS Server
The Microsoft DNS server is configurable by using the DNS manager. To open the DNSmanager, click Start, click Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click DNS
Manager (see Figure 5).

The Domain Name Service Manager window appears as shown in Figure 6.
Figure 6
After opening the DNS manager for the first time, it is necessary to add the server to configure it.
Select Server List as shown in Figure 6, and then click New Server on the DNS menu as shown
in Figure 7.
Figure 7
Type the IP address of the network card or the NetBIOS name of the server on which DNS is
installed; click OK . Figure 8 assumes the DNS server has an IP address of 140.10.0.5.

The server will appear in the server list as shown in Figure 9.

Setting up Zones for Name Resolution
After the Microsoft DNS service is installed and the service is running properly, it is necessary tocreate zones so that the DNS service can resolve names.
The first zone created should be the reverse lookup zone. To create the zone, double-click the
server that was created in Figure 9 and then click New Zone on the DNS menu (see Figure 10).

Under Zone Type, click Primary (as shown in Figure 11), and then click Next.
Figure 11
For Zone Name, list your network address in reverse with .in-addr.arpa appended to the end. This example is using the network address of 140.10.0.0, so the Zone Name would be entered as10.140.in-addr.arpa. Next, click Zone File and the Zone File name will appear as shown in
Figure 12.

Click Next, and then click Finish; the zone will appear (see Figure 13).
Figure 13
Note: The reverse lookup zone is determined only from the network portion of the IP address. If
the IP address is subnetted out, the subnet portion should not be included in the reverse lookup
zone name. For example, for a Class A address, only the first octet of the IP address will be listedin the name. For a Class B address, the second and first octet will be used in the name. For a
Class C address, the third, second, and first octet will be used in the name.
After the reverse lookup zone is created, it is time to create the zone for which domain(s) the
DNS server will resolve. This process is performed by selecting the server created in Figure 9,and then clicking New Zone on the DNS menu (see Figure 10). At the Creating New Zone
window, select Primary, as shown in Figure 11, and then click Next. For Zone Name, type the
name of your domain and click Zone File. The Zone File will appear (see Figure 14). Acme.comis the domain used in this example.

Click Next and then click Finish; the zone will appear as shown in Figure 15.
Figure 15
Note: The A record for abc shown in Figure 15 will be created automatically only if the proper
DNS information was entered as described in Figure 1.
After the previous steps are completed, the basic steps of installing DNS are complete. The nextstep will be to add the appropriate resource records for the resources in your domain.
For more information on zones, reverse lookup zones, and resource records, please refer to
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/wint/winnt-docs/papers/DNSWP.exe
Note: If you plan to configure your DNS server for Internet use, you must register your domain
with the InterNIC and specify the proper IP address(es) of your DNS server(s). For more
information go to http://www.internic.net.
