DNV GL Standards

The legacy GL Guidelines are split into several standards (each „Chapter“ becomes one Standard)

– Component certification easier (the client gets what he needs)

– Avoid duplication e.g. onshore / offshore

– Modular structure enables better maintenance

Full review of the content will be performed

– Include findings from harmonization process

– The content should stand for itself, Reference to existing documents possible (To be as self sufficient as possible)

– Extent of guidance as in legacy GL Guideline

– Always to give guidance leading to a safe product (where possible), DNV GL allow everyone to use individual solutions if they fulfil the safety level required

Harmonization of DNV GL Standards and Guidelines

The aim is to harmonise the interpretation and approaches between legacy DNV and legacy GL for

– Added value towards the sector – Incorporate latest experiences from

projects – Efficient way of working with certification – Delivery of same service world-wide Current contracts must be fulfilled with the

existing scheme (GL Guideline, IEC/DNV) National systems and requirements offered

as well 11

Project-Specific Requirements of CVA activities

What is the extent of the CVA activities?

Formal requirements provided in CFR 30 Parts 550, 585 and 290

The requirements are mainly in the form of headings

Detailed specification is desirable for a uniform and consistent CVA approval

CVA’s Primary Duties for Facility Design Review

Following are CVA’s primary duties as mentioned in CFR § 585.707:

Conduct an independent assessment of the design of the facility.

Certify that the facility is designed to withstand the environmental and functional load conditions.

Conduct an independent assessment of all proposed:

(1) Planning criteria

(2) Operational requirements

(3) Environmental loading data

(4) Load determinations

(5) Stress analyses

(6) Material designations

(7) Soil and foundation conditions

(8) Safety factors

(9) Other pertinent parameters of the proposed design.

Example: approval of the Rotor Nacelle Assembly (wind turbine)

The RNA (wind turbine) is part of the structure

The IEC system provides a way to ensure its structural integrity:

IEC assumes a Type Approval for the RNA (Component Certificate)

a) as part of the Type Approval a load “spectrum” is approved

b) for a specific offshore site loads on the RNA is approved

c) a site specific approval states that loads are within the approved spectrum

Why is specific Offshore Wind approval requirements relevant?

• Increases investors’ and insurance companies’ willingness to engage

• Enhances competition

• Facilitates evaluation and comparison of proposals

• Drives offshore wind development ahead

• Facilitates trading of offshore assets
