• The popularity of television increased as it became more affordable for consumers.

Television
• TV shows fell into categories of comedy, action, adventure, variety-style entertainment, and quiz shows.
Movies
• Movies became more popular as televisions did.
• Moviemakers tried to get people to go to the theater by using 3-D movies.
• Movie roles for women were stereotypical- often dealing with marriage and hope of marriage.
• Movie roles for African Americans were also stereotypical or one-dimensional.
New Youth Culture
• Young Americans rebelled against old ideas of adult society and looked to controversial styles in music and literature.
• 1951- radio DJ Alan Freed started playing African American rhythm and blues on the radios.
• It became very popular and soon white artists copied the sounds.
• This created the new style of music called rock ‘n’ roll.
