this led President McKinley to declare war

• The U.S. defeated the weak Spanish empire in 4 months• More American

soldiers died from malaria than in battle

Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders

• Teddy Roosevelt recruited a group of soldiers called the Rough Riders• Roosevelt used his fame to

get elected Governor of New York in 1898, then Vice President in 1900. • He became President in

1901 when McKinley was assassinated
