Batting

• Batters box: zone designated for the batter. • Hit: When the batter hits the ball into play and

advances to 1st, 2nd, 3rd base. • Homerun: a hit over the outfield fence which

results in a run for the batting team. • RBI: Runs batted in• Foul: when a hit ball lands in foul territory.

Pitching

• Pitch count: Number of balls & strikes• Strikes: a pitch that is the strike zone • Ball: a pitch that is outside the strike zone• Walk: Awarded to the batter after 4 balls• Strikeout: An out which occurs after 3 strikes.

Fielding

• Flyball or Pop Up: A ball that hit high into the air.

• Groundball: A ball that’s hit on the ground. • Double Play: A single defensive play that results

in two outs. • Assist: When an outfielder throws out a

baserunner. • Force out: When the forced runner is thrown

out.

Base Running

• Tag up: When the runner waits for a pop fly to be caught by the defensive player before running to the next base.

• Stolen base: When the base runner advances to the next base between pitches.

• Lead: When the base runner takes a few steps in the direction of the next base.

Defensive positions: Outfield

Usually the fastest players on the team.

1. Left fielder: Strong arm. Good defense. 2. Center fielder: Fast & quick. Strongest

defense in the outfield. 3. Right fielder: Strong arm. Less skilled.

Defensive Positions: Infield

4. 1st base: Left handed. Great hands. Hits for power.

5. 2nd base: Small, quick, and agile. 6. 3rd base: Agile, strong arm, hits for power. 7. Short stop: Agile, strong arm, hits for average 8. Catcher: Smart player, slower, captain 9. Pitcher: Controls tempo of the game.

Offensive Positions

• Batter: The player at the plate. • 1st base coach: Gets signs from the Manager

which include offense, defense, and pitching.• Man on deck: The next batter. • Man in the hole: The next, next batter.

Defensive Positions: Bullpen

All non-starting pitchers:

• Long Relief: Reliefs starting pitcher from bad start. (1st-5th inning)

• Short relief: Relieves SP from bad start (5th inning and after.

• Set up man: Usually pitches in the 7th and 8th inning. • Closer: Closes the game. Pitches in the 9th inning.

Getting an OUT• A force out is when a base runner who is forced to advance to the next

base, is thrown out by the defense. (video)

• 1839 Abner Doubleday is credited as the inventor of baseball.
