What was wWI?
• A global war centered in Europe.
• Also known as The Great War.
• July 1914 – November 1918
What caused the Great war?
• Long Term Causes: MAIN
Militarism
• Definition: a policy of glorifying the military and keeping it prepared for war
• Caused by: desire to protect overseas colonies from other countries
• European countries want to have the most powerful military in the world • Start an “arms race” = a competition between nations for
superiority in the development and gathering of weapons
• Countries built up massive armies and stocks of weapons
• Contribution to onset of WWI: countries were ready to fight
alliances
• Definition: a union or association formed for mutual benefit
• Caused by: growing rivalries & mutual mistrust among European countries
• Purpose: to protect themselves from opposing armed forces and keep countries from fighting
• Contribution to onset of WWI: • Some alliances had been made secretly, causing suspicion • alliances drew other countries into war when countries
began fighting
Imperialism
• Definition: when a strong nation expands its territory
• Purpose: to expand empire as far as possible to become more powerful
• Contribution to onset of WWI: competition over colonies creates mistrust among European nations
Nationalism
• Definition: pride and deep devotion to one’s nation
• Caused by: nations wanting to assert their power and independence
• Contribution to onset of WWI: • Some areas had a great deal of ethnic unrest and groups
wanted independence
