Last month’s quiz answer... and winner!Quite a few of you were able to identify our mystery local landmark as The Tower windmill at Staunton Harold Reservoir. On the small hill just above the visitor centre, this windmill tower at the top of the reservoir dates from 1798. It was built by the first Lord Melbourne at a cost of £250 and milled local grain.

This month’s prize has been won by Steven Long and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Ian Garside of Healing Hands, Ibstock.

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

Little Acorns Pre-School now open in ThringstoneOn 2nd September 2019, a brand new pre-school opened in Thringstone in the former Sure Start Children’s Centre next to Thringstone Primary School. Many children are already experiencing what Little Acorns Pre-School has to offer and numbers are continually increasing.

Open during term time only, Little Acorns is open from 8.45am-3.30pm, with morning, afternoon or full day sessions available. The pre-school accepts 15 hours FEEE funding for eligible 2 year olds and 15 or 30 hours funding for 3 and 4 year olds.

It is ideal that the pre-school shares the school grounds, as children are able to use the school’s facilities including the MUGA (multi-use games area), the field and the trim trail. Fresh hot dinners can also be provided from the school kitchen for those children who stay for lunch, although parents can send a packed lunch if preferred.

The building has been transformed from the previous Sure Start Children’s Centre, to make it a purpose-built pre-school suitable for little learners. With two large rooms for separate age groups and a smaller room that is set to become a sensory room, the space is perfect for 2-4 year olds to have a variety of experiences to prepare them for school and to encourage independent learning. Following the EYFS curriculum, children learn letters, sounds & maths daily through fun activities and play and the staff select topics based on children’s interests and work in small groups, so learning is age and ability appropriate.

The pre-school also has a secure outdoor area with grass, sand, soil and outdoor resources. It leads off one of the main rooms so learning can naturally flow through from indoors to outdoors. Staff are also forest schools trained and a dedicated forest schools area for the pre-school is being developed in the next few weeks.

For more information about Little Acorns Pre-School, please contact Manager, Lisa Hickman on 01530 222489.

Lucky Paul Dickson of Thringstone, was soon to marry – but there was a problem.Far from cold feet, 45-year-old Paul was suffering from the embarrassment and inconvenience of profuse sweating and bright red face.Fortunately, he knew who to call for help and went straight to Herbal Healing Acupunture Clinic in Coalville.Doctor Ye’s reputation for excellent results in banishing all types of pain, as well as underlying problems, had reached Paul just in time via his fiancée, Yvonne. His marriage was only days away, on August 4, so he dialled the clinic and was seen the very next morning. He said: “I was very uncomfortable with my sweating episodes, which would start at any random time.”He added: “For example, I would be standing in a shop and suddenly would start. Sweat would be pouring from my face. I would go red as anything and feel so uncomfortable.”After consultation and first treatment, Paul’s sweating was under control. They looked at Paul’s underlying health regarding possible causes. The Clinic took into account Paul’s medical history. Five years ago he had been involved in an accident, which led to time off work and depression.

He was drinking and gained weight. He had also been put on anti-depressants, which he was still taking. Into the bargain, he has COPD and bad chest infections. “I’ve had pneumonia five times,” he admitted.Amazingly, the clinic also treated and got rid of his infection using acupuncture, herbal infusions and tablets.

He couldn’t be more pleased, as they have also treated his depression and lifted his mood, enabling him to half his dosage of anti-depressants.Paul is delighted. He says: “I am off the antibiotics too, thanks to Doctor Ye’s acupuncture. He is incredible and truly talented.“I’m a naturally cheerful person and am back to my usual self. They do wonderful work at the clinic in Belvoir Road and we are lucky to have them on our doorstep.”“They get down to the root of the problem and spend time talking to you and explaining the treatment that is right for you. The needles don’t hurt at all. “I have booked in for another batch of sessions as I’m getting such brilliant results.”Everyone deserves the best chance of feeling better, so if you are suffering, call the clinic on01530 810888.

The next General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will be held on Friday 15th November.

Special guests at this event will be the acoustic duo Steve and Carol Robson who perform under the name “Fool’s Gold”. They will be presenting their show “Beat the Drum” which was originally produced for Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion. Beat the Drum is a commemoration of WWI, examining the conflict through the true story of Durham miner, Michael Heaviside VC. Michael Heaviside was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the Battle of Arras in 1917.

A Fool’s Gold show is rooted in music but is much more than just a concert performance. Their shows use live music, story and projected visuals to weave a fascinating story, so appropriate in this month of remembrance.

Whitwick and District U3A is a thriving and friendly organisation for retired people with a wide variety of Interest Groups. All the learning and social activities are run on a self-help basis and enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere. The monthly General Meetings provide an ideal opportunity to chat to existing members and see the options available. As the U3A is non-political and non-religious, all are welcome.

To find out more, including details of the Christmas General Meeting on 20th December when the speaker will be John Whitehead, please visit www.whitwicku3a.org.uk. The General Meetings are held at St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL; please come along at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start.

Here’s a reminder, and the good news is that it’s not too late! So why would you decide to have one?

Studies show consistently that flu vaccination protects the individuals who have them. It also helps the community because good uptake of flu jabs prevents the virus from spreading as fast and as widely as it would otherwise do.

In the most vulnerable groups of people flu can kill, so GP surgeries are offering free vaccination to eligible patients. These include patients with:- COPD, bronchitis, emphysema or asthma- heart, kidney or liver disease- any history of stroke or TIA- diabetes- lowered immunity as a result of disease or medical treatment, such as

steroid medication or cancer treatment.

It is also free if you are:- pregnant- over 65 - a carer - a child aged 2 or 3.

GP practices are still providing vaccination, and if you’re not eligible for free jabs you can still get yours at the chemist’s for a small fee. In addition, primary schools are providing free vaccination for all children aged 4 to 11, and it is given to children and young people up to 17 as a nasal spray rather than a jab.

So don’t delay as the flu season is on its way!

IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD YOUR FLU JAB YET...

Ward: Hermitage (Elected 2019) My father was born in Loughborough and proudly survived a visit to London during the Blitz, being one of 9 children in a school as the bombs fell (the local children having been evacuated). He survived, met my mother and I was born. They retired to Whitwick and after a few visits my wife and I decided Whitwick was a great place to live and bring up our children. We have lived here for the past 25 years, enjoying a totally different way of life. The people are so friendly. My two sons and I have become staunch Leicester City fans. I was honoured to be elected as a parish councillor and intend to do my best in maintaining the values and traditions of the village.

THE PRIDE OF THE FORESTWhen we are not discussing the decidedly autumnal weather, travelling and traffic seem to be up there as a perpetual topic of conversation at the moment. Road works, lane closures, route diversions and the ever-increasing amount of vehicles on our roads are a constant theme of our chats at the Old Station and undoubtedly elsewhere. Thinking about a less congested age prompted this month’s article from Whitwick Historical Group.

The photograph, which was donated to WHG by Mrs M Partridge, features an image from an era when roads were less overcrowded and almost everyone depended upon public transport. It shows one of the buses from the “Pride of the Forest” fleet, a Whitwick-based bus company. The driver, Charles Thomas Mann (generally known as Tom Mann), is the owner of the company and the conductor with the ticket machine is Mr Birkin. Readers familiar with vintage vehicles will recognise that the bus is from Guy Motors of Wolverhampton, an innovative passenger vehicle manufacturer.

The story of Tom Mann and “Pride of the Forest” begins in the early 1920s when Tom and his wife Winifred (aka Winnie) started the bus company. Their base was at the Black Horse pub in Church Lane Whitwick where Winnie’s widowed mother was tenant landlady. In the 1920s buses had become the predominant form of public transport, replacing horse-drawn vehicles and, locally, passenger trains. People travelled by bus to work, for routine expeditions such as shopping, and for social activities. The Manns’ first bus, known as “Little Bus”, was eventually followed by others to give a fleet of seven. There were regular services operating between Coalville, Shepshed, Loughborough and Leicester. Of special interest is that Winnie was the first female bus driver in Leicestershire.

Moreover, Thringstone-born Tom Mann has a remarkable history. Before he and Winnie began the “Pride of the Forest” company, he had endured many horrifying experiences. In WWI, he was sent from France to the Balkans. Here he had to cope with escaping over mountains to Albania whilst existing on very little food. He managed to reach Corfu by means

of a rowing boat and was repatriated to recover.

Tom was sent back to France and the Somme where he was wounded, suffered from the effects of mustard gas and shell-shock. After lying in a shell-hole for three days, he was rescued and treated in hospitals in France, Leicester and Broom Leys but he had lost his hearing. He was discharged from the army as medically unfit for further service in 1918. Tom was only twenty-one years old. He and Winnie married later that year.

As a successful bus operator, Tom Mann became Chairman of the East Midlands Motor Omnibus Proprietors Association. Whilst holding this position, he presented a clock which was mounted in Shepshed Bull Ring. He retired in 1934. The “Pride of the Forest” business and its route operating licences were sold to Midland Red.

In an age of multi-car families, it is difficult to imagine the impact that small local transport companies had on improving lifestyles for ordinary people not that many decades ago. If you would like to look at more similar images or share some of your own, please call in at the Old Station where volunteers will be happy to see you.

The story begins with my great great grandfather, Thomas Ward. Thomas moved to Whitwick from Heather in 1863 with his wife Elizabeth. He rented the house that stood on the current shop frontage from Sarah Bonnet (his sister in law) and established a grocery shop. They had a daughter, Emily. By the age of five, Emily was travelling around the area collecting the rents from the houses they owned around Whitwick and Coalville. Emily took over the running of the shop as her mother’s health began to fail. Elizabeth died around 1892 and the following year Emily married Storer Whitcraft West. After their wedding Thomas bought a larger shop and moved to Leicester Road.

In 1896, the Bonnet family put several Silver Street properties up for sale. Thomas bought the two old houses (24 and 26) along with a plot of land to the right of the pub (as far down as the constitutional club) as well as the Kings Arms pub. Emily and Storer had four daughters Evelyn, Gladys, Mabel and Lucy.

The Shop on Leicester road was run within the family for many years; eventually being run by the Bakewell family (Evelyn West married Albert Bakewell). Albert was blinded in an accident at a Coalville foundry and they took over the Shop when Emily and Storer retired. The Shop was demolished when the bottom of Leicester Road was altered.

Gladys married Aubrey Vivian Rawson Colledge in 1932. For a wedding gift Storer had numbers 24 and 26 Silver Street built. It was originally designed as one big house, but was split into two before completion to provide a rental income. Aubrey and Gladys moved into number 24 Silver St and rented number 26 out to tenants. They had two children, John Ivor West Colledge and Janet Mary Colledge. In 1943 Aubrey and Gladys purchased a three-quarter acre plot of land behind the house and between 1947 and 1953 they built eight glasshouses, which eventually became Colledge and Son Nurseries. Aubrey was conscripted into the RAF during World War II but was released in 1946 due to ill health. When his health improved he tried quite a few different jobs but, as he had already started building the larger glass houses, in 1949 he decided to start his own business. In 1950 he built a lean-to glasshouse on the side of number 24

Silver Street from which he sold green-groceries and flowers and Colledge’s was born!

From 1953 Colledge’s had a stall on Coalville market and also established a van sales round around the village of Whitwick. John Colledge married Jean Waltham at Saint John the Baptist church on the 7th of April 1958.

They had 3 children; myself (Sue), Helen, and Stephen. In 1961, the shop moved into the front room of the house, where it still is today. The front garden was removed when the double yellow lines were put on Silver Street to provide a parking area. John and Jean took over to shop in 1970 when Aubrey and Gladys retired.

Over the years the business had to alter and adapt to changing market conditions. With the opening of large supermarkets we sold fewer foodstuffs. In 1975, when Coalville market moved to the indoor site, Colledge’s gave up the market stall and also the van sales rounds and John went out to work, while Jean continued to run the shop.

In 1979, I came to work full-time with Jean and over the years the shop moved more and more into floristry and after a refit in 1998, finished selling fruit and vegetables altogether. Jean’s health began to fail and I had to do more of the physical work. She retired in 1999, the year of the business’s 50th anniversary and sadly, in December 2016, Jean, the original ‘Flower Lady’ passed away. She is mentioned everyday in the shop and never forgotten.

I took over the shop when Jean retired and this is my 40th year at the helm. During her life, Jean did a massive amount of charity work. Her favourite good cause was Rainbows Hospice. Colledge’s still raise money for Rainbows and we also work closely with Woodstock in Whitwick to support many local good causes.

I now have a great team; Tracy, Suzy and Ellis, who work in the shop with me and Kev is our chief frame maker and ‘holly wreath engineer’, not forgetting John, the ‘Tea Fairy’!

Floristry is our passion and whatever the next challenge is, we are ready to accept it.

This year is our 70th anniversary; quite an achievement for a little family business.

Hospice Hope ‘Summer Poetry Competition’ inspires young poets

Hospice Hope are thrilled to be able to announce the winners from the Summer Poetry Competition for primary school children in North West Leicestershire.

The competition standard was very high, and the judges were all impressed by the range and depth of ideas. The theme of “hope” clearly inspired local children to explore words, rhythms and rhymes in a variety of new and creative ways.

The first prize, which is a Fire 8 HD kids edition, has been awarded to Dexter Mackie – aged 9 for his poem on climate change and hope. The judges were

impressed with his powerful message with head judge Ben Norris commenting: “a fierce and unapologetic poem that is at once damning us and inspiring us to do better”.

Runners up prizes are as follows:

Second prize, a family membership to Conkers, awarded to: Eleanor Nkiru Morse – aged 11

Third prize, a family ticket to the National Space Centre, awarded to: Amelia Miller – aged 7

As part of National Poetry Day celebrations, the top three poems were read out by actors at Century Theatre, Coalville on 3rd October and all shortlisted poems are on display at Coalville Library until 31st October.

Well done to all our entrants for entertaining our wonderful judges with such beautiful, thoughtful poetry. Thanks also to the panel of judges: Ben Norris, Victoria Barton, Susan Browne, Gregory Heath and Rad Gregory.

Think of the beautiful sea side

Would you feel sad if the fish diedBy time it is twenty fifty

They’ll be more rubbish than fish in the sea

Think of the United KingdomHow would you feel if there was none?

We put so much dirt in the airThe ice caps are melting, it’s so unfair

Think of the beautiful sea side

How would you feel if it survivedYou can help undo the damage

Recycle more or we will all vanish

Think of the tropical junglesWhat if there were no animals

Stop poaching it is cruel and meanCarry on these creatures won’t be seen

Stop think and save could change our lives

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…

As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined, italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories

The Ruffle toy lay hidden in the grass underneath the slide in the park, having Fallen out of the little boy’s pocket. The sounds in the park slowly faded as it began to grow dark and turned cold. The grass soon became damp - Ruffle wished that the little boy would return to find him. All of a sudden a snuffling sound broke the silence as a hedgehog shuffled up to Ruffle. The hedgehog stopped briefly to have a sniff of Ruffle before carrying on, anxious to return to its cosy den, especially if the cold weather was to return.

Ruffle lay in the grass for a short while longer until he felt a larger wet nose sniffing him. It reminded him of Ruffle the Airedale’s nose on the first day he was given to Eric’s grandson, Jack. But this nose didn’t belong to a dog but to a fox! The Fox stayed a while sniffing all the interesting smells on Ruffle before continuing on his night time rounds.

Finally, morning arrived, and Ruffle heard voices not far from his grassy bed. Then a large white ball landed in the grass next to him Underneath the slide. A group of older children were on the park playing football. An older girl ran over to fetch the ball then suddenly spotted Ruffle in the grass. She bent down to examine the little soft toy.

‘Come on Jo!’ shouted one of the other children. ‘It’s your free kick.’

The girl picked Ruffle up and put him into her coat pocket, zipping it up to keep Ruffle safe. Once the game had finished, the girl walked home bouncing the football skilfully in front of her. When she arrived home she was immediately Greeted by a bouncing bundle of fur as her new puppy ran up to meet her. Bending down to fuss the puppy, the girl remembered the little toy in her pocket. She unzipped her pocket and took Ruffle out.

‘Here you go Spike! I found this new toy for you!’ She held the toy Ruffle out for the puppy who took the toy between his small teeth and ran over to his bed. But Spike was gentle with his toys and didn’t bite too hard into Ruffle but Instead enjoyed throwing him gently into the air then pouncing on Ruffle as he landed. It wasn’t long before Spike had worn himself out and settled down in his bed, Ruffle tucked in beside him.

Walk time should be very exciting for any dog but especially for a puppy just starting to explore the great outdoors that Lies beyond

their front door! Spike always tried to take a toy out for his walks but his young owner usually spotted the toy before the front door was opened. However, this time Spike managed to sneak Ruffle out with him and his owner didn’t notice a very pleased looking Spike trotting along on his lead with Ruffle between his teeth.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and so walks are the very opportunity to discover and investigate an array of odours. One particular scent was So wonderful that Spike needed his full attention and so let the toy Ruffle fall from his mouth onto the grass verge. Spike’s young owner decided that Spike should move along and called his name with the lure of a tasty treat. Forgetting Ruffle, Spike happily took the treat and continued along at his owner’s side, leaving Ruffle lying in the grass. Too late, the puppy realised that he had left his new toy behind…

Throughout that day Numerous dogs found Ruffle and carried him a little further along the road before they lost interest in the toy and dropped him. By the end of the day Ruffle was no longer on the same road that Spike usually walked along. Then an older couple out walking found Ruffle lying on the path and gently fixed him by his red collar to a fence so that he was safe from inquisitive dogs but could be easily seen by whoever had mislaid him.

Ruffle watched the couple walk away and waited for his Next adventure…

Conserving Holly Hayes WoodThe story continues...The Trustees of Friends of Holly Hayes Wood, Whitwick are complying with the wishes of the original grant providers for the future of Holly Hayes Wood and are pleased to announce their collaboration with Coalville Education Partnerships, who have taken over the management of the ancient woodland.

A tenancy agreement is in place and protects the site for the long term with the aim of continuing the work of the trust in conserving the stand, habitat and wildlife communities whilst retaining the policy of open access for all visitors.

CEP Ltd is extending its services to deliver training for youngsters in land-based studies and business on the site with additional curriculum supporting courses for schools, experience days for private guests and events for local residents.

Holly Hayes Wood is owned in trust for the people of Whitwick and the requirement for sensitive, expert direction of work within the site matches CEP’s ethos of care for the natural environment and dedication to recycling and re-use of waste.

The sustainable management of the woodland for wildlife and craft materials will be enhanced with the addition of an organic garden for the production of food – to be served through CEP’s community kitchen and for distribution to families.

Planning permissions and consent is being sought from the Local Authority and Environment Agency to make improvements to access and facilities to ensure all members of the community can visit

the site, including those with special learning needs and alternative mobility requirements.

Both organisations are fully committed to ensuring the success of the project which will safeguard the heritage of future generations with valid training and secure employment long into the future.

I used to love watching the TV programme Sharpe. This had probably something to do with the cast, but it got me really interested in the Napoleonic wars in which the UK was involved between 1803 and 20 November 1815. As a result of this interest, Friends of Thringstone decided to look at historical army records to see what came up for people born in Thringstone. Whilst most people who were born in the village stayed in the immediate area and brought up their own families, we found a list of people, including some who served in the Napoleonic wars. Were any of these your ancestors?

William Bradley enlisted during the time of the Napoleonic wars, joining up in 1804. We know from records that he was in the 59th Regiment of Foot. He was discharged on 24 March 1811 just prior to returning to Europe, after a stay in hospital in York, due to a ‘delicate but incurable health issue’ which prevented him from continuing to serve. At that time he was in his early 20s, and was tall for the time at close to 6 feet in height, had dark brown hair, hazel eyes and a fair complexion and by trade was a framework knitter. Another man known to have served in the Napoleonic wars was Thomas Cooper, who served in the 1st Battalion of the 45th Regiment of Foot as a corporal. He was a stocking weaver, who enlisted at the age of 22 and served for 2 years and 38 days before being injured by shotgun at the battle of Busaco, which took place on 27 September 1810. This was part of a battle between Wellington’s Anglo-Portuguese forces and the French under Napoleon, who were defeated.

William Mason was in the 1st battalion of the 45th regiment of foot. He served from 23 May 1805 until 24 January 1814 and his discharge came about because he was shot by a musket in the left foot whilst serving with Wellington in Vitoria in Spain. This battle, taking place in 1813, saw the British, Portuguese and Spanish army under Wellington break the French army under King Joseph Bonaparte and Marshal Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, eventually leading to victory in the Peninsular War. He was 27 years of age, a framework knitter by profession, and was 5 feet 6 inches tall, had brown hair and grey eyes.

Other men from Thringstone who served in the army include James Cooper who was born in 1805, and served with the 58th Foot in Ceylon and for 11 years in the East Indies. He joined up in Sevenoaks, Kent in 1823 at the age of 18, and went on to serve for 21 years and 174 days before being discharged. Said upon discharge to be a man of most exemplary character, he seemed to go from private to corporal and back before being promoted to sergeant. He was 5 feet eight in height, had light brown hair, blue eyes, a sallow complexion and was intending to return to being a labourer at the time of his discharge.

William Cooper, who may have been a relation to James, joined the Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards in Cirencester on 23 April

1831. He was 20 years and 6 months old when he enlisted, and received a bounty of £2 10 shillings for so doing, a considerable amount of money at the time. He served for nearly 14 years and was discharged after being diagnosed with consumption. He was of good character and another tall man for the time at close to 5 feet 11 inches. He had light brown hair, grey eyes and fair complexion and had been a wheelwright prior to enlisting.

Other men had an interesting time of it, according to records, and certainly ventured far around the world. We have Sergeant Major William Stinson of the 48th Regiment of Foot, a shoemaker by trade, who joined up on 16 February 1835 in Canterbury. He twice he went to court martial, once for desertion, and then returned to serve in Crimea, Malta, Gibralter, Ionian Islands (Greece), India, West Indies and East Indies, before leaving on aged 43 on 15 September 1860. He had a good conduct badge prior to being promoted to Sergeant Major in 1857 and received 2 medals including a Crimea medal with clasp for being part of the Crimean battle at Sebastapol. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, dark hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion, and had a small scar on his right wrist.

Others we have discovered include William King, a gunner and driver in the Royal Artillary, serving with both the 8th and 10th battalions. He was discharged in September 1850 because of breathing issues. Originally a labourer, he joined up on 9 January 1846 and appeared 4 times in the defaulter book for minor offenses for which he was duly punished. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had brown hair, hazel eyes and a dark complexion. It is unclear where he served during his 4 years of service. We also have John Potter a framework knitter who, aged 20, and with the 17th foot, deserted in 1836, and finally we have Samuel Whaite, a framework knitter, who originally served in the 32nd and 33rd Regiment of Foot, joining up in Nottingham on 22 July 1825 aged 17. Upon discharge on 10 July 1848, he claimed a pension of 10 pence a day (equivalent to around £3.88 a day now) and said he intended to reside in London Central West. He served for over 22 years in North America and Canada, seemed to be promoted then demoted, and is recorded as being paid 2 pence a day from 1 July 1840. He volunteered on 1 June 1841 to serve permanently in North America which saw him transfer to 14th Regiment. He received 2 distinguishing marks on 11 September 1843 and had been deprived of both of these by 1848. On 1 May 1847 he transferred to the Reserve Battalion of the 20th Regiment when serving in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was 5 feet 6 and a quarter inches, with brown hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion.

ASHBY AND COALVILLE LIONSSanta’s sleigh runs 2019It’s coming up to that magical time for children and theLions are busy preparing to bring lots of enjoyment to theyoungsters. As for many years, we have arranged to bringSanta to various locations in Coalville and Ashby in the runup to Christmas. (Santa’s magic reindeer only fly onChristmas Eve!)

This year there will be some new routes and some of the old routes have been altered slightly. It has become increasingly difficult to manoeuvre thesleigh around new estates with tight cul-de-sacs and a lot of parked cars, so with the children’s safety being paramount, we may not get the sleighright outside your door, but our members and helpers will knock to let you know the sleigh is nearby, so listen out for the Christmas music, watchfor the lights and have your boots ready by the door! The main aim of this project is for the children to enjoy talking to Santa and no payment isnecessary but we will, of course, have our collecting buckets and this is one of our main fund-raising events of the year. Every penny collected will gotowards helping those in need in the local community and further afield.

These are the planned routes and approximate times, and we will do all in our power to stick to them but bear in mind that this is a voluntary servicerun by helpers who give up their evenings throughout December, sometimes in terrible weather. Even Santa might struggle if the weather conditionsare severe!

Helen Burrows, Chris Simmons and Jonny Ward from Ibstock, Ellistown and Thringstone respectively, with friends Lucy, Phil and Matt from Grantham took part in the latest series of Channel 5’s Great Model Railway Challenge.

We were part of the ‘Muddle and Go Nowhere’ Team. Named after the nickname of the Midland and Great Northern Railway that ran from Norfolk, through Lincolnshire and into Leicestershire,

Shot and recorded in June at Sir William McAlpine’s country estate, Fawley Hill near Henley on Thames, fifteen teams competed against each other to be crowned the best railway modellers of 2019.

The participating teams were given 24 hours to build a model railway to a specified theme. The heats were split over three days; two ten hour days and one four hour day, after which the final judging followed. The final judging took place in front of an audience of friends and family.

The team were not surprised that they did not win the heat, as both other teams were

much more experienced and competent modellers. They were however surprised to be announced as the winners of the ‘wild card entry’ to the next stage of the challenge.

‘Blockbusters’ was the next theme to be tackled and our chosen blockbuster was the ‘Bond’ films. Another three days for blood (quite literally, I must be more careful with power tools), sweat and tears ensued, but not quite as stressful as the initial heat.

At this point I need to say thank you to Halls

of Ibstock who supplied some unwanted packaging that was turned into landscape and bridges. Another local supplier was Scale Model Scenery of Hugglescote, who supplied scenic parts for our layouts.

Only two of the three teams could go through and again we were up against professional grade modellers, not a bunch of shambling ‘muddlers’. Everything at the judging stage worked perfectly, however we couldn’t match the creative and technical builds of our competitors. The final judgement was inevitable, however, for six friends who had been hastily assembled as a team against considerably more experienced modellers, we thought we had done ‘ok’.

We thoroughly enjoyed the television experience and would recommend it to other would-be modellers, but be prepared for it not being quite what you see on television.

Both layouts are available to view at a new model shop in Grantham, ‘Rocket Railways’ or visit www.MGNR.uk for more information and behind the scene snaps.

Do you break promises to yourself or neglect your self-care? Do you find it hard to put yourself first? Believe it or not self-love is your secret weapon to living a happy, fulfilling life.

Why do we find self-love difficult?Sometimes, we often struggle with feeling worthy enough and allow negativity and insecurities to create a cloud over us. This is because various moments of our lives shape who we are. Have you ever felt betrayed by a parent who wasn’t there for you? Did you ever had friends who treated you cruelly or had mean siblings? From our experiences we create narratives about our own self worth and how we fit into the world. We condition ourselves to feel unworthy and not good enough. I haven’t even touched upon social media or the media yet as unfortunately my word count for this article simply won’t stretch! These platforms (including adverts) subtly and sometimes blatantly tell us we aren’t good enough!

How can we love ourselves?Luckily, we can fix our perception of ourselves and get rid of the negative self-image. Simply, you have to be willing to love yourself! And you can forget about thinking this is selfish! When we love and put ourselves first, we are better equipped and in a better mental state to look after and care for others.

Here are a few tips:

1. Regardless of others - you are worthy! - Did your partner cheat? Did somebody wrong you? In both of these situations, the other person is the one with the problem. We’re so used to thinking poor action, by others, is a result of us and linked to our worth and value. Remember, most people act based on the thoughts and perceptions they hold. When you find yourself questioning your value; do a quick shake of the head and say “NO! I am worthy regardless of what anyone else thinks, says or feels”.

2. Fix the mental movie in your mind – We choose the thoughts and beliefs we pay attention to and create the narrative of our lives. We need to tame our emotions and have so much love for ourselves that we even love the negative parts.

3. Change your false beliefs – thoughts create beliefs which create action. It has been scientifically proven that the more we think something the more our brains physically strengthen the neural connection. Think positive things about yourself; even when you are experiencing negative emotions – be kind!

4. Write affirmations – you can rewire a false belief by using the power of affirmations; which are positive statements about yourself that you say to yourself daily either in your head or out loud; for example, I AM…(followed by something positive) a great mum, good at my job, clever, happy etc. The trick is to affirm what you want to believe (future) not necessarily what you believe now (present).

5. See the positives – grab yourself a little notebook and write three positive things or things that have made you smile that day before you go to bed and notice how good you begin to feel!

6. Do things just for you; things you enjoy; because you want to; because you can! – taking the time out for yourself may just be the thing you need. Doing it just for you because you want to is a great way to treat yourself and start the process of loving yourself. Especially if you always do things for others and have a busy life!

7. Focus on the vision and LOVE YOURSELF! – Learning to love yourself is tough at first but a truly gratifying journey. Commit to be willing to love yourself even through the tough times. Allow yourself to get up and try again; start afresh and keep following the steps listed above. They may seem too easy or too small but believe me; they will make a powerful difference!

The charity performance of Mozart by Candlelight held at the centre on 20 October, and brought there by Theatre Productions Europe Ltd., raised in excess of £750 for the centre’s charity. The event was world class in standard, with the quality of the performance, costumes and staging exceptional, and the centre would like to thank Stephen Leatherland, the orchestra and the singers for a night to remember. Another charity event from the same producers is coming to the centre on 26 November and entitled Christmas Crooners. With tributes to Dean Martin, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, this also promises to be a great night out for locals to enjoy.
