Stairlift superheroes step into action!Candor Care are continuing to give back to the local community by offering a donation of a reconditionedstairlift every month to someone to help improve their mobility.

The Coalville-based stairlift company launched their refurbished stairliftdonation scheme in January this year to help people in times of desperateneed. Having a stairlift installed can provide a comfortable solution on a shortor long term basis and give someone the freedom and independence back intheir home. Although not a huge expense, a stairlift is still a cost which somepeople may struggle to afford. After donating 2 stairlifts in 2018 as part of acompetition during the popular Heather Scarecrow Festival, Candor decidedto donate a stairlift every month throughout 2019 to someone that will reallybenefit.

Candor Care will be donating a fully refurbished stairlift to someone in needevery month throughout 2019. To register your interest for a friend or familymember that might be in need, email – [email protected] or senda message through Candor Care’s facebook page.

Terms and conditions apply and all applications are given careful considerationbefore response. Candor Care can only offer this for straight staircases with notwists or turns.

Preparations are well underway for 2019 Bosworth Medieval Festival – which this year promises to bebigger and better than ever before.

There are loads of new attractions to keep the whole family entertained at the Festival, whichthis year takes place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August. New entertainments for this yearinclude period falconry displays – both flying and static - medieval cooking demonstrations andfood tasting, a roving Jester, the King’s Executioner and a medieval puppet show. There willbe events taking place in the two arenas for most of the weekend and a new, mounted skill atarms display which puts the horses and armoured riders through their paces.

As well as two battle re-enactments on each day– including a 20-minure re-creation of the Battleof Bosworth on both afternoons featuringhundreds of re-enactors - there are large living

history encampments to explore, jousting, archery, cannon fire demonstrations, guided tours, author talks, a medieval craft market and loads of exciting fun, hands-on games and competitionsfor children, as well as entry to the award-winning exhibition and free car parking. There will bea range of food stalls offering something to suit every taste and appetite, and the 1485 Tithe Barnrestaurant will also be open for lunches, teas and light refreshments throughout the weekend.

Tickets have been held at the same price as last year and represent even better value for money, as they are valid for the whole weekend. This means that visitors can attend the Bosworth Medieval Festival on either or both days for no extra cost. And with the event running from10am to 5.30pm on both days, that’s a possible 15 hours of entertainment for the entry price! Once through the gates, all events during thetwo days (except talks in the Heritage Room and have-a-go archery) are completely free of charge. Tickets can be booked online atwww.bosworthbattlefield.org.uk or by calling 01455 290429 between 10am and 5pm. Our photograph shows Gypsy Moth, the boat that Francis Chichester used to become the first person to sail single-handedly around the world by the clipper route. Perhaps you are wondering what this tale of the sea has to do with Ellistown?

Sir Francis Chichester, the son of a vicar, attended Marlborough Public School. However, Reverend Chichester was not very happy when Francis came home for Christmas 1918 and at the age of 17 announced he wasn’t returning to school as he wanted an adventure.

Reverend Chichester was so angry that, when he saw a newspaper advert for a farmhand in Leicestershire, he dispatched his wayward son to this farm, where he would work for bed and board and five shillings a week. It is thought that this was Lees Farm on Beveridge Lane, Ellistown and Francis reported that the days were long and the work was hard.

A member of the Historical Society remembers being told this story at school. The children were also told the circumstances of his dismissal, which happened like this; Francis had to take the milk in churns to the station by horse and cart and bring back the empty churns. One day on the return journey another farmhand challenged Francis to a race. Francis agreed and was racing along when his cart hit a large stone overturned and the horse broke free. The horse bolted home, damaged two five bar gates and ended up in the farmer’s garden! Francis ran the two miles to the farm hoping to catch the horse and make repairs to the cart. Waiting for him in the yard was the farmer, who instantly told him to pack up and go. This was just the excuse the farmer had been waiting for, as he was concerned that Francis and his daughter were becoming fond of each other.

There is an account of this in a biography by Anita Leslie. It doesn’t actually mention Ellistown, it just says a farm in Leicestershire. As the children have been told this story, surely it cannot be a coincidence. So, is it true that world famous yachtsman, Sir Francis Chichester, once worked in Ellistown? Does anyone know any more about this? Were you told this story when at Ellistown School? The second photograph, from the 1930’s, shows Lawrence’s garage at the junction of Whitehill Road and Beveridge Lane. The society would like any photos you may have of Beveridge Lane, before the development of the Industrial parks.

C H A R I T Y C H A M P I O N SSue Stanyard visits ‘Hope House’Everyone at Hope House at Griffydam has an interesting day on Mondays, with visitors in the morning and afternoon.

The morning visitor was Sue Stanyard of Lakeside Wills and Financial Services. Sue has visited Hope House on a number of occasions and has offered extremely valuable advice on wills, power of attorney and protective property trusts. This visit was to pass over a very generous donation from Sue of £400. Sue can be seen in the photo shaking hands with Carol Hill, the Care Services Manager at Hope House.

Hope House is the latest service to be opened by registered charity Hospice Hope and is a place specifically for people with life limiting illnesses. It differs from our three Support Cafés in that attendance is only for those with a life limiting illness and by referral. People also stay for the duration of the day, rather than attending on a drop-in basis. People can refer themselves to us (self-referral) or referrals can be made by health and social care professionals, a carer or family member.

Thank you, Sue, we appreciate greatly all of your contribution to Hospice Hope.

Ibstock in Bloom have signed up with TerraCycle for the Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme. Please save and flatten your empty packets from any brand of crisp and leave them in a box at 57 High Street. For every 2 kilos of bags we can raise £2.00. Not a lot, but better than the bags going to landfill or worse still blowing around the streets.

The scheme cannot accept popcorn bags, crisp tubes, Pretzel bags and meat snack bags.

The group are continuing to hold a fortnightly plant stall at the Palace Community morning. Come to the stall for bedding plants, cacti, shrubs and herbs. Dates for July are 13 and 27. Monies raised in 2018 are being used for a planter and bench at the Cemetery, as part of the Parish Council’s refurbishment plans.

Ibstock Community Garden is blooming, but has some plots available for you to grow your own fruit and veg and once a month help out on general tasks around the garden.

If you would like to know more about what is involved contact Janet on 01530 262183 or ask at the Ibstock in Bloom stall.

Ibstock Community Choir go from Strength to StrengthWhat musical treats we have had these last few weeks. On the evening of Wednesday 15th May Ibstock Community Choir performed a charity concert in support of Hospice Hope at the Methodist chapel on Melbourne Road in Ibstock. (The charity holds a community café there every Tuesday afternoon.)

This was followed by a second concert on Thursday 6th June, performed for the Towns Women’s Guild at the Baptist Chapel on Chapel Street, Ibstock in aid of their nominated charity, the Air Ambulance.

On both occasions the Choir were in great voice and, in my opinion, gave their best performances to date. Their repertoire covered an eclectic range from Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’, ‘Samba Ole’ and Hallelujah, finishing with a compilation from the musical ‘Oliver’. Every song was performed with beautiful harmonies and perfect timing, as they sang with great confidence and, when required, gusto. Both audiences were captivated.

If you get the opportunity to go to one of their future concerts, do so. They will be performing their main concert of the year at the Palace Community Centre on the High Street in Ibstock on Saturday, 31st August. Put the date in your diaries for a great musical evening.

Born in 1941, Janice Mee is a lifelong resident of the village of Ibstock. She is not only a great ambassador for the village, but also for the county and the country.

A familiar face around the area, Janice is recognised by many as a loyal supporter of local churches, chapels and community gatherings, often being the one providing the musical entertainment with her lovely singing voice and talent for delivering monologues. Janice served as a long-term member with various local drama and singing groups, including The Coalville Adult School Drama group and The Coalville Amateur Operatics Society (CAOS), often taking the lead role.

But not everyone will be aware that Janice also has a very significant, internationally recognised reputation as a fashion designer and lecturer, specialising in wedding gowns and intimate apparel. Her outstanding array of professional awards include, Fellowship of The Clothing and Footwear Institute, Fellowship of The Textile Institute, Liveryman of the Framework Knitters, Freeman of the City of London and a Council member and Emeritus of the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes (IFFTI). Combining her talents for singing and design, Janice has often provided the entertainment at the IFFTI conferences.

Janice employed her talent for design in her own wedding dress business from 1960 until 2007. Prior to that time she was also a designer for ‘Ladies Pride’, ‘Triumph’, ‘Rowley’s’, ‘Susan Small’ and ‘Marks and

Spencer’s’ etc., etc., among many other well-known brands.

Many local places of education have benefited from her expertise through her many workshops and evening classes. These have been as varied as local schools to Loughborough College of Art and Design and Leicester Polytechnic to holding the post of Head of Contour Fashion and Principal Lecturer at De Montfort University from 1992 until 2007.

Janice’s outstanding talent has been much sought after, both in this country and also internationally. She has given lectures and workshops in the colleges, polytechnics, universities and institutes of Hong Kong, New Delhi, Bangkok, Mumbai, St Petersburg and Sydney to name just a few. Her work has been exhibited widely, again not only locally but much further afield; in such places as Istanbul and St Petersburg. She has sat on fashion judging panels in Russia, China and Latvia.

As well as lecturing and teaching, Janice has written several books and numerous papers on the subject of design and technology. With no plans to retire, she is planning to deliver courses in India in November and will be taking part in the IFFTI conference in South Korea in 2021 on her 80th birthday!

Her work was recognised by Parliament on her retirement from De Montfort University, when she received a letter from the then Minister of Education, Ed Balls, thanking her ‘for her contribution to Fashion Education’.

OPEN EVENINGSTuesday 16th July

Wednesday 24th JulyThursday 1st August

Drop in any time between 6.00pm and 8.00pm

Don’t let thieves get an easy ride. Follow these simple rules to protect your car.

LOCK YOUR VEHICLE

Locking your vehicle, even when filling up or parked on your drive, greatly reduces the possibility of it being targeted by an opportunist thief. Even if you have locked your vehicle, check you haven’t left any windows or the sunroof open. It is actually illegal to leave your vehicle running unattended while you de-ice it or warm it up in cold weather. If someone takes it while it’s left like this, your insurer won’t pay out because you won’t be covered.

KEEP THE KEYS SAFE

Vehicles today are by and large more difficult to steal than ever, unless the thief can access your key or fob to clone them. Keep your keys safe, out of view when at home, and away from your front door. It’s not uncommon for car keys to be stolen from inside your home by thieves fishing for them with a stick and hook through the letterbox. When not in use, keep your electronic car key in a security pouch

to prevent it being scanned by thieves to open and steal your car nearby.

BE AWARE OF CARJACKERS

The fact that you’re in the car isn’t always a deterrent to someone trying to steal it.If your car is stolen, some modern vehicle alarm and tracker systems have the facility to isolate or shut down fuel systems, bringing the vehicle to a halt and leaving the thief high and dry.

PARK RESPONSIBLY

It’s always advisable to avoid parking in dark and secluded areas. It’s worth an extra five or ten-minute walk if it means your vehicle is left in a well-lit and busier street. If possible, always try to park in illuminated and staffed car parks or those with a Park Mark safer parking award.

FIT GOOD IN-CAR SECURITY LOCKS

Bear in mind that built-in steering locks aren’t necessarily thief-proof. Many can be forced and broken. Fitting a Sold Secure steering wheel, gear lever or clutch pedal security

device can give your vehicle added protection.

DOUBLE-CHECK ELECTRONIC LOCKING

Electronic devices can be used to jam the electronic signal from your key fob to lock your vehicle. Always manually check your vehicle has locked before walking away.

If unsure, lock it manually, then scan the immediate area for anyone hanging around. If a potential thief who’s watching feels they’ve been spotted, they’ll probably move off.

BEFORE YOU BUY, CHECK FOR CLONING

Changing the identity of a vehicle, known as vehicle cloning, can be as simple as adding stolen number plates. When buying a vehicle, always check the DVLA V5 document and make sure the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the vehicle is the same as on the document. Party at The Palace in honour of Mr Brian Hall BEMLast month around 80 guests were invited to The Palace at Ibstock to celebrate the award of the British Empire Medal to Mr Brian Hall in honour of his outstanding services to the community. Brian was formally presented with the award by Michael Kapur, Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, at Beaumanor Hall, earlier in the year.

As Brian is practically synonymous with Ibstock Palace, it seemed very fitting that the celebration party should be held there. A series of speakers paid tribute to the vast number of aspects of village life with which Brian has been and continues to be, influential over the years.

To say that Brian has made an impact on the community of Ibstock would be an understatement. With his involvement in The Royal British Legion, The Palace Community Centre, Ibstock Events Group,

Ibstock Community Enterprises, Ibstock Football Club and many other projects during the past decades this recognition and honour is richly deserved.

In his own modest speech Brian was keen to stress that all of these achievements had only been made possible with the support of his family and many other residents of Ibstock and the surrounding area.

The afternoon featured a film presentation showing images from different stages of Brian’s life and some highlights of village events. Brian was presented with an original cartoon created by renowned, local cartoonist, Bill Tidy and a superb buffet was provided by Ibstock’s Old School Tea Rooms, much to the appreciation of the guests.

The Community Voice, (itself housed in Ibstock Business Centre, which is managed by Ibstock Community Enterprises) wish to extend their congratulations and gratitude to Brian, in appreciation of all that he has contributed to the village of Ibstock.

A message from Councillor John Clarke, Ibstock West.

My family and I moved to Ibstock from Shrewsbury about forty years ago. At that time there was still coal mining in the area and Ibstock High Street was well populated with shops. There were four or five butcher’s shops open and seemingly thriving at that time. Socially, we had a working men’s club, the Miner’s Welfare club, a British Legion, cricket club and numerous pubs open and pulling in business.

I remember three electrical shops on the high street virtually next door to each other, Burdett’s, Tommy Underwood’s and Hall’s. The latter owned and run by Brian Hall. Banking facilities were available to the residents of the village.

Gradually one by one many of these shops, pubs and clubs have gone by the wayside. Yet one still remains like a beacon on the High Street, Hall’s of Ibstock. It is testament to Brian Hall that the shop is there on the very corner of the High Street. The shop and many of the facilities, the Palace for one, and functions that take place in the village can be attributed to the energy, drive and determination of one man. Brian Hall.

Now I am the District Councillor for Ibstock West, I have more dealings with Brian than before. I get many telephone calls from residents of my ward. However, there are two telephone callers whose number, when it shows up, I know exactly what they want. One caller is Brian the other my son in Greece. Both want me to assist in some way with a project or search available finance for events. Brian’s calls are never for himself though. It is always something to benefit the village, and for that I must wholeheartedly praise him.

As I said at the beginning there were many shops on the High Street when we moved here and Hall’s, standing at the junction of Chapel Street and High Street, is now as was then, the cornerstone of the village. Without doubt Mr Ibstock, Brian Hall, is now and was then the cornerstone of much of what is good about the village. Congratulations on your well-deserved award of the BEM.

Last year the Festival celebrated its 20th Anniversary in quite some style. The record year raised £9,000 for local groups with a bumper amount of visitors, including a few well known characters from the Star Wars Movies. The icing on the cake came with the

event being awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the Best Outdoor Experience category of the 2018 Leicestershire Tourism and Hospitality Awards. Quite an achievement for an event organised by community volunteers!

So are the voluntary group of Scarecrow Festival organisers resting on their laurels this year, on the assumption they have reached the pinnacle of their achievement? Far from it, galvanised by last year’s amazing success they have revamped their logo, ordered more signs and plan to develop some of the ideas introduced last year as they as they forge ahead to the next decade of Scarecrows.

As well as amazing scarecrows, you can expect inflatable’s, stalls, refreshments, face painting and more, depending on which days you visit. The aim is to raise funds for Village groups whilst providing an affordable day out for visitors. So don’t expect an environment where parents are constantly under pressure to keep spending.

This year’s event will take place from 11am on Sunday 28h July until 6pm on Sunday 4th

August. As always, there will be ample free parking and the popular Tea Room at Heather St John’s Football Club (LE67 2QJ) with additional parking at Heather Village Hall LE67 2RE. Once again local groups and charities have been invited to make use of the Village Hall to raise funds for their organisation whilst also selling Scarecrow guide and providing additional toilet and refreshment facilities. Details of the activities taking place at the Hall each day will be shown in the Festival Guide and announced on the Facebook Page. During the final weekend there will be additional stalls and face painting at the Football Club and maybe a few extra surprises.

Ibstock Historical Society will be displaying photographs showing some of Heather’s past history. Forestry England has created a centenary trail around Horseshoe Lake in Sence Valley Forest Park, and plan to display scarecrows. With so much going on, you may prefer to visit Heather on more than one occasion throughout Scarecrow week and make the most of everything that is going on at a more leisurely pace.

“This is the best Scarecrow Festival yet!”The frequent feedback each year by visitors of Heather Scarecrow Festival.

CAN YOU DIG IT?Volunteer test-pit dig in Market BosworthOn Saturday and Sunday, July 6th and 7th, volunteers will be digging more test pits in Market Bosworth. After the outstanding success of the last two years of the project, when over 50 test pits were dug, this years excavations are on a much smaller scale, with a half dozen pits being strategically located to fill in some of the gaps in areas that haven’t yet been looked at.

Previous digs in 2017 and 2018 have found pottery and artefacts dating from the Neolithic (around 5000 years ago) right up to the present, with archaeologists particularly excited by finds of Anglo-Saxon pottery, which may indicate when Market Bosworth actually became a village, around 1400 years ago.

If you would like to come along and see what Bosworth Links are up to, you will be welcome at the Parish Field over the weekend, where you will be able to watch the diggers at work.

You are three weeks in to the latest fad diet and you’ve lost and stone and a half; you are feeling great and you’ve only been eating egg and grapefruit. So you start to get bored and realise that you can’t go on eating egg and grapefruit or cabbage soup for the rest of your life. So you then go back to your old eating habits and all of that weight you’ve lost is starting to creep back on.

Eventually, you decide to brave the scales and to your shock and dismay you’ve gained an extra 7lbs to when you originally started your diet! Sound familiar? This was me! After years of yo-yo dieting; I have tried them all and although they worked well at first, I just couldn’t maintain it. I later discovered that we have to change the mind and our relationship with food if we are ever going to be successful in a weight loss journey.

When I trained to be a clinical hypnotherapist, I did a weight management course which was great but then I decided to add a few practical tips of my own from all of my experiences with diets, weight loss and

my relationship with food. I now have many clients on my weight management programme; including willing participants from friends and family; including myself. The results I have seen so far are incredible!

What can you expect from weight management hypnosis?

1. A brief overview of the science behind overeating, stress and how our brains have the ultimate power of whether we lose weight or not!

2. Some very simple tips to follow in order to change the way you eat and break any bad habits. (No dieting required!!)

3. Trance – is used in the sessions and you will be given a recording to listen to each night that lowers your stress levels and reinforces positive eating habits.

The Brain: We have two areas of the brain; our conscious, intellectual part and our original primitive part. When we operate from our intellectual brain, we do not need to over-eat and we can control the type and

quantity of food and drinks we consume. The primitive part is command central for overeating and promotes weight gain. The more stressed we are the more we operate from this part of the brain the more we will comfort eat, overeat and gain weight. Stress ramps up the reward value of food, increases hunger and decreases metabolic rate. This area of the brain is also where our comfort eating templates are created.

Tips: The only eating tips I suggest are, 1) Eat when you are hungry, 2) Eat what you want, 3) Eat consciously, 4) STOP as soon as you are full.

Trance: Trance helps to lower stress levels which means you will produce less Cortisol and won’t feel the need to reach for high fat, sugary foods and carbohydrates. The trance will also reinforce positive eating habits and encourages exercise.

Continuing our series of new topical short stories featuring that mischievous rail dog, Ruffle, called ‘Ruffle’s Walks’...

Within each story Ruffle will send a secret word to his readers in the form of underlined, italic capital letters scattered in the text. Once you have found the letters, rearrange them to form a word that is relevant to that month’s story. At the bottom of each story it will tell you how many letters you are looking for. The actual word answer will be shown on the inside back cover. Woof - have fun!

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

‘We have a flower head thief!’ declared Eric as he entered the station hut. ‘Look what I have found AGAIN on the grass in front of my lovely blooms!’

Eric held a handful of Large bright orange and yellow petals to show Ben, the engine driver, who was sitting at the table.

‘But who would want to pick off all the Flower heads and leave the stalks?’ wondered Ben.

Ruffle, who was lying on the rug in front of the station fire, even though it was not alight, lifted his head and looked over at Eric. Eric was obviously Unhappy about something.

‘How are you Going to find out who, or what, is taking them? Whatever it is will see you watching and just wait until you’ve gone,’ said Ben, thinking aloud.

‘I’ve got it!’ cried Eric. ‘I will set up a hide – a camouflaged tent – and sit and wait for them to appear! There’s one in the station garden shed – I’ll use that.’

Ruffle was curious as to what Eric was holding in his hand so decided to get up And follow Eric as he went out of the door and over the tracks to the little station garden. Ruffle lay down again opposite the garden shed doorway whilst Eric went inside. After a lot of noise Eric reappeared holding a large green and brown Canvas bag. He took it over to the flower bed.

Ruffle looked on with interest as Ben joined them and helped Eric to put up the Metal frame then pass the green and brown material over to create a small square tent. They then made sure the ropes fastening it down to the grass were securely positioned. Once the hide was ready, Eric fetched two-fold up chairs And a flask from the station then disappeared inside the hide to join Ben. Ben had made sure that the material covering the mesh window was tied back to give them a perfect view of the flower beds opposite.

Once Eric and Ben had disappeared, Ruffle soon became bored. He got up and had a shake. Ah yes! He would play his favourite game! With a sudden burst of Energy, he raced across the garden and along by the side of the flower beds, grabbing a mouthful of bright Orange and yellow blooms in his mouth as he dashed wildly past.

From somewhere in the depths of the camouflage hide Ruffle heard an astonished cry from Eric.

‘RUFFLE!’

Hermitage FM is the Community Radio Station and Coffee Lounge in Memorial Square, Coalville; a town whose centre has been recognised by the Police and Crime Commissioner as an area vulnerable to crime and has been declared a ‘People Zone’.

The North West Leicestershire Community Safety Partnership has noted that the changing face of crime presents fresh challenges, including new drug-related crimes (e.g. ‘cuckooing) adult and child sexual exploitation, domestic abuse and ideologically driven domestic terrorism.

People vulnerable to abuse in their own home can find it difficult to contact services. They may not know which agency to ring or which number to contact. They may not have access to a working phone or may worry about not having enough credit. Using their own phone, if they have one, can bring a fear being found out and punished by their abuser.

The red telephone box that used to be located on many street corners has for some years been in decline – after all we now have mobile phones.

Most towns now have a phone box which has been preserved. However, Coalville seems to have missed out up to now. Hermitage FM (99.2) has just put that right and now has a fine example of a K6 box, which is being restored

by station engineers and volunteers, in front of their premises in Memorial Square. The work will take several months and this symbol of ‘Britishness’ will stand on the edge of Coalville’s conservation area.

Information displays about community safety will be sourced from the North West Leicestershire Community Safety Partnership and the Police. Ongoing free telephone access to the relevant organisations will be funded recurrently by the station’s charitable arm, Carillon Radio.

The project will enable people without safe access to a phone the means to contact agencies who can help them. The project will give people who are at risk of abuse confidence

that they can call for help safely. It will give a clear message to people living in Coalville’s People Zone that the community cares about their welfare.

The project has been supported by the Police and Crime Commissioners Prevention Fund, NWLDC and JB Tool Hire.

Red Phone Box for Coalville

St John the Baptist church at Heather in Leicestershire has received a confirmed grant of £169,800 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the ‘Tower Crusade at Heather’ project, it was announced today.

Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the project aims to do urgent repair work to the church tower and to encourage a wide range of heritage activities. Work will start this summer and be accompanied by heritage activities for local school children and communities.

The project aims to carry out essential repair work to the 14th century tower and, together with Ibstock Historical Society and Heather school, produce history and heritage trails both for adults and children. There will be opportunities to learn craft skills and emergency First Aid, as well as finding out about lead-casting and conservation work. Young people can also learn about the fascinating history of the church and its links with the Knights of St John by using the children’s trail or through fun sessions ‘Night with a Knight’.

St John the Baptist is a medieval church set in the heart of the village of Heather in Leicestershire. Built on the site of an earlier chapel of the knights of St John Hospitaller (forerunners of the modern St John Ambulance), the first recorded priest was Thomas in 1220, and the first four priests are believed to have been priors of the order who lived at their preceptory on the site of the manor house next door.

Commenting on the award, Revd Patty Bailey (project manager) said, “We’re delighted that this project can go ahead, thanks to National Lottery players. The church is a focal point in the village and it has a fascinating history, so it’s great to think we will be able to secure its future for generations to come.”

Well, so far this year we have seen record numbers at our monthly car rallies, a really successful canal festival, run by the Ashby Canal Trust and a super busy Easter weekend. Even though the recent spell of bad weather has affected our June car rally, it has not stopped people enjoying the museum and boat rides! People have braved the rain to enjoy the unique views you get from one of our cruises aboard our boat, the Joseph Wilkes.

This summer is shaping up to one of our busiest yet! Throughout the summer holidays we will be open every day except Fridays, with boat trips running, including the ever popular 45-minute lunchtime cruise (places can be pre-booked in advance). We are also looking

forward to hosting several massive events. Kicking off on August 2nd, we are having an outdoor cinema. Although the evening showing of Bohemian Rhapsody is sold out, the afternoon family friendly showing of The Greatest Showman still has tickets available (at time of writing).

We then welcome the classic cars for a whole day on Sunday 11th August. A chance to see some truly awesome machines next a key piece of industrial history. Food is available all day with the museum and boat open as usual.

The Moira Folk Festival returns from the 16th-18th August, celebrating all things folk. Tickets are on sale now but there will be free events on throughout the weekend.

There are other events in the pipeline, so please keep an eye out on our website and Facebook for more information.
