Last month’s quiz answer... and winner! Many of our readers were able to correctly identify last month’s mystery landmark as The Grace Dieu Viaduct at Thringstone. This disused viaduct formed part of the Charnwood Forest Railway. It takes it name from the nearby ruins of Grace Dieu Priory and the brook that it crossed.

This month’s prize has been won by Hayley & Sean Noone and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Jodie and Sam from Sence Accounting (see their advert on page 12).

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

Fooling about for April! Can you spot our spoof? It’s that time of year again, when weird headlines appear in newspapers and strange goings-on are reported on the television, radio and social media; spaghetti growing on trees, left-handed beef-burgers and flying penguins to name just a few famous spoofs. It’s the month for April fool jokes and here at The Community Voice we like to join in the fun.

If you spot a story in this month’s issue that makes you go ‘‘hhmmmm….?’’, it just might be our contribution to this month’s madness! Send or telephone in your name and contact details, together with the headline of our spoof story, to the Community Voice office. The first correct answer drawn out of the ‘Community Voice Hat’ will be a prize winner. No fooling about that!

Continuing our series of new topical short stories featuring that mischievous rail dog, Ruffle, called ‘Ruffle’s Walks’...

Within each story Ruffle will send a secret word to his readers in the form of underlined, italic capital letters scattered in the text. Once you have found the letters, rearrange them to form a word that is relevant to that month’s story. At the bottom of each story it will tell you how many letters you are looking for. The actual word answer will be shown on page 23. Woof - have fun!

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Ruffle’s walks – Spring cleaningRuffle was bored. He had not long had breakfast but already his tummy felt empty so he needed something to take his mind off food. Ruffle decided to squeeze through the open gate and walked along by the side of the train Tracks to the little station in the hope that Eric might be cooking bacon.

As he arrived at the station he could see quite a Few people all busy around or in the green steam engine that was standing patiently at the platform. Ruffle saw Eric who was near the large steel wheels of the train holding an oil can with a long spout. Ruffle began to scamper round Eric and gave a little bark. This startled Eric who was concentrating on oiling the intricate parts of the wheels.

‘Ruffle! You’ve made me spill oiL all over the wheels. Off you go – I haven’t time for a game this morning. We need to get the train cleaned, ready for the new season’s timetable.’

Ruffle stopped, crouching down with his front paws on the floor, his tail wagging in the air. Eric turned back round to continue with his job so Ruffle decided to go over to Ben. Ben was busy polishing the brass on the engine so that it gleamed in the sunlight. As soon as Ben put the polishing cloth On the floor, Ruffle sprang and grabbed it. He jumped about shaking the cloth, hoping to encourage Ben to chase him. But Ben was too busy.

‘Ruffle! Drop the cloth! Come on – I haven’t got time to play games. I’m busy!’

Ruffle dropped the cloth and watched as Ben picked it up then continued polishing the brass pipes that Ran along the length of the engine.

Ok, thought Ruffle, I will go and look for Samantha inside the carriages. He soon found her Mopping the carriage floors to make them shiny and clean. The sight of the mop being pushed and pulled across the floor was too much for Ruffle and he leapt, seizing the wet cotton hair with his teeth.

‘Ruffle!’ shouted Samantha, Annoyed. ‘Let go of my mop! I’m trying to clean the floors ready for the first train ride tomorrow. Go on – off you go.’ She gave Ruffle a gentle shove on his bottom with the wet mop.

Ruffle slowly jumped out of the carriage onto the Platform.

‘Ruffle!’ shouted Eric. ‘Come here – look what I’ve got for you to keep you out of mischief!’

In his hand Eric held a large juicy bone. Ruffle took it carefully in his mouth and settled himself down next to one of the benches. Perhaps Spring cleaning wasn’t too bad after all!

®Spring is a good time to clean your bikes and outside toys to make sure everything is working properly. But watch out in case your polishing cloth suddenly disappears…

Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 8 letters. The answer is on page 23.

All these decades later, Whitwick Historical Group still has enquiries from descendants who wish to learn details of what happened during the catastrophe. Occasionally, they bring Disaster-related items into the Old Station or along to events.

This month’s photograph shows a decorated memorial to William C Moon of Swannington, one of the victims. This framed memorial was given to the Group by one of William’s grandsons. William Moon was a “stallman” in No. 5 Pit and was one of the 42 men underground that night. The shift had started at 9pm on Monday, 18th April, his wife’s 33rd Birthday. William’s close neighbour in Station Row, Benjamin Wileman, was on the same shift; they may have walked to the Colliery together. Neither was to see their homes or families again.

A stallman’s main task was to extract coal but no coal was drawn that night. It is probable that William was busy with either preparations for the next day shift or repair work. It seems likely that he was working with another collier and other teams were reasonably close. Related to surface features, he was working beneath Hugglescote. The colliers had walked a distance of over a mile from the bottom of the mine shaft to their stalls.

The cause of the Disaster was a fire, known as a “gob fire”, which broke out by the main roadway leading to the working areas and was fuelled by timbers lining the roof and sides of the roadway. With the exception of two men, the colliers were on the wrong side of the fire. They were trapped. Five colliers survived by crawling beneath the fire just

before the roof fell. Most were overpowered by smoke and killed by carbon monoxide but a huge fall of rocks buried several miners. The bodies of these have never been recovered. William Moon, aged 32, was one of these unfortunate men.

Whilst the horrors of the situation underground developed, crowds of people, including wives and families, gathered around the pit head to wait for news. Of the married men killed that night, five left wives who were pregnant, including William’s wife, Clara. Her son, William Curtis Moon, was born exactly three months after his father’s death. It is his son who donated the memorial to WHG. Without a body, there was to be no funeral and no grave for the family to visit. Clara already had other children, although several died in infancy. She never married again.

Although nothing remains of Whitwick Colliery on the surface, the family histories of those involved in this event reveal much about that different age. A comprehensive account of the Whitwick Colliery Disaster is told in the Group’s publications, “Banded Together” Parts 1 and 2. The focus of Part 2 is the families, including William Moon’s, and what became of them.

CHARITY CONCERT AT CHARLES BOOTH CENTREA charity concert recently held at Thringstone’s newly named Charles Booth Centre (formerly the Thringstone House Community Centre) raised in excess of £200 for the centre.

The string quartet, Giocoso, performed music by Haydn and Beethoven to an appreciative audience in the main hall.

Centre trustee, Mike Statham, described it as ‘…..a delightful evening of musical entertainment when professional musicians, ‘The Giocoso Quartet’, played to a well attended audience. One of our aims for the future is to make the centre a venue for first class musical entertainment across a wide variety of music for all tastes’

This event was the first of a wealth of diverse and interesting evenings that are being planned by the centre organisers for the forthcoming months, which will included music and comedy.

For more information about upcoming events at the Charles Booth Centre see their events diary on page 5 or visit www.charlesboothcentre.org.uk

The children and staff of New Swannington Primary School had great fun celebrating World Book Day on the 9th March. They dressed up as a characters from their favourite books and held a celebration assembly, where each classed shared a book that they enjoy. They raised £90 for Book Aid.

News from your Parish Council

New activities at Park Hall?

This has been a busy time at Park Hall with one of the groups being so popular they have had to move on to larger premises. So you can’t do Line Dancing anymore at Park Hall but you can try these instead: Adult Drama Classes on Monday evenings Tiny Talk Baby Signing-for babies/ toddlers on Tuesday mornings Yoga Bellies on Tuesday nights – relaxing time for pregnant mums to be Yoga on Wednesday nights – popular class continues as before (and you don’t need to be pregnant for this one)

See our website for details

What do you think is important for Whitwick? Have you ever attended a parish council meeting to say what is important to you? Near the start of meetings there is an opportunity to ask your questions– that is why we are now looking at how many grit bins there are in the village and if some extra ones can be bought. If you can’t come to a meeting, contact a parish councillor to tell them instead. In May we are reviewing our priorities at a special visioning meeting.

Wonders of Whitwick – tell us more (Email [email protected] with your good news)

Thank you to the kind people who have registered to be voluntary snow wardens. We are still taking names so if you want to find out more please contact the Community Office.

COUNCIL MEETINGS COMING UP ARE 19 APRIL, 10 & 17 MAY HELD ON THURSDAYS AT 7.00PM AT PARK HALL, WHITWICK PARK, NORTH STREET, LE67 5HB

The Parish Council has a variety of powers and duties that govern the way it operates. It is the first tier of local government and different in some ways from the two other tiers of government that you will also know – North West Leicestershire District Council and Leicestershire County Council who have more duties. The parish council has a few duties that it has to perform but optional powers that it can choose to use. That means if the law allows us to, you can help your parish councillors shape the future of Whitwick in a different way.

WE CAN’T DO: Gritting of roads and filling of the grit bins. This is done by the County Council – use their website to find out more.

Whitwick and District U3A will hold its monthly General Meeting on Friday 20th April. The U3A offers companionship through learning and social activities to retired people. Members are involved in a wide range of Interest Groups, all based on the self-help ethos.

Most hobbies and interests are catered for and new Groups set up as demand arises. At the General Meeting, Group Leaders and others will be on hand to answer questions and pass on information about our thriving U3A. Everyone is assured of a warm welcome. The U3A is a non-political and non-religious organisation.

The speaker at the April meeting will be Andy Smith with a presentation entitled “My Life In Music”. Andy will share with us a musical journey through his life, featuring comedy songs and ballads which he has written, as well as well-known numbers with which the audience can join in. Andy will talk also about a variety of musical instruments, such as different guitars, the ukulele and mandolin. We are anticipating lots of amusing chat and nostalgic anecdotes.

To be entertained by Andy and find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL. Please arrive at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. Coalville Pet Supplies taken by surprise as cockatoo lays a very unusual egg! There are many unsolved mysteries in this world; The Bermuda Triangle, The Loch Ness Monster, why Noel Edmonds was so popular, but here in North West Leicestershire we are about to enter into the annals of enigmatic phenomenon.

One of the cockatoos at Coalville Pets Supplies has recently laid an egg. Not too extraordinary, you might think, BUT the proud bird responsible for this egg-laying event is the shop’s resident avian celebrity, ‘Rupert’! That’s right! Rupert is a male cockatoo, make no mistake about that! So, perhaps no-one is more surprised than he is!

Proprietor, Bob McClumpa, is highly experienced in avian care and has been looking after birds for many years, but he has never known anything like this happen before.

‘This is absolutely incredible’, said the astonished shop-owner, ‘I am completely at a loss to explain how this can have come about. Rupert is

a male cockatoo and male cockatoos do not lay eggs!’

However, this intriguing mystery does not end there. Not only is this a unique event, this is no ordinary egg. It’s shell is very yellow in colour and appears to have a ‘metallic’ lustre! It has currently been sent away for further scientific investigation. We will keep you posted on the results.

WHAT IS HOPE HOUSE, AND WHAT DOES IT OFFER?Hope House is the latest service to be opened by registered charity Hospice Hope. It is a place where people with life-limiting conditions can go to receive support, company and a day out in a different setting.

Hospice Hope already has three Support Cafés: one in Whitwick/Coalville, one in Ashby and one in Ibstock. However, Hospice House is a little different from those. Attendance here is only for those with a life-limiting condition, and they stay for the duration of the day rather than attending on a drop-in basis. People can refer themselves by using the contact details below, or referrals can be made by health and social care professionals, a carer or a family member.

Carers are most welcome at the three Support Cafés, but Hope House is for the patient. This allows the carer to take a much deserved break from their caring duties, safe in the knowledge that their loved one is being well looked after. There is no charge for being at Hope House; the transport there and back, services while you’re there (including complementary therapies), and a delicious hot two course lunch are completely free.

Last month the ‘Winter Olympics’ came to Swannington C of E Primary School when the pupils enjoyed learning about winter and winter sports. They wrote biographies about famous athletes, researched where to stay in PyeongChang and created tours of the South Korean county for visitors. The children competed in their own Olympic Games and carried out investigations relating to melting and freezing with ice.

The youngest children built their own igloo and learnt about the Bob Sled sport. They even designed and made their very own sled!

A surprise parcel arrived from ‘Arendelle’, as ‘Elsa’ had accidentally frozen all her arctic friends! She challenged the children to help her free them all from the ice. The pupils made some fantastic predictions and experimented with a range of tools and liquids to set them free!

FROZEN FUN AT SWANNINGTON C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL!

WELCOME TO BRIDES OF IBSTOCK

We are passionate about weddings and we truly appreciate how very important your

wedding day is. You’ll find us friendly and approachable with absolutely no pushy

sales patter, and a relaxed atmosphere in which to try on gowns at your leisure. You

are welcome to come and visit us and try on as many dresses as you wish with

absolutely no obligation. We try very hard to create an enjoyable experience at this

very exciting time for you.

As part of their wedding preparations, brides may still be planning to carry or wear something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. If they are, then they are following a tradition. But how did this tradition originate and what does it signify?

This tradition goes back to Victorian times. The ‘something old’ could be the brides grandmother’s ring and therefore serves to represent continuity. ‘Something new’ is usually the bride’s gown or tiara, and this is thought to show optimism for the future. ‘Borrowed and blue’ could be family heirlooms, with ‘borrowed’ symbolising

borrowed happiness, whilst the colour blue is associated with purity, love, and fidelity. If a bride puts a silver sixpence in her shoe, it is a wish for good fortune and prosperity. Before paper confetti, guest showered the happy couple with flowers, petals, grain or rice, to bestow prosperity and fertility.

As for the tradition of bridesmaids, the bride traditionally chose a group of her closest female friends or family to surround her and to protect her from evil spirits on her wedding day.

Wearing white on your wedding day symbolises purity, but this tradition only came in to being when Queen Victoria chose to wear white on her wedding day, to Prince Albert, in 1840. Before that date, brides would simply choose their favourite colour or wear their best Sunday dress. It is still widely considered

unlucky for the groom to see his bride in her dress before the ceremony.

The veil, meant to symbolise the modesty and chastity of the bride, was originally worn by Roman brides. Brides often still choose to wear a veil, but not tend to have it down over their face.

Flowers still play a very important role at weddings, with brides and their bridesmaids usually carrying carefully chosen floral bouquets. The bride’s bouquet is still often thrown backwards over her shoulder for the group of unmarried girls to catch. It is said that the girl who catches it will be the next to marry. The flower in the groom’s buttonhole goes back to the days when a knight would wear his Lady’s colours to display his love. These days the groom’s buttonhole usually matches the colour of the overall wedding theme.

Another tradition originating with the Romans, is the wedding cake, which the couple shared during the actual ceremony. Their cakes were flat and round, containing fruit and nuts to symbolise fertility. The shape of the modern three-tiered iced cake is generally believed to be inspired by the shape of the tiered spire at the aptly named St Bride’s Church in the City of London. The top tier of a fruit cake was, and sometimes still is, traditionally kept for the christening of the first child.

And finally …...The honeymoon is thought to originate from ancient times, when a man literally ‘kidnapped’ or captured his bride! The couple would hide from the bride’s parents before marrying and remain hidden for a further cycle of the moon after the wedding, celebrating their union by drinking honey wine.

“Something olde, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe” (from an old English rhyme)

‘Off road motorcycles, the law and you.’There has been a recent increase in the number of off road motorcycles, quad bikes and mini motos being bought in the UK.Many parents are unaware of the law and the responsibilities of owning these vehicles, and could be permitting their children, relatives and any other person to break the law and gain either a criminal record, a Police record or be dealt with using a wide range of Anti-Social Behaviour powers by both the police and the local authority. Most mini motos quad bikes and other off road vehicles cannot legally be ridden on the road, nor can they be used on pavements, footpaths, cycle paths on parkland, common land or wasteland. They can only be ridden legally on dedicated sites or private land, with the permission of the landowner. To use on a road or public place the bike must be of a type approved, which means that it must be compliant with construction regulations for use on a road.

This typically means that the bikes must have lights, brakes, a legal exhaust, road tax, roadworthy tyres and a number plate, and if the vehicle is over three years old it will require a valid MOT.To ride on the road the riders must have a valid driving licence, insurance and a compulsory basic training CBT certificate, and there is also a legal requirement to wear an approved protective helmet.Should you, your family or others be affected by this type of behaviour please contact your local beat team and we will look to identify the persons responsible and then deal with them using our existing powers, or similarly if you own one of these bikes and did not know the rules surrounding their use and wish to hand them in, then again please contact your local beat team to arrange for their recovery.Thank youGarry

The other day I was asked two questions, firstly; What are the warning signs of sciatica? And secondly; If I get them what can I do to prevent a full-on attack of sciatic pain?

The answer to the first question is that, in my experience as both a sufferer and as a remedial masseur who daily treats people experiencing sciatic pain, there are a few warning signs.

• A tingling sensation, like a very mild electric shock in the lower back / top of the buttock or sometime in the foot this is an early warning sign that the sciatic nerve has been aggravated.

• A mild cramping sensation in your lower leg.

• An occasional sharp pain in the top of the buttock, sometimes travelling down into the thigh or the hamstrings (these I usually get when doing a strenuous or sudden physical action).

SO HERE ARE MY SEVEN TOP TIPS:

1) If you can stop what you are doing, do not ignore it, thinking it will go away - it won’t.

2) You have to find and place an ice pack (wrapped in a thin covering) on the ‘ouch spot’, ie the source of the irritated nerve. This will reduce any inflammation of the nerve sheath and thus reduce the pressure on the nerve and the chances of it getting

trapped. You can find this by pressing along the line of the nerve, going from the lower spine across the top of and down through the buttock.

3) Apply a source of heat, either a hot water bottle or a wheat bag (not too hot; you don’t want to burn yourself). This will relax the muscles, especially the piriformis muscle which sits deep under the gluteal muscle and is quite often the culprit.

4) Gently massage into the area to relax the muscles completely. If it is deep in the gluteal muscle then ball your fist and apply steady pressure into the muscle (not too hard as this will only re-aggravate the nerve)

5) Carry out the stretch that I have demonstrated previously. In this picture I am demonstrating for someone with the pain in their right side, therefore stretch in the opposite direction if your pain is in your left side.

6) Always use the Sciatic Pain Relief Cushion whenever you are seated.

7) Do not cross your legs whilst sitting.

Seven top tips to avoid an attack of sciatic pain

I know this procedure has helped many of my patients recover from a sciatic attack and prevented future attacks. I hope it will do the same for you.

Best wishes to you all – Ian.

‘LIFE IN THE SWINGING SIXTIES’ is a talk by Felicity Austin, who will take us on a nostalgic tour down memory lane, to recall the rapid changes that affected all our lives during the 1960’s. Fashions in clothes and hairstyles changed to reflect the new freedom, thanks to designers like Mary Quant. The local dance became a disco as we embraced Beatlemania, and television kept us up to date every week with latest music via ‘Top of the Pops’. The meeting will be held at the Thringstone Methodist Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 17th April, and new visitors will be very welcome to share the evenings entertainment. Entry is £5.00, which includes a raffle ticket and refreshments.

S.O.S. FASHION SHOWWith spring, and the forthcoming summer holidays in mind, this event offers the opportunity to buy good quality ladies clothes at heavily discounted prices. Models will show a range of both leisure wear and formal attire to suit all ages. The show will be held at the Miners Welfare Football Club, Homestead Road, Thringstone on Friday, 20th April at 7.30pm. Entry is £5.00 and everyone is welcome.

The format for calculating the state pension changed in April 2016. Fortunately, gaining access to information about your state pension has been improved. You can now access your information online through the ‘Government Gateway’. If you already deal with your own tax returns, you will have registered for this online service anyway and can access the information through the same portal. If you haven’t already registered, don’t worry, it’s an easy process

to register to access your information. Go to http://www.gateway.gov.uk/

However, if you’d prefer not to use the internet, you can still access your information using a BR19 form and send a request through the post. You can find a link to the BR19 form by searching ‘BR19 form’ on the Government web site.

One of the key rule changes which took effect in April 2016 was the qualifying years

of contributions for maximum benefits. It was increased from 30 to 35 years.

But even with 35 years’ contributions, not everyone will get the publicised headline basic rate of £155.65 per week - some may receive less and some could receive more. This is why it is vital to check that the data held by the Department for Work & Pensions is correct – not only so that you have an accurate idea of what your benefit will be but to ensure the correct National Insurance contributions have been recorded.

So why could the information be incorrect? The new State Pension still includes information relating to Contracting In or Out of benefits, Graduated Pensions and even credits for those who could not work but may have been claiming certain Statutory Benefits – it’s complicated, so mistakes are made but, the sooner the mistake is identified, the sooner it can be rectified.

The good news is that if you find the information held on file is incorrect, you can request a full ‘manual calculation’ which can take 5 or 6 weeks to complete. It’s certainly worthwhile checking as the State Pension increases each year and, as a rule, we are all living longer too so having an accurate figure will help you plan for your retirement.

Ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure you get what is rightfully yours as no one will be checking on your behalf unless you have instructed an agent to do so. Our advice is to check the information is correct now to avoid issues later.

Warning! Your State Pension forecast and records could be wrong! In recent press articles it has been highlighted that your State Pension forecast is not ‘guaranteed’ according to the Government’s Department for Work and Pensions. An accurate figure will only be available when they have completed working on the data. So, should we be concerned? Well ‘yes’ when you consider just what an important part your State Pension payment plays within planning your retirement - accuracy is vital.

The results of the ‘Community Voice Easter Egg Hunt’...Many of you took up the challenge of the ‘Community Voice Easter Egg Hunt’ in last month’s edition. Hidden away on the pages of the magazine were a total of SIX brightly coloured Easter eggs. The first correct answer drawn from ‘The Community Voice Hat’ was sent in by Lorna Measom of Thringstone, who is the lucky winner of an Easter egg!
