SETTING THE BUDGET
Setting the budget in my client businesses is top priority within the first 30
days of working together.
Business owners often know how sales are going, and it’s exciting to watch
the shopping cart tally up. But expenses can easily sneak higher and higher
without realizing it until it’s time to pay for team, tools, or product launches,
just to name a few areas of the budget that can blow up.
When business owners see BIG sales numbers coming through, there’s a
strong tendency to think that all is good. Most entrepreneurs think they’ll
have plenty of money to cover all the expenses.
In Mike Michalowicz’s book, Profit First, he laid out target allocation
percentages (TAPs) to build financial controls that contribute to having a
healthy business. I use these same guidelines in building budgets for my client
businesses (see table below).
Not knowing the target numbers to shoot for is a common frustration for
many women business owners, especially online businesses where virtual
teams and tools to run the business aren’t easily controlled without systems
in place.
Don’t let the percentages below scare you if you’re not there yet.
Recently during a financial controls strategy call, a new client said, ”This
chart is amazing and gives me such hope, but the percentages below say my
personal salary should be 35%. I haven’t been able to take a consistent salary
in the last 6 months because of expenses.”

In the first 30 days of working with a new client, I review at least the past
three years of profit and loss statements to get a good handle on revenue
and expenses. I then begin building a budget that works best for my clients to
create financial controls that ensure a healthy top and bottom line.
The following is just a short version of an expense sheet I use during my
financial audit of my client’s current expenses. You’ll also find a sample Sales
Growth chart on page 12 that is created from profit and loss statements. The
Sales Growth chart indicates the growth of top line gross sales year over year.
