After the last general election in 2010, the Electoral Commission found that six million eligible voters were not on the electoral register. That is the equivalent of 9,230 people unable to vote in each parliamentary constituency.

The Commission also found:

Four in ten missing voters wrongly thought they were already registered.

Nearly half (44%) of those in private rented accommodation are not registered.

While fewer than one in ten over-65s have failed to register, that rises to nearly half (45%) of 18- to 24-year-olds.

The rules have changed, which means that citizens must now register individually rather than as a household.

The TUC is encouraging people to register and update their details online at aboutmyvote.co.uk ahead of the deadline of 20 April 2015. Alternatively, you can download a form to print and post to your local council.

If in doubt, fi ll it out – you won’t be registered twice! It only takes three minutes. You will need your National Insurance number which is on your payslip or you can get it from http://tinyurl.com/6t2qzzn

Encourage work colleagues, family members and friends to register too. Please visit tuc.org.uk/vote for further information or to download more copies of this leafl et.
