Matt Franzen took over the Doane Football program in December 2006. Franzen also serves as the offensive line coach for the Tigers.
A native of Lincoln, Franzen graduated from Doane College in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. He also holds a Masters Degree from Hastings College in Teaching/Physical Education. He earned First Team NAIA All-America honors in 1993 as an offensive lineman.
Franzen started coaching in 1996 as a graduate assistant at Hastings College and continued as a Bronco coach through the 2006 season. In 1997, he was named offensive line and tight ends coach, a position he held until 2000. In 2000, Franzen took over the junior varsity program and was named offensive coordinator in 2001 for the Broncos. In 2005, he was named assistant head coach for the Broncos.
In his fi rst season at Doane, the Tigers went 4-6 overall on the season with a 4-1 record at home.
The 2008 season opened with a match-up against William Jewell and former Tiger coach Fran Schwenk. Schwenk was Matt’s coach while at Doane. Doane came away with a 15-12 win. Doane fi nished with a 4-7 record on the year.
The Tigers went 4-7 in 2009, ending the year with back-to-back wins. Against Nebraska Wesleyan, Doane not only snapped a six-game skid against the Prairie Wolves, one of their plays was a highlight on ESPN’s College Football Live.
In 2010, Doane fi nished with a 3-7 record. With a win over Briar Cliff to end the season, Doane won their season fi nale for the third straight year.
Franzen was named the 2011 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Co-Regional Coach-of-the-Year after guiding the Tigers to an 8-2 record and No. 19 NAIA ranking. Doane went undefeated at home and placed second in the GPAC, their best fi nish since 2002. There were 20 players who earned All-GPAC honors, including Offensive Player-of-the-Year Anthony Dunn. Place kicker Andrew Nielsen was named Doane’s fi rst NAIA/AFCA All-American since 2002.
Matt resides in Crete with his wife, Lacey, and daughter, Anna.

Register online at PlayNAIA.org. • Create an account with a valid email address.• Pay the one-time registration fee ($60 domestic students / US$85 international students) or indicate qualifi cation for a
fee waiver. Within the online registration you will create a profi le including:
About Me - Includes basic contact information, previous residences during high school and any military service historyMy Academic Info - Records the student’s high school experience (including home school and GED) and colleges attended for transfers or current NAIA students. My Sports Experience - Collects information on athletic experiences outside of the high school setting. My NAIA Connections is an optional feature that allows a student to create an additional Sport Resume that can be shared with NAIA institutions. Once the online registration is complete, the prospective student submits the profi le to the NAIA Eligibility Center for evaluation.
Test scores When a prospective student-athlete takes the ACT or SAT, he/she must specify the code “9876” when registering for the exam in order to have the test scores sent directly to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Please register with the NAIA Eligibility Center before having your test scores sent.
TranscriptUpon graduation from high school, transferring from a two- or four-year college, or completing one or more semesters at an NAIA school, prospective student-athlete must ask their high school guidance counselors or college registrars to send offi cial transcripts to the NAIA Eligibility Center. Offi cial transcripts must be:• Stamped with the offi cial school seal and/or signature, and• Sent in an offi cial school envelope that is marked by a school offi cial over the seal, showing that a school offi cial was the
last person to handle the document.
If you are sending transcripts from several schools, you can place the already sealed offi cial transcripts into one, larger envelope and mail them together.
Transcripts received directly from students/parents without the school-sealed envelope are not offi cial and will not be accepted.
Please register with the NAIA Eligibility Center and complete your academic information before having transcripts sent. This will allow you to generate your personal transcript cover page you can give to your school to be mailed with your documents.
NOTE: Students who fi nish their junior year with an overall 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale, and have at least an 18 ACT or 860 SAT test score, can receive an early eligibility decision. Those students should request their high school send an offi cial transcript at the end of their junior year.
