Our tour takes us into Cape Winelands, through superb mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch homesteads. We stop in Stellenbosch; offering great beauty and culture that is steeped in South African history. Walk down the canal-lined avenues, in the shade of giant oak trees and beautifully preserved historic buildings. With the sheer vastness of wine estates on offer, we are spoilt for choice when we enjoy our first wine tasting of the day at a well-known wine estate. Travel over the Helshoogte Pass to the town of Franschhoek, historically dating back to the 17th century when the French Huguenots arrived. Often referred to as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa, this charming town, in a most picturesque valley, retains a French Huguenot style. We enjoy a wine tasting before returning to the bustle of city life after an enthralling day in the countryside.

Cape of Good Hope Tour (half day)

This is an awe-inspiring tour to the towering headland known as Cape Point. Magnificent beaches, breathtaking views, historic and picturesque coastal villages are to be seen along the way. The Cape Peninsula is one of the world’s most scenic areas and stretches from the City centre to Cape Point. We travel along the Atlantic Seaboard via Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay, stopping at a Llandudno look-out point before continuing to Hout Bay, a quaint village and fishing harbour with magnificent mountain views and beach. Optional: Seal Island boat trip (seasonal) (not incl. in cost). On through Chapman’s Peak , one of the world’s most breathtaking coastal drives, to Cape Point and the Good Hope Nature Reserve, which has magnificent fynbos vegetation, birdlife, endemic antelope species and zebra, historic lighthouses and shipwrecks. Cape Point is perceived to be the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We go on to historic Simon’s Town, a village with charming Victorian architecture, a naval base and a large penguin colony at the beautiful Boulders Beach. “No easy road to freedom” was a central theme in most of the Mass Democratic Movement’s campaigns, from the early days through to the late 1980s. Any understanding of present day conditions in South Africa is greatly enhanced by looking at past injustice, the legacy of the struggle and the promise of reconstruction and development initiatives under way at present. Freedom has not come easy. This tour offers a wealth of insight into South African history. It includes a brief educational introduction to Cape Town, one of the world’s most varied and popular cities. We visit Bo-Kaap for a look at the picturesque “Malay Quarter”, a living cultural museum and home to the oldest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. We discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and their contribution to South Africa’s development. On to “District Six”: As a result of the Group Areas Act, 60 000 Capetonian families were forcibly removed from this once vibrant area between 1966 and 1982. The District Six issue remains crucial. We examine the now desolate area, Zonnebloem, which was District Six and visit the living museum which attempts to represent and recapture District Six in various ways – as a fine-spun tapestry of communal life torn apart but not forgotten. We continue to the Townships and Cape Flats: Seeking racial segregation, apartheid policies disrupted all non-white population groups, distorted both rural and urban development and ensured hopeless overcrowding. Few houses were built. Sprawling satellite camps of seemingly endless shanties – makeshift structures of various materials – provide little more than a roof and some shelter. As we shall see, squatter settlements are seeking their own solutions as an economic necessity. Against all odds, township life prevails, in all its nuances.

The tour commences with a ferry trip across the bay to Robben Island. (weather permitting). From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa and of the price paid for freedom. The excursion includes a return ferry to the island, a bus tour on the island and of the prison.

In the city itself, enjoy a drive through Bo-Kaap to discover how the Malay slaves influenced the culture, food and aesthetics of this beautiful city and its people. Continue to Table Mountain where you shall reach the top by cable car (weather permitting; cable car fee not included). Enjoy the panoramic views over the city with Robben Island lying sleepily in Table Bay. Also get a bird’s eye view over the Atlantic Seaboard.

Return to the city bowl area to the Company Gardens. Enjoy a walk through the garden and a visit to the SA Museum. This is followed by a visit to the Castle of Good Hope. Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment station, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa.

The drive through the city centre would also take you past the Houses of Parliament, the Grand Parade and City Hall from where Nelson Mandela first addressed South Africans after his release in February 1990.

This delightful drive takes you to the heart of the Cape Winelands, through mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch homesteads. The heart of South Africa's wine industry – Stellenbosch - offers great beauty and culture, steeped in South African history. Walk down some of the avenues, shaded by giant oak trees and beautifully preserved historic buildings. We enjoy our first wine tasting of the day at the Waterford Estate (or similar). Travel over the Helshoogte Pass to the town of Franschhoek, historically dating back to the 17th century when the French Huguenots arrived. The garden is world-renowned for the beauty and diversity of the Cape Flora it displays and for the beauty of its setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.

Sprawling satellite camps of seemingly endless shanties – makeshift structures of various materials – provide little more than a roof and some shelter. As we shall see, squatter settlements are seeking their own solutions as an economic necessity. Against all odds, township life prevails, in all its nuances. In the afternoon we head for Robben Island: Formerly a political prison and leper colony before that, this historic landmark was recently established as a museum and national monument. Experience the conditions of incarceration – view Nelson Mandela’s maximum-security prison cell (Cell 5) and see the lime quarries. In the one, hard labour was served, in the other prisoners discussed strategy, freedom and the future. Later, many would develop eye problems as a result of the sun’s reflection off the lime surfaces. This well-preserved landmark is a monument to the triumph of freedom, dignity and determination over humiliation and oppression. On Robben Island, visitors’ movements are restricted by regulation to the bus and the group’s guide. Tours of the island are conducted in large buses. On return to the V & A Waterfront you will be escorted back to your hotel.

Cape Riviera & Whales Tour (full day)

August to November is usually the best time to see the Southern Right Whale in our waters. Hermanus’ Walker Bay is an ideal place for whale watching. These mammals, which often come as close to 50 meters from the shore, are given to displays of breaching, lobtailing, spyhopping and courtship rituals. Depart Cape Town via Elgin, which is the heart of the apple industry, en route to Hermanus, stopping at the Old Harbour Museum. As long ago as 1857, the Old Harbour at Hermanus Pietersfontein provided a rocky but safe shelter for the small fishing boats whose

owners were drawn to Hermanus by the abundance and variety of fish. The Old Harbour was proclaimed a ‘Museum' in 1972.

We travel to the Hamilton Russell Vineyards established by Tim Hamilton Russell in 1981. He searched for and selected the most suitable “most southerly vineyards in the Cape” to produce South Africa’s top cool climate wines. This was of course in the cool, maritime Walker Bay area, in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The new generation proprietor, Anthony Hamilton Russell, says he is more interested in soils. The team comes closer each year to realising the full quality potential of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir. Take a scenic drive to the town of Kleinmond, for a visit to the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens. This beautiful, secluded garden is set between mountain and sea, in the heart of the Cape fynbos region and encompasses 10 hectares of cultivated fynbos garden and 190.5 hectares of pristine natural fynbos. Situated in the centre of the coastal fynbos where the flora is at its richest, the garden encompasses mountain slopes with their wind-clipped heathlands, deep gorges with relict forests, flats and marshes with restios, sedges and bulbs, as well as dunes adjacent to the beach with their specialised salt-adapted plants. The garden is renowned for its waterfalls and amber pools. The high twisting coastal road leading from Cape Hangklip to Gordon’s Bay is one of the most spectacular anywhere, and with its new coat of tarmac is an absolute pleasure to ride. Not only does this route offer wondrous vistas out to sea, across sweeping bays and vertically down into transparent sapphire shallows, it offers a perfect setting for the entrance to the “Riviera of the Cape”. After a day of scenic splendour, head to Cape Town, arriving back at the hotels at late afternoon.

Hiking Table Mountain & City Tour

A splendid way to get to know the Cape Town – often referred to as the “Mother City”, starting with a hike on the geographical formation which guards her – Table Mountain. The walk begins at the upper cable station and traverses the entire front table to Maclears Beacon – the highest point at 1087m. The walk returns via a different route providing a variety of vistas. The entire walk takes about 2 hours. Note: If the cable car is not operational on the day, and depending on clients’ fitness levels, the walk would be adapted accordingly. After lunch (for own account), explore the history, architecture and culture which makes Cape Town the colourful and vibrant city it is today. Visit the Malay Quarter, Company Gardens, The SA Museum and the Castle of Good Hope.

White Shark Cage Diving

The Great White Shark (Carcharodon Carcharias) is the most feared creature on the planet, beautifully streamlined to slip through the ocean with the minimum of effort. Its immense size, jet black eyes, row upon row of razor sharp teeth and extendable jaws make this the ultimate super predator and on this day, you get up close and personal! You will be advised the previous day of the pick-up time, this will depend on the tides and weather forecast. Transfer to Gaansbaai, on arrival you will be served a delicious continental breakfast whilst discussing current sightings. Wet suits and equipment are supplied and you will get a briefing as well as a short talk on shark anatomy and behaviour. You are now fully briefed on all procedures and the action begins as the crew 'chums' the cruise area and you wait with bated breath for your initial glimpse of the first shark fin. Sharks are usually wary at first and we wait a while for them to settle and then lower the dive cage. The first divers enter the cage (it takes 4 - 5 people) and you spend about 20 minutes face to face with the sharks! The crew will work with individual sharks and you can enjoy topside viewing during your wait as shark activity is often close to the surface. Great Whites are also known for their 'spy hopping' - breaching right out of the water in pursuit of prey! Topside viewing can yield a lot of those action shots! A light lunch is served on board, before returning to the harbour. Back at the base you are treated to tea and scones, giving you a chance to regroup and share the day's experiences before the transfer back to Cape Town. (B,L)

Sea Kayaking & Cape Point Tour

There is no better way to experience the False Bay coastline other than a morning sea kayaking experience. Paddle past the civilian and Naval Harbour of Simon’s Town and out to Boulders Beach. The double kayaks are very stable and perfect for those with no paddling experience. After visiting the penguin colony you stop (time and tide permitting) on a lovely semi-private beach for refreshments, swimming nd snorkeling (equipment provided). The latter part of the day includes visiting the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point. Travel via Chapman’s Peak Drive to Hout Bay, ending at your hotel in the late afternoon. (L)

Start with a visit to the District Six Museum which holds memories of the residents of District 6 – an area on the edge of Cape Town where over 60 000 people were forcefully removed. After a short panoramic tour through the city, we head to the Bo-Kaap area. The Bo-Kaap represents the only area in the city of Cape Town where the Cape Malay community were not forcefully removed. It is a bright and colourful area that is one of the most photographed places in Cape Town. We enjoy a walk around the area and visit Atlas spices, as well as two community projects in the area, before heading into a home of one of the ladies in the area. Here we have a lesson in how to prepare a meal that this community would eat on a daily basis. Cape Town Gourmet Walking Tour

So much about a country and a culture is expressed through its cuisine. This tour aims to combine the history of the country and city through exploring the back streets to find the tastes that represent our rainbow nation. We walk the streets of Cape Town and experience its history, its people and its gourmet delights. We stop to taste a mixture of traditional food, South African street food and to visit some artisanal foodie and coffee shops. We will stop and sample some traditional black cuisine dishes – pap, samp & beans and Vetkoek. The Cape Malay community were brought to Africa as slaves, mainly from Indonesia as well as from Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar and East/West Africa. These groups brought with them their knowledge of cooking with spices and as a result we in the Cape are left with a cuisine known locally as Cape Malay cuisine. Try the local samosas and a “salome”. Indentured labourers were brought from India and many stayed on. Their “curries” and the traditional “Bunny Chow” is also worth tasting. Today’s tour will combine experiencing the city from an architectural, a historical, a shopping and a culinary point of view. Cape Malay Cooking with Cass Abrahams

The Cape Malay cuisine is the oldest cuisine of the Cape people. It emerged from the Malay slaves who worked in the kitchens of their Dutch masters. They could not resist adding some spice to the bland Dutch cuisine! Today we join local “foodie” celebrity Cass Abrahams – the renowned authority on Cape Malay cuisine – for a talk and a cooking demonstration (or hands on cooking) in her home in the Southern suburbs of Cape Town. (L) Highlights:

Introduction by Cass Abrahams to the history of the Cape Malay people and the recipes that emerged from the blend of the eastern spices and Dutch c uisine. Cass has spent many years researching the cuisine of her people; she obtained recipes from the old people in the community, dug into the archives and researched the history of her people and their cuisine.

Cooking demonstration of typical Cape Malay dishes (tasting as you go along!). Volunteers will be asked to come and assist with the cooking

Township Cooking

suitable for vegetarians. Minimum 2 passengers.

We first visit District Six Museum: District Six was named the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town in 1867. Originally established as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants, District Six was a vibrant centre with close links to the city and the port. By the beginning of the twentieth century, however, the history of removals and marginalisation had begun. The first to be 'resettled' were black South Africans, forcibly displaced from the District in 1901. As the more prosperous moved away to the suburbs, the area became the neglected ward of Cape Town. In 1966, it was declared a white area under the Group areas Act of 1950, and by 1982, the life of the community was over. 60 000 people were forcibly removed to barren outlying areas aptly known as the Cape Flats, and their houses in District Six were flattened by bulldozers. The District Six Museum, established in December 1994, works with the memories of these experiences and with the history of forced removals more generally. We continue to Langa Township to cook at a small cookery school that provides the local residents with the skills needed to get jobs in the kitchens of the top hotels in Cape Town. The students are not from privileged homes. As such the fees charged cannot be very high. Money needs to be raised in order to provide these kids with tuition, which is done through a variety of entrepreneurial ventures. They have created a restaurant out of shipping containers. Here they serve traditional African cuisine to the local community and to visitors. This facility is also used to cater for functions in the local area, as well as for the cooking classes. This brings much needed revenue into the school. A visit to the school and restaurant is a unique opportunity for you to interact with a community initiative that is really working. Here you learn about African and Xhosa culture and cuisine. This is an opportunity to interact with the locals and also for you to leave your mark on your journey to Cape Town. Your visit means that you are contributing in a small way to this project. 90% of the graduates secure a job.
