Introduction

Earlier presentations (06/408, 06/632) dealt with 802.11 MAC enhancement

A range of applications will benefit from the enhancement of the MAC

• Multi-media

• Network management

• 802.11 WLAN backbone

Parallel efforts

There is an effort currently going on to create a standard amendment for the consumer electronics market

Other efforts will probably follow focusing on each of the other application areas

These multiple efforts will have many overlapping features

Common MAC Requirements

The various application areas have the following common MAC requirements:

• High aggregate throughput

• High node throughput

• Low latency

• Broadcast/multicast capability

• Robust prioritization of traffic

• Control channel

• Compatibility with existing standards

A single next generation MAC

With respect to the MAC, rather than pursuing multiple fragmented efforts, it is possible to seek a single next generation MAC amendment to meet the common needs of multiple application areas

While, in general, a TG with a broad scope can take longer to complete, the presence of common requirements in these applications makes it feasible to complete fast

Pursuing a single MAC amendment is beneficial – Economies in chip development– Prevents talent dilution at the standards

Feasibility of a single MAC solution

• The CCC MAC (doc 06/632r1) is an example of a MAC protocol that meets the needs of these diverse applications well

• Other solutions may exist that are even better

CCC deals with WLAN traffic load concentration on an 802.11 backbone

• Infrastructure APs concentrate BSS traffic to/from DS– Multi-radio devices will accommodate high aggregate BSS throughput

closer to the portal

• Multi-channel MAC will leverage the available RF spectrum fully

• Minimal delays may be incurred at each hop

CCC accommodates network management

• Optimal channel selection is possible through surveillance of channels for interference, and signaling between stations/APs

• A control channel facilitates the exchange of network management information

• CCC enables broadcasting/multicasting

CCC provides backward compatibility

• The continued growth of 802.11 WLANs hinges on its ability to be compatible with earlier generation 802.11 devices

• CCC is backward compatible, as it can co-exist with legacy stations and APs, enhancing their performance

Motion

• Move that the IEEE 802.11 WG form a Study Group to study the feasibility of an enhanced but backward compatible MAC protocol to support the common needs of multiple applications, such as voice and multimedia, 802.11 wireless backbone, and network management, with the intent to furnish the PAR and five criteria for the formation of a task group to develop a next generation MAC amendment.
