Docklands Field Report Yigit Sever Slide 2 Livability of docklands Below is a transit data survey which gives some detail about trips and distances from suburbs to the city. Slide 3 Livability of docklands Slide 4 The location of docklands is close to the CBD and port Melbourne, it is centralized around the Centre of the city and it is easy to reach anywhere from there due to nearby Southern Cross Station. Slide 5 Geographic and human characteristics of Docklands Docklands is used for residential AND commercial buildings, with buildings ranging from shops to apartments to worldwide HQs (such as the ANZ world headquarters) Slide 6 Geographic and human characteristics of docklands 2010 population: 6000 2020 population: 17,000 (estimate) 2006 census: 3,939 people living in docklands 55.6% male, 44.4% female. 4% children 0-14, 23.9% people aged 15-24, 60.4% aged 25- 54, 11.6% 55+. Median age is 30, compared to Australias 37. 55.6% Australian citizens, 36.1% born over seas and 8.1% overseas visitors. 906 families. 14.2% couples with kids, 72% couples w/o kids. 5% were single parent families and 8.8% were other families eg. Singles Slide 7 History of Docklands Docklands was originally a shipping pier and dock. It changed over the years, with the addition of the central pier upgrade and later became a shipping container holding port. It was later bought by developers and turned into a residential and business area as it is now. Slide 8 History of Docklands Docklands circa 1950 and circa 2010 Slide 9 Overview of docklands development Docklands was originally built around the 1880s under the name Victoria dock. By 1920, It had developed to become an important pier. The Yarra before and after the construction of docklands Slide 10 Overview of docklands development Docklands was renewed by the Bracks state government which began around 2000. It was a renovation project for the Melbourne 2030 project under Vic urban, the primary urban planning body of victoria, but the project later attracted private interest. The renewal project encompasses 200 hectares of land and sea, and cost $12 billion and was paid by the grant received by the Victorian government from the federal government Slide 11 Overview of docklands development It was developed by private companies such as ANZ, who extended the tram line to reach their building. The residential areas were built by private developers and developed from old shipping yards for companies to make a profit. Slide 12 Map of docklands Slide 13 Human-orientated and environmentally friendly with features that make it attractive and make living in it convenient, safe, and pleasant; a high degree of sustainability is a component of this characteristic Docklands is a leader in terms of human orientation and environmentally friendliness. With open space shopping centres being not only environmentally friendly by using natural climate and lighting, but also a central social hub for location residents in places such as the pier. Another example of environmentally friendliness is the ANZ building, which received a six star green star rating. Slide 14 Economically viable and efficient The median house price in Docklands is $590,000, with the average house staying on the market for 196 before being sold. However, many of the larger houses go upwards of $750,000 and some even sell for over a million dollars. Docklands is not economically viable for all, but if someone has a job in the city with a high pay, it is suitable for that type of person. Slide 15 Socially sound There is little reported crime and unrest in docklands, due primarily to its proximity to the city which is frequently patroled by police. Docklands has people of all ages and cultures living in it and even though the majority of residents are young couples and singles, it caters for everybody Slide 16 Livability of docklands On your first field trip, you created a checklist of points to assess livability. Using this checklist, you then collected information according to each of these points. In this section of the report, address each of these points, explaining how livable Docklands is. Provide evidence to support any statements made. Slide 17 Livability of docklands It is very important that you include maps, photographs and survey responses in this Slide 18 Recommendations What recommendations could you make to the Melbourne City Council to improve the livability of Docklands? Your recommendations need to be clear and achievable. You must provide at least 4 detailed recommendations in your report. Slide 19 Green areas Even though only 4% of docklands are of age to enjoy a playground (0-14) every member of the community would benefit from a green space to escape the urban concrete jungle. As there are no nearby parks to docklands, this would be an idea enjoyed by most if not all. While there are small green areas around docklands, a park about the size of our schools football field would be enjoyed by kids, parents, couples and athletes. There is an existing green space in docklands next to Habour Esplanade and Bourke street, which can be improved to become a facility for all groups and ages. This will also help docklands acquire an even larger green star image and become a leader in Melbourne in terms of green thinking. Slide 20 Southern Star Ferris wheel Rebuild and repair In 2008, the Southern Star Ferris wheel was built, it was a grand ferris wheel that was unfortunately shut down in January 2009 due to mechanical problems. Though reconstruction began in March 2011, it is shut down for an indefinite amount of time. The sooner it is up and running, the better for docklands in terms of expenditure on local stores. Slide 21 Environmentally friendliness Requirement to build in docklands Docklands is becoming the environmental innovator in Melbourne, a requirement for all buildings to be at least 10% more efficient would help to bolster this statement, or a grant for environmentally friendly buildings. One example is the ANZ building, it uses 70% less energy than another typically sized building and has received many awards, as well as bring employment (and prestige) into docklands. Slide 22 Bike paths Recreational areas Though there are bike tracks, an addition of a dedicated or shared bike track to and from a destination eg. The city would not only speed transport and ease congestion, it would also reduce carbon emissions and pollution in docklands. It would also be a good way to exercise.
