Meale must serve a minimum of 11 years of his life term. The altercation between the two started when Mr Meale made enquiries into buying Mr Scaife's home, previously owned by Mr Scaife's parents. Arguing escalated and the pair violently clashed on Green Lane allotments in December of last year. In court Mr Meale maintained that he acted in self defence, after Mr Scaife had attacked him with his dog-lead and swung a fence post at Mr Meale, he retaliated - fatally - with a 3ft length of tree trunk. Gordon Meale has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Jimmy Scaife, above. jaw which had ruptured an artery leading to internal bleeding in the brain. Peter Collier, the Recorder of Leeds concluded in court last week that pathologist, Daniel Duplessis, had said in his report that Mr Scaife's facial injuries, "were one of the two most severe applications of force he had ever seen". Upon hearing all the evidence the jury at Leeds Crown Court ultimately surmised a verdict finding Meale guilty of murder. Former Shildon GP, Dr Howard Martin, has been struck off by the General Medical Council after admitting he helped patients to die. Seventy five year-old Dr Martin has claimed that he hastened the deaths of 18 patients, 16 of which he says made the choice to die themselves. The other two patients were given excess medication without their permission. He said, "I twice helped people to die, not because they wanted to die but because they had such dreadful suffering. Everyone else wanted to [die], they could make that choice." He also says he acted out of 'Christian Compassion.' Astonishingly, Dr Martin also 'helped' his own son, 31 year- old Paul, who in 1988 was suffering from cancer. Sheila Martin, Dr Martin's wife, said that if she knew that her husband was going to give their son an excess dose of morphine, she would have objected. Dr Martin was struck off at a meeting of the GMC on Friday, June 18th when he was found guilty of professional misconduct while working at the Jubilee Medical Group. The panel said that he had not acted negligently, but it did say he had "violated the rights of the terminally ill". All of the patients he has admitted to helping die were from the South Durham area, including Shildon, Middridge, Close House and Heighington. Although Martin was, five years ago, aquitted of murdering three patients by prescribing an overdose of morphine, his recent admission could lead to a further investigation. Thanks to Labour’s Criminal Justice Act 2003, the ancient right of “double jeopardy” that prevented defendants being tried twice for the same crime has been removed. Supt Paul Unsworth of Durham Police said the force's "immediate concern" was the impact on relatives. He said, "A decision will have to be made on whether there are any new grounds on which to reopen the investigation and any such decision will be taken following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service." In a recent interview, Dr Martin commented, "I don't believe I've killed any patients. I believe I've made them comfortable in their hour of need." DOCTOR "VIOLATED THE RIGHTS OF THE TERMINALLY ILL" Dr Howard Martin was struck of by the General Medical Council on Friday, June 18th.

WITH THANKSA recent injury to my hand made the planned relocation of several fl ower

tubs - in readiness for the June planting at Redworth - an extremely daunting proposition. There proved to be no need for concern however, the problem being quickly solved when brought to the attention of Mr Gerry Palmer, whose garden maintenance skills are frequently used throughout the area. Without hesitation I accepted his kind offer

of assistance which included the use of specialised equipment.

Needless to say the tubs in question are now in their new locations

thanks to Gerry's skills, but most of all to his public-spirited attitude.

HUNT FOR ARMED GANG CONTINUES

After startling news last week of a late night armed raid on a Church Street fl at, police are urging local residents who can provide any information, to come forward and help with their enquiries. In the early hours of Wednesday 16th June, an armed gang wearing balaclavas, attempted to force entry into the fl at above Lily Lloyd Flowers on Church Street, Shildon. Shots were fi red at the occupant's windows and door, from what is believed to have been a shotgun. Thankfully the dwelling was empty at the time.

After concerned residents notifi ed the police, the gang fl ed the scene in a large four-wheel drive automobile before they, or the vehicle could be properly identifi ed. This is of utmost importance to the CID, with acting Detective Inspector Warren Hawes stressing, "We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who caught sight of the four-wheel drive vehicle and its occupants."A Durham Police spokesman was hopeful that investigation of the property and its surrounding area will provide some leads, "A full forensic examination of the premises

GROOM SPARED JAILA groom who fought with police at his wedding reception after his friend was stabbed six times, has been spared jail after a court took his military career into account.Soldier, Keir Allan, was celebrating his marriage at Elm Road Club on Saturday, June 5th, when it is alleged that Carl Hannon, the brother of the bride, stabbed Ben Hall, also a soldier. On seeing Mr Hall being taken into an ambulance, Mr Allan tried to reach his friend, fi ghting offi cers in the process.Offi cers attempted to subdue the groom, using gas sprays

and batons, but with little effect.Allan, who has recently returned from a tour of Afghanistan, admitted assaulting the offi cers, as well as causing actual bodily harm and resisting arrest and he apologised for his behaviour.Chairman of the bench, William Unsworth, said, "My colleagues and I feel that because of your examplary record, and because you have just come back from active service, we need to show understanding."He was fi ned a total of £1505 by the court.

FREE SCHOOL MEALS WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE COUNTYParents of children set to start school after the summer can be assured that the free school meals programme will continue. In September 2009 Durham was chosen as one of three areas nationally to benefi t

from a Government pilot scheme to give all chidren a free, healthy meal at lunchtime. There were concerns that this scheme would be affected by recent government changes but Durham County Council

is reassuring parents that it will continue until July 2011.Parents of children due to start reception class in September should note their children will automatically be registered for free school meals.

ON TRACK FOR A GREAT TOY & TRAIN COLLECTORS’ FAIR

David Poole, who organises the annual Toy & Train Collectors’ Fair event at Locomotion.

The annual Toy & Train Collectors’ Fair returns to Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Saturday, July 3rd and Sunday, July 4th.At this popular event there will be more than 100 trade tables, with traders from all over the country offering everything you need to enjoy a modelling hobby. "Whether you are looking for that long sought-after piece to complete your collection, or the everyday essential, you’re sure to fi nd it!" enthused a

spokesperson. In addition, the event will feature a range of model railway layouts on show, in various gauges – including ‘OO’, ‘O’ and ‘N’ gauge. The Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society will be offering visitors the chance to enjoy a ride on a classic bus, and – for a small additional charge - steam train rides will be available on the museum’s 1km track, with the service hauled by NELPG’s J72 class locomotive 69023 Joem. The Toy & Train Collectors’

Fair takes place in the Collection Building, with the museum’s impressive display of heritage vehicles providing a dramatic backdrop – including LNER class A4 4468 Mallard, which holds the world speed record for steam traction by rail. "The event will be a great day out for all the family – with Locomotion also offering a children’s play area, picnic areas and more," continued the spokesperson. For more information, contact the museum on 01388 771445.

Locomotion has been working with The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust and the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group to put a record-breaking locomotive on display at the museum this summer. The magnifi cent LNER class A4 4468 Mallard left the National Railway Museum at York and travelled by rail to Locomotion on Wednesday, June 23rd. This record-breaking engine – which holds the world’s speed record for steam traction by rail – was hauled to Shildon by Peppercorn Class A1 Pacifi c 60163 Tornado – Britain’s newest steam locomotive. The last of the renowned Peppercorn Class A1 steam locomotives was scrapped in 1966 – but, thanks to the dedicated volunteers and supporters of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, a brand new A1, 60163 Tornado, was built in Darlington and made its fi rst public moves in steam in August 2008. When the train arrived at Locomotion, the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group’s J72 class steam locomotive 69023 Joem was on hand to shunt both 4468 Mallard and 60163 Tornado

around the museum’s sidings. The shunt will allow 60163’s volunteer support crew to prepare the locomotive for its onward journey, and will also put 4468 in position to be prepared for display inside the museum’s Collection Building.Built in Darlington in 1951, 69023 Joem is the only surviving example of its class. The locomotive was purchased by the Darlington-based North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) in 1983 and was used at heritage railways around the region until being taken out of service in 1996. The locomotive was then put into storage until 2005, when the dedicated volunteers at NELPG were able to begin work on its restoration – a project which was fi nally completed in February 2010.For more information, contact the museum by telephone on 01388 777999, by emailing [email protected], or visit the website at www.nrm.org.uk/locomotion.

YOUTH SHELTER REQUEST SUBMITTEDShildon Youth Councillors have sumbitted to Shildon Town Council a request for the construction of a modern Youth Shelter in the Hackworth Park area. The Youth Council are hopeful that funds will be allocated to allow the shelter to be completed to highly modern specifi cations. State of the art music stations would allow young people to dock their own ipods to listen and share music among friends. It is thought that this would be mutually benefi cial for the area, giving our young

adults a cool place to hang out, whilst reducing the older crowd of young people from the newly refurbished play area. Youth Workers would also have the opportunity to establish contact with groups of young people who are less likely to attend formal youth meetings. The request has been well received by Shildon Town Council who plan to have further consultations with the Shildon Youth Council in the hope of sourcing some external funding support for the venture.

Eldon Community Centre is holding a free celebration event on Saturday, 3rd July to offi cially unveil the Eldon Drift Heritage Banner. The day's activities will commence around noon with an exhibition of mining memorabilia supplied by the Durham Mining Museum.

Refreshments will also be available. The evening entertainment for the event will commence from 7.00pm and will include a disco and a buffet, with the sound of a Silver Brass Band. During the evening, the banner will be unveiled and blessed by the clergy. Guest speaker

will be Mr. David Guy, who is President of the National Union of Mineworkers. “We look forward to your company on this important night and to celebrate together the reality that a small village such as Eldon has it's very own Community Banner,” said a spokesperson.

Bishop Auckland MP Helen Goodman is demanding answers on the future of two new schools for Sunnydale School in Shildon and Tudhoe Grange and Spennymoor Comprehensive school.Under the previous Labour government’s Building Schools for the Future programme, Sunnydale School in Shildon and Tudhoe Grange and Spennymoor Comprehensive school were due to be completely rebuilt or refurbished. This was part of a £400m project to replace all outdated secondary schools in County Durham.

Now funding for the Building Schools for the Future has been frozen by the Conservative/ Liberal Democrat government pending a spending review. Ms Goodman has now written to the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove to ask for reassurance that the rebuilding schemes would still go ahead. Helen Goodman MP said, “Staff and students at both schools do great work but their buildings aren’t up to scratch. We have a duty to give children 21st Century facilities. The previous Labour Government gave

a commitment to rebuild or refurbish these schools. I am extremely worried by the new government’s failure to match this commitment. We have waited patiently in this constituency for our new schools and I’m really concerned that the new government will divert the cash to areas in more prosperous areas in the South East of England. "I’ll challenge the new Government to keep to the commitment to invest in these schools and provide the learning environment that our local children deserve.”

Jubilee Fields Community Centre is offering a range of classes and courses to improve health and well-being. The fi rst course on offer is how to manage your fi nances. The one-day class will take place on Wednesday, 30th June from 10.00am to 1.00pm.

There is also a six-week course starting in September for over 19 year-olds who are looking for a new career in the Care Sector. To fi nd out more, or to book a place on either of the above courses, contact either Barbara or Sally Ann on 01388 775425.

ADJOURNED FOR PRE-SENTENCE REPORT

John Robert Marley described his actions as naïve when he visited his estranged wife at the home of her new partner in Newton Aycliffe. The 44 year-old, from Close House, had received a letter from Mrs Marley’s solicitor and had gone there to sort out a grievance over a car, which Mrs. Marley was using but for which he was making payments. The couple, who have two

children, had been married for more than twenty years when in September 2009, the relationship broke down. When she began a new relationship she began receiving numerous text messages and this culminated with events on 21st May. Alleged threats by Mr Marley to his wife made her feel afraid to be alone at home and appeared to be compounded by the fact that the defendant’s

status on the social networking site Facebook, was allegedly listed as widower. Marley denied this and magistrates requested that the Probation Service prepare a pre-sentence report for the trial at Newton Aycliffe on July 8th. Magistrates noted that Marley, who is a crane driver and was said to have worked all of his life, was averse to doing unpaid work as part of any sentence because of this.

WELL-BEING COURSES

COMMITALS TO CROWN COURT

Alan Leslie Fothergill, of Royal House, Close House, was committed for trial at Durham Crown Court on July 26th. The 34 year-old faces a charge contrary to the Children and Young Persons Act 1933.Paul Oakes, of Freville Street, Shildon, was also committed for trial at Durham Crown Court on July 26th after a short

hearing before magistrate at Newton Aycliffe. A charge of being drunk and disorderly in Albert Street on March 4th was discontinued, however, a charge contrary to the Sexual Offences Act of 2003 goes forward to trial. The 43 year-old was released on bail, conditions of which forbid him from entering Jubilee Road in Shildon.

MORE DEFEATS FOR CRICKETERS

Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s senior sides continued to struggle last weekend when both suffered defeats to Readers County League rivals Mainsforth. At Ferryhill the home side made 204 with professional Billy Teasdale scoring 75. Shildon were all out for just 85 in reply, with Teasdale again doing the damage, taking seven wickets for only twenty seven runs.At the Sportsfi eld Shildon chose to bat on a cool, blustery afternoon and made an excellent

start to their innings. Juniors Liam Horner and Connor Strophair opened up and put on 63 before being parted. Sadly the innings then fell apart and the side was all out for 123 (C. Strophair 43). Some wayward bowling, against Mainsforth’s experience top order batsmen, allowed the visitors to ease to victory losing only one wicket on the way. This Saturday the 1st XI is at home to Brandon and the Seconds are away in the reverse fi xture.

Whilst the Durham Tigers under 13 side, who are based in Shildon, secured yet another easy victory against an outclassed Peterlee outfi t recently, the under 15's went down to a heavy defeat. The under 13's won by 68 points to nil but the under 15s lost by 76 points to 6.In the under 15 game, Ryan Ellison scored the only Tigers' try early in the game and Jonny Hall converted. Unfortunatly, the Tigers started with no substitutes and suffered injuries to two key players which meant that they played 11 against 13 for a good part of the game. In addition, Peterlee had fi ve substitutes, a factor which became more signifi cant as the game progressed. In the end, the gaps in the Tigers' defence widened and the Peterlee side ran in some magnifi cent tries from long range. As with the previous game, the

TIGERS SIDES HAVE MIXED FORTUNES AT PETERLEE

score does not do justice to the Tigers' performance. The side showed lots of fl air in attack and they defended well for long periods. "The side contains players of considerable talent who a making a real mark at regional level and who have great future promise. However they will not pick up the results they are looking for until the side shows more organisation and we have more players," lamented a spokesperson for the team.Whilst the under 15's struggled the under 13's ran riot. Against a Peterlee side with some talented players, the Tigers ran in 13 tries without reply. The Tigers won the game 68 points to nil.In this game it was one-way traffi c from the start. The slow opening which saw Cramlington take an early lead last week was not repeated. Lloyd Purser scored the fi rst try in the fi rst minute when he ripped the ball from a Peterlee

player and ran the entire length of the fi eld to score. For the Tigers, James Pirie scored 4 tries, Lloyd Purser scored 3, Ben Hoggert and Matthew Lovegreen 2 each and Michael Walton and Matthew Borrowdale 1 each. Matthew Lovegreen kicked 8 goals to complete the scoring.Again, the Tigers defence was dominant. The Tigers side set the objective of stopping Peterlee scoring and did so in style. Next Saturday the under 15's play Hartlepool in the Cup whilst the under 13's again play Peterlee. The Tigers are always keen to welcome new players to the Club, with or without experience of the game, between the age of 8 and 18. The Tigers train at Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre on Thursday evenings at 6.30pm. For more information, contact the club secretary on 0191 3849809.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club Under 13's recorded their third home win in a row against Willington defeating them by 10 runs. Shildon batted fi rst and posted 115 for 1 with J. Abbott and C. Strophair both notching 30

not out. Willington fell short due to some tight bowling and excellent fi elding, particularly by the younger lads in the team. Willington were 105 for 6. Net sessions take place

throughout the season between 6.00pm and 8.00pm every Friday. The club is always on the look out for new players in the under 13, 15 & 18 age groups. Go along to practice at the B.R. to join. Everyone welcome.

SHILDON RAILWAY SEEK NEW PLAYERS

It was a much better week for the Town Bowls Club with only the VETS Team, who are second in Div. 2 losing. They travelled to Cockton Hill, who won 5pts to Shildon's 3 pts. The Ladies continued their good run

with a 4 – 0 win at Darlington North Park, whilst the A team travelled across town to beat Shildon Rail. To complete a good week, the men's team entertained Spennymoor B at home and won 5 – 0.
