INTRODUCTION

Books, magazines, and newspapers from India -- thenumbers are staggering. In this nation where free speechand free press are cherished realities there are 9,315newspapers and periodicals being published including 646dailies. In the English language alone there are 1,958newspapers4

The book publishing trade is also flourishing. In1969 aiver 9,750 English language titles were published in..India making this nation the worlds third largest Englishpublishing country. The quality of publications is alsoimproving and many new volumes are notable for their sturdybindings, handsome covers and illustrations, and excellentpaper and printing,

With such a wealth of printed matter available, there is a greater need for American educators to knowwhere books and periodicals can be ordered and to have

1some help in making wise selections, The EducationalResources Center, therefore, is publishing this Buyer's,Guide to Indian Periodic ls and Books for Ameri an Schoolsand 0..eau. Wi h t e ope o assis ing t ose w o are ry-,

ing to increase' their knOwledge and understanding of thesubcontinent of India4

The Guide is in three parts:, the first being anannotated list of selected periodicals in a variety offields;.,the second part listing some American sources for'buying Indian books; and the third, a list of book export-ers in India. These lists are intended to complement eachother and together provide the teacher or librarian withaccess to the books and periodicals on South Asia that willbe used in teaching. Periodicals are best purchased direct-:ly through the publisher. The American book dealers, or thejobber used by a larger library, may prove adequate for mostusers of the lists. For others with more specialised in-terests, the list of dealers in India will provide supple-mental sources for less accessible materials.

The author, Sue Gordon, who is ERG's Consultant onBibliography and Library Resources received her A.B. andANLS in Librarianship from the University of Michigan.Mrs. Gordon's main assignment at ERC is to compile theIndian materials for the South Asia section of the AnnualJournal of Asian Studies Bibliography* The Indian entries71-67701-y account for over a fourth of the entire bibliography. As a result of her work on the JAS Bibliography, Mrs. Gordonhas become well acquainted withridian periodicals and bookpublishers.

The 2ducationa1 Resources Center was established in1966 under a grant from the U.S. Office of Education. TheCenter exists to develop materials on India for use in Ameri-can schools, colleges, and universities. In addition to pre-paring the Indian portion of the Annual Bibliographic issueof the Journal of Asian Studies (an ERC service in 1968, 69and 70), the Center serves as the Secretariat for the SouthAsia Microform Committee 'sponsored by the Association forAsian Studies. ERC also publishes South Asian Librar andResearch Notes, a continuation of the ou h sia 'cro ormNewsletter ca portable microfilm camera is available at nofor the use of American scholars).

The Center developed prototypes of two periodicalsuseful to educators which .were subsequently taken over bycommercial Indian publishers. Thus Indian Writing Today,"a quarterly devoted to significant writing in India" hadits origins with ERC, as did the Prabhu Book Service'sGuide to Indian Periodical Literature.-

The Center is active in making known to Americanteachers books from India appropriate for classroom orlibrary use. ERC's "Books from India", a set of twentybooks intended to supplement textbooks and other materialsabout India available in the U.S., is being used in over1,500 schools throughout the country. In addition ERC hasprepared booklists for elementary schools, junior high schoolsand secondary schools, as well as subject matter lists inliterature, the fine arts, and social sciences. These listsare revised annually and are available free upon requestfrom ERC. For a major recent bibliography of books on India, contact ERC's sister organization, the Foreign Area MaterialsCenter, 33 West 42nd Street, New York, N.Y. 10036. FAMO isadministratively a part of the University of the State ofNew York and prepares and distributes materials on foreignareas, primarily for use in undergraduate teaching.
