    13/44INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS 13

    INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS

    System Installation

After unpacking the unit, and placing it on a solid surfacecapable of supporting its weight, you will need to m akethe connections to your audio and video equipment.

Audio Equipment ConnectionsWe recommend that you use high-quality interconnectcables when making connections to source equipmentand recorders to preserve the integrity of the signals.

When making connections to audio source equipmentor speakers it is always a good practice to unplug theunit from the AC wall outlet. This prevents any possibil-ity of accidentally sending audio or transient signals tothe speakers that may damage them.

    1. Connect the analog output of a CD player to theCDAudioInputs .

NOTE: When the CD player has both fixed and vari-able audio outputs it is best to use the fixed outputunless you find that the input to the receiver is so lowthat the sound is noisy, or so high that the signal isdistorted.

    2. Connect the analog Play/Out jacks of a cassettedeck, MD, CD-R or other audio recorder to theTapeInput J acks . Connect the analog Record/In jackson the recorder to theTape Output J acks on theAVR 130.

    3. Connect the output of any digital sources to theappropriate input connections on the AVR 1 30 rearpanel . Note that the Optical and Coaxial DigitalInputs *( may be used w i th a DolbyDigital or DTS source, such as a DVD player, or theoutput of a conventional CD or LD players PCM(S/P-DIF) output.

    4. Connect the Optical Digital Output or CoaxialDigital Output on the rear panel of the AVR 13 0 tothe matching digital input connections on a CD-R orMiniDisc recorder.

    5. Assemble the AM Lo op Antenna supplied with theunit so that the tabs at the bottom of the antenna loopsnap into the holes in the base. Connect it to the AMand GND Screw Terminals g .

    6. Connect the supplied FM antenna to the FMAntenna (75 ohm) Connection h. The FM antennamay also be an external roof antenna, an inside pow -ered or wire lead antenna or a connection from acable TV system. Note that if the antenna or connec-

t ion uses 30 0- ohm twin-lead cable, you must use the30 0- ohm-to- 75 -ohm adapter supplied with the unit tomake the connection.

    7. Connect the front, center and surround SpeakerOutputs to the respective speakers.

To ensure that all the audio signals are carried to yourspeakers without loss of clarity or resolution, we sug-gest that you use high- quality speaker cable. Manybrands of cable are available and the choice of cablemay be influenced by the distance between yourspeakers and the receiver, the type of speakers youuse, personal preferences and other factors. Yourdealer or installer is a valuable resource to consult inselecting the proper cable.

Regardless of the brand of cable selected, we recom-mend that you use a cable constructed of fine, multi-strand copper with a gauge of 14 or smaller. Remember

that in specifying cable, the lower the number, thethicker the cable.

Cable with a gauge of 16 may be used for short runsof less than ten feet. We do not recom mend that youuse cables with an AWG equivalent of 18 or higher dueto the power loss and degradation in performance thatwill occur.

Cables that are run inside walls should have the appro-priate markings to indicate listing with UL, CSA or otherapprop riate testing agency standards. Questions aboutrunning cables inside walls should be referred to yourinstaller or a licensed electrical contractor who is famil-iar with the NEC and/or the applicable local buildingcodes in your area.

When connec ting wires to the speakers, be certain toobserve proper polarity. Remem ber to connect thenegative or black wire to the same terminal onboth the receiver and the speaker. The AVR 13 0conforms to the CEA-recommended color-coding forspeaker terminals. Accordingly, the positive (+ ) termi-

nal, which was previously red, is now a specific colorto assist you in making the correct connections. If yourspeakers have color-co ded connections, match theterminal on the AVR 13 0 to the like terminal on yourspeakers. For existing speakers with a red terminalfor the positive connection, the connections on theAVR 130 are as follows:

Fro nt L eft = W h ite Fro nt Rig ht = Re dCenter = GreenS ur round Le ft = B lue S ur round R igh t = Gray

While most speaker m anufacturers adhere to anindustry convention o f using black term inals for neg a-tive and red ones for positive, some m anufacturersmay vary from this configuration. To ensure properphase and optimal performance, consult the identifica-

tion plate on your speaker or the speakers manual toverify polarity. If you do not know the polarity of yourspeaker, ask your dealer for advice before proc eeding,or consult the speakers manufacturer.

We also recommend that the length of cable usedto connect speaker pairs be identical . For example, use the same length piece of cable to connect thefront-left and front-right or surround- left and sur-round- right speakers, even i f the speakers are adi f ferent distance from the AVR 130.

    8. Connections to a subwoofer are normally made viaa line-level audio connection from the SubwooferOutput to the line-level input of a subwoofer witha built-in amplifier. When a passive subwo ofer is used, the connection first goes to a po wer amp lifier, whichwill be connected to one or more subwoofer speakers. If you are using a powered subwoofer that does nothave line-level input co nnections, follow the instruc-tions furnished with the speaker for connectioninformation.

    Video Equipment Connections

Video equipment is connected in the same manner asaudio components. Again, the use of high-quality intercon-

nect cables is recommended to preserve signal quality.

Although any compatible video device may be con-nected to any video input or output, to make program-ming device codes into the remote control easier, werecommend that you connect your VCR or DVDrecorder or a personal video reco rder (PVR) to theVideo 1 Audio/Video and S-Video Inputs d,your television to the Video 2 Audio/Video Inputf, and your cable-TV converter or satell itereceiver to the Video 3 Connectors.

    1. Connect a VCRs audio and video Play/Out jacks tothe Video 1 Audio/Video and S-Video Input Jacksd on the rear panel. The Audio and VideoRecord/In jacks on the VCR should be connected to

    the Video 1 Audio/Video and S-Video OutputJ acks e on the AVR 130 .

    2. Connect the analog audio and video outputs of atelevision set or any other video source to the Video 2Audio/Video and S-Video J acks f.

    3. Connect the analog audio and video outputs of acable TV conve rter or satellite receiver, or any othervideo source, to the Video 3 J acks on thefront panel of the AVR 130.

  • 7/27/2019 Document hk 130

    14/4414 INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS

    4. Connect the left /r ight analog audio outputs of aDVD or laser disc player to the DVDAudio Inputsc. Connect the composi te v ideo output of yourDVD player to the DVDVideo Input c or the DVDplayers S-Video output to the DVDS-Video Input

fl. However, i f your DVD player and video displayboth support component v ideo, you should makethat connection directly.

When a digital audio connection is used for yourDVD player, the default connection is the CoaxialDigital Input 1 J ack . However, the connec t ionmay also be made to any of the Optical * orCoaxial ( Digital Inputs, provided that thedigital input source selection is changed as shown onpage 23 .

For DVD players with DVD-Audio o r SACD playbackcapability, connect the 6 -channel l ine-level audio out-puts to the

    6-Channel Direct Inputsa. When you

wish to hear the DVD-Aud io or SACD playback, firstselect the DVD Input on the AVR in order to select thevideo signal from the DVD player, then select the 6-Channel Direct Input source for the audio.

    5. Connect the digital audio outputs of a DVD player, satell ite receiver, cable box or HDTV co nverter to theappropriate Optical or Coaxial Digital Inputs*( .

6 . Connec t the Video Monitor Output fibjac kson the receiver to the composite or S-Video input ofyour television monitor or video projector.

VIDEO CONNECTION NOTE: Composi te and S-Video signals may only be v iewed

in their native formats. The AVR 1 30 will not convertsignals from com posite to S-Video, or vice versa.S-Video inputs may only be viewed when theAVR 13 0 is connected to a TV set or video displaywith S-Video capability. If you use both standardcomposite video and S-Video sources in yoursystem, it is important that you connect both anS-Video cable and a standard composite videocable (a coax cable with an RCA plug on bothends) between the AVR 13 0 and your TV or projec-tor. When it is necessary to make both types ofconnections to your TV set, use different inputs if

possible. Consult the instructions for your TV set orprojector for more information on connecting bothtypes of signals.

    Power Connections

This unit is equipped with two accessory AC outlets. They may be used to power accessory devices, butthey should not be used with high-current draw equip-ment such as power am plifiers. The total power draw

    SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

When all audio, video and system connections havebeen m ade, there are a few configuration adjustmentsthat must be made. A few minutes spent to correctlyconfigure and calibrate the unit will greatly add to yourlistening experience.

    Speaker Selection and Placement

The placement o f speakers in a multichannel hometheater system can have a noticeable impact on thequali ty of sound reproduced. No m atter which type o rbrand of speakers is used, the same model or brandof speaker should be used for the left front, centerand right front speakers. This creates a seamlessfront soundstage and eliminates the possibil ity of dis-tracting sonic disturbances that occur when a soundmoves across mismatched front-channel speakers.

    Speaker Placement

Depending on the type of center channel speaker inuse and your viewing device, place the center speakereither directly above or below your TV, or in the centerbehind a p erforated front projection screen.

Once the c enter channel speaker is installed, positionthe left front and right front speakers so that they areas far away from one another as the center channelspeaker is from the pre ferred listening position. Ideally, the front-channel speakers should b e placed so thattheir tweeters are no more than 24" above or belowthe tweeter in the center channel speaker.

Depending on the specifics of your room acousticsand the type of speakers in use, you may find thatimaging is improved by moving the left front and rightfront speakers slightly forward of the center channelspeaker. If possible, adjust all front loudspeakers sothat they are aimed at ear height when you are seatedin the listening position.

Using these guidelines, youll find that it takes som eexperimentation to find the correct location for the frontspeakers in your particular installation. Dont be afraid tomove things around until the system sounds correct.Optimize your speakers so that audio transitions acrossthe front of the room sound smooth, and that soundsfrom all speakers appear to arrive at the listening posi-tion at the same time (without delay from the centerspeaker compared to the left and right speakers).

Surround speakers should be placed on the side wallsof the room , at or slightly behind the listening po sition. The center of the speaker should face into the room. The speakers should be located so that the bottom ofthe cabinet is at least two feet higher than the listenersears when the listeners are seated in the desired area.

If side-wall mounting is not practical, the speakers maybe placed o n a rear wall, behind the listening position.

Again, they should be located so that the bottom ofthe cabinet is at least two feet higher than the listen-ers ears. The speakers should be no m ore than sixfeet behind the rear of the seating area.

Subwoofers produce nondirectional sound, so theymay be p laced almost anywhere in a room. Actualplacement should be based on room size and shapeand the type of subwoofer used. One method of f ind-ing the optimal location for a subwoofer is to begin byplacing it in the front of the room , about six inchesfrom a wal l, or near the front corner of the room.Another method is to temporarily place the subwooferat your normal l istening position, and then walkaround the room until you find a spot where the sub-woofer sounds best. Place the subwoofer in that spot. You should also follow the instructions of the sub-woofers manufacturer, or you may wish to experi-ment with the best location for a subwoofer in your

listening room.Once the speakers have been placed in the room andconnected , the remaining steps in the setup processare to program the AVR 130s bass management sys-tem for the type of speakers used in your system, calibrate the output levels, and set the delay timesused by the surround sound processor.

You are now ready to power up the AVR 130 to beginthese final adjustments.

1 . P lug the Power Cord into an unswitched ACoutlet.

    2. Press the Main Power Switch1 in until it

latches and the word OFF on the top of theswitch disappears inside the front panel. Note thatthe Power Indicator2 will turn amber, indicating that the unit is in the Standby mode.

    3. Remove the protective plastic fi lm from the front-panel lens. If left in place, it will affect the per-formance of your remote control.

    4. Install the three supplied AAA batteries in theremote as shown. Be certain to follow the (+ )and () polarity indicators that are on the bottomof the battery compartment.

    16/4416 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

    5. Turn the AVR 13 0 o n either by pressing theSystem Power Control 3 on the front panel,or via the remote by pressing the AVR Selectorf or any of the Input Selectorsegon the remote. The Power Indicator3 will turn

blue to confirm that the unit is on, and the front-panel display will illuminate.

    System Setup

The AVR 130 features an advanced memory systemthat enables you to establish different configurationsfor the bass managem ent, digital input, surroundmo de and output levels for each input source. Thisflexibility enables you to custom-tailor the way in whichyou listen to each source and have the AVR 13 0mem orize those settings. This means, for example, that you may use d ifferent mo des or o utput levelsand trims for different sources. When the BassManagem ent System is set to Independent, you mayalso set different speaker configurations and crossoverpoints for each input. Once these settings are made, they will automatically be recalled whenever you selectthat input.

The factory default settings for the AVR 1 30 have allinputs configured for an analog source (except for theDVD input, which has the Coaxial Digital Input 1 as the default), Logic 7 M usic as the surround mod e,when an analog or PCM digital source is in use, allspeaker positions set to small, and a subwoo fer con-nected. Before using the unit, you will probably wantto change the settings for most inputs so that they are

properly configured to reflect the use of digital or ana-log inputs, the type of speakers installed and the sur-round m ode spec ifics.

    Speaker Setup

These adjustments tell the AVR 130 which type ofspeake rs are in use. This is impo rtant as it adjusts thesettings that determ ine which speakers receive low-frequency (bass) information. For each of these set-tings use the LARGE setting if the speakers for aparticular position are traditional full-range loudspeakersthat are capable of reproducing sounds below 100Hz.Use the SMALL setting for smaller, frequency- limited

satell ite speakers that do not reproduc e sounds below10 0Hz. Note that when smal l speakers are used, asubwoofer is required to reproduce low-frequencysounds. Remember that the large and small descriptions do not refer to the actual physical sizeof the speakers, but to their ability to reproduce low-frequency sounds. If you are in doubt as to whichcategory describes your speakers, consult the specifi-cations in the speakers owners manual, or askyour dealer.

The factory default setting for the speaker configura-tion is to have small speakers at all positions with asubwoofer installed. If you have this type of sub/satell ite speaker system, no further configuration isneeded and you may skip to the next section.

With the AVR 13 0 turned on, follow these steps toconfigure the speakers:

    1. Press the Speaker Select Button6 . W he nSPEAKER SIZE appears in the LowerDisplay Line press the Set Button o@.

2 . W h e n FRONTSPEAKER appears in theLower Display Line press the Set Buttono@ to continue.

    3. Press the / Buttonsn on the remote orthe / Buttons) on the front p anel to select

either FRONT LARGE or FRONTSMALL, as described by the definitions shownabove. When the desired selection appears, pressthe Set Buttono@.

When FRONT SMALL is selected, low-fre-quency sounds will be sent to the subwoofer out-put only. Note that if you choo se this option andthere is no subwoofer connected, you will not hearany low-frequency sounds from the front channels.

When FRONT LARGE is selected, a full-range output w ill be sent to the front-left and front-right outputs, and NO low- frequency signals will be

    sent to the subwoofer output.4 . W h e n CENTER SPEAKER appears in

the Lower Display Line press the Set Buttono@.

    5. Press the / Buttonsn on the remote orthe / Buttons) on the front p anel to selecteither CENTERLARGE, CENTERSMALL or CENTERNONE, using thesame guidelines as above for Large and Sm all. When the desired selection appears, press the SetButtono@.

When CENTER SMALL is selected, low-

frequency center channel sounds will be sent tothe subwoofer output only. Note that if you choosethis option and there is no subwoofer connected, you will not hear any low-frequency sounds fromthe center channel speaker.

When CENTER LARGE is selected, a full-range output w ill be sent to the center speakeroutput, and NO center channel low-frequency infor-mation will be sent to the subwo ofer output.

NOTE: If you choose Logic 7 as the surroundmode, the AVR 130 wi ll not make the LARGEoption available for the center speak er. This is dueto the requirements of Logic 7 processing, anddoes no t indicate a problem with your receiver.

When CENTERNONE is selected, nosignals will be sent to the center channel output.

    6 . W h e n SURR SPEAKER appears in theLower Display Line press the Set Buttono@.

7 . Press the / Buttonsn on the remote orthe / Buttons) on the front panel to selecteither SURR LARGE, SURR SMALL orSURR NONE, using the same guidelines asabove for Large and Small. When the desiredselection appears, press the Set Buttono@.

When SURR SMALL is selected, low-frequency surround-channel sounds will be sent tothe subwoofer output only. Note that if you choosethis option and there is no subwoofer connected, you will not hear any low-frequency sounds fromthe surround speaker.

When SURR LARGE is selected, a full-rangeoutput will be sent to the surround-channel o utputsand NO surround-channel signals will be sent tothe subwoofer output.

When SURR NONE is selected, surroundsound information will be split between the front-left and front-right outputs. Note that for optimalperformance when no surround speakers are inuse, the Dolby 3 Stereo mo de should be usedinstead of Dolby Pro Logic II.

    8 . W h e n S-WSPEAKER appears in the LowerDisplay Line, press the Set Buttono@.

9 . Press the / Buttonsn on the remote orthe / Buttons) on the front panel to selectthe option described below that best describes yousystem. When the desired selection appears, pressthe Set Buttono@.

The choices available for the subwoofer position willdepend on the settings for the other speakers,

particularly the front left/right positions. If the front left/right speakers are set to FRONTSMALL, the subwoofer will automatically be set toSUB, which is the ON posit ion.

If the front left/right speakers are set to FRONTLARGE, three options are available:

I f no subwoofer is connected to the AVR 13 0,press the / Buttonsn on the remote sothat SUB NONE appears in the LowerDisplay Line. When this option is selected,

all bass information will be routed to the frontleft/right m ain speakers.

I f a subwoofer is connected to the AVR 13 0, youhave the option to have the front left/right mainspeakers reproduce bass frequencies at all times,

and have the subwoofer operate only when theAVR 13 0 is being used with a digital source thatcontains a dedicated Low- Frequency Effects, orLFE, soundtrack. This allows you to use both yourmain and subwoofer speakers to take advantageof the special bass created for certain movies.Press / Buttons n on the remoteso that SUB LFE appears in the LowerDisplay Line.

If a subwoofer is connected and you wish to use itfor bass reproduction in conjunction with the mainfront left/right speakers, regardless of the type ofprogram source or surround mode you are listen-ing to, press the / Buttonsn on theremote so that SUBL/R+LFE appears inthe Lower Display Line. When this option isselected, a complete feed wi ll be sent to thefront left/right main speakers, and the subwooferwill receive bass frequencies below 100Hz.

10 . When all speaker setup selections have beenmade, simply wait five seconds and the AVR willreturn to norm al operation.

Triple Crossover SettingThe AVR 130 is unique among all receivers in its priceclass to provide Triple Crossover functionality. Whereconventional bass-management systems only accom-

mod ate a global crossover setting, Harman KardonsTriple Crossover system allows you to set a differentcrossover point for the front left/right, center and sur-round speakers. This is key to c reating a seam lesssoundfield w hen a system uses different brands o rmodels of speakers from one of these three groupingsto another.

If you are not familiar with what the crossover point is,the term refers to the frequency at which the full-rangesignal is divided between your m ain speakers and thesubwoofer. Since the subwoofer is specially designedfor low-frequency reproduction, it isnt able to repro-duce high frequencies. Conversely, by relieving the

main speakers of the requirement to reproduce bassfrequencies, it is possible to build smaller, more effi-cient satell ite style speakers. Setting the c rossoverfrequency properly means that each speaker d oes thejob it was inte nd ed to do, wit ho ut the stra in or po ssib ledamage caused b y being fed the wrong signals. Inorder to properly take advantage of the TripleCrossover function, we encourage you to consult theowners manual for your speakers to determine thelowest frequency they are designed for, which will be

the number that will be used in making the settings inthis section.

Note that the factory default setting is a crossoverpoint of 10 0Hz for all speakers. If your speakers have

a crossover at that setting you do not need to makeany of these adjustments and you should proceed tothe next step. However, i f, for example, your frontspeakers have a crossover point of 80 Hz, your centerspeaker crosses over at 120Hz and your surroundspeakers crossover at yet a different point, adjustingthese settings will help establish the proper relationshipbetween the low-frequency sound that is sent to yoursubwoofer and the balance of the sound that is repro-duced by your main speakers.

If your speaker complement does require a change tothe crossover settings, proceed as follows:

    1. Press theSpeaker Button

    6 .

2 . Press the / Buttonsn on the remote orthe / Buttons) on the front p anel so thatSPEAKER XOVER appears in the LowerDisplay Line and press the Set Buttono@to enter the crossover m enu tree.

3 . W h e n FRONT3X-FREQ appears in theLower Display Line, press the Set Buttono@ to change the setting for the front left/rightspeakers.

4 . Press the / Buttonsn on the remote orthe / Buttons) on the front p anel to scroll

through the available choices, and when the c rossoverfrequency that matches your speakers appears in theLower Display Line, press the Set Buttono@ to return to the speaker group selection.

    5. Press the / Buttonsn on the remote orthe / Buttons) on the front p anel again toselect another speaker group, either CENTER3X-FREQ to adjust the crossover for the centerchannel speaker, or SURR 3X-FREQ to adjustthe crossover for the surround speakers, and press theSet Buttono@ when the desired speaker groupappears to change the setting as needed, followingthe instructions in Step 4, above.

    6. When all required crossover settings have beenentered, press the Set Buttono@ to return tonormal operation.

Global/Independent Bass Manager MemoryA feature unique to the AVR 13 0 in its class allowsthe storage of different speaker size settings andcrossover points for each input source. In most cases, you will not need to take advantage of this capability,

particularly when the speakers used are all frequency-limited satellite type mod els. However, when a sys-tems front speakers are large full-range m odels, youmay wish to use different large or small settings forinputs such as the tuner or CD, where two- channel

stereo music may be the desired listening m ode, asopposed to the DVD or other video-related inputswhere a subwoofer will be used.

If you do no t need to create different speaker configu-ration settings for each input, skip to the next section. To take advantage of this capability, follow these steps:

    1. Configure the speaker size information as describedon page 16 . This sets the comm on baseline for allinputs.

    2. Select the input for which you wish to have asetting other than the original one by pressing the

appropriate Input Selectorf.3 . Press the Speaker Button6 and then pressthe / Buttonsn on the remote or the /Buttons ) on the front p anel so that BASSMANAGER appears in the Lower Display Line. Press the Set Buttono@.

4 . W h e n GLOBAL appears in the Lower DisplayLine press the / Buttons n on theremote or the / Buttons) on the front panel toselect INDEPENDENT. Press the Set Buttono@ to enter the request into the AVRs memory.

5 . O nc e t he BASS MANAGER message re-appears in the Lower Display Line you haveconfigured the AVR so that different speaker size andcrossover settings may be chosen for each input. Toenter these settings, first wait five seconds until the unitreturns to norm al operation. At that time, select anoth-er input and repeat the instruction steps for SpeakerSetup and Triple Crossover Setting as shown on theprevious pages.

    Configuring the Surround Off(Stereo) Modes

For superior reproduction of two-channel programmaterials, the AVR 13 0 offers two Stereo m odes: ananalog Stereo-Direct m ode that bypasses the digitalsignal processing circuitry for a completely analog sig-nal path that preserves the purity of the original signal, and a d igital mode that is capable of p roviding bassmanagem ent for optimal distribution of the low fre-quencies between smaller speakers and a subwoo fer.

    18/4418 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

Stereo-Direct (Bypass) ModeWhen the analog Stereo-Direct mode is selectedby pressing the Stereo Mode Selector untilSURROUND OFF appears in the LowerDisplay Line and the Surround Mode Indicator

for Surr Off is lit, the AVR 13 0 w ill pass the analogsource material directly through to the front left andright speakers, bypassing the digital-processing circuitry.

In this mo de, the front left and right speakers will auto-matically be configured as LARGE; it is not possibleto configure these speakers as SMALL.

When the AVR 13 0 is in the Stereo Bypass mod e, youmay still configure the subwoofer output so that it iseither turned off, with a full-range signal going to thefront left/right speakers, or you m ay configure it sothat the subwoofer feed is activated. The factorydefault setting is to have the subwoofer turned offfor this mod e, but you may change that setting by

    following these steps:

    1. Press the Speaker Button6 .

    2. Press the Set Buttono@ to activate theconfiguration m enu.

    3. Press the/ Buttonsn on the remote orthe / Buttons) on the front panel to selectthe desired option. SUB NONE turns off thefeed to the subwoofer, while SUBturns it on.

    4. When the desired setting has been entered, pressthe Set Buttono@ to return to normal

    operation.

Stereo-Digital ModeWhen the Stereo-D irect (Bypass) mo de is in use, afull-range signal is always sent to the front left/rightspeakers. By its nature, that option does not pass thesignal through the AVRs digital-signal processing, creating the requirement for full-range speakers. Ifyour front speakers are b andwidth-limited, satellitespeakers, we recomm end that you do NOT use theBypass mode, but rather use the DSP SUR-ROUND OFF mode for stereo listening.

To listen to programs in the two-channel stereo mode

while taking advantage of the b ass managementsystem, press the Stereo Mode Selectoruntil SURROUND OFF appears in the LowerDisplay Line and the DSP and SURR OFFSurround Mode Indicators both l ight up. Whenonly the SURR OFF Surround Mode Indicatoris l it, you are in the Stereo-D irect (Bypass) mode.

When this mod e is in use, the front left/right speakersand subwoofer may be configured to meet the

requirements of your specific speakers using the stepsshown in the Speaker Setup section on page 16.

    Output Level Adjustment

Output level adjustment is a key part of the configura-tion process for any surround sound product. It is par-ticularly important for a Dolby Digital receiver such asthe AVR 13 0, as correct output levels will ensure thatyou hear sound tracks in their proper place with theproper directionality and intensity.

IMPORTANTNOTE: Listeners are often confusedabout the operation of the surround channels. Whilesome assume that sound should always be comingfrom each speaker, mo st of the time there will be littleor no sound in the surround channels. This is becausethey are only used when a movie director or soundmixer specifically places sound there to createambience, a special effect or to continue action from

the front of the room to the rear. When the output lev-els are properly set, it is normal for surround speakersto ope rate only occasionally. Artificially increasing thevolume to the rear speakers may destroy the illusionof an enveloping sound field that duplicates the wayyou hear sound in a mo vie theater or co ncert hall.

Before beginning the adjustment process, make cer-tain that all speaker connections have been properlymade. The system volume should be set to the levelthat you will use during a typical listening session. Finally, make certain that the Balance Control isset to the center 12 oc lock posit ion.

To assist in making speaker con figuration settings, theicons in the Speaker/Channel Input Indicators will change as the speaker type is selected at eachposition. When only the center icon box containing theabbreviation for the speaker position is l it, the speakeris set for small. When the inner box and the twoouter boxes are lit, the speaker is set for large. Whenno indicator appears at a speaker location, that posi-t ion is set for none or no speaker.

For example, in the following figure, the left front andright front speakers are set for large, the center, sur-round left (SL) and surround right (SR) speakers areset for small, and a subwoofer is set, as shown by the

box with the abbreviation L FE, which stands for low-frequen cy effects.

To adjust and calibrate the outpu t levels, follow thesesteps. For accurate calibration, it is a good idea tomake these adjustments while seated in your favoritelistening position:

1.Put the AVR 130 in the Dolby Pro Logic II mode

by pressing the Dolby Mode Selector w onthe remote, until one of the Dolby mode namesappears in the Lower Display Line. O utpu tlevel adjustment using the test tone is not avail-able in the Stereo modes. However, in theStereo-Digital mode, you may trim the outputlevels using program material, as described onpage 26.

    2. Press theTest Buttoni on the remote.TEST-TFL0dB will appear in theLower Display Line.

    3. The test noise will immed iately begin to circulate

among the speakers in a clockwise rotation, pausing at each position for three seconds. Asthe test noise rotates, the speaker po sition will beshown in the Lower Display Line.

NOTE: This is a good time to verify that thespeakers have been properly connected. As thetest noise circulates, listen to make certain thatthe sound comes from the speaker positionshown in the M ain Information Display. If thesound from a speaker location does NOT matchthe position indicated in the d isplay, turn theAVR 13 0 off using the Main Power Switch1and check the speaker wiring to make certain

that each speaker is connected to the correctoutput terminal.

    4. After checking for speaker placement, let the testnoise circulate, and listen to see which c hannelssound louder than the others. Using the front left(FL in the display) speaker as a reference, press the / Buttonsn on the remote foreach channel to begin to bring them to the samelevel. Note that when one of the buttons ispushed, the test noise circulation will pause onthe channel being adjusted to give you time tomake the adjustment. When you release the but-ton, the circulation will resume after 15 second s.

    Delay Settings

Due to the different distances between the front-channel

speakers and the listening position com pared to thesurround speakers and the listening position, theamount of time it takes for sound to reach your earsfrom the front or surround speakers m ay differ. Youmay compensate for this difference through the use ofthe delay settings to adjust the timing to tailor the spe-cific speaker placement and acoustic conditions inyour l istening room or hom e theater.

The AVR 130s advanced software enables you toquickly and easily set delay times without using a

com plex formula to calculate them. Instead, all youneed to do is measure the approximate distancebetween your l istening po
