INTRODUCTION
In 1971 the Wisconsin Division for Library Servicespublished in addition to the well-established PUBLICLIBRARY SERVICE RECORD, a SCHOOL LIBRARYSERVICE RECORD, a SPECIAL LIBRARY SERVICERECORD and an ACADEMIC LIBRARY SERVICERECORD. These publications were produced to meet theincreasing need of librarians and others for accurate, current information about all types of libraries and infor-mation centers in the state. An additional objective was tofurther and promote interlibrary cooperation. The projectwas supported in part by funds from Titles I and III of theLibrary Services and Construction Act.
In 1972 the Division is producing two publications:ACADEMIC AND SPECIAL LIBRARY SERVICERECORD and PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE RECORD.
NOTES ON ACADEMIC LIBRARY INFORMATION:Most of the academic library statistics reported in thisService Record were supplied to the Division for LibraryServices by the U. S. Office of Education, National Centerfor Educational Statistics. USOE compiled the statisticsfrom the information available in the library section of its1971 Higher Education General Information Survey. Aslightly revised edition of this same survey was distributedby the Division for Library Services to those libraries notparticipating in the USOE survey.
In October of 1971 a bill which merged the formeruniversity and state university systems in Wisconsin becameeffective. The statistics which are published in this ServiceRecord are for the 1970/71 school year. The AcademicLibrary Directory in this Service Record reflects thechanges brought about as a result of the merge.r. Allinstitutions have been entered under their appropriate newname.
'INSTITUTIONAL ENROLLMENT, FALL 1971Enrollment for vocational, technical, adult education
institutions includes only those fulltime and part-timestudents enrolled in the full-time programs of the institu-tions.
REGULAR LIBRARY STAFF (FTE), FALL 1971Regular Staff is defined as staff in fulltime and
part-time positions, usually serving with salary contracts.Hourly staff is defined as non-regular staff. If a library hadstaff members who were paid on an hourly basis but whofilled positions for which contract salaries are paid in mostother libraries, it was preferable for the purposes of theUSOE survey to report such staff with the regular staff.
Professional Librarians are defined as staff doing workthat requires training and skill in the theoretical orscientific aspects of library work, as distinct from itsmechanical or clerical aspects.
Other Professional Employees are persons who, though not librarians, are in positions normally requiring atleast a bachelor's degree.
Nonprofessional Employees are persons in technicalassistance, receiving, shipping, storing, secretarial duties, etc., exclusive of custodial service, who are specificallyassigned to the library and are covered in the librarybudget.
A-V and Other Nonprint Materials - expenditures for A-Vand other nonprint materials but not for materials inmicroform.
Other Operating Expenditures - expenditures for wagesfor non-regular library staff which are charged to thelibrary, binding and rebinding, automation services and allother library operating expenditures.
Total Operating Expenditures - expenditures for salaries, books and other printed materials, A-V and other nonprintmaterials, and all other operating expenditures as definedabove.
LIBRARY COLLECTION, 1970-71Volume - a volume for reporting purposes is a physical
unit of any printed, typewritten, handwritten, mimeo-graphed or processed work contained in one binding orportfolio, hardbound or paperbound, which has beencataloged, classified, and/or made ready for use.
Periodical - a periodical is a publication issued in partsthat usually contain articles by several contributors. Itgenerally has a distinctive title and the successive numbersor parts are int3nded to appear at stated intervals, usuallyfor an indefinite period. It excludes duplicates.
NOTES ON SPECIAL LIBRARY INFORMATION: Thespecial library and information center information reportedin this Service Record was taken from either a School ofNursing Library Report 1971 or a Special Library Report1971. Both surveys were prepared and distributed by theDivision for Library Services.
Data concerning the special libraries and informationcenters are for the last completed reporting year for thelibrary or information center, whether the reporting yearwas calendar year or fiscal year.
LIBRARY COLLECTIONVolume a volume is a physical unit of any printed,
typewritten, handwritten, mimeographed or processed
work contained in one binding or portfolio, hardbound orpaperbound, which has been cataloged, classified and/ormade ready for use.
LIBRARY STAFFProfessional Library Employees - are professional librar-
ians (those with a fifth year degree in library science) andother library employees who hold positions requiring atleast a bachelor's degree.
