Handmade Toysfor Infants

The toys in this booklet were developedout of the experiences of First YearsTogether (FYI), a program of ProjectEnlightenment, Wake County Psi 1kSchool System. Funded by the U. S.Office of Educeon as a modeldemonstration project, FYT hasdeveloped resources to help families oflow-birthweight infants get off to agood start in caring for and relating totheir babies.

We believe that babies learn from theirvery earliest days and that they learnmost from playing with the peophwho love them. Babies lean: from playand parents learn about babies fromplaying with them. Play is also awonderful way for babies and theirparents to enjoy each other.

We have described some simple toysthat can be made right at home, usingmaterials that are easy to find or col-lect. The toys describad were selectedas the best from a large number of toysdeveloped by FYT. All the toys arefairly easy to make, and some that areespecially easy are marked with thesymbol EZ. We invite you to make thetoys as described or you may want totake the basic ideas and add your ownvariations to the toys.

The toys are designed to have sound,touch and sight appeal to engage yourbaby's senses. They invite your baby tomove them, discovering that actionscause reactions and that he or she cancause things to happen. Some toys,

like the puppets, are designed toencourage the development of yourbaby's language.

For each toy we have suggested, underthe heading "Come Play With Met,"several of the different ways the toycan be used in play. Also, -* those ofyou who might be interested, we haveinduded a section called "SkillsEnhanced" which lists the skills a childis developing through playing with thetoy in different ways. Because eachplay activity involves so many skills,we have described only the major skillsbeing developed with each toy. Forinstance, a simple red ball hung on theside of the crib will help a new babylearn to focus her eyes. The samesimple to held by an adult who talkssoftly and lovingly as the ball is movedslowly from side to side, will enhancethe baby's ability to follow movingobjects with her eyes, encourage her tobegin discriminating different speechsounds and patterns and increase herawareness of other people.

We also suggest an age span for eachtoy. For babies born early, like those inthe FYT Program, these ages shouldbe adjusted for prematurity.

You will need to think about the safetyof the various throw-away objects thatcan be made into toys. For example,don't use containers that have heldsubstances which are harmful if swal-lowed, or those that will break underthe wear and tear an eager child willprovide. Always be on the look-out toavoid objects with sharp edges. Neveruse a medicine or household deanercontainer. A small child or baby maynot discern the difference between thefull and empty containers and an acci-dent may result. Test food containersfor strength to be sure they will not

crack if smashed. Cans and cardboardcontainers with metal rims are not safe.All fabrics and yams should be washedand checked for colorfastness:do not

ge if any dye bleeds. Also checkfabrics with nap to make sure thefibers will not come loose in the baby'smouth. Do not use items such as but-tons or spools that are small enough tofit in the baby's mouth, or are made ofstyrofoam or other material which canbe chewed apart. Never use glasscontainers. Check all toys, homemadeor bought, regularly. If you find cracks,open seams or loose parts, discard thetoy.

You may wish to read the "CribHugger" and "Loop and Hang" unitsfirst. These items were designed to beused with the toys in the manual toprovide visual stimulation to the infantin the very early days. The purpose ofthe "Crib Hugger" and "Loop andHang" is to hold the toys near theinfant as objects the baby can focus onwhile alone, and for easy access whenthe parent plays with the baby.

As you use the materials, rememberthese most important guidelines aboutplay:I Play should be fun for the adult and

the baby;I Play should occur often;I Play should be simple and safe.

An of the trrys described in this bookhave been designed to help you stimu-late your baby's development, and allof them are made out of materialswhich you can recycle or buy inexpen-sively. Most of the toys are very easy tomake; some of them are particularlysimple, and these are marked EZ.

The following is a list of items you maywish to start saving or tc buy in orderto make the toys. They are listed hereso that you can see at a glance whattypes of materials are used to make thetoys in this book. You will not need allof them for each toy; you can checkthe supplies section for any toy you areparticularly interested in making.

In addition to the above supplies, youwill need a pair of scissors. For some ofthe toys you will need an iron, and formany it is helpful to have a sewingmachine, iron, ironing board, a ruler,and pinking shears.

PATTERN'S

At the end of the manual you will findseveral pages of patterns for the toys.Some of them are as simple as arectangle; these are included for yourconvenience. Other patterns are full-sized pieces for making the varioustoys. You may wish to trace the pat-terns if you want to leave your bookintact and for ease in cutting, as someof the patterns overlap in order to fit inthe manual. All patterns are coded tothe toys by a number and a letterDirections for each toy mention whichpatterns you will use under theSUPPLIES section.

Please be sure to read the paragraphconcerning safety in the introductionto the manual.

SEWING TERMS

Backstitch:A strong handstitch which looks likemachine stitching and is used to makea seam.Bring needle and knotted thread fromthe underside of the fabric through alllayers to the upper side. Bring needleto a point about 118" behind where thethread comes out, and then go to theunderside and come up in front of thatstitch by 118". Continue insertiTg andbringing up the needle 118" behindand in front of the thread from thestitch before.

Baste:A temporary stitch which is used tohold two or more layers of fabrictemporarily, holding the fabrics moresecurely than pinning.Work from right to left and take severalevenly spaced stitches onto the needlebefore pilling it through.

Clip Corneas:A technique used to make nicelypointed or rounded edges when turn-ing a sewn piece right side out.Sew the article, right sides together.Before turning the article right sideout, cut each corner diagonally, about118" away from the stitching. To achievenicely rounded edges, carefully cliptowards the seam in a series of cuts,stopping the cut about 1/8" from theseam.

Embroider:Decorative stitches applied to the topsurface of a doth article. Popularstitches, illustrated here, are the frenchknot, outline stitch, chain stitch andsatin stitch.

Finger Press:To flatten a stitched seam with yourhands.Spread open a stitched seam and pressyour finger or fingernail along thelength of the seam to flatten it. Youmay also fold the seam over an edge(such as the edge of a table) and pressyour finger along the fold.

Fuse:A method of attaching 2 fabrics to eachother using ' special material calledfusible wet, kreferred to in this manualas iron-on interfacing.) Place the fusibleweb, sticky side up, on the fabric, andapply heat with an iron according tothe manufacturer's directions.

Gathering Stitch:A long running stitch, which, whenpulled tight, will gather the material.Form stitches in the same fashion as arunning stitch, making the spacesbetween the stitches wider. Whenthread reaches the end of the fabric,pull gently on the thread to gather thematerial on the thread.

Overcast:A hand stitch used to finish the rawedges of a fabric to keep them fromravelling.Working from left or right, takediagonal stitches over the edge. Keepstitches an even distance apart and atan even depth.

Running Stitch:A very short, even stitch used to makefine seams, to mend and to gather.Work from right to left and weave thepoint of the needle in and out of thefabric several times before pulling thethread through. Keep stitches and thespaces between them small and even.

Slipstitch:A nearly invisible stitch used to jointwo folded edges, or to join one foldededge to a flat surface.

To join two folded edges: Work fromright to left. Fasten the thread andbring the needle and thread outthrough one folded edge. For the firststitch and alternating stitches, slip theneedle through the fold of the oppositeedge about 1/4", bring the needle outand pull the thread through. Continueto slip needle and thread throughopposite folded edges.

To join a folded edge to a flat surface:Work from right to left. Fasten threadand bring needle and thread outthrough the folded edge. In theopposite piece (the flat fabric), take atiny stitch and catch only a few yarnsof the fabric. Next, put the needlethrough the folded edge of the fabricabout 1/4", then pull out the needleand pull the thread through. Repeat.

HOW TO MAKEBaby's First Book:11 Cut two ships of interfacing of the

same measurement, top to bottom,as the pictures you are using, andtwice as wide as the pictures.

12 Place two of the pictures side byside on the interfacing. Be sure thatthe wrong sides of pictures andsticky side of interfacing are next toeach other.

13 Iron on.

14 Repeat the process above with the. other two pictures.

13 Put the 2 strips together so that theinterfacing sides face each other andthe colorful pictures are on theoutsides.

16 Fold in half, and with waxed dentalfloss or double thread, sew from themiddle to the top, then back downto the bottom, and finally back up tothe middle. Knot to secure.

7 If desired, you can also sew thepages together so that the inter-facing sides cannot be seen. Or,

you can cut chides, triangles andsquares from bright iron-on tapeand press them onto the blankpages. For safety, ' :. -11 aroundthe shape outlines - ,vercast intwo or three places on each shape.

Baby's Own Book:18 Place 2 pictures back to back. Sew

together with a small running stitchOr machine stitch about 1/4" fromedges. Overcast edges if possible,or cut along edges with pinkingshears.

19 Repeat the process above with theother two pictures.

110 Now place the 2 double sectionstogether. Pin to secure.

111 Thread a large -eyed needle with 2strands of embroidery thread oryarn.

112 Begin sewing at the middle of theleft side of picture to make thespine of the book, about 1/2" fromthe edge. Leave a 3" tail of thread.

113 Sew a small running stitch to thetop of the picture, then turn andsew back down, dosing the spacesbetween existing stitches to themiddle and continuing on down

to the bottom of the picture.114 Turn once more and sew back to

the middle, dosing existingspaces.

115 Knot the two ends and cut thread.

Zipper B/g Picture Book:116 Cut three pieces of posterboard,

using pattern (1 A), into rectanglesof 7 3/4" x 6 15/16".

117 Cut 6 dear, colorful pictures fromcards or magazines.

118 Stick pictures on posterboard witha loop of dear tape. (The bag willhold pictures firmly, and if notgluee on, pictures can bechanged.)

119 Slide posterboard into bags anddose tops.

120 With single hole punch or scissors,make a hole 3/4" from the top anda hole 3/4" from the bottom, at thepoint where the posterboard endsand the bag dosure begins. (Dothis on all three bags.)

121 Fold the yarn in hall and knoteach end.

122 Thread yarn through all holes andtie in a floppy bow near the tophole in the front. Tie loop ends ofbow in a knot.

COME PLAY WITH ME!

41There are several waysthat you can make Looks forme, so you can choose what-ever method you like. Thecloth books I can play withon my own, because they aresoft and safe. The plasticcovered books are nice be-cause you can change thepictures in them for variety,but you should not leave mealone with these books be-cause I might tear the plasticand swallow bits of it. We canlook at the pictures together.You can describe the colors,animals or shapet:, what theyare doing or anything else youcan think of, and I will listento ru. Later I may even tryto tea you about my books!N

CAUnoNSince the plastic page covers can betorn and placed in the mouth, do notallow the baby to play with thesebooks alone. (The first two booksflade of loth are safe for the baby to

enjoy alone.)

HOW 10 MAKETo make Mobile:11 Take a round plastic lid of any

diameter over 3 3/4" (suI4: est smallfor bassinet and large for crib).

12 Take a piece of paper and craw acircle around the outside of the lid.

13 Keep the paper circle to use as yourpattern for the vinyl circle whichfits inside the lid ring.

14 Cut a circle 1/2" from the edge ofthe plastic lid, to form a ring.

15 Make 3 "Loop and Hangs" follow-ing directions in the "Loop andHang" section #9 of this book.

16 Cut a vinyl circle using the patternyou have made.

17 Cut 3 slits in the vinyl circle about1/3" from the edge and of equaldistance from each other. Cut oneslit in the center of the ring.

18 Take a small pompom from direct-ions in the "Loop and Hang" sect-ion #9 of this book. Use about 24"of yarn in tying off the pompom.Keep equal lengths of yarn on eachside of the tie-off knot and do notcut them off.

19 Slip the long ends of the pompomyarn through the slit in the vinylcircle. Tie a knot in the ends of theyarn. This will be your means ofhanging the mobile.

110 Attach small toys, etc. to the 3"Loop and Hangs" (see "ComePlay 1 Me!" for suggestions).Take the other end of each "Loopand Hang," slip it through a sideslit in the vinyl circle. Fit the vinylcircle inside the plastic ring.

In Take the end of each "Loop andHang," bring it over the ring fromthe center. Bring the toy to theoutside of the ring and slip itthrough the end of the "Loop andHang." Pull downward.

Variations for hanging Mobile from acentral hook:

CAUTIONDo not use the "Loop and Hang Clip"around baby once he is old enough toreach it and dutch it. It may pinch hisfingers or lips. Also, if you have otherlittle children in your home, it may notbe wise to use the clip. Because thePompom and Doll are made of yarnpieces which could be pulled out (evenif tied very tightly), do not ever givethese toys to the baby.

If you have no tape measure or ruler,use your arm to measure the yarn forthe "Loop and Hangs:" with your armoutstretched, the length frl)m yournose to your hand i - approximatelyone yard.

Use "Loop and Hang whenever thetoy you want to hang has a hole or ahandle you can slide the yarn through.The "Loop and Hang Clips" w ill beeasier to use with toys or objects thatdon't have holes or handles, such asthe "Yarn Doll" or 'Pompom."
