ABSTRACTThe sixth in a series of reports on scholarship
grades at the University of California, Berkeley, this reportdescribes the percent distributions of grades by department for fall, winter, and spring quarters. Distributions are given for loverdivision courses, upper division courses, graduate division courses, professional courses, and graduate 601-602 courses. The tables showthat the percentage of lover-division A grades is initiallyconsiderably lower than the percentage of upper-division A grades;however, these percentages have converged over tiple. Theupper-division percentage of B grades has been cons.stently greaterby several percentage points than the lower-division percentage of Bgrades over the years shown. The percentage cf graduate student Agrades ranges from a high of 65 percent in 1965 to a low of 53.5percent in 1974. (LBH)

This is the sixth in a series of reports on scholarship grades produced
by the Office of Institutional Research. The first report, published in 1970,
detailed the percent distribution of scholarship grades for the fall terms of
1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, and 1969 for all campus departments. Since 1970, reports
describing the percent distributions of scholarship grades by department for
fall, winter, and spring quarters have been published annually.*
UNDERGRADUATE
The discussion in the 1970 report indicated that considerable change had
occurred over time in the grading percent distributions. In particular, the
percentage of A grades for all undergraduates had increased steadily from 17.3%
in 1961 to 25.8% in 1969, for an average increase of 1.1 percentage points per
year. Correspondingly the percentages of C, D, and F grades had decreased over
this same period. The 1970 report also indicated that during the decade previous
to 1961 grading percent distributions had remained relatively constant. The
scholar5hip grades reports covering 1969 to 1973 indicated that the percent
distribution of A grades rose from 25.8% in 1969 to 28.3% in 1973, for an average
ihcrease oi .6 percentage points per year. Table 1 shows the changes in the
percentage distributions of undergraduate grades which have occurred from 1961
to 1974 (full terms). As noted already, the percentage.of A grades has been
generally increasing over this period, but the average rate of increase has
declined since 1969, and the last two years, 1973 and 1974, have essentially
indentical percentages.
Tables 2 and 3 give trends in the percent distributions for lower and upper
division grades, respectively. There are some interesting differences between
these two distributions. The percentage of lower division A grades is initially
considerably lower than the percentage of upper division A grades; however, these
percentages have converged over time. Also, the percentage of lower division A
grades increases monotonically from 14% in 1961 to 27.2% in 1974, at an average
increase of 1 percentage point per year; while the percentage of upper division
A grades increases non-monotonically with two periods of decrease, and an average
increase of only .5 percentage points per year. The upper division percentage of
B grades has been consistently greater by several percentage points than the
*A recent publication by the Office of Institutional Research traces the rise inuniversity scholastic grades in the United States: Sidney Suslow, A Report on anInterinstitutional Survey of Undergraduate Scholastic Grading 1960s to 1970s,University of California, Berkeley, February, 1976.

lower division percentage of 8 grades overthe yees shown in Tables 2 and 3.
Changes in lower division/upper division student enrollment proportions
over the time period under study, in some part, have been responsible for the
observed trends in the overall undergraduate grade distributions. The percentage
of upper division students has increased from 42% of all undergraduates, in 1961,
to 55%, in 1974. Since upper division students have earned proportionately more
A and B grades than lower division students, the contribution of upper division
students has significantly affected the overall undergraduate grade distribution.
The observed recent convergence of upper and lower division grading distributions
has equalized the separate contributions to the combined distribution.
Graduate
Table 4 shows the change in percent distribution of graduate student grades
over time. The percentage of A grades ranges from a high of 65% in 1965 to a
low of 53.5% in 1974 with an average rate of decrease since 1965 of 1.3 percentage
points per year. The percentage of graduate student B grades has steadily decreased
from 32% in 1961 to about 16-17% in the 1972 to 1974 period. While the percentage
of graduate student C grades has decreased from a low figure of 3% to an even lower
figure of .9%, the percentage of graduate student P grades has increased dramati-
cally, since their introduction into the university's grading practices in 1966,
to a current figure of about 14% to 15%.

EXPLANATORY NOTES
1) Designation of grades: A (excellent), B (good), C (fair), P (pass
without definite grading at a level of performance corresponding to
letter grade C- or better); D (balely passing), F (failure), N/P (not
passed); I (student's work of passing quality but incomplete), I/P (in
progress; final grade to be assign'ed upon completion of entire course
sequence); NR (no report; this is not an official grade, but a Registrar's
symbol used to indicate that no letter grade has been assigned to the
student by the instructor); S (satisfactory, graduate only); U (unsatis-
factory, graduate only),
2) Individual graduate study courses in the 600 series are shown on a
separate table.
3) Law courses are not included.
4) Due to the nature of the data used to compile this report, G courses
(i.e., graduate core courses for students who were not undergraduate
business majors) in Business Administration, which technically should
be included at the Graduate Division Level, have been combined with
Business Administration courses at the Upper Division Level.
