The '227' episode may have been a rerun of the season finale, but it was not the series finale; the show lasted from 1985-1990. I wondered about that myself...in the case of both 227 and Me & Mrs. C, the note underneath read "last show of the series"...

And don't forget the Kelo-land affiliate in Rapid City, where CBS prime-time ends at 9 PM Back to Mountain time tape-delay in modern times: One would think that satellite time would be cheap enough now that networks could establish a Mountain feed. Aren't some state-wide PBS nets using satellite to feed their repeater stations?

KFNR 11-Rawlins/KFNB 20-Casper (ABC)

1:45 INN News (11/20 showed INN in late-night) Which didn't make sense since they were affiliated with ABC... Was this a contracthonoring thing where 11/20 recently picked up the ABC affiliation and was obligated to burn off remaining telecasts at night?

I noticed that both KWGN and KMGH each had listings for Gunsmoke; 2 had the halfhour eps (AKA the "Marshal Dillon" syndie titles), and 7 had the commonly-shown hourlong shows. It's not too rare to see two different stations in the same market having syndication rights to the same series; there was a few markets where two stations (in the pre-duolopy days) shared the rights to M*A*S*H, as an example. Though in this case, "Gunsmoke" was divided into three packages -- the half-hour B&W's (as "Marshal Dillon"), the hour B&Ws, and the hour color episodes. the "Marshal Dillon" and the color Gunsmokes were the most-common-syndicated episodes, with the hour B&W episodes generally unseen until they appeared on The Family Channel and, later, Encore Westerns.

Comparing these schedules with those of Denver from the same era, I can't understand why the ABC affiliates tended to go with the in-pattern schedules used in the Central time zone (look at Ch. 3, that's precisely ABC's Thursday-night schedule in the Central time zone at the time), weekends excepted, when Mountain primetime started at 5:30 on Saturday and 5 PM on Sunday. Yet the CBS and NBC stations seemed to rearrange their schedules to suit themselves. Why couldn't Channel 10's schedule for this particular evening have aired as follows: 6:30 The Munsters 7 PM Gilligan's Island

7:30 My Three Sons 8 PM CBS Movie: "Harvey" and Channel 12's: 6:30 Daniel Boone 7:30 Laredo 8:30 Mickie Finn's 9 PM Dean Martin Summer Show I do recall that when "Family Affair" was on Mondays at 9:30/8:30, KSL carried it at 7:30, a point CBS repeatedly brought up when it moved the show to Thursdays at 7:30 (ET). But if ABC could carry its primetime in pattern in the Mountain time zone, why couldn't CBS and NBC? I mean, who cares if, for instance, Dean Martin came on at 8 or 9?

Comparing these schedules with those of Denver from the same era, I can't understand why the ABC affiliates tended to go with the in-pattern schedules used in the Central time zone (look at Ch. 3, that's precisely ABC's Thursday-night schedule in the Central time zone at the time), weekends excepted, when Mountain primetime started at 5:30 on Saturday and 5 PM on Sunday. I don't know of the facilities at KBTV/KCPX-TV/KOAT/etc., but KTVK must have had only a couple of tape machines, since every night but Saturday they ran all of prime time from 16mm film, "in pattern" so to speak. (KTVK fed KGUN-TV). I wish they would have done some limited tape-delaying--such as the 7:30 ET hour to 9 MT, with 8:30-11 ET cleared live 6:30-9 MT (program "content" permitting).

Quote Yet the CBS and NBC stations seemed to rearrange their schedules to suit themselves. Why couldn't Channel 10's schedule for this particular evening have aired as follows: 6:30 The Munsters 7 PM Gilligan's Island 7:30 My Three Sons 8 PM CBS Movie: "Harvey" KOOL-TV had no more than 3 VTRs available for net delay then, so the above schedule scenario (all in pattern) would not have been possible. Well, maybe if the entire night aired a week late. In a post some months ago, I mentioned that in the fall of '65, KOOL flipped Munsters/Gilligan up to 9-10 MT, and everything else live 6:30-9. But they changed to the "wacko" schedule (incl. the movie on a 7 DB) in December '65, probably due to viewer complaints of the sitcoms being on too late.

Quote and Channel 12's: 6:30 Daniel Boone 7:30 Laredo 8:30 Mickie Finn's 9 PM Dean Martin Summer Show KTAR-TV also had limited VTR capability, and could not air everything on an hour delay. Boone may have been a 7 DB.

Quote I do recall that when "Family Affair" was on Mondays at 9:30/8:30, KSL carried it at 7:30, a point CBS repeatedly brought up when it moved the show to Thursdays at 7:30 (ET). But if ABC could carry its primetime in pattern in the Mountain time zone, why couldn't CBS and NBC? When FamAffair was on Mondays 9:30/8:30, it also initially aired in Phoenix at 7:30 MT. KOOL-TV didn't start delaying everything in pattern until spring/summer of '68--during DST, when that was a two hour delay. It stayed that way in Sep '68, but with the return of standard time in late Oct '68, KOOL resumed doing the "flip the first hour to 9, everything else live" prime schedule (with a few exceptions). By the following season, it was a "go" with the one- or two-hour delay in pattern year-round. At some point around there, they got a fourth VTR to use for net delay. I would much rather have been able to see the real ABC feed for prime time (combo live and tape-delayed), than the crummy 16mm film prints for the whole evening.

Two things strike me... so little news on the Chattanooga and Macon network affiliates. And no 24 hour station! WRCB 3, Chattanooga's NBC station, only runs NBC Network News at 6:30pm. No local news at 6 or 11. Sam for Macon's NBC affiliate, WCWB 41. I can understand a UHF network affiliate not staffing its newsroom on weekends. But an NBC affiliate on Channel 3? WTVC 9, Chattanooga's ABC station, only runs something called The Reasoner Report at 6:30pm, I assume hosted by Harry Reasoner but not running on the Atlanta ABC station, and a 15 min. ABC newscast just before signing off. No local news at 6 or 11. WDEF 12, Chattanooga's CBS station, does a 30 min. newscast at 6pm but they go right into a movie at 11pm... no late local news. WMAZ 13, Macon's CBS-ABC station, does a 20 min. newscast at 11pm, then goes to a movie. They didn't have enough material, news, weather and sports, to go 30 minutes? And no 6pm local news, just CBS at 6:30. And how can a market the size of Atlanta not have any all-night station? By this time, in NYC, the CBS station had been going all night since the early 60s. Same for LA with Indy station KTTV 11. And that was seven days a week. In most markets the size of Atlanta, someone would at least go all-night on Fridays and Saturdays. When Ted Turner took over Ch. 17, he made it a 24 hour station, although you might say he did that knowing it would become a cable superstation, so it had to be 24 hours to serve viewers in all time zones. But I'm pretty sure he put in a 24 hour schedule well before he was on cable. Gregg [email protected]

Two things strike me... so little news on the Chattanooga and Macon network affiliates. And no 24 hour station! ...standard for the period in markets of that size. Green Bay didn't get a 24-hour station until WLRE/26 signed on in December 1980...

Quote And how can a market the size of Atlanta not have any all-night station? By this time, in NYC, the CBS station had been going all night since the early 60s. Same for LA with Indy station KTTV 11. And that was seven days a week. In most markets the size of Atlanta, someone would at least go all-night on Fridays and Saturdays. Ultimajock's right, children. News was not a big deal on weekends in olden times, even in the largest markets. Most stations of that period still had other types of local programs during the week, such as women's shows, farm reports, public affairs and the like, and budgets were generally not large enough to afford those and a full complement of early and late evening weekend newscasts. And that was particularly so when one considers that cheap syndie fare and old movies could easily bring as much if not more ad sales at only a fraction of the cost of having a newsroom going full blast on Saturday and Sunday. All about economics, nothing more. Put that together with the beginnings of a severe recession (though, to be honest, nothing like these days) and you had a no-brainer at many small-market stations. Atlanta was profoundly different, even in those days, from southeast Tennessee and middle Georgia. More urban and suburban and more professional/white-collar, the demographics most interested in news. Down on the farm, bring on the country music and "rassling," after folks get in from milking the cows and hoeing the cotton. The good homefolks didn't want to hear Roger Mudd or Garrick Utley drone on about armslimitation treaties and inflation; they'd gotten enough of that during the week. They wanted old-fashioned entertainment like that they went to see at the county fair every year--that's why shows like that lasted for such a long time. Country music shows and local Southern wrestling promotions were precisely keyed to a rural audience. With the precipitous decline of that population beginning in the 1980s and the rise of cable, those shows went by the wayside on OTA, replaced by the Nashville Network and the rise of the WWF (now WWE) and other national promotions. It was only then that most stations began running seven-day-a-week newsrooms and newscasts early and late on Saturday and Sunday, because by then, news had become a moneymaker in most places, rather than a mere public service that was simply the cost of holding a broadcast license. BTW, even so, industry insiders laughed until they emptied their bladders in their pants when they heard about Ted Turner's plans to launch the Chicken Noodle Network in '80. "That g-----n fool! Nobody's gonna want to watch NEWS all the blasted day long!!! Why, he'll have to simulcast WTBS on Saturday nights and Sundays, because nothing happens on the weekends." It took about ten years, but we know how that story ended.
