Killeagh was the venue for the A Grade County Final where we played Mayfield. This was a repeat of the East Region Final. Youghal entered this game on a high after overcoming a strong Kanturk side the previous week in Copperalley by 1 point. The game started at a blistering pace with Ollie Dempsey finding the Mayfield net after 5 minutes. Mayfield responded by putting the Youghal backline under huge pressure, they led o-7 to 1-1 midway through. Kash Ransom in goals had another fine game, with Conor Hennessy at

Ollie Dempsey scored a great goal after good work in the corner by Cormac O’Callaghan who provided the perfect ball. The half time score was Youghal 2-5 Mayfield 1-7.The second half saw Youghal step it up and with the half back line of Bill McGrath, Chris Morrison, and Rory Walsh in control with the help of the hard working midfield pairing of Andrew Joyce and Lenny Flynn. Youghal 0-04 Castlelyons 0-04

By Derek KielyIn Ballynoe

YOUGHAL and Castlelyons played out a draw in the East Cork junior B football championship final in Ballynoe last Sunday afternoon and as the scoreline indicates, this game was a real battle, with scores at a premium. It took all of twelve minutes for a score to be registered and it came from the boot of the Castlelyons centre field player Colm Spillane from the right wing. Castlelyons had the breeze at their backs in the first half , but were wasteful with three early wide's, two from play and one from a placed ball.Youghal levelled on the 19th minute when Daniel Savage pointed from play with a good score from distance, but immediately Castlelyons re-established the lead with another score from play off the boot of Darren Tobin, raising a white flag.Castlelyons added a further score eight minutes later when Michael Spillane pointed over a close range free, but with the breeze a narrow two point lead at the break was not a great return and six first half wide's could have been very costly.Youghal started well in the second half with a score after just two minutes when half time substitute Ciaran O'Mahony made an immediate impact with a point from play.Youghal had to rely on some great defending from Patrick O'Mahony and Vincent Murray to keep the momentum going and when Adrian Curtin sent over a free on the 45th minute the sides were level. On the 59th minute of play Barry Goggin sent over the score to give Youghal the lead for the first time and Youghal had one hand on the cup, but an outstanding score from the left wing from Castlelyons wing forward Robert Feeney levelled matters and that is the way it ended, meaning that they will have

Youghal 3-4 v Ballinora 2 - 4

It has been a long year for our underage girls with the Minor final having to be played for the 3rd time. The girls took it in their stride though and trained hard while awaiting this date. The first game ended in a draw, with both teams putting up an excellent performance. The replay was the following week and fair play to players and supporters for braving the horrendous weather, the game went to half time and was then cancelled due to health and safety reasons with the weather.

Third time lucky they say and so it proves for youghal's minor camogie team. Youghal settled early with a well taken free from Shannen Joyce who was carrying an injury into the game. Both teams exchanged attacks before the busy Ellie Budds made a fine run up the wing centering the ball which the goal keeper failed to control and Emily Roach was on hand to finish it by blasting the ball to the back of the net. Youghal battled on continuing to dominate on the field before Ashley O Brien managed to score an impressive goal at 18 minutes. Youghal were now leading 2-1 to no score when Ballinora registered their first goal from a 45 at 22 minutes. This was quickly followed by a goal at 24 minutes after some loose defending in midfield. The game had suddenly changed with youghal now under pressure. Then a moment of controversy as a perfectly good goal by Shannen Joyce was disallowed. A further point and what seemed like a goal scored from inside the square sent a now more confident Ballinora a point ahead at half time. Youghal resumed the second half with Shannen Joyce scoring a point to level the scores. A goal followed by the same player to put Youghal again 3 points ahead. Shannen scored again on the 43rd minute to put Youghal 4points clear. The game then entered a phase where Youghal defence was under constant pressure. Each player then rolled up their sleeves and worked tirelessly for the cause. The impressive Niamh Quill and Chloe Daly combo worked hard to keep the Ballinora team at bay which proved a success as the final whistle blew and the youghal team were crowned County champions. The final score stood at 3-4 to 2-4 to Youghal.

Team – Amy Hennessy, Gemma O’Brien, Shannon Watson, Niamh Crowley, Nora Sheehan, Michaela Dalton, Chloe Daly, Aishling Siochru, Niamh Quill, Leah Broderick, Roisin O’Keeffe (C ) Emily Roche, Ashley O’Brien, Shannen Bulman – Joyce, Ellie Budds, Sarah O’Brien, Allanah Finn, Jane Walsh.

Youghal 0-11Aghada 0-08By Derek KielyIn Killeagh

LAST Friday at Pairc Ui Chinneide in Killeagh the semi final replay of the East Cork Junior 'B' Football Championship was won by Youghal after an impressive display against Aghada. In the original semi final Youghal felt that they had left it behind them on the night, but last Friday night’s performance was far superior from the Youghal boys and in the end they were good value for the win.Unlike the original match Youghal started far better with lots of possession early and after just two minutes of play Daniel Savage had the first white flag raised in the match with a very well taken ‘45’ for Youghal.Over the next four minutes Youghal had kicked two wides and Aghada got themselves into the match and levelled with a very good point from play off the boot of Padraig Wall. Both sides cancelled each other out over the next eight minutes with both Youghal and Aghada kicking several wides.Alan Frahill O’Connor then settled Youghal nerves on the 16th minute with a well taken free to re-gain the lead. Then seconds later the Youghal men struck again with a great score from Andrew Sheehan from miles out to establish a two point lead.Youghal dominated the ball for several minutes after that score, but had to wait until the 25th minute to add another score from Keith McCarthy, then instantly from the resulting kick out Youghal had another point from Alan Frahill O’Connor to establish a four point lead, but on the stroke of half time the margin was reduced to three points when David Creedon pointed from play.Creedon was on target just seconds into the second half with yet another pin point accurate free for the Rostellan men, leaving two between the sides.Youghal’s Adrian Curtin responded with a well taken free on the left side 35 metres out on the 35th minute. Then Curtin was on target just three minutes later from the same tight angle and the four point advantage was re-established.Since the resumption of the second half both sides were level in terms of possession and both defences were on top. Creedon popped a free over for Aghada on the 39th minute, then amazingly Curtin made it three out of three from the same tight spot on the left side thirty five metres out again, which was a magnificent run of tough free’s for the Youghal man.Creedon was proving deadly from the placed ball and rose another white flag on the 42nd minute and again there was a goal between the sides.Youghal increased the pressure with 15 minutes to go, taking several close range shots but not finding a break through, down to some very good Aghada defending, but after five blocked shots Anthony Frahill O’Connor took the initiative close in and popped the ball over for Youghal. Then incredibly from the same location on the pitch Adrian Curtin made it four long range pointed free’s out of four, this time dropping in off the goal post to give Youghal five point lead with twelve minutes remaining.Padraig Wall sent a score from play over for Aghada on the 48th minute and Youghal’s full back line through the very impressive Philip Monaghan had to battle hard as the Rostellan men came in search of a goal.Youghal needed something fast to keep the pressure off and with nine minutes remaining the outstanding Aaron Kenny sent Barry Goggin free and Goggin made no mistake putting the ball over.Aghada weren’t giving up just yet and rallied with two late scores from David CAreedon from play and also a great score from Shane Wall, but Youghal didn’t panic and saw out the remainder of this game to set up an East Cork Final with Castlelyons on Sunday the 13th of November, with the venue to be announced.

The first 20 mins saw Mayfield pile on the pressure and led 0-4 to 0-0. But with a never die attitude the Youghal lads worked hard to contain the Mayfield attack. Monday, October 03, 2011(Courtesy of the Irish Examiner)Youghal 2-12 Newcestown 2-7 YOUGHAL’S recent record in replays hasn’t been too impressive, but this Cork Premier IHC semi-final effort against Newcestown at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday certainly was.

Sharp, controlled and, at times, playing sweet hurling, they booked a final date with Courcey Rovers at the same venue next weekend.

Despite falling behind to an early Fionn Keane goal, quick strikes from Leigh Desmond and Bill Cooper, in the 12th and 13th minutes, gave them an edge they never really lost, a badly needed second Newcestown goal coming too late to make a difference.

Full marks to Youghal, they had their homework done as tremendous displays from Brendan and

Page 6: youghal.cork.gaa.ieyoughal.cork.gaa.ie/Shared Documents/Archive Match...  · Web viewWe travelled to Killeagh on Wednesday 23rd November to play Castlelyons in the final of the Under

Damien Ring, Conor Spillane, Brett Moloney and Bill Cooper powered them home. They opened up the play well and often stretched a Newcestown side that failed to ignite.

Newcestown got a super start though, Hugh Curran sending Cathrach Keane racing through the middle just three minutes into the contest and he set up his brother Fionn for a cracking goal.

But Youghal, with Spillane and Damien Ring powerhouses in the half backline, soon hit back as points from Leigh Desmond, operating on the left wing with menace, and the razor sharp Brendan Ring settled them down. Adapting to the slippery conditions better- even though Cathrach Keane missed a glorious chance of a second Newcestown goal in the 10th minute – Youghal were looking lively, Cooper and Moloney calling the shots around midfield.

And they struck those two telling blows in the space of a minute, goals Newcestown never recovered from. The first came from Desmond in the 12th minute, after great approach work by Moloney and James O’Mahony. And a second quickly followed, this time Cooper getting a final touch despite Brendan Ring’s batted effort looking destined to beat goalkeeper Jim O’Sullivan.

And Youghal coach Peter Queally was quick to highlight the importance of the goals."Yeah they were two vital goals and came at a very important time for us after conceding that early goal. It gave us a huge lift, as did Brendan Ring’s free taking in the second-half when Newcestown were coming back at us strongly.

"There was nothing soft out there, we had to dig it out and at times it was a real battle, but we stood up to it well. We were much improved from the last night though and it should give the town a big lift next week before we play Courceys in the final."

Leading 2-3 to 1-0 after the opening quarter there was some excellent hurling in the next 15 minutes as both sides looked lively in the miserable conditions. Eoin Kelly got his first Newcestown point in the 17th minute, but as the play began to open up it was Youghal who looked the sharper side with Coleman’s 28th minute point the pick of the lot after great approach work by Spillane and Moloney as the seasiders led 2-6 to 1-4 at the break.

Three minutes into the second-half Newcestown were out of luck again. Cathrach Keane, on another mazy run, was taken down, referee David Copps awarding a penalty. However, Kelly’s low strike was brilliantly saved by Andrew Curtin for a 65 which Kelly did manage to convert to reduce the leeway. The momentum was with Newcestown now and they weren’t finished as two fabulous long range frees by Kelly left just two points between the sides after 40 minutes and it ws all to play for. But the Newcestown defence always looked vulnerable and, conceding too many frees, Ring, bar once, punished them hard by pushing his side 2-9 to 1-7 clear entering the final quarter

The tempo increased too, yellow cards aplenty with Coleman lucky to stay on the field. But it was Youghal who pushed on, the ice cool Ring firing over a super point from play after a great ball from Desmond.

In fairness to Newcestown they battled on, always looking for a goal that would breathe new life into their challenge. It did come, a cracker from Odhran Keane, but too late to halt Youghal’s march to a final date with Courceys next Sunday.

Scorers for Youghal: B Ring 0-7 (5fs), L Desmond 1-2, B. Cooper 1-0, B Coleman, B Moloney, J Ormonde 0-1 each.

By Derek KielyAt Pairc Ui Rinn

YOUGHAL will play Courcey Rovers in the County Final on Sunday the 9th of October at Pairc Ui Rinn at 3.45pm after a fantastic performance where every player gave 100% for the cause and on a night that was very tough to play hurling on, weather wise. The character of this Youghal side was tested severely in the first meeting of these sides and Peter Queally's men stood up to the test d passed with flying colours on that occasion and their metal would be tested early on last Saturday night when Newcestown got an early goal on the 3rd minute.Youghal's response was magnificent. Belief, determination, skill and pure 100% passion shone throughout the side as Bill Cooper sent over a point from play, then Brendan Coleman powered over a score to leave one point between the sides.Youghal then took the lead through Leigh Desmond, showing his power and strength to finish the ball into the Newcestown net.Stunned Newcestown didn't know what hit them and within seconds Jim O'Sullivan would be picking the ball out of his net again as Youghal powered through to the oppositions goal, the ball sticking in the ground for a few seconds, before Bill Cooper struck the Sliotar home.Brendan Ring pointed a free next and when the white flag was raised Youghal had struck 2-03 without reply.Eoin Kelly got a score for Newcestown, but back came Youghal with Leigh Desmond getting a point from play, then Leigh Struck over a pointed free.Kelly pointed for Newcestown, instantly Youghal replied with a Ring score. Fionn Keane pointed before the short whistle for Newcestown, but at the interval Youghal led by five points and were just 30 minutes away from a place in the County Final. On the resumption Newcestown were throwing everything at the Youghal defence and on the 33rd minute the Referee awarded a dubious penealty and Youghal needed some inspirational defending.Eoin Kelly struck the ball low and hard to the left, but like a wall Andrew Curtin flicked the ball to the right of the post for the '65' saving the penealty shot.Kelly pointed the '65' and then put over two further free's in a ten minute spell of pressure to make it a two point match. To their credit Youghal never panicked and started to take control of the game again.Brendan Ring hit over three free's and a point from play and when Youghal led by 6 points on the 49th minute the writing on the wall for Newcestown. The second half performance of Brett Moloney was emphasised by a super pointed score from play on the 53rd minute.Jonathan Ormonde who came on with ten minutes to go, has proven to be a fantastic impact sub for this Youghal side and again he delivered for Youghal with a score on the 57th minute and Youghal led by a massive 8 points.Newcestown got a last puck consolation goal, but the the job was done and the celebrations of reaching the County Final began.

There were outstanding performances all over the field, but a special mention must go to Youghal's goal keeper Richard Cunningham who repaid the faith in him to manager Peter Queally with interest, superb performance by the young man.

Youghal 1-12 Newcestown 2-09

By Derek KielyIn Pairc Ui Rinn

When the dust settles and everyone has had time to draw their breath, maybe a draw was a fair result in the end and only for two errors in judgement, Youghal could have found themselves in the County Final .Then on the other side of the coin, four late wides from Newcestown could mean that this could be Youghal's year, one thing is for certain we are going to have a minimum of 60 minutes more hurling to see who will make it through and Youghal showed enough, courage and belief in the second half in particular to convince me that they are by far the better hurling side.Youghal played with a significant wind at their backs in the first half, but early scores were as rare as hens teeth for the Eochaill Gaels and it was Newcestown who took the early lead with two scores in the third minute from Fionn Keane and Cathrach Keane.Youghal's first white flag came of the stick of Brendan Ring from play, but back came Newcestown with a score from their most impressive player Eoin Kelly from play on the sixth minute.Youghal narrowed the deficit to just a single point sixty seconds later, when man of the match Damien Ring struck over from 65 yards off a placed ball. Then a moment of misjudgement by the Youghal keeper let Kelly in for a goal and Youghal had to re-build again. Re-build they did and in some style too on the 14th minute when from the '21' Leigh Desmond slotted home a beautifully struck shot passed a wall of Newcwestown players into the top right hand corner of the net , to just leave a point between the sides again. After a long period of play, Youghal were level on the 20th minute when Brendan Ring fired over a free, but instantly and lets not forget into the wind Newcestown moved the ball back up to the 'City End' goal and Hugh Curran pointed to re-gain the lead. This game was hotting up now and back came Youghal with a very well worked move down the right wing, where Bill Cooper hand passed the ball back to Andrew Curtin on the Newcestown '45' and the Youghal number five made no mistake with the shot sending the ball over and the match level again.End to end stuff in the opening half Newcestown who cleverly dropped two forwards back into the centre of the field in the first half scored two points without reply, off Kelly and Curran. Youghal needed to respond before half time and with just two minutes remaining Brendan Ring was on target again with a free to leave the narrowest of margins, then a minute later the sides were level for the third time when Bill Cooper was on target.Eoin Kelly did have the last say ahead of the short whistle with a pointed free for Newcestown and the

talk during half time in the main stand, was all about how would Youghal cope with the Newcestown attack, especially as they had the wind at their backs for the final 30 mins.Peter Queally must be some half time team talker, because the side that re-emerged were 100% better than the team that went in at half time.Immediately Youghal's movement and anticipation was excellent and within 90 seconds Andrew Curtin had the sides level yet again with another well taken score from play.It was going to take an almighty effort from the Youghal defence in this game playing into the elements and it must be said that Barry Ring, Barry Goggin and Conor Spillane were outstanding throughout the second half and they needed to be if Youghal were going to have any hope.Youghal took the lead for the very first time in this match on the 36th minute following a point from Brett Moloney who had a very good match in Lar Na Pairca.Newcestown responded from Mikey Bradfield with a score, but then for the next 14 minutes it was all Youghal. Andrew Curtin had his third score from play seconds later, then Brendan Ring had a further two scores, one from a free and the other from play in a cleverly worked one-two off a quick '65'with Brett Moloney.Brendan Coleman added a further score from play and with just twelve minutes remaining Youghal led by a significant four points, then after a fourteen minute gap since the fourth minute of the second half, Fionn Keane reduced Youghal's Lead to just a goal. With four minutes to go after a savage seven minutes of play Youghal gave away their second sloppy goal, making the last few minutes very difficult, but credit the Youghal men who fought valiantly to the final whistle and now a semi final replay awaits Peter and his Eochaill Gaels.

Scorers for Youghal:Brendan Ring 0-5 (3f) Leigh Desmond 1-0, Andrew Curtin 0-3, Damien Ring, Brett Moloney, Bill Cooper and Brendan Coleman 0-1 each.

Scorers for Newcestown: Eoin Kelly 2-3, Fionn Keane and Hugh Curran 0-2 each, M Bradfield and Cathrach Keane 0-1 each.

YOUGHAL: Richard Cunningham; Brendan O'Sullivan, Kenneth Walsh, Barry Ring; Barry Goggin, Conor Spillane (Cpt) Damien Ring; Brett Moloney, Nigel Roche; Ciarain O'Mahony, Bill Cooper, Brendan Coleman; Andrew Curtin, Leigh Desmond, Brendan Ring.Substitutes: James O'Mahony for Ciarain O'Mahony (Half Time) Ken Dempsey for Andrew Curtin (52)

Referee: Colm Lyons (Nemo Rangers)

Man of the Match: No question it was Damien Ring. Rings complete and total dominance of the half back line was incredible. He was fouled on numerous occasions but got up and got on with it, even though there was plenty positives to take away from the game, the most positive was the performance of the Youghal number 7.

Games top Score: Definitely Leigh Desmond's 14th minute rocket into the top right hand corner of the Newcestown Net, it came at a crucial time and without Leigh s goal the Youghal side at that time in the game looked in a small bit of trouble.

TO say Newcestown are dogged would be an understatement. They simply don’t know how to lose.

It may have taken two fortuitous goals to keep their Premier IHC ambitions alive against Youghal at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday, but deep inside they know too they squandered three sublime chances at the death to book a final spot after Eoin Kelly’s 56th minute equalising goal had given them a lifeline.

But it would have been rough justice on a Youghal side that shot 10 wides in the first-half and got a real taste of Newcestown’s never-say-die mentality.

Newcestown made a super start with brothers Fionn and Cathrac Keane giving them a quick two-point advantage, Youghal settled though and Brendan Ring got their opening point in the fifth minute. But Youghal never made effective use of the strong wind at their backs in the opening half as battling Newcestown led 0-3 to 0-2 after seven minutes. And then their opening goal – you’ll never see an easier one — two minutes later, Kelly’s harmless looking shot looking easy meat for goalkeeper Richard Cunningham only for a wicked bounce carrying the ball over the line.

Undaunted, however, Youghal were in at the other end when a Newcestown defender was penalised for lying on the ball and, from the resulting 21, Lee Desmond struck a rasper to the top right corner as Newcestown led 1-3 to 1-2 after the opening quarter.

No question Youghal had plenty possession in the second quarter but they failed to make use of it. Buoyed by a solid half-back line, where Conor Spillane and Damien Ring in particular were outstanding, they were squandering too many chances. They moved Bill Cooper to full-forward to little effect and watched as Newcestown were far more economical through Hugh Curran and Kelly and, at the break. Youghal only held s a slender 1-7 to 1-6 lead after playing with the wind.

Youghal were up for the fight though in the second-half and, after a fine move, Andrew Curtin soon tied things up. And it got even better when Brett Moloney put them ahead for the first time in the 35th minute.

But Newcestown were always in their faces and with John Crowley, Kevin Long and Ger O’Driscoll working hard in defence there were no easy scores coming from Youghal.

Eight minutes into the second-half Youghal had a glorious chance of a second goal when a rash pull resulted in Colm Lyons awarding them a penalty. This time, however, Desmond’s strike was saved by goalkeeper Jim O’Sullivan. But Youghal were still in the ascendancy and Brendan Ring’s accuracy earned his side a 1-11 to 1-8 lead entering the final quarter.

It got even better when Coleman made it a four point cushion in the 47th minute. But again Newcestown’s battling spirit manifested as they whittled down the Youghal lead. Just playing two up front, first Fionn Keane pointed and then substitute James O’Mahony almost had a levelling goal. But it was soon to come – Kelly getting his second in the 56th minute with again questions over goalkeeper Richard Cunningham. And Newcestown might even have won it, three chances going abegging - Kelly’s free going wide with Fionn Keane and Daniel Twomey also missing from play. It would have been a nice steal though, they’ll have to do it all again next weekend for the right to meet Courcey Rovers in the final.

Scorers for Newcestown: E Kelly 2-3 (2fs), F Keane, H Curran 0-2 each, C Keane, M. Bradfield 0-1 each.

Evening Echo Cork County Intermediate Football Championship Quarter Final Replay

Youghal 0-09 Kinsale 0-11

By Derek KielyIn Pairc Ui Rinn

The chance of a Youghal County double was ended at Pairc Ui Rinn on a rain sodden night last Friday, when Kinsale progressed through to the semi final of the Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship with a two point win in the end.Kinsale had the lead after just one minute when Lyndon Kiely pointed from play, but Youghal responded well with a score from Paul Kelly from play two minutes later. Both sides were evenly matched throughout the first half and on the 7th minute Paul Moylan gave Youghal the lead, then Ken Dempsey added another score a minute later with a well taken score from play.Derry O'Callaghan got one back for Kinsale on the 10th minute, then Youghal were in trouble, with young Ring sent off after a tackle where he clearly lost his footing in the challenge, it was a yellow card definitely but a red card was a bit harsh to say the least.Youghal then in the conditions which were diabolical for any sport had to make up a lot of ground and Kinsale were picking holes in the Youghal side in and around the middle of the pairc and Niall McCarthy levelled on the 17th minute to make it 0-03 each.Barry Gray then gave Kinsale the lead on the 18th minute, but Moylan was there to put over a close range free a minute later to level matters for the fourth time.Mark Coughlan then gave Kinsale the lead again on the 20th minute of play and his team mate Gearoid Finn added another score to leave two points between the sides.Paul Moylan narrowed the deficit with two minutes of the first half remaining, but if anything Youghal were going better than Kinsale at this stage and didn't want to hear the half time whistle, but it was blown and Youghal trailed Kinsale by the narrowist of margins at the short whistle. It is hard to believe, but the conditions got even worse in the second half and the football suffered as both sides tried to cope with a ball that resembled a bar of soap at times.Like the first half Kinsale were quickly out of the blocks with a score from O'Callaghan, but again the Youghal lads showed some great heart and Nigel Roche put over a great score from play.Roche was on target again for Youghal seconds later with another beautiful score from play and all of a sudden the sides were level again.Ken Dempsey a real leader in the team then fired Youghal into the lead with a superb score from the left wing and the Youghal tails were up.Kinsale played their way back into the game after withstanding a ten minute stranglehold by Youghal and Finn levelled with a great score from play. Then Kinsale's second half substitute Donal Murphy put one over from the left to give Kinsale the lead again, which was followed up by a Finn point off the right boot. Kinsale led by a goal with just two minutes remaining when Coughlan pointed, but Youghal did get one score back through Conor Spillane from play late on.To be honest Kinsale deserved the win on overall play, but Youghal may have lost it a small bit on the tactical side of the game as Kinsale were also reduced to 14 men, with ten minutes still left on the clock.

Youghal 0-11 Kinsale 1-8 By Denis HurleyMonday, August 29, 2011 (Courtesy of Irish Examiner)

YOUGHAL and Kinsale must meet again for a place in the semi-finals of the Cork IFC after their stalemate at Páirc Uí Rinn last night.

Having looked liked victors for long periods after leading from the 22nd to the 58th minutes, Kinsale then appeared to be heading out as Youghal rediscovered their scoring touch with a blitz of four points in five minutes, having gone 19 minutes without a score.

Derry O’Callaghan’s monstrous – and disputed – point levelled it at 1-7 to 0-10 in the 60th minute for Kinsale, but despite lots of pressure they could not get the winner in injury time. While James O’Mahony then scored to put Youghal back in the lead in the 64th minute, there were still three more minutes of added time, with Barry Gray pointing at the death to secure a replay for the south-east side.

In the first-half, Youghal were unable to convert their early dominance into scores, Paul Moylan’s sharpshooting notwithstanding, and then when Kinsale got on top they failed to take their chances.

They had kicked eight wides by half-time having played with the wind, though it must be said that, once Derry O’Callaghan’s 13th-minute goal drew them level at 0-3 to 1-0, they were playing the more fluid football.

Their half-forward line of Barry Gray, Brian Coughlan and Niall Stanley were linking very well while Gearóid Finn also weighed in as Youghal’s early fluency began to desert them.

Moylan, who scored the game’s first three points, was their most dangerous attacker, but O’Mahony’s point to draw them level at 1-2 to 0-5 in the 20th minute was their last one of the half.

Finn and Coughlan, with the last score of the half, pointed to give Kinsale a slight cushion, but turning with the wind Youghal would still have been fancied. While Brendan Ring did score the first point of the half, Finn responded immediately, and despite having more territory, Youghal wasted three goal chances, Paul Kelly, Nigel Roche and Moylan all guilty.

Barry Ring was very good at centre-back for the Imokilly club, though, and Kinsale were denied chances until Finn pushed them three clear in the 54th minute.

Subs Jonathan Ormond and Conor Spillane pointed for Youghal before two by Brendan Ring, though, putting them back in front before the frantic closing stages.

Scorers for Youghal: P Moylan (0-2f), B Ring (0-1f), 0-3 each, J O’Mahony 0-2, J Ormonde, N Roche, C Spillane 0-1 each.

Scorers for Kinsale: G Finn 0-4 (0-1f), D O’Callaghan 1-1, B Gray, B Coughlan, N Stanley 0-1 each.

YOUGHAL: S O’Sullivan; B O’Sullivan, P O’Driscoll, A Fox; M Cronin, Barry Ring, B Coleman; K Dempsey, D Ring; J O’Mahony, Brendan Ring, P Kelly; N Roche, D O’Mahony, P Moylan.

Subs: B Cooper for D Ring (half-time), C Spillane for D O’Mahony (37), J Ormonde for Moylan (53).

KINSALE: C Hackett; N McCarthy, M O’Sullivan, C McCarthy; J Gould, J Keohane, R O’Sullivan; D O’Callaghan, D Coughlan; B Coughlan, A Gould, N Stanley; B Gray, C O’Sullivan, G Finn.

Youghal 0-19 Valley Rovers 3-6 A MAGNIFICENT four-point win for Youghal in the Cork Premier IHC quarter-final at Páirc Uí Rinn last evening.

After a solid opening half, played with plenty of heart, they went on to bag some magnificent scores over the 60 minutes.

A quick glance at the scoresheet tells the story — Valley Rovers were heavily dependent on superb full-forward Eamonn Collins, while Youghal had a far greater contribution, Leigh Desmond and Bill Cooper the outstanding players up front.

In reality, the outcome was seldom in doubt, with the seasiders hitting the ground running.

They were without John Grace and Brendan Coleman and whether this acted as incentive or not, they played like a team inspired. Their point-scoring was of top quality and, after a smart start to the game, raced 0-5 to 0-1 ahead inside the first 10 minutes.

As well as Desmond, Brendan Ring, James O’Mahony, Andrew Curtin and Damian Ring hit points. Richie Butler scored a pair for the Rovers but with Cooper coming into his own, Youghal stretched the lead with some outstanding points from Desmond and Cooper.

The east Cork team moved six points clear but up stepped Collins to capitalise on a mix up in the Youghal defence — he finished the easiest of tap-ins after a lengthy delivery from sub Ronan Lehane.

Eoin Manning added another point but Youghal went to the dressing-room with a 0-11 to 1-4 advantage.

A Brendan Ring free ensured a positive start for Youghal but they were reeled in when Collins hit the net six minutes in.

All of a sudden, it was a two-point game and the Innishannon side were hurling with far more intent.

However, Youghal were unrelenting.

Half-backs Conor Spillane and Damian Ring were tremendous and a trio of unanswered points were signed for up front.

They were looking good for a semi-final spot at 0-17 to 2-5 with 10 minutes remaining. There was one more twist though as Collins struck again. After winning clean possession he was fouled and then blasted the resultant penalty high to the net. It was back to a three-point match.

This was when Youghal dug deepest. Brett Moloney and Nigel Roche worked hard and when Brendan Ring knocked over a free, they could breathe a sigh of relief.

Ray O’Donovan hit back for the Rovers but when Andrew Curtin’s clearance found Desmond there was only going to be one result as he notched his fifth point from play to secure Youghal’s victory.

Scorers for Youghal: Brendan Ring 0-7 (5f), L Desmond 0-5, B Cooper 0-3, J O’Mahony, A Curtin, C O’Mahony and D Ring 0-1 each.

Youghal Comfortably through to the Semi Finals with a four point victory at Pairc Ui Rinn

By Derek Kiely At Pairc Ui Rinn

Youghal have made it through to the semi final of the 2011 Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship with a win over Valley Rovers on Sunday night and after a week of distractions off the field, the smiles were broad and wide on the turf at Pairc Ui Rinn at the final whistle of what was another important victory for the Youghal men.Youghal under Peter Queally were here last year and know only too well the heartbreak of coming so close, but yet so far, but this year nothing has been taken for granted, no stone has been left unturned and the spirit within the group is fantastic.Valley drew first blood with a fine score off Richard Butler, but then Youghal started the ball rolling in their direction with 5 unanswered points four points from play and a monster strike.Youghal leveled through Lee Desmond on the third minute, then led through Brendan Ring two minutes later.Youghal then added three further points in a five minute spell. James O'Mahony, Andrew Curtin and huge free from miles out off Damien Ring all pointing and on the 11 minute mark the Youghal Gaels led by four points.Ray O'Donovan and Eamonn Collins pointed for Valley Rovers, but Youghal's powerhouse duo, Brendan Ring and Lee Desmond added a further two points each to extend Youghal's lead to six points after 25 minutes of play. Then a mini disaster for Youghal who conceded a soft goal on the 26th minute when a defensive mix up left in Collins who swept the ball into the net.Youghal responded with a score from Brendan Ring, Valley scored another point before Lee Desmond wrapped up the first half with a score from play to leave Youghal leading by four points at the short whistle.Youghal started the second half brightly with a score from a Brendan Ring free, but then out of the blue Collins struck another goal for Valley Rovers. No panic from Youghal who then hit back three pointed scores without reply to redress the balance and the five point advantage, with points from Ciaran O'Mahony and two from Brendan Ring.

Rovers scored a '65' on the 46th minute to reduce Youghal's lead to four points, but again Youghal responded well with two scores, one from Bill Cooper and the other from play off Brendan Ring. Then with nine minutes to go Valley Rovers were awarded a very controversial penealty and Collins made no mistake converting the chance, but as was the way all night, Youghal responded with pure hurling.Brendan Ring pointed a free one minute later and then Lee Desmond was on target 3 minutes from time, to give Youghal the five point cushion. Valley did add a further point, but in the end the four point victory was the very least the Youghal side desreved. There were standout performances for Youghal all over the field and the spirit of the side is stronger than ever.

Scorers for Youghal: Brendan Ring 0-7, Lee Desmond 0-5, Bill Cooper 0-3, Andrew Curtin, Ciaran O'Mahony, Damien Ring and James O'Mahony 0-1 each.

Before the game they had bad news with their starting corner back Ann O'Connell having to pull out of the game due to injury. From the throw in Youghal were on top of their game. looking to get revenge after giving away so many frees the week before against Ballincollig the girls knew exactly what they had to do. Their disipline was fantastic throughout the game. The game got off to a great start for the youghal team with Siobhán Downing scoring a super goal, it was her against 3 defenders and the goal keeper, but the full forward kept her composer and volleyed a perfect goal to the back of the net. Captain Siobhan Downing had been out of the game due to injury for the last number of months and she proved her worth with this perfect display. Youghal continued to dominate the game scoring another 3 points 2 of which were scored by Shona Cunningham and another from Leah Broderick. Young Leah who has returned to the club with a Munster medal U16 with Cork showed exactly why she is a starting forward on the team.Amy Motherway was also on hand to score a great goal from play, she looked unstoppable throughout the game, making it very dificult for the back to mark her. Shona Cunningham was on top form for the Youghal side scoring another 2 points before Siobhán Downing struck again scoring another goal. Siobhán Downing and Shona Cunningham were to score another 4 points between them before the half-time whistle blew leaving the half-time score at 4-11 to no score. The second half started off with a bang with Katie Sloane making a great run up the field resulting in a cracking goal from the mid-fielder. Shona Cunningham and Shannen Bulman Joyce who both sent the ball soaring over the bar leaving the final score at a whopping 5-14 to no score leaving the Youghal side victorious. This was a great victory for the girls as the week before the Glen were only beaten in extra time to Castlemagner.

The girls now face Castlemagner in the next round of the Championship and they know exactly what they are up against with Castlemagner beating them margenly in the league. The Glen Rovers game is now behind them and the girls are hard at training this week to prove their worth in the next round.

02/08/2011 - Rovers too good for Youghal in Under 21 ‘B’ Contest in Killeaghposted 3 Aug 2011, 01:49 by Unknown user

East Cork Under 21 ‘B’ Hurling ChampionshipRussell Rovers 4-11Youghal 1-14By Derek KielyIn KilleaghRUSSELL ROVERS made sure of their place in the next round of the East Cork Under 21 ‘B’ Hurling Championship, with a resounding win over Youghal in Killeagh last Tuesday night and even though they trailed by two points at the short whistle, they looked to have plenty in the locker going into the second period.Youghal started impressively with an opening score from Keith McCarthy from play on the 2nd minute and Youghal added a further two early points without reply off the sticks of James O’Mahony and Leo Lyons-Troy respectively. It took Rovers 5 minutes to register a score when the very impressive Daniel Moynihan struck over from play on the right wing 35 meters out.Youghal replied brilliantly with a Alan Frahill-O’Connor ‘65’ on the 7th minute and a James O’Mahony free on the 9th minute.Rovers looking rather shaky at this point began to re-group and up popped Shane Fleming with a super score from play on the 11th minute to start the Russell Rovers revival.O’Mahony slotted a free for Youghal on the 21st minute to restore the 4 point lead, but back came Rovers through Daniel Moynihan and Fleming raising white flags.Youghal through long range expert Andrew Curtin were three ahead after 21 minutes when he slotted over a monster strike, but Rovers were now awake and two scores from play off Moynihan within a minute put just one point between the sides with 7 minutes of the first half remaining. To their credit Youghal rallied again with David O’Mahony scoring from play and Curtin sending over another long range effort to re-establish a three point advantage, but two late first half pointed free’s from Moynihan left just one point between them again, before James O’Mahony pointed for Youghal on the 34th minute of the first half. The second half got off to a flier for Rovers when just two minutes in Rovers wing forward Kevin O’Brien, playing in the corner finished off a great move with the matches opening goal.Youghal responded with a free from Curtin to level matters, but Russell Rovers Kevin Tattan re-established the lead with a point from play.Curtin again showed tremendous accuracy on the 40th minute when he sent over a long range free to level the game again. Moynihan pointed from a placed ball for Rovers, only for O’Mahony to respond with a pointed free of his own seconds later, making it a level game yet again. Then the game really swung the way of the men from Shanagarry with a goal on the 41st minute from Shane Fleming and even though Youghal did respond with a score from Leo Lyons-Troy two minutes later it wasn’t enough to stop Rovers who dominated the rest of proceedings with a scoring spree of two goals, one from James Moynihan and the other from Kevin Ivors, plus a point on the 62nd minute from play off Eoin McGrath.

Youghal 3-8 Glanmire 0-8By Brendan Larkin (Courtesy of Irish Examiner

PAUL MOYLAN provided the inspiration as Youghal saw off the challenge of fellow east Cork side Glanmire in a disappointing county IFC fourth round tie at Rostellan on Saturday night.

Operating at left-corner forward, Moylan bagged 2-3 to put his side into the last eight, where they await the winners of the Killavullen, Cill na Martra and Kinsale triangle.

The Seasiders could not have asked for a better start. Playing with the wind, they won a penalty 20 seconds in which Moylan coolly converted, sending the Glanmire keeper the wrong way.

Big Ken Dempsey tacked on a point a minute later and it looked as if the Riverstown side were in for a drubbing. However, they weathered the early Youghal storm well and stayed in touch with their opponents throughout the opening half, thanks to the accuracy of full-forward James Murphy who scored all four Glanmire points.

In contrast, three of the six Youghal forwards got on the scoresheet but they had to defend stoutly coming up to half time as Glanmire sought an equalising goal, and their half-time lead of 1-4 to 0-4 didn’t look to be sufficient given the strength of the wind.

However, Glanmire needed early second-half scores if they were to get back into the game but a resolute Youghal defence proved impregnable, with Brendan O’Sullivan, Paul O’Driscoll and John Grace outstanding.

With Paul Kelly and Nigel Roche giving their opponents’ defence a torrid time, Youghal added 1-4 without reply to effectively kill the game as a contest.

Paul Moylan began the scoring burst with a point and only great defending by the Glanmire backs denied David O’Mahony a second Youghal goal.

The pressure on the Glanmire defence was incessant and it paid off with a second goal by Moylan, who ran on to a perfect through pass from Paul Kelly to score with ease.

Such was the dominance of Youghal, it took Glanmire 26 minutes to add to their first-half tally with a Daniel Molden point in the 48th minute and, when Michael Cussen added another a minute later, there was still plenty of time to threaten a revival.

However, this slick-moving Youghal side nipped any hint of a Glanmire recovery in the bud in the 53rd minute with their third goal, when Paul Moylan’s 20-metre free come back off the Glanmire upright to

Roche, who coolly slotted home.

It was plain sailing from there to the finish with James Murphy adding two late points to put some respectability on the final scoreline for a hugely disappointing Glanmire side.

Evening Echo Intermediate Football ChampionshipBy Derek KielyIn RostellanYOUGHAL progressed in some style last Saturday in the Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship with a dominating second half performance in a much deserved victory over Glanmire in Rostellan.Youghal got the dream start to this match, when Dave O’Mahony who was raining in on the Glanmire goal was tripped in the square by the Glanmire corner back Anthony Garvey in the third minute and referee James Dorgan signalled a penealty.Paul Moylan stepped up to take the penealty for Youghal, sending Brendan O’Connell the wrong way in the Glanmire goal giving Youghal the early goal advantage.Youghal playing with the elements in the opening half, struck again on the fifth minute when Ken Dempsey sent over a point from play from 50 meters out. Then Glanmire got into their stride with three unanswered points in a five minute period all off the boot of James Murphy, one from play and two from placed balls, then Nigel Roche of Youghal had a score from the right wing on the 13th minute to give Youghal the two point advantage.Glanmire’s Michael Cussen dominated a lot of ball in the opening quarter and was setting up some good attacks, but Glanmire were failing in the shooting department and Youghal who were slightly starved of possession took advantage of a break out of defence on the 17th minute when John Grace scored a beautiful point from play and Youghal had the goal lead again.Murphy pointed from a free on the 23rd minute for Glanmire, but the last score of the first half came off the boot of Paul Moylan on the 30th minute to send Youghal into the half time break with a three point advantage. The first half may have been a tight enough affair, but the second half was completely dominated by Youghal.Moylan pointed from a placed ball on the 34th minute and when the very impressive Nigel

Roche pointed from play seconds later Youghal had a five point advantage.Glanmire simply couldn’t get the ball in the opening quarter of the second half and when Roche picked up the ball 30 meters out on the 37th minute he carved through the Glanmire defence and buried the ball into the top right hand corner of the Glanmire net and as a contest this championship game was over.Moylan and Roche added further points to give Youghal a ten point advantage with just fifteen minutes remaining. It took Glanmire 18 minutes to register a score in the second half when Daniel Molden pointed from play. With a significant breeze at their backs in the second half Glanmire failed to take advantage of the elements and the Youghal full back line of Brendan O’Sullivan, Paul O’Driscoll and Alan Fox were impassable and Glanmire were restricted to long range efforts, with Michael Cussen sending one over on the 50th minute from 50 meters out.Youghal’s response was impressive as they moved the ball back up the field eventually drawing a foul 13 meters out.Paul Moylan’s free hit the post and rebounded into his hands, the second time he took the option of shooting for goal and finished in style to give Youghal and eleven point lead on the 55th minute.Glanmire did get two late consolation points, one from James Murphy and the other from second half substitute Jonathan O’Callaghan, but it was a very impressive display by the Youghal side who coped with everything that Glanmire threw at them and looked controlled throughout the entire 60 minutes.Scorers for Youghal: P Moylan 2-3, N Roche 1-2, D O’Mahony, K Dempsey and J Grace 0-1 each.Glanmire: J Murphy 0-5, M Cussen, J O’Callaghan and D Molden 0-1 each.YOUGHAL: P Mackey; B O’Sullivan, P O’Driscoll, A Fox; Barry Ring (Cpt) J Grace, B Coleman; K Dempsey, D Ring; P Kelly, J O’Mahony, Brendan Ring; N Roche, D O’Mahony, P Moylan.Subs: J Ormonde for P Moylan (55) S Twomey for B Coleman (56) C Spillane for B O’Sullivan (57)GLANMIRE: B O’Connell; D O’Regan, K Sheehan, A Garvey; M Connolly, B Murphy, K Mulvihill; T Leahy, M Hopkins; B O’Sullivan, B O’Callaghan, J Murphy; K Kenneally, M Cussen, D Molden.Subs: J O’Callaghan for M Hopkins (46) D O’Brien for B O’Callaghan (55)Referee: James Dorgan (Nemo Rangers)posted 24 Jul 2011, 13:01 by Unknown user [ updated 26 Jul 2011, 02:10 ]

Evening Echo Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship

Youghal 2-12 Watergrasshill 2-09

By Derek Kiely In Ballynoe

YOUGHAL showed that when it comes to seeing out victories in this years championship, they could have been forgiven for thinking that their first round defeat was a little unfair, but Peter Queallys men made no such mistake last Thursday evening at St. Catherine’s, when they deservedly held on for victory, but an Eight point lead at the short whistle should have been a bigger cushion in the second half.Youghal played a brilliant first half of hurling, where Bill Cooper, Stephen Twomey and Brendan Ring

were outstanding.Youghal strolled into a four point lead with scores from play from Ring, Cooper, Leigh Desmond and Brett Moloney. It took the hill 11 minutes to register a score, eventually it came from a free from midfielder Paddy O’Regan.Brendan Ring responded with a free of his own a minute later, but a ‘65’ from O’Regan on the 15th minute made it a four point game once more.Youghal then got their first goal of the match, when Richard Cunningham played the perfect pass to Desmond who rounded the Watrergrasshill keeper Aidan Foley and carefully slotted the ball home.Seconds later Ring was on target again from play and a rather shocked looking Watergrasshill side, significantly playing into the breeze trailed by seven.Eoin Barry pointed for the Hill on the 21st minute, but it did nothing to suppress the Youghal pressure.Relentless in attack Youghal again found a big gap in the Watergrasshill defence, when Cooper fielded a magnificent ball on the right he found Desmond who fooled the former Tipperary Inter-County hurler Eddie Enright with ease and found Richard Cunningham who drilled the ball into the Watergrasshill net for Youghal’s second goal of the evening. The Hill had the last say of the first half with a Jason Foley pointed free, but at the break confidence was booming out of the many Youghal supporters who had made the journey to Ballynoe./The second half performance from the Hill dented that confidence significantly with an early goal from John Halbert and a couple of early points drew the Hill eventually to within a goal, but Youghal had something extra about them and kept chipping away at the score board. With just 7 minutes remaining Watergrasshill scored their second goal, this time from Jason Foley and just two points separated the sides, but cometh the hour cometh the men as both Cooper and Ring slotted over the winning scores, add to that a couple of significant saves by the Youghal captain and keeper Eoin Coleman and you can round off a very good team performance from the Youghal Gaels

Friday, July 01, 2011

YOUGHAL survived a tremendous Watergrasshill second-half rally before securing a place in the next round of the Cork Premier IHC at Ballynoe last night.

The Seasiders looked to be cruising after leading by nine points at the break but the Hill refused to roll over and it took a brilliant save by ‘keeper Eoin Coleman from a Sean O’Callaghan effort a minute from time to deny them extra-time.

And the outcome could have been a lot different had Watergrasshill not been so wasteful. Over the hour they hit 12 wides and must now beat Valley Rovers to avoid the relegation play-off.

Wind assisted Youghal had two points on the board inside the opening three minutes, but the Hill enjoyed more of the play which wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard.

With limited possession, the Seasiders added two further points, the second a beauty from out on the touchline by county senior player Bill Cooper, who was hugely influential.

The Hill continued to enjoy the majority of possession but could only add to their wides tally and they

hit seven by the end of the opening quarter. In contrast Youghal made use of possession they won with a Leigh Desmond goal, set up by Richard Cunningham, which had them 1-6 to 0-2 in front after 20 minutes, the two Hill points coming from placed balls by Paddy O’Regan.

Youghal’s hurling was crisp and it showed with a superb second goal, created by centre-back Conor Spillane and carried on by Bill Cooper and Leigh Desmond and finished in style by Richard Cunningham. Coming up to half-time the Hill applied a lot of pressure on the Youghal defence as they looked for a goal, but keeper Eoin Coleman denied John Halbert to leave Youghal in front at the break, 2-6 to 0-4.

Youghal continued to hold sway on the changeover with John Grace and Conor Spillane rock solid in defence where they held the Hill forwards in a vice like grip. But the game was thrown wide open in the 40th minute when Halbert placed Jason Foley for a goal. It was just the spark this dull affair needed and with Halbert now at centre forward, he (Halbert) rocked Youghal with his side’s second goal.

Bill Cooper eased the pressure on the Youghal defence with a splendid point and another by Brendan Ring gave them a four point cushion coming up to full time. The Hill continued to press forward and after Paddy O’Regan pointed a long range free, they were denied an equalising goal by that brilliant Coleman save.

Scorers for Youghal: Brendan Ring 0-6 (0-4 frees), L Desmond 1-1, R Cunningham 1-0, B Cooper 0-3, B Moloney, A Curtin 0-1 each.

After eighty minutes of non stop hurling it was Ballincollig who emerged victorious at Riverstown on last Saturday evening in the first round of the Evening Echo premier intermediate hurling championship. Referee Michael O’Mahony could well have blown up after Bill Cooper’s tremendous equalising point for Youghal in the final minute of extra time but in time added on in extra time, corner back Liam Jennings became the hero for Ballincollig as he landed the winning point to break the hearts of the Youghal boys who had fought tooth and nail throughout a great contest. Both of these sides are expected to figure in the closing stages of this championship and while Youghal will now have to go the long way round, I expect them to recover from this defeat and feature again later on. There were some tremendous displays on both sides with Brendan Ring, unerring all night, Brett Moloney 0-5 from play, Nigel Roche, Bill Cooper, Conor Spillane and Brendan O’Sullivan all catching the eye for Youghal, while Rory Doherty, Conor Sexton, Ciáran O’Sullivan, Colin Harris, Stephen O’Donoghue and Liam Jennings were all top class for the winners. There was little to choose between the sides throughout with the wind favouring Youghal in the first half and they used it to good effect with Brendan Ring from free’s and Brett Moloney showing to good effect. Bill Cooper too came up with a smashing goal on eight minutes and followed it up with a point to help Youghal to a 1-7 to 0-2 lead after a good first quarter. By half time the Youghal advantage was still seven points as Ballincollig had a good second quarter matching Youghal score for score with Conor Sexton, Niall Allen and Rory Doherty on target as Youghal led by 1-10 to 0-6 at the interval. It took a great save from Eoin Coleman to deny David Bowen a goal, but with the strength of the breeze the half time Youghal lead was far from secure. On the resumption Ballincollig with two subs on began to make inroads into the Youghal lead as Rory Doherty and Conor Sexton shot four points between them while Emmett Ryle lost a good chance of a goal as Ballincollig were right back in the contest. The lead was back to a point at the three quarter stage as Rory Doherty edged Ballincollig closer with Brett Moloney eventually getting Youghal off the mark in the 47th minute with his 4th point from play. With ten minutes remaining the sides were level at 1-12 each after Ronan O’Driscoll shot to the net as the Youghal defence were under pressure, with goalkeeper Eoin Coleman having to hurry a clearance which went to O’Driscoll, who shot to the net for Ballincollig who then hit the front for the second time in the contest with Conor Sexton putting them ahead with a point from play.

Youghal had to dig deep with Brett Moloney coming up trumps again before Colin Harris looked to have won it for Ballincollig in normal time. Nigel Roche won a free for Youghal and the unerring Brendan Ring slotted over to send the game into extra time.Youghal were now wind assisted again in the opening period and four Ring points added to another from Bill Cooper to just two from David Bowen and Doherty, left Youghal ahead by 1-20 to 1-17 after the first ten minutes of extra time.On the turnover Brendan Ring put Youghal four to the good with a great point from play but back came Ballincollig with Rory Doherty breaking through to score a second goal for the Muskerry outfit. Emmett Ryle brought the sides level again before Rory Doherty converted from a 65 conceded under pressure by Coleman. Time was now almost up as Youghal chased an equaliser with Bill Cooper striking over from an acute angle to tie the scores once more. Extra time was up but referee Michael O’Mahony allowed play to continue with Youghal holding out until a clearance fell around midfield was picked up by Liam Jennings who slotted over the winning point for Ballincollig, much to the delight of their fans. It was heartbreak for Youghal as the final whistle sounded on the puck out to bring this tremendous contest to a finish.Youghal will now await the loser from the Watergrasshill / Tracton contest in the second round in a few weeks time.Youghal: B Ring 0-11, B Moloney 0-5, B Cooper 1-3, A Curtin 0-2 and Barry Ring 0-1.Ballincollig: R Doherty 1-10, R O’Driscoll 1-0, C Sexton 0-4, C O’Sullivan, D Bowen, C Harris, N Allen, E Ryle and L Jennings 0-1 each.Youghal: E Coleman, M Cronin, J Grace, B O’Sullivan, K Walsh, C Spillane, B Coleman, N Roche, B Ring, B Moloney, B Cooper, J Ormonde, A Curtin, B Ring and L Desmond. The Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship 1st RoundYoughal 1-11Glanworth 1-10

By Derek KielyIn CastlelyonsYoughal deservedly progressed through to the next round of the Evening Echo Intermediate Football Championship by the narrowest of margins on Saturday night with a one point victory over Glanworth in a game with a touch of controversy late on.There is no doubt, but Youghal deserved to win this one and got off to a tremendous start with three points scored after only two minutes of play and could have had a goal as well only for a top drawer save by the Glanworth keeper Thomas Fitzgibbon. The first white flag was raised after just 41 seconds when Youghal wing forward Nigel Roche sent the ball over from a tight angle.Immediately Youghal who were playing into the stiff breeze in the first half scored again straight from the kick out, this time the very impressive Conor O’Sullivan pointed to double the margin.Again Youghal swarmed the Glanworth kick out and a ball to the left corner was met by Paul Moylan who slotted over the ball and Youghal couldn’t have asked for a better start.

Page 24: youghal.cork.gaa.ieyoughal.cork.gaa.ie/Shared Documents/Archive Match...  · Web viewWe travelled to Killeagh on Wednesday 23rd November to play Castlelyons in the final of the Under

Glanworth then had two scores from play from Michael Pierce, but back came Youghal again and Conor O’Sullivan was yet again on target with a superb point from play to re-establish the two point lead.Glanworth’s best player by a mile, full forward Pierre O’Driscoll scored from a free, but in reply Paul Moylan sent a point over with a free after ten minutes of play.O’Driscoll was on target again seconds later for Glanworth, but the excellent Ken Dempsey was on target himself minutes later for Youghal who were managing at this stage to keep the two point lead intact. The next four minutes saw Glanworth score three unanswered points, a free and a point from O’Driscoll and on the 21st minute Michael Sheehan gave Glanworth the lead for the one and only time.Youghal responded well and the defence was superb, dispelling wave after wave of attacks, forcing six wides out of the Glanworth forwards and when Youghal were awarded a free on the Glanworth ‘45’ few would have given Conor O’Sullivan a chance of getting the ball over, but a super strike saw the ball fly over and a white flag raised as the game was level and remained that way at the short whistle.Youghal came out fired up and within seconds Paul Moylan had Youghal back in front with a well taken free.O’Driscoll levelled with a pointed free of his own some ten minutes later as neither side could capitalise on some scoreable chances.Conor O’Sullivan slotted two free’s for Youghal on the 45th and 47th minutes respectively and it took another O’Driscoll free to narrow the margin to one point with nine minutes remaining.Youghal got a free on the Glanworth ‘21’ seconds later for an off the ball incident, spotted by the Banteer referee Conor Lane and rather than just settle for the point, Youghal took a quick free into full forward David O’Mahony.O’Mahony turned brilliantly and drilled the ball into the goal to the delight of the large travelling support from Youghal, but it wasn’t quite over yet.Paul Moylan then pointed a beautiful and crucial score for Youghal with seven minutes remaining, but then two moments of extremely poor refereeing, which could have had spelled disaster for Youghal.Incident one concerned David Pyne of Glanworth falling untouched to the ground and a free was awarded and was duly slotted over by O’Driscoll. Then a goal was awarded for Glanworth when it was clear to everyone in Castlelyons that the player who in the square scooped the ball off the ground into the net.The referee consulted with his umpires for a minute, but despite the appeals of the Youghal players the green flag was waved and the goal stood. With two minutes to go O’Driscoll made it a one point game with a pointed free, but despite late pressure Youghal held out for the win and Peter Queally’s men go marching into the next round.Youghal’s Premier Intermediate Hurlers are in action in two weeks time ar Riverstown the home of Sarsfields where they take on Ballincollig, where Peter Queally is again the man in charge and this win in the Intermediate Football Championship will give the Youghal lads a much needed break from football and time to concentrate on Hurling.Scorers for Youghal: Conor O’Sullivan 0-5 (3f) Paul Moylan 0-4 (3f) David O’Mahony 1-0, Ken Dempsey and Nigel Roche 0-2 each.EOCHAILL: Pat Mackey; Brendan O’Sullivan, Paul O’Driscoll, Stephen Twomey; Michael Cronin, John Grace, Barry Ring (Cpt); Conor O’Sullivan, Damien Ring; James O’Mahony, Ken Dempsey, Paul Kelly; Nigel Roche, Paul Moylan, David O'Mahony.GLANWORTH: Thomas Fitzgibbon; William Blackburn, Denis Gallagher (Cpt) Shane

ERIN’S OWN will progress into this year’s East Cork under 21A football final after a hard earned win over Youghal in Carrigtwohill last Saturday afternoon, where only the width of the crossbar separated the sides at the final whistle.Erin’s Own started brightly with four unanswered scores, with Diarmuid Ryan, Mark Collins, Calvin O’Callaghan and Andrew Power all raising white flags.Youghal’s first score came on the 19th minute when Edmund Flavin pointed from play. This score followed a great spell of Youghal pressure which included a fantastic save from the Erin’s Own goalkeeper Ryan O’Neill.Youghal hit a couple of wides and rattled the Erin’s Own crossbar and when Ryan sent a free over seconds later for Erin’s Own, he re-established the four point lead.Erin’s Own were awarded a penealty on the 24th minute and Diarmuid Ryan gave his side a strong seven point advantage.Youghal rallied with two late first half points from Adrian Curtin to leave five between the sides at the short whistle. The second half was a very competitive 30 minutes, where after an exchange of three points each, Youghal started to get right back into this match. James O’Mahony kicked over a point from play and a free on the 45th and the 48th minutes, plus a point from Keith McCarthy in between made this a one score game with twelve minutes to play, but neither side could add to their tally and with Erin’s Own squandering some late chances to put this game to bed everyone’s interest lasted right through to the end.Youghal had some very late half chances to earn extra time, but going for goals restricted their chances with a tight Erin’s Own defence.Erin’s Own will now meet either Aghada or Midleton who play next week.Scorers for Erin’s Own: D RYAN 1-3, C Alvin O’Callaghan 0-2, A Power, M Collins and I Mylod 0-1 each.Youghal: J O’Mahony and A Curtin 0-2 each, C O’Sullivan, E Flavin, K McCarthy and D O’Mahony 0-1 each.ERIN’S OWN: R O’Neil; N Fouhy, C Dooley, S Crowley; C Cronin, J Sheehan, N Scanlon; C O’Mahony, M Carroll(Cpt); Calvin O’Callaghan, A Power, D Smiddy; M Collins, D Ryan, Cian O’Callaghan.Subs: I Mylod for M Collins (31) K Moynihan for C O’Mahony (52)YOUGHAL: S O’Sullivan; K Daly, A Kenny, M Cronin; A Curtin, C O’Mahony (Cpt) P O’Sullivan; D Mulcahy, C O’Sullivan; O Murphy, S Spillane, E Flavin; K McCarthy, J O’Mahony, D O’Mahony.Subs: D Scanlon for K Daly (29), D Power for S Spillane (41) A O’Connor for K Scanlon (52)Referee: Brian Murphy (Carrigtwohill)

Youghal under 21 footballers played Kinsale Monday night 21 March in the Glenville tournament. We went into this game missing a few players due to illness and injury. But this allowed the players on the fringes to make their clam for a position on the team. James O'Mahony was the first score followed by a point by Keith Mc Carthy, this score was definitely the score of the match. Keith managed to solo down the left wing than cut in and kick a brilliant score off the outside of his left foot. James managed another two points before half time along with a penalty scored by Keith. Half time score Eochaill 1/4 Kinsale 1/2.Second half saw Kinsale really come into the game,we were in trouble in a umber of positions but in fairness to everyone they rallied and got back into the game. Conor O Sullivan fielded a great kick out and soled through to get his own score, this was followed by a point by Keith Mc Carthy. Then up came Adrian Curtin from wing back and but a point over, Conor once again broke through for another score. Adrian managed another score, but along came the score of the tournament! High ball came into the full forward line Simon Herlihy broke the ball down and Victor Cahill stuck into the back of the net!So 16 teams down to 2 and we managed to take the trophy home, we have had a great build up to our championship V Erin Own so hopefully we can beat Erins Own on Saturday.

Youghal played Donoughmore Monday 28th Feb in Youghal, this was the semi final of the Glenville under 21 football tournament. We started very nervous giving away some very stupid frees but we got our act together just after a wonderful score from Michael Cronin. He interlinked with everyone up the field and managed a fantastic score at the other end.Score at half time was Youghal 1/4 Donoughmore 0/6.Second half really showed Youghal dictating the game,we controlled most areas of the pitch especially in front of goal.We managed to score 3/4 in the second half with Donoughmore scoring only 2 points.

19/02/2011 U21F Tournament Eochaill 5-6 Clyda Rovers 2-9posted 20 Feb 2011, 13:23 by Unknown user

We traveled to Mourneabbey to play a senior football club,Clyda Rovers. This particular under 21 team had won their divisional championship last year and had also beaten Kanturk in the previous round(Aidan Walsh the cork senior footballer would be on the Kanturk team). So this was going to be a real team for our up and coming team.We started very bad,to be honest you couldn't start any worst,we were 2/1 down after 5 minutes. But in fairness to the whole panel they are willing to listen and improve in every game.Organization was the key factor once that was in place we slowly got back into the game.At half time we were two point up after being seven points down.Second half say Youghal play with the win and gain a bit of momentum,we were slowly showing signs of a team who and deal with pressure .Clyda midfield and forward line weren't given any room and found it very hard to score. But the Youghal midfielders and forward line were getting on the sore board. It is always good sign of a hard working team when your two midfielders score 2/1 between them.So over all a very encouraging performance but everything is about championship on the 26th March .

Final score Eochaill 5/6 Clyda 2/9Team: 1 Scott Sullivan,2 Killian Daly,3 Aaron Kenny,4 Michael Cronin,5 Adrian Curtin,6 Ciaran O Mahony,7 Paul O Sullivan,8 Daniel Mulcahy,9 Conor O Sullivan,10 Keith Mc Carthy,11 Shane Spillane,12 Aaron O Connor,13 Oisin Murphy,14 James O Mahony,15 David O Mahony

11/02/2011 - Murray spearheads Youghal first league match victory.posted 13 Feb 2011, 04:37 by Unknown user

East Cork Division 2 Junior Football LeagueEochaill 3-06St Catherine’s 1-10IT WAS a pretty dismal night for football, last Friday night in Ballynoe, but that won’t bother Aidan Foley and his players as Youghal came away with the points after a two point margin win over St Catherine’s.It’s always great to get a win in your first game in the league and even though Youghal had a few scares in the second half overall they deserved the victory after a gutsy display by the young side.In tough wet conditions with a heavy pitch it took ten minutes for the opening score and it came off the boot of Adrian O’Connor to give Youghal the lead.

Page 28: youghal.cork.gaa.ieyoughal.cork.gaa.ie/Shared Documents/Archive Match...  · Web viewWe travelled to Killeagh on Wednesday 23rd November to play Castlelyons in the final of the Under

Two minutes later and St Catherines responded with a pointed free from by far and above their best player on the night Shane Fitzgerald and seconds later St Catherine’s had the lead for the only time in this game when Padraig O’Connor finished off a well worked move to put over the ball from play.On the sixteenth minute Youghal took control of the first half when a long ball in from Shane Spillane bounced invitingly for Vincent Murray to challenge the St Catherine’s goalkeeper Colm Molloy. Murray was quicker to the bounce of the ball and cleverly flicked the ball past Molloy for the games opening goal.Youghal’s players were inspired by the goal and then hit over two points on the 21st and 23rd minutes from David O’Mahony and Keith McCarthy respectively.St Catherine’s had the last score of the first half with a pointed free from Fitzgerald to leave a goal between the sides at half time.Youghal couldn’t have started the second half better with an instant point from Oisin Murphy, followed by a score seconds later from Keith McCarthy, then on the 34th minute a goal from Victor Cahill had St Catherine’s under all kinds of pressure, but St Catherine’s responded brilliantly. For the next 20 minutes St Catherines stopped Youghal from scoring and notched up seven points without reply.Scores came from Tim O’Connor, Paul Higgins and three brilliant points from play and a pointed free from Shane Fitzgerald made it a one point game with just six minutes to go.Just when it looked like St Catherine’s were going to run out winners in this one and inspired individual run by Youghal’s David O’Mahony finished off by a superb point on the 55th minute changed the complexion of the game yet again at a crucial time. With three minutes to go Youghal hit their third goal through Ordain Brennan who broke down the left wing and fired a ball in, that deceived the Catherine’s keeper and the ball nestled in the net.The final word went to St Catherine’s number nine Shane Fitzgerald who capped off a man of the match performance with a very late consolation goal for Catherine’s, but it was too late to effect the outcome, in what was a thoroughly entertaining game of football.Eochaill:Scott O’Sullivan; Andreas Curtin, Aaron Kenny, Killian Daly; Adrian Curtin, Padraig O’Mahony, Simon Herlihy; Oisin Murphy, Donal Mulcahy; Aaron O’Connor, Shane Spillane, Keith McCarthy; Victor Cahill, Vincent Murray (Cpt) David O’Mahony.Subs used: Ross Desmond for Victor Cahill, James O’Halloran for Simon Herlihy, Ordain Brennan for Shane Spillane.St Catherine’s:Colm Molloy: David O’Connor, John Casey, Dave Wallace; James Casey, Junior Sheehan, John Mulcahy; Alan Carr, Shane Fitzgerald; Padraig O’Connor, Pa Roche, Laurence O’Connor; James Caples, Tim O’Connor, Paul HigginsMatch Referee: Pa BeausangYoughal next match is away to Glenville this Friday coming the 18th of February with an8pm throw in.06/02/2011 Fé21F Challenge Eochaill 2-13 Fr. Last Wednesday night 2nd February we traveled to the sports ground of C.I.T to play the freshers 2nd team in the Glenville under 21 football tournament. On the night we were still short a few players because of exams, college or playing championship with there college, this again allow a few of the players on the fringe to get a chance to make this team.As the weeks go by its becoming more and more obvious that it will be very hard to pick the first 15 players on the 26th March.1st half saw Youghal get numerous chances but not take them, between given away possession, trying to get goals and hitting the goal post(Killian Daly would have scored 1/2 if he only stopped hitting the goal post!!!).James O Mahony as the fist to get on the score board,David wasn't going to leave his older brother get away with that so he got the next 3 points! This was followed by a great score from Ciran O Mahony from centre back(Yes all O Mahonys scoring in the first half!)Score at half time Eochaill 0/5 C.I.T 0/2 (both of these scores from frees)2nd half we started very bad allowing C.I.T back into the game, before we knew what was happening we were only 1 point up.Thankfully we are showing a bit of maturity and steadied the ship slowly coming back into the game.Adrian Curtin and Paul O Sullivan came up from the back line and got a point each,Shane Spillane and Oisin Murphy also followed with a point each. But the score that killed the game was a goal by James O Mahony.Good performance again by the whole panel but we cant afford to give away so much possession and allow the opposition back into the game.

Final score : Eocaill 1/9 - C.I.T 1/51 Scoot O Sullivan,2 Andrew Curtin,3 Aaron Kenny,4 Michael Cronin,5 Adrian Curtin,6 Ciaran O Mahony,7 Paul O Sullivan,8 Oisin Murphy,9 Daniel Mulcahy,10 Killian Daly,11 Shane Spillane,12 Edmund Flavin,13 David o Mahony,14 James O Mahony.15 Vitor Cahill.
