r

ALA accredited library schools in the Uhited States and Canada.. The main

purpose of the survey was to_collett comparative data about admir4strative

structure, collections, budgets and personnel within these libraries. The

survey_was d signed to show quantitative relationships among subject collections

within. the field of library science. In a 1964 issue of the JoA urnal of

Education for Librarianship, David Kaser Commented that library literature con

;tained little informatfln about libFary science libraries. Despite the passage

of ten years, the situation is much the same.

The quantitative data presented in this.report is not ject to generalized

, -,-.

comparisons or conclusions. Due to the limitatiofis and flaws in the question-/

naire design, incomplete or partial responses, lack of standardization in re-

porting figures and a limited sample size, no correlations or discernable

//patvIrns can be extracted from data. However, all of the data is presented

. -

showing relative rankings of Lddividual institutions. As such, it is a limited,

but useful, measure.

Of the 52 universitie contacted, replies were received from 30 universities,

or 57.6 %. Six rep es were not used because either separate figures for

libr ary science olleetioni were not available or figUres were given for small,

special collections' (i.e. reading rooms, resource centers) rather than the main

,

librarysci nce collection. The following repbrt is based on replies from

24 insti tions or 4`6.:17..

The- list of respondents is provided in Appendix 1. Each institution was

assigned a numeric code and it is this code rather than the institution's

B.. Administrative Structure

The first three questions were concerned with the administrative structure

and the physical placement of the collection. More often than not, the

responding librarians indicated that for administrative purposes, they report

to,a superior within the library system.fither than to the Dean of the Library

School.

Twenty-one respondents reported that the library school and the library science

library are housed in the same building. The majority are,in the main or

There is an apparent relationship between- the location of.the

library and the person to whom its library reports:

IIf the library science library is located in the main library, the librarian

almost always reports to. omeone within the library administration. However,

if the c4lection is housed outside the main library, the.librarian is more

i likely to report to the dean of the library school.

mPit was made to gather information over a three year period, VIA a glance

at allIes IV, V and VI will show that much partial r porting occurred and

that uniform information was not available. This fu they reduced the sample

Size., Table IV lists the responding universities by code number (seeNlIendix 1$

for code explanation) and compares th e_collection size of'the university

°library and its library science collection from 1968 through 1971. The

percentage shown represents the amount of library/Science material within

the total collection and reflecti the emphasis placed on library science within

then total university, program: Care should-be taken when using-this figure to-4

compare different types of institutions.

Table V ranks the collection size of university libraries as of 1968/69.- It

r

also lists the average number of volumes added.annually to the total institutional

collection. This, average was based on figures for three'reporting yearp: It

does not take into account withdrawals made by those libraries. For university

libraries.between 1,000,000 and 4,500;000.volumes, th'e median number of vqluies

added annually was 118,588 The median, figure for universities with collections

4

under'one million was 30,628 volumes.

The collection size and average number of volumes added annually for library

science libraries isrepresented in Table VI. Again, the collection size was

based on 1968/69 figures where possiblg. For libraryscienCe collections

between 10,000 and 40,000 volumes, the median number Wvolumes added annually was

1,430. No conclusions regarding grOw h patterns" or rates can'be made from

this information, but it is useful as a comparative measdie.

-

In 1968/69, the median figure for libr:ry science collection size was 25,074

volumes. This figure was increased to 25,755 volumes in 1969/70 and to. 1

28,499 in 1970/71. Additional figures regarding collection size are given

E. Enrollment, and Faculty

Enrollment figures (questions #11,12) were not'subject to much analysis due

to incomplete responses and great variety in repotting methods. In an,attempt

to maintain uniformity, these figures hive been converted to FTE figures.

Table X lists the 24-universities, the library school FTE enrAlment for each

of the three years and the library school faculty, both full-time and part-

time. FTE enrollment figures ranged from a.high of 429 to .a Ldw of'4 in

1970/71. The median FTE enrollment for 1968/69 was 169;°176 for 1969/701

152 for,1970/71. The median figure for total faculty(both full and part

time) was consistent at'19 to 20-for all three reporting years, Five

universities had larger part-time faculty members thanaeir-full-time

staffs, however, this was notthe norm: AdOitionar enrdllment figures areA

Staffing Patterns, Services and Salaries

. . ,

Questions # 14 and' #15 were concerned with staffing patterns and basic library,

Dinctions. Quite obviously, the level of staffing is influenced by the functi6ns0

performed by the library science library staff. It was possible to divide the

libraries into three distinct groups,, based on the number or,type of library

functions performed.

Group I: Libraries performing all operationor acquisitions and cataloging plus

one other function., These, libraries were generally more heavily staffed with

professionals than groups II and III. There was no apparent relationihip between

size of professional staff, collection size or FIE figures. Staffing appears

to be determined on the basis of fUnctigns performed.

In response to Qeestion #18, "Does any of your staff participate in teaching in:;

reported or a variety'of nebulous factors such is cataloging backlogs. The

..

number of library school'atudents and faculty,.ihe library science librariants

Period. Data on library staff was only collected for the year 1916771;:

While summakies are useftil for an cmerall view of the field, indiridfial

libraries who wish to evaluate themselves would do best to rank themielves

This type of survey is very useful to provide am overall ;view of the.field
